I did a rollback too , seems like there's no easy way to go back from nonfree
to free drivers.

I just hit a similar issue when trying to switch from nvidia to nouveau. I
was trying to switch from i3/Xorg to sway/Wayland. The proprietary nvidia
driver is unsupported with sway. I uninstalled the nvidia modules like you
did, disabled the lightdm display manager, and booted into nouveau. It
worked but was much too slow to be usable with my 4K display. I was getting
major lag. It was like getting 1 HZ refresh rate moving my mouse pointer
around.

I switched back to i3/Xorg with the nvidia modules but when rebooting to
test, it failed with a black screen like you got. When I tried "sudo
modprobe nvidia" I got an "exec format error" message and the nvidia
module refused to load.

The nvidia module installed to the extramodules directory so I expected it
to work with the 4.16.4 kernel I'm running even though it was built on
4.16.1, but apparently that is not the case. Uninstalling and reinstalling
nvidia and nvidia-utils did not fix things.

Eventually I gave up and did a "zfs rollback" to restore the previous
system state and everything was fine after that. Sorry I don't have good
solution for you, but I wanted to chime in that I also encountered the same
problem and it was related to the nvidia modules not being loadable.

Eric

[arch-general] Firefox screen tearing

2018-04-25 Thread Junayeed Ahnaf via arch-general
Hello,

I am using firefox v 60.0b15 installed from AUR. My hardware is:

  1.
AMD 1600 Processor
  2.
nVidia 1500Ti GPU running nVidia proprietary driver
  3.
16GB 3200MHz RAM

There should not be any problem running firefox with this configuration but I
am facing weird lag and screen tearing when I turn on smooth scrolling. Things
I have tried:

  1.
Enabled / Disabled hardware acceleration
  2.
Applied 1.2, 1.3, 1.6, 1.8, 1.10, 1.11 from
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Firefox/Tweaks
I had scrolling issue before trying anything, still have them.

My desktop environment is KDE and Kernel version is 4.16.3-1-ARCH. I have all
the updates installed. What can I do to make the tearing go away? Turning off
smooth scrolling does solve the issue but I'd like to keep it on.

Thanks

It's possible in Mac and Windows but is it possible in Arch ? Here

AFAIK the package is already installed, the next step is to configure CUPS

Arch Linux is not like desktop focused distributions. Therefore, it's
ISO does not come with "everything but the kitchen sink" where you have
a turn-key desktop after running a GUI installer or install script. It
has the base set of software you need to assemble what you need for your
 given install target.

 Isn't it widely accepted as
the go to method of connecting to internet in Linux?
No, not in general like that. Network manager is primarily used for
network management with desktop environments, most commonly Gnome, as
the other respondent noted. Arch Linux is used in many different ways,
 not only for the desktop.

 Is there any reason
for it not to be default?
The defaults for the ISO would generally be the simpler options, and
less likely to be something large with a lot of dependencies. Also,
minimalist ISOs were the norm rather than the exception in years past
and for Reasons. They still are in some cases or with some distros.
Also, there are not always application defaults with Arch Linux like you
might have with a desktop distro. Arch is "DIY/build your own and choose
your own defaults (for the most part)" type of distro.

[arch-general] Why there is no NetworkManager in ArchISO

2017-07-23 Thread Junayeed Ahnaf via arch-general
Hello,

Why is there no NetworkManager in ArchISO? Isn't it widely accepted as
the go to method of connecting to internet in Linux? Is there any reason
for it not to be default?

Thanks

I did it . Steps :

1. Edit /etc/sddm.conf and added user and session under autologin
2. sudo systemctl --force enable sddm
3. cat /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service to see if everything
works
4. sudo reboot

[arch-general] Automatic login

2017-07-18 Thread Junayeed Ahnaf via arch-general
Hello,

How to enable automatic login in arch (using sddm and KDE) .

I tried enabling it in /etc/sddm.conf but it didn't work. Also I saw
something like getty but I didn't understand what it does or how to make it
work. In all other linux there is an option called "user" in settings but
that is absent in Arch.

Thanks in advance.

Install ark. And I would stop running random commands you find on the internet
if you don't fully understand what they do, especially as root.

[arch-general] No extract menu on Dolphin

2017-07-16 Thread Junayeed Ahnaf via arch-general
Hello,

I can't see any "extract here > autodetect subfolder" menu on dolphin . After
googling I found out it is a common problem in Ubuntu and the fix is

sudo ln -s /usr/share/kde4/servicetypes/konqpopupmenuplugin.desktop
/usr/share/kservicetypes5/

but it doesn't work on arch. Any idea how can I fix this in arch ?

Thanks

[arch-general] Problem regarding Resolution on Nvidia

2017-06-01 Thread Junayeed Ahnaf via arch-general
Hello,

I am using nvidia proprietary driver on arch linux (GNOME with Wayland), My
HDMI port broke so I connected my monitor using DVI ports (with VGA adapter
since my monitor does not have any DVI output). Now my aspect ratio is fixed on
4:3. I can't make it to 16:9 nor can I use 1920*1080.

Steps I've taken :
1. Following archwiki I tried to create a new rule for xrandr but it failed
2. I tried editing xorg.conf refresh rate and it added some weird resolution
but still no 16:9
3. Added subsection on "Screen" defining resolution, it did not do anything ;(

What can I do? Any suggestion will be helpful.

Thanks in advance.

J
