[arr] A. R. Rahman wins London critics award

2008-12-16 Thread kumar0305
Danny Boyle, an English filmmaker came up with the much appreciated
film 'Slumdog Millionaire' with the background score of India's very
own A. R. Rahman. The film was about a poor Mumbai youth who takes
part in a game show to win the first prize and eventually become a
millionaire.

The London Critics Association has lauded A. R. Rahman's talent by
awarding him the prestigious London Critics Award for the year 2008.

'I am happy with this award and I'd like to credit Danny Boyle for
extracting appropriate music from me. Danny has been so meticulous
with his work that both of us have become friends now', said Rahman.

A. R. Rahman with his incredible talent is truly going international.

2008-12-16 Thread Karthik S
Now that I've been asked specifically to opine, well, there's no
justification actually. My justification is the list itself, that's
what 'I' liked this year, in order of preference - if you disagree,
post a comment and let me to appreciate your point of view and the
choice of songs and enhance my musical pleasure. If I still do not
like it, no great shakes, life goes on.

Saw someone else responding in this group to the list earlier with
a...'IMO, JA is...'. That IMO says it all, its an opinion. Just
another opinion :-)

Re: [arr] Oscar Watch: Composer

2008-12-16 Thread Ramesh R
ARR's effort in SdM works great as a combination of songs and score. Evaluated
for just the music score there's not much that stands out for me. For sure, it
supports the movie and the action on screen but does it go beyond that? And I
think I've mentioned this earlier-- there's little or no thematic development
(and that's something I could say for a lot of ARR scores in general). It looks
like he's just scoring the scene. But where is he really connecting the dots?

I'd like to think that a good score is something that, in addition to
supporting the movie, introduces certain ideas, toys with them, and develops
them. Cohesiveness is another attribute that I'm looking for. A good score can
provide a subtext or commentary not just on what's happening on screen, but
also on what might happen or where is this going.

I'm not saying that SdM is a bad score. It's a good soundtrack, and a real
departure for ARR. Latika's theme is lovely-- it represents Jamal's love and
longing and was used to good effect in the end with a summary of the journey.
The action theme (Escape) was another that was put to good use in the chase
sequences.

I just think that there's not much in it to make the cut for best score when
the field is already rich with some great works this year. Alexandre Desplat
has been in great form this year with strong scores for The Curious Case of
Benjamin Button & Largo Wench. Danny Elfman has Milk & Standard Operating
Procedure. James Newton Howard has The Happening & Defiance. Zbigniew Priesner
has Anonyma. Thomas Newman has WALL-E. Adrian Johnston has Brideshead
Revisited. I'm not just blindly putting these names out. There are a number of
sites (Itunes, Youtube, Amazon) where you can listen to free clips.

Anyone remember the Oscar-winning scores of Brokeback Mountain or Babel? Both
were by Gustavo Santaolalla. Both of those were very minimalistic and sparse
with little or no themes. Perhaps the recent trend is that if you have a
wildly popular film, it will just drive the critics and voters into having a
favorable opinion of it for the sub-categories too (yes, I do think that ARR's
score for SdM is riding the crest of the movie's massive popularity). Or
perhaps the critics really do believe in the 'less is more' philosophy. How
else would you explain bewildering decisions like nominating Clint Eastwood for
Best Score for Changeling, or James Newton Howard's dronish score for Michael
Clayton for last year's Oscar? If it's really a trend then I don't like it one
bit and perhaps I'm in the minority here.

As a parting thought I'll link to the youtube clip of what I consider as signs
of brilliant scoring in recent times. Check out the opening scene to Birth
scored by Alexandre Desplat. It's a beauty of construction. There's a delicate
repeating motif with flute followed by the celeste (a Desplat favorite),
drones, bass strings, tympani, romantic violins, horns and a lot more. It does
way more than just scoring the jogging scene. It's proof of why Desplat is
rated so high today.

Karthik has a right to that opinion, but I must extraordinarily
disagree! This in a year when we have been pampered to the max by
Rahman, both sound (and since last week) video-wise!!

Karthik-ji, while you don't have to justify your decision, may we

should they be ideally based on? The number of times a song is
played? By whom? Number of CDs sold? The Milliblog annual round-up is
comparatively simpler - this is a list of songs, across the four
languages (and Indipop) I track music in, that I seem to fondly
recall at the end of the year, with gratitude that they filled my
life with a lot of (musical) joy.

music in Telugu and Kannada, but I do listen to almost everything
that is released in Hindi and Tamil, besides Indipop. Malayalam music
is something I need to get active in 2009, to make this blog and this
list more comprehensive. Also, as you may have already noted, my
musical interests are very, very composer-driven and composer-
specific. Singers and lyricists are secondary, to me personally, so
please don't hold that against this list! I'm quite sure that there
are many more tracks and soundtracks that you may have in mind and
think that they deserved a place in this post - I sure would love to
listen to your opinions…bring them on, in the comments.

did not do well. My brother was not keeping good health those days. So
we had to go around with the script and we were little confused. We
still made money on that film also because of the music by AR Rehman.

By whom? Number of CDs sold? The Milliblog annual round-up is
comparatively simpler - this is a list of songs, across the four
languages (and Indipop) I track music in, that I seem to fondly recall
at the end of the year, with gratitude that they filled my life with a
lot of (musical) joy.

something I need to get active in 2009, to make this blog and this
list more comprehensive. Also, as you may have already noted, my
musical interests are very, very composer-driven and
composer-specific. Singers and lyricists are secondary, to me
personally, so please don't hold that against this list! I'm quite
sure that there are many more tracks and soundtracks that you may have
in mind and think that they deserved a place in this post - I sure
would love to listen to your opinions…bring them on, in the comments.

Angeles. Following the screenings, members will vote to determine
which three, four or five songs become nominees in the category.

A DVD copy of the song clips will be made available to those branch
members who are unable to attend the screening and who request it
for home viewing. A mail-in ballot will be provided.

A maximum of two songs may be nominated from any film. If more than
two songs from a film are in contention, the two songs with the most
votes will be the nominees.

To be eligible, a song must consist of words and music, both of
which are original and written specifically for the film. A clearly
audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and
melody must be used in the body of the film or as the first music
cue in the end credits.

The 81st Academy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday,
January 22, 2009, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn
Theater.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2008 will be
presented on Sunday, February 22, 2009, at the Kodak Theatre at
Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC
Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised
live in more than 200 countries worldwide.

yes i am also very much concerned (actually disturbed) with this
remarks of Ramesh and would like to ask him what he expects there for
it to be nominated. i mean we all know SdM score is being nominated in
all major awards till now (except a few) and in fact it has already
won 5 of them (LAFCA Awards, NYCCO Awards, IPA Satellite Awards, San
Diego Critics Award, Black Reel Awards) then what is the reason u
think it is not nomination-worthy??? i will appreciate if u could
elaborate.

Milliblog Annual Music Round-up 2008
Annual music round-ups are getting increasingly difficult. What should they be
ideally based on? The number of times a song is played? By whom? Number of CDs
sold? The Milliblog annual round-up is comparatively simpler - this is a list
of songs, across the four languages (and Indipop) I track music in, that I seem
to fondly recall at the end of the year, with gratitude that they filled my
life with a lot of (musical) joy.

But I need to be honest here. I do not listen to every piece of music in Telugu
and Kannada, but I do listen to almost everything that is released in Hindi and
Tamil, besides Indipop. Malayalam music is something I need to get active in
2009, to make this blog and this list more comprehensive. Also, as you may have
already noted, my musical interests are very, very composer-driven and

[arr] Nahin Samen - A.R. Rahman?

2008-12-16 Thread nishantsgarg
I have a doubt about the song Nahin Samne from Taal. As mentioned in
the credits the main vocals in the song are by Hariharan and
Sukhwinder Singh but I feel the humming part that comes after the
first two lines Dekho chhodkedil ko aate hain... ihas vocals by
A.R. Rahman. The same part repeats in the song but with vocals by Chorus.

So is that first humming part bye A.R. Rahman?

nominated? Not to defend Rahman but just curious to know.
