Perhaps my default language setting (German (Germany)) has an additional
influence ?
OOo version tested is 2.0.2 (is a requirement in my project).
Steps in detail:
Create new empty impress presentation
Enter some senseless text
Tools->Options->Language Settings -> Language
Set "western" to "French (France)". (*)
Save As "test.ppt"
Open in PowerPoint (from Office 2000)
Check Tools->Language and voila there is "English (Great Britain)"
Same result when checking "only this document" at (*) and using "Catalanian".
Reimporting the "Catalanian" ("only this document") test.ppt, I find the default
setting (German (germany)) in Tools->Options...
