[android-developers] Re: New SDK Available

2008-12-10 Thread Dan

I solved my problem with the corrupted download today. It appears that
there's something strange with the combination of this hotel's
internet access and Google's servers. When I downloaded the Mac SDK at
work, I had no problems. I've downloaded much larger files (from other
sites) with the hotel's connection without any form of corruption. I
can't explain it.

If anybody else is still having a problem, try downloading the file
using a different connection. Perhaps there's a way to use the G1 to
download it. :)

Really, which brand?

I hope, you don't mean that "RI" (Reference Implementation) for the
Emulator by T-Mobile...?

Kogan from Australia has come up with a real phone based on Andriod.
And it seems unlocked by default.

I'd only use the G1 if it was unlocked and FREE for Developers.

(well maybe G1 for US$1 might work well in advertising, but without
their contract bogus ;-)

Just wanted to point out that I'm still having trouble extracting the
Mac edition of the 1.0r2 SDK. I've tried downloading via Safari,
Firefox, and Curl. Strangely, I get different MD5 values from
subsequent downloads. Same file size, but a binary diff reveals a LOT
of differences, but not apparent corruption. There will be a few bytes
inserted here, and a few bytes removed there. I can't explain it.

Here are some specs on the G1 -->
http://www.htc.com/www/product/g1/specification.html

Of interest is the networking section.

HSPA/WCDMA and Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE are supported.

Keep in mind WCDMA is a lot different than the standard CDMA. Its often
called UMTS and the only major
telecoms in the USA that support it are T-mobile and At&t.

[android-developers] Re: New SDK Available

2008-12-08 Thread Josh Roesslein
Adding an one app mandatory submission requirement will only result in a
surge of untested, low quality apps flooding the app store.
I'm sure there will be enough dev phones to go around. If not then its the
good old first come first served. :)

[android-developers] Re: New SDK Available

2008-12-08 Thread Jean-Baptiste Queru

Search back in this thread for my reply about a day ago. The answer is
no, the Android Dev Phone 1 doesn't work with Sprint, because Sprint
is not a GSM operator.

[android-developers] Re: New SDK Available

2008-12-08 Thread Teo

About the new dev phone, there should probably be one mandatory app
submission (if there isn't one already) because otherwise there will
be an avalanche of 'developers' which will affect dev phone supplies
for future devs, or devs in countries which will be included in the
program... I hope i'm making sense :)

Thanks,
Teo

frequency? I guess we'll all know by the end of the week.

Mobile's. So the phone will work and you can make calls with AT&T and
use their Edge network, but you'll never get 3G connectivity.

[android-developers] Re: New SDK Available

2008-12-07 Thread Jean-Baptiste Queru

Sprint moved away from GSM a very long time ago, and this phone is
GSM-only and therefore doesn't work on Sprint's network. If you're in
the US, T-Mobile is the best operator to use the Android Dev Phone 1
on (and if you already have a G1 you can swap the SIM between the
phones). It'll work on AT&T's network but you won't have any 3G data.

Will this unlocked phone work with a Sprint/Nextel SIM card? I've heard they're
not compatible with most SIM-capable phones.

[android-developers] Re: New SDK Available

2008-12-06 Thread gjs

Hi,

Many many thanks for finally making an unlocked DEV phone available
(largely) worldwide.

This is great news for us folks in the non T-Mobile regions and will
help provide a level playing field for ADC II participants.

( In my own case I decided not to wait as no news of DEV phones was
forthcoming before now, so I took the *big* gamble of procuring a US
G1 privately through ebay - for a premium. I managed to get it working
after purchasing an unlock code and configuring the GPRS setting to
work with Optus 3G in Australia. )

If the DEV phone is to automatically receive 'OTA' updates - without
warning like the G1 - I would suggest that people double check their
local mobile data plans to ensure they don't get slugged for excessive
download charges.

Once again thanks, this is a great (xmas/holiday) present for many
Android devs :-)

Regards

The Android Dev Phone 1 supports 3G in Europe. It depends on the
carrier, the country, etc. though. But it should work in most cases.

[android-developers] Re: New SDK available - 0.9 SDK beta

2008-08-26 Thread Qwavel

Thanks for bringing up an important and related point.

We are upset that the bluetooth API has been pulled, but I guess it
wouldn't have been much good if it didn't work well or was not
'comprehensive'.

Java developers are used to JSR82. J2ME bluetooth apps are currently
written to JSR82. If Android is not going to support JSR82 it would
be better if their API could at least support the basic things that
can be done with JSR82.

One example is L2CAP sockets. I see in this new blog entry:
http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2008/08/some-information-on-apis-removed-in.html
that "L2CAP socket support from Java" is being considered but is not
certain, whereas this is supported in JSR82.

If the Android Bluetooth API is not only different then JSR82 but also
quite inferior in functionality then it will be hard to port JSR82
apps to Android and it will simply make the Android SDK look bad.

Please add the bluetooth API in Android 1.1 and please make it
possible for us to port our existing JSR82 apps to Android.

Thanks,
Tom.

It looks like I am not the only one looking for the Bluetooth API. I
just decided to give up on Android totally. Without the Bluetooth API
it's not even worth taking a look at anymore. I am sorry I even got

Terribly sorry -- I didn't recognize RFCOMM from the Bluetooth context.
I'm used to thinking of things at the profile level.

[android-developers] Re: New SDK available - 0.9 SDK beta

2008-08-19 Thread viktor

No offense, but one of the reason Bluetooth was removed from SDK is
“timeline of getting certain Bluetooth profile implementation
certified”. Bluetooth SIG certifies a Bluetooth product (read device),
so we talking about “the phone” here.
http://www.blueradios.com/Bluetooth_Global_Certification_Requirements.pdf
The official certification process is available to Bluetooth SIG
members at www.bleutooth.org
For example, Apple had to go thru the certification process to have
the iPhone listed here:
http://www.bluetooth.com/Bluetooth/Products/Products/Product_Details.htm?ProductID=5777

There is only one Android phone that was announced and coming this
fall:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/08/18/AR2008081801201.html
It is unclear when other Android devices will become available at
retail.

>From marketing standpoint, it is important to know if an application
that uses RFCOMM to connect to a custom hardware via Bluetooth (e.g.
SplashPlay from challenge Top 50) will be able to run on this phone
immediately, in future or never.

Both your and my questions are important. I hope Google will answer
them all.

Arguably, none of the above, because there is no such thing as "*the*
phone" (emphasis mine).

Android will most likely be used on a wide range of devices. These will
likely support various sets of Bluetooth profiles, no different than any
other phones made today.

Many Bluetooth functions would likely work beneath the level of Android
applications, no different than with other smartphone operating systems.
For example, you don't have to be running some downloaded magical
Windows Mobile application to use the handsfree profile -- that's
handled solely by hardware and Windows Mobile itself.

Given all that, *my* questions are:

-- Which Bluetooth profiles will the Android OS handle on its own (given
hardware support for said profile)?

-- What means do developers have for adding support for other Bluetooth
profiles not handled directly by the Android OS? If the answer is "not
at the application level, only by modifying the core Android OS", would
you consider addressing this scenario when writing up the documentation
for how the community can contribute back to Android, once it goes open
source?

Dear Google representatives,

Since Bluetooth seems to be hottest topic for the SDK 0.9, please
clarify the level of Bluetooth support in the first Android phone that
is coming this fall.

Which of the following is correct?
1. The phone does not have Bluetooth hardware.
2. The phone has disabled Bluetooth hardware that can be enabled with
a future SDK update.
3. The phone has Bluetooth hardware and supports basic Bluetooth
features such as pairing and RFCOMM.

My application used the GTalkServices API for a communication in
multiplayer game.
It's a bad news for me that this API is removed from the 0.9 SDK.

If i'm continue to develop my application using the M5 SDK, the
GTalkService is still supported by android isn't it?
Because this API is one of the main features in my application.

Well, I'm hoping Android continues to advance as a platform, which will
inevitably mean *some* amount of API changes (along with orthogonal API
additions). I'd hate for Android to be permanently frozen in the 1.0
state, no matter how slick 1.0 will seem at release time.

My grousing wasn't aimed at the changes in the SDK, just that I have a
pile of examples to work through. It's the price I chose to pay a few
months ago, when I elected to get a book out based on M5. No biggee, just
a chunk o' work to get done.
