Sound engineer Sridhar dead

Staff Reporter

H. Sridhar

CHENNAI: He could make any singer sound extraordinary. One of the best sound
engineers in India, H. Sridhar passed away here on Monday, following a cardiac
arrest. He was 48.
Sridhar, Chief Sound Engineer, Media Artists, had worked with A.R. Rahman as
the chief sound engineer in all his films.
His ear for music and passion for audio engineering made him one of the best in
his field. He entered the industry in 1988, when there was not any
sophisticated technology. Self-taught

His childhood friend and colleague Jayendra Panchapakesan of Real Image recalls
the vibrant and fun-filled childhood they shared.
“He loved playing cricket in our colony at Mylapore.” When he was in Std. IX,
he wanted to learn playing the guitar, and in two years, he taught himself to
play the instrument with ease. “He is a completely self-taught audio-engineer,
too,” Mr. Panchapakesan said.
A winner of the President’s Gold Medal (The National Award for Best
Audiography) for ‘Mahanadi’ (1994), ‘Dil Se’ (1999), ‘Lagaan’ (2001) and
‘Kannathil Muththamittal’ (2003), he is considered the pioneer of the use of
digital sound in Indian films in the DTS format.
Mr. Sridhar also worked with artists of international acclaim, including George
Harrison of The Beatles, John Neptune Kaizan, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Zakir
Hussain, L. Shankar and John McLaughlin. Mr. Sridhar is survived by his wife
and two sons

[arr] Times Obit: Wizard behind Rahman sound no morea

2008-12-01 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
Wizard behind Rahman sound no more

CHENNAI:
Four-time national award-winning sound engineer H Sridhar, whose technical
mastery defined the music of film composers, including A R

Rahman and Harris
Jayaraj, died here on Monday. He was 48.

According to his family,
Sridhar had returned home around 2 am after working with A R Rahman on the Hindi
film ‘Ghajini’. Sridhar went to sleep, but never woke up. He was
taken to a private hospital, where he was declared dead at 10. 15 am.

"Rahman knew him for 25 years
and he was an excellent technician," said a source close to Rahman. "He is the
man whose final nod meant a lot to the music director," he added.

A talented guitarist and
self-taught audiographer, Sridhar’s love of music made him a much
sought-after technician by film music composers.

"I joined his team as a
keyboard player. He was a musician-friendly audiographer and a pleasure to work
with," music director Harris Jayaraj, who worked with him in
‘Satyam’, said. It was Sridhar who first brought Harris to
Rahman’s
notice.

‘Mahanadhi’
(1994), ‘Dil Se’ (1999), ‘Lagaan’ (2001) and
‘Kannathil Muthamittal’ (2003) were the films which fetched him
National Awards.

Speaking to
TOI, Mani Ratnam said Sridhar was not only the sound engineer of his films, but
also a critic and an observer of details in every department. "I can’t
believe that I will not have him with me anymore at the mix," he
said.

"Sridhar was a good
friend of not only the film fraternity, but of musicians of all genres. George
Harrison of The Beatles flew to India so that Sridhar could work on his album.
Sridhar worked in over 200 films including ‘Sivaji’,
‘Guru’, ‘Dasavatharam’, ‘Provoked’,
‘Dil Chahta Hai’, ‘Rangeela’ and ‘Bombay’.
"We are in a state of shock, and he was a rare blend of a musician who could
also be a technician, and be passionate about both," said Senthil Kumar of Real
Image.

The funeral is
scheduled at 10 am on Tuesday. His wife Gowri and two sons, Vinay and Vishal,
survive Sridhar.

Film Music

Hey man,
Its good to see you write after a long time.
And you've come with a very sensitive issue, which if taken even
slightly wrongly, may bring a storm in the group.
So, I'll write carefully, as follows:

There was a time when whatever A R Rahman composed, became
contemporary music. He defined the contemporary music and others
merely followed him. Especially in south, north was not any exception
as well.

Times have changed now, so many young music composers have evolved
and sometimes its hard to distinguish the styles especially because
almost everyone has followed ARR in some manner. And everyone is
copying world music equally well.

Also, we are exposed to American pop/rap more than we ever were.
Copying their beats or making same kind of music has become a fashion.

Now, if you follow very carefully the time between 2000 and 2006, how
successfull do you think ARR's music was as compared to old days.
The only reason is that ARR was still composing his kind of music but
rest of country was more intrested in listening all the american crap
which was wraped nicely in indian style by our very talented copycats.

If you take the example of Guru Dutt, we all know he was a legendary
director, perhaps the best we ever had after Satayjeet Ray (Mani
Ratnam in recent times). He followed his own path, his own unique
style and made movies which were way ahead of their time.
Do you think he was considered legendary, when he was alive?
No.
Do you think he lived a happy and peacefull life?
No.
At the last days of his career, he had to beg small rolls (side
rolls/supporting rolls) to survive. He was so afraid of making a flop
movie that he had to make a movie shadow-directed by his assistant
(Sahib biwi aur gulam). Why?
Because he followed his own style, his own path.
Did our great ancesstors recognize his legendary work while he was
alive?
No.
He became a legend after his death.

Don't you think same could not happen to ARR?
Yes, I believe it could.
If ARR had not changed his style at right time, he would have ended
in same way. And after 20 years our kids would be saying, ARR was a
great music composer, a legendary MD.

Guys, I have seen my friends saying ARR is the greatest music
composer in world when they listened 'Pappu can't dance', 'Shano
Shano', or 'Pathsala'. which all had cotemporary kindish music.
These are the same guys who used to tell me how crap my music choice
was when I used to listen to Zubeidaa, Bose or Nayak or Love you
hamesha. which all had uniqe ARR style.

How many of your friends appriciate Jodhaa Akbar?

So its all surviving instincts. ARR has to do it.
And we should feel lucky because he is doing it. Because if he stays
commercially successfull, he will surely compose an ADA, a JODHAA
AKBAR every once in a while.

I am sorry if I am wrong or if I don't make any sense or if I've got
it compeletly wrong way. But that's how I feel.

Pravinder.

now shifting to more of the contemporary Hindi film music. Now I do
barely listen to the drums/thumps/ time-sliced beats/female harmonies
and all. I am yet to explore fully the Yuvraaj and Ghajini music
scores, though their promos and JTYJN seems to be composed with a
more contemporary Hindi music audience. Ada is an exception as I
believe it has been composed over the years, when the boss was still
having a unique blend of music.

I pray for his family and may his soul rest in peace. He contributed
so much joy and listening pleasure to milliions. He seemed like a
very nice person. I am sure ARR himself must be very disturbed. We
all share this grief.

My request to all: Please keep regular MD visits, esp. as we age into
our 30s and 40s, as Indians worldwide are known to have a higher
incidence of cardiac problems. My wish esp. to ARR himself to get
checked out by MD regularly and follow recommendations.

This is just shocking. H. Shridhar is a brand name when it comes to
scintillating sound and he will be sorely missed.

2008-12-01 Thread Sirish Musician
A. R. Rahman's sound engineer dead

IndiaGlitz
 [Monday, December 01, 2008]

H.
Sridhar, a popular Sound Engineer who has been involved in over a
thousand songs passed away this morning at around 8 am due to a massive
heart attack. The Sound Engineer had been part of A. R. Rahman's team
right from the onset. He was 50.
Having been closely associated with director's Mani
Ratnam, K. Balachander, Bharathiraaja, Shankar, Kamal Haasan, P. C.
Sreeram, Priyadarshan and Ramgopal Varma, H. Sridhar was a towering
icon when it came to mixing music.
H. Sridhar was the recipient of the prestigious
President's Gold Medal (National Award for best Audiography) four times
for the films 'Mahanadhi', 'Dil Se', 'Lagaan' and 'Kannathil
Muthamilttal'.
Sridhar was so talented and was sought after by the
likes of George Harrision (a member of the famous Beatles), Pandit Ravi
Shankar, Zakir Hussain and John McLaughlin to mix music for their
albums.
This true talent will surely be missed by the music fraternity.
Indiaglitz condoles the passing away of H. Sridhar. May his soul rest in peace.

Slumdog Millionaire - music review.
If you have no clue about Slumdog Millionaire is, you might want to read this
first.
Firstly, the album of Slumdog Millionaire is not your conventional
album, it is a collection of the major pieces and songs that go on in
the background; some instrumentals and some vocal tracks put in an
almost chronological order of appearance in the movie. The sound is a
mixture of heavy percussions and Indian classical music.
Note : If I reference to scenes or parts in the movie, they are
enclosed within and , especially for those who
haven’t seen the movie. Do not be too curious else you might spoil the
movie for yourself.
As expected, it kicks off with O .. Saaya with heavy percussions. A.R. Rahman
and M.I.A. take care of the singing. Don’t bother understanding what Rahman
sings, more often than not you wouldn’t have a clue.
Really catchy and it sets the pace in the movie, as
the kids run through the slums followed by an overweight hawaldar
.
The next track is Riots, which is just some rhythm loops and a
couple of other sounds thrown in. Quite passable and not really
deserving a separate soundtrack.
Now this is a great track. Called Mausam & Escape, it starts
with some Indian classical guitar playing accompanied by acoustic
rhythms, then suddenly shoots into some amazing sitar playing, heavy
percussions and catchy rhythm loops.
This starts when Jamal is waiting at the platform for
Latika and continues into the chase as Jamal tries to stop the gang
from taking her forcibly. I am sure you remember this track.
Paper Planes is the single by M.I.A. that was a recent hit in
Britain. This is taken as it is without any changes. It is a nice track
but makes for spectacular viewing in the movie as a train travels
through deserts, cities, green plains and mountains. India in 2
minutes. The trailer which features the above scene and track is here.
Paper Planes Remix is okayish and passable. It does not feature in the movie.
Ringa Ringa is a very interesting song. Rahman acknowledged in an interview
that he used the ‘Choli ke peeche’ track of Laxmikant-Pyarelal in this
album. As you listen to this track, you would probably realize what the
word ‘inspiration’, so overused in the Indian music industry, really
means. He uses the same singers Ila Arun and Alka Yagnik, heavier
background rhythms and a completely different tune but which constantly
reminds you of the original track.
This track features as Jamal and Salim walk in Kamathipura (or some similar
place) to find Latika.
Liquid Dance, I cannot recollect where it appears in the movie, is a
tarana, with the syllables of a tarana, strings that are western
classical (remotely resembling the Spirit of Rangeela tune) and heavy
percussions again. Nicely done, but resembles a background track rather
than a standalone soundtrack.
Latika’s Theme is a masterpiece. The track is just humming, which
plays often in the movie and one of the most soothing tracks you would
have heard in a long long time.
The next is Aaj ki Raat, which is the same track as it is from the
Don OST. I thought there would be some changes, but a quick waveform
analysis showed none [:)]. So if you loved the original track but if
you didn’t like this, please consult a doctor.
The Millionaire track is another fast track which sounds brilliant
in the movie, simply brilliant. This leads to one of the highest
points in the movie.
This plays as the country readies itself for the Who
Wants To Be A Millionaire show, where everyone is hoping that the first
rags to riches story will come true on the show
Gansta Blues is quite passable, which sounds like a track to utilize
the 20 hours/week from rapper Blaaze. I cannot recollect when it plays
in the movie.
Dreams On Fire is the vocal version of Latika’s theme, again sung
beautifully by the same singer Suzanne. Although I would prefer the
humming version anyday.
Now for the final soundtrack which is probably the best track in the
album, although I am sure to get opposing views. Sung by Sukhwinder
Singh, Tanvi Shah & Mahalaxmi Iyer with the best parts in the song
taken by Rahman, deservedly so. Lyrics by Gulzar, it is your
conventional Bollywood song, and one of the better compositions of
Rahman in recent times. This plays at the very end of the movie and the
visuals that accompany it are going to be pleasantly surprising for
everyone watching the movie. Oh and this track ensures that no one
leaves the theater till the last credit has rolled by. Then the lights
come on, and if there are enough females in the room, you might also
catch a few with tears in their eyes at the end.
P.S. : I propose a ban on the release of more than 1 album of A.R. Rahman
within a span of 2 weeks.

This is a very sad and distressing news.

I had the privilege of meeting him (along with other group members) in the 2005
Bangalore Concert. He was a pretty simply person holding a Plastic cover in his
hand, talking jovially to us. You should have seen the way he was working
adjusting the Sounds from the Console area. He was continously busy from 1 PM
to night 1 AM adjusting every bit of the Mike, Speakers and all other Sound
equipements. We were amazed by his talent and the hardwork put in for a
concert. S Sivakumar and K J Singh were also along with him during the concert.

During the concert, we (with Nazeef, Vaidya, Navas) stood near to him in the
console area for 4 hours and were amazed the way he was enjoying the work which
was a pleasant sight to watch.

Sir, I bow to you and May your Soul rest in Peace.

I think H Sridhar also works for Media Artists (http://www.media- artists.com/)
, which works on more Tamil/Hindi films for Sound designing.

PS: I am attaching couple of snaps taken during the 2005 Bangalore concert
involving Mr. H Sridhar.

This is shocking news.Despite having worked with legends like ARR, he had
recently collaborated with the guitar legend John Mclaughlin for his latest
album "Floating Point" which was recorded in ARRs studio in chennai. The full
length DVD released with the audio featured interviews will all legends
collaborating in the album and also h.sridhar . In fact it also shows him
recording  music for the album along with John.

Great sound engineer and a greater human being.

[arr] Re: Rahman cutting back on the number of songs per CD

2008-12-01 Thread Anantha Narayanan
Hi,

I do not think that our boss is willfuly cutting the songs because of
the downloading menace. But this must be due to the director's wish
which is the mandate.

I do not personally like more songs just for namesake. The songs must
be of good quality. Even if there is only one song in CD of our boss,
I am going to buy it and most of us here will follow.

For the downloading menace all musicians everywhere is hit with.

[arr] A message to A.R.Rahman

2008-12-01 Thread Aakarsh
Hello,

We as Indians, witnessed a tragedy in the last 5 days - the Terrorist attacks
in Bombay in which many innocent civilians lost their lives and so did many of
the best cadre cops and commandos.

We, as A.R.Rahman fans, received one more tragic news - that of the untimely
demise of H.Sridhar.

We might not have only expressed it, but H.Sridhar's craftwork has been so much
entwined with Rahman's music and we all have been H.Sridhar's fans as well, all
along. We only never expressed it exactly in that way. but i strongly believe
that all ARR fans would have been and are fans of H.Sridhar (and Sivakumar too)
because he was responsible for the sound of ARR songs. His demise means immense
loss, not only to Rahman, but also to all of us.

At this juncture, I only request Rahman to, IF POSSIBLE, release a personal
album (private album), dedicating it to all those who lost their lives in
Bombay tragedy and H.Sridhar too. An album which is all about peace. I know my
wish seems to be far fetched, but then, i think it would be a humble gesture,
to pay tribute. The reason i am suggesting or proposing this is because i am
sure that Rahman himself might have been terribly moved by these tragedies.

Probably he can do it with "Connections" album too, provided the theme and mood
of the songs in this album are in-line with sentiments i or rather we all feel,
in a time like this.

My message might or might not reach ARR. But i am still trying,by posting it
here, only because we have a huge fans base and if many of the fans here share
the same thoughts as i do, probably it might reach Rahman through some channel.
I hope he reads this or atleast someone from this group can pass this to him.

Just hoping.

Regards
Kamal Aakarsh Vishnubhotla.
