[arch-general] Few questions/issues with linux-grsec

2014-07-28 Thread Divan Santana
Greetings Archers :)

Been trying out linux-grsec kernel and overall pretty pleased with it.

Just have 2 issues with it and wondering how best to resolve them:

1) virtualbox modules for grsec has following issue
  dkms install vboxhost/$(pacman -Q virtualbox|awk {'print $2'}|sed
's/\-.\+//') -k $(uname -rm|sed 's/\ /\//')

  DKMS make.log for vboxhost-4.3.14 for kernel 3.15.5.201407170639-2-grsec

2) How best to get a tun.ko module for linux-grsec? Seems not to be included in
the kernel.

[arch-general] security problem in X with screen saver

2012-01-18 Thread Divan Santana
Hi All,

As per http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTA0NTA

There is a quite a serious security problem.

Is there a patch coming out soon?
Does anyone yet know a workaround to this in the meanwhile?
Can it be announced?

Latest updates seem to fix the graphics 100%(hopefully I'm not speaking too
soon). Excellent.

Downgrade to 2.6.37.5/6 and confirm it's the kernel.
Then search for a bug, join the bug report, or file one.

I had some really horrible graphics with my ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 and
open source ati driver since updating to 2.6.38.2. Luckily the latest xorg and
newer ati driver is out.

I will test it and take it from there.

This is a good point. 2.6.38 should help with this issue under high load.

Out of interest are there any distros that customize the default kernel for
desktop usage? If so, is there arch documentation on this(perhaps I should
search first).

I have a Mobility Radeon HD 3650 and since 2.6.37 + xf86-video-ati=6.14.0
graphics are more stable and faster than catalyst. Open source video drivers
are really getting there. Thank goodness no more catalyst driver for me.

Unfortunately no MAC software is officially supported in Arch Linux.
I wouldn't mind using AppArmor /Tomoyo instead.

I don't see the harm in have proper SELinux support. It would make it easier
to learn SELinux if one could have it officially supported and working well on
everyone's Arch laptop.

Plus added security is a good practice. Not sure why having official SELinux
should stir some to vote against it when one can easily disable it.

I've also this, specifically when playing music via amarok and KDE setup using
phonon-vlc as preferred and specifically just before and after song change.

As a result, I still use phonon-xine until this is fixed.

[arch-general] Viewing changelogs for packages

2011-02-15 Thread Divan Santana
Hi,

I'd like to view the change logs of new packages when new updates are
available.

I see pacman -Qc would display a changelog of a package installed.
It seems that 95% of the packages(on my system anyway) don't have a changelog.

Is pacman -Qc supposed to show upstream changelogs for a package or is it
really for arch specific changes to a package? Is there plans to include
changelogs in packages more in future?

How do other users follow the changelog of particular package?
I suppose just visit upstream package site's website and read what's new?

[arch-general] tpm and suspend issues [resolved]

sudo lsmod|grep tpm
results in nothing.

I can then suspend successfully.

I wonder if this related to the marked as fixed bug in 2010-08 last year:
http://kerneltrap.org/mailarchive/linux-kernel/2010/7/8/4591885/thread
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16256

$ uname -a
Linux fakename 2.6.36-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Jan 8 14:15:27 CET 2011 x86_64
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8600 @ 2.40GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

I disabled this in rc.conf by adding this to MODULES !tpm !tpm_bios
!tpm_tis however now I just disabled the security chip in the BIOS (lenovo
W500).

It seems this tpm is for some chip that provides hardware crypt security
features which I don't use.

I'm not sure if I should report this upstream or not, thought maybe you guys
might have a better suggestion?

Any thoughts
