We have to check if we can reproduce that OOo tries to write the xlc files
though it is unnecessary. At least on Windows I couldn't reproduce it, we need
to test it on other platforms.

If OOo wrote the files only if it had a reason to do so the issue indeed would
be "invalid" as using OOo in user directories without write access is not a
supported feature.

On Linux it does happen.
As I wrote, what OOo does is to remove the '.xlc' files completely, and replace
them with new ones. To remove files, it doesn't require write permissions for
them, but write permisssion for their containing directory.
So, at least on Linux, the error occures because the user has no
write-permission for the containing directory ('basic').

As for your question, the user's OOo directory already contained those files.

A quick test on Windows showed that the error didn't appear when I made the xlc
files read only, started OOo, created a document, saved it and closed OOo: no
error message.

I assume that in your case either the xlc files didn't exist or something had
been changed to Basic and so usually should be saved.

Well, I think you have a point here.
Please let me check why OOo wants to write the file. In case nothing has changed
in the hierarchy of the basic libraries it is indeed a superfluous action and
perhaps can be avoided.

BTW: does your user directory already contain the xlc files? In case they aren't
there OOo will always try to create them and I'm afraid that this couldn't be
avoided.

I know nothing about basic, but I don't see why OOo couldn't simply check if the
directory is read-only before trying to write into it.
Why not leave the original files as is?

Though a read only user directory is not supported I checked the reason for the
error message. In the current state it is unavoidable because in a "real"
scenario (means: with a writable user directory) the files are needed. Otherwise
you couldn't install basic libraries in UNO packages and you couldn't link to
external basic libraries.

As OOo does not know that the user directory is *intentionally* read only it
must issue an error message here.

The real cure for the problem would be to make OOo run without a user directory.
In this case OOo wouldn't try to write the files at all. But this is a
(comparably big) feature and not a defect.
