The big reason for Debian/Ubuntu doing it that way is so, when you upgrade the package, your local changes don't get clobbered. It's also a good idea to read through all the defaults that Debian provides. There are some gotchas with some of their default entries. Not that I can remember them off hand. (err: host jon OOM pid 0) In my case, I copied 15-av_scanners.conf to 45-av_scanners.conf and updated that one. If Debian/Ubuntu updates 15-av_scanners, all my edits are preserved and I have the distribution version there as well. I updated my changes to reflect the semantics of Spamassassin. It returns
'autolearn=unavailable' if the message isn't scanned, ie. too big.
Use this at your own risk. It seems to work well for me.
Oh, and cheers to the developers, I found the code easy to read :) Feel free
to include this, with attribution, if you think others may find it useful.
