Hi Mike, all,

I've been troubleshooting FTS related bugs with BMC over the last
weeks.. We're running on Solaris 10, Oracle and ARS 7.0.1 Patch 3 and
ran into very strange behaviour (indexing fails, takes extremely long
- i.e. more then 3 days on 250k records, failover within the server
group only works sometimes although
Full-Text-Indexer-Recovery-Interval is set to 2 minutes), etc.

Is anybody else experience similar problems?

Thanks & regards,

Re: Problem with Push Fields in a Table Loop

2006-10-26 Thread George Barsan

Hi Alex,

You should add `! to the filter name to ensure that the actions are
executed in the desired order. Push fields actions are otherwise
delayed into a later phase and executed as a bulk after the Set Fields
actions..

You can find further details on the phases and their purpose in the
documentation..

But there's a problem: it always push the same data. It's not a mistake with
the Table I'm looping, because I tested using set fields and displayed
messages with the value and both work.

Does someone know what may be happening?

Re: System hangs with Sync Search Database

2006-10-26 Thread George Barsan

Hi!

Sometimes it takes very long to generate the Sync Search Database and
the Admin tool seems froozen - that depends on the number of forms &
workflow elements you have on your server. I assume that the server
was still processing the request and you've been able to log in again
as soon as it was finished.

ARS 6.3, HPUX server, Oracle 9.2 db, Admin tool 7

Dear Listeners,

I just now tried to sync the search database for the first
time since trying out the v7 admin tool. The process hung, so
I killed the admin tool. When I tried to log back in I got:

***
ARERR [90] Cannot establish a network connection to the AR
System server : helpdesk.jmu.edu (0) : RPC: Program not registered
Unable to successfully log in to any server.
***

Other Remedy users using the client user tool got the same
message.

I restarted the ARS server twice but it didn't do any good. I
called our system administrator and asked him to restart the
machine. But while I was talking with him, the problem
mysteriously went away and we all could log in.

Any idea what caused this? Is there some incompatibility
between the ARS 6.3 system, and the v7 Sync Search Database
function?

I really like the Sync Search Database feature, but am afraid
to update it for fear of shutting down the Remedy system. I
guess I could try going back to the 6.3 Admin tool and see if
that helps, but even that scares me.

Any suggestions?

Running ARR reports via midtier / limitations

2006-10-11 Thread George Barsan

Hi all,

I have to implement a "Save as" functionality for two fields, which I
did using the open window / report / destination = File functionality.
It works perfectly both within the FAT and the web client, except:

- File name: I couldn't find a way to set a default file name - ARS
currently proposes "Report.rep" which is not user friendly

- The FAT client generates a text file - exactly as needed. On the web
however, the file is HTML "formatted" - although it has the same name.
Is there a way to disable this "feature"? I couldn't find anything in
the documentation..

- Fields longer then 999 characters are not supported, but I guess
that's a "limitation" ;) The application has to run on the web and the
Chrystal Report license is unfortunately not an option at the moment.

The environment is ARS 7 P2 (server, midtier, admin, user) running on Windows.

Suggestions are highly appreciated!

Many thanks & all the best,

George

Subject
Considering switching to Tomcat on W2K3/IIS6
for ARS 7 architecture

What are the issues that I might run into if I use
Tomcat 5.x instead of
ServletExec 5.x for mid-tier 7 running on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise
and IIS 6.0?  I got the distinct impression at UserWorld that BMC
Remedy
was seriously considering switching to Tomcat from ServletExec as the
default application server underlying mid-tier 7.x, and there are
several other reasons for considering this that are present in the 7.x
environment:

Remedy Knowledge Management 7 (RKM) requires/supports either ServletExec
or Tomcat (or roll your own in the dark as commented on by Tony
Worthington earlier this month).

The SLM 7 Collector currently requires JBoss and only runs on the AR
Server, but will reportedly be updated to use ServletExec and/or Tomcat
and run on the mid-tier server or another web server.

So far so good - ServletExec will still work with everything, except...

Crystal Reports Server XI / Business Objects XI requires either Tomcat
or .NET 2.0 - it will NOT use ServletExec. In fact, if you take the
defaults (Java not .NET) the Crystal Server installer will ignore
ServletExec and install an instance of Tomcat without further warning.

So, if I want to run mid-tier 7, RKM 7, Crystal Reports Server XI, and
SLM 7 Collector all on a single web server then the only common java
application server _appears_ to be Tomcat. For all I know, the mid-tier
7.1 (?) installer will actually install Tomcat by default, but I need to
install something now instead of waiting. The minimalist June 2006 White
Paper "Configuring Tomcat 5.x web server and application server"
assumes
prior knowledge of Tomcat and only addresses a couple of settings; what
else should I know about running it underneath mid-tier and the other
BMC Remedy or related components?

Christopher Strauss, Ph.D.
Remedy Database Administrator
University of North Texas Computing Center
http://remedy.unt.edu/helpdesk/

P.S. The other fun part of architecture planning for ARS 7 is the SQL
Server databases - ARS needs ARSystem of course, and SLM wants direct
access to it, but RKM, as well as Crystal Report Server, want their own
separate SQL databases or in Crystal's case will install the MSDE! Right
now I am planning a dedicated SQL Server 2005 machine for each AR Server
machine to host all of the various databases - in the past I kept SQL
Server on the AR Server and that worked just fine, but there's too much
baggage to haul along now. Hummingbird SearchServer installs its own SQL
database and JDBC driver on the mid-tier server already, so I don't want
several _more_ SQL Server or MSDE databases on the web server as well.

No, not yet - but I'm going to do that..

What I tried to do is to separate the actions from one large AL into 3
smaller ones. The funny thing is, that I ended up with an
open-window-AL (let's call it ReportInternal), for which I have a
handy def file and it works fine. However, I need a set fields action
running in front of it. I had two ideas:

1) I tried to add it to the ReportInternal-AL => open window fails
2) I tried to create a separate AL (called GetReportData) running with
a lower order => open window fails

Importing GetReportData-AL messes up all open window actions even in
other AL behind that form, although they are running on totally
different conditions. As soon as I delete the AL GetReportData, the
open window actions are working again..

Next, I exported both AL's as XML and copy & pasted the missing set
field action in an editor and import the new XML.. Same result => open
window fails :(

I guess that there is a relationship between the set-field and the
open window action... However, I've ran out of ideas..

Re: AL stopped working (no changes on AL)

2006-09-06 Thread George Barsan

I had an AL just stop working all of the sudden and what I had to do was
delete it and then re-import the AL from the Prod server. Sometimes
AL's get corrupted. Now my AL has no more problems on my Dev server

If this does not work, at least it only takes a couple of minutes to
do

Hope this helps

Have you defined the Report Server option in the User Tool to point to
the dev server. If so, does the report exist on the Report form on dev

If I have misread this problem then please ignore this.

Hi Nyall,

I didn't define the report server - my understanding was that it uses
the server I'm currently logged in if nothing is defined (I'm only
logged in into dev). I added the servername as you suggest, cleaned
the cache and restarted the client - still the same behaviour.. But a
good point, thanks for suggesting!

The report exists on the dev server too. As said, it even runs fine
partly - until it suddenly stopps for some unknown reason..

Lars,

which patch are you using? My initial guess was that it's client
related, but after testing the application on several workstations
(same behaviour on all of them) it seems like a server issue.

I unfortunately don't have access to the support website at the moment
and therefore can't verify if something is mentioned in the release
notes of the patches > 13 (we're on server P13 here)..

Re: AL stopped working (no changes on AL)

I have exactly the same behaviour on another (even simpler) AL on the

I highly appreciate any suggestions..

I would rather recommend to build a separate form for them where you
can exactly control what they are allowed to do and push from there

Robert,

Are you sure that this problem is caused by IIS6? Which patch of the

related to the load on the Midtier server?

**

Hello list,

we are running with Window Server 2003 SP1, IIS6 and Remedy v6.3.

At MidTier we are facing the "RPC Procedure unavailable" issue from time to
time ... when running a Google search I noticed some posting that said that
when running the patcher and applying all available fixes, that the issue
was then gone.

Unfortunately we can't do that with application fixes and therefore have to
name specific Hotfix / KB entries which fix that behaviour and can then
apply this specific patch.

I was wondering if anyone has more insights on that error, or may even know
which hotfix needs to be applied for fixing this RPC failure.

The ones I have digged up so far (but not installed yet) are these :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/898060/en-us
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/887222/en-us
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908521/en-us

We will also run a check to list what KB / Hotfixe could be applied at the
server at all and dig through them.

If anyone has an insight on that one, thank you.

Best greetings, Robert

Hi Brian,

Yep, if you have several ISBN's in one field and try to run search for

'ISBNinRemoteForm' LIKE (( "%" + $ISBNtoSearch$) + "%")

it won't work. I would do it differently:

1) Create a transaction form ("Book Search"), in which one record is
created per Query
2) Behind that form, build a work flow that:
 * assigns a unique ID to each search
  * walk through the ISBNtoSearch field and generate one record per
ISBN-number in a second form (i.e. "Book Search Request" storing the
unique search ID there as key)
3) Generate a join form between the "Book Search Request" form and the
one where all known ISBN's are stored
4) Create a table and using the join form created in step 3 to present
only records which exist in both forms for that specific search
5) Create i.e. an escalation which cleans up and removed searches &
search requests older then 24h

Hi Brian

I think you should be able to do this with a simple table field
qualification. Say you have a form with a field containing the string
of
ISBN values in a field called ISBN List, and a table field pointing to
your
book records which have an ISBN data field.

Normally for a table field you would have a qualification like (
'DataTableField' LIKE ( $CurrentFormField$ + "%" )). In this case you
need
to turn the qualification round, like

$ISBN List$ LIKE (( "%" + 'ISBN') + "%" )

To allow the search to ignore the dashes, you would need a 'shadow'
field on
your book asset record (set by a filter) containg a stripped version of
the
ISBN. Then you could change the table field qualification to

($ISBN List$ LIKE (( "%" + 'ISBN') + "%" )) OR ($ISBN List$ LIKE ((
"%" +
'ISBNStripped') + "%" ))

It won't be the most efficient query, but it should work

Re: ARS Upgrade from 5.1 to 7.0

Hello,

I'm currently working on an cluster upgrade from a v5.1.2 straight to
v7 - all applications running on that boxes have been developed
in-house (the out-of-the-box applications are running on a separate
environment) and the first tests have been successful without any
issues worth mentioning. We're running on Oracle & Solaris with a huge
client base using both Midtier and fat clients.

Would it be an easier transition to go to 6.3 then to 7.0 at
some point in the future?

We run just the base ARS package.

ARS API - Java: Proxy.ARDeleteMenu(ARServerUser context, NameID mnu) function

2006-07-18 Thread George Barsan

Hello list,

I lost a few hours troubleshooting a problem caused by the method
ARDeleteMenu which doesn't seem to work. Although the context is
correctly initialized and works fine for the Util.ARExport run which
is the first step, the ARDeleteMenu (step 2 in the programm) always
fails with the following error (independently if the menu exists or
not):

MessageType: 2
MessageNum: 90
MessageText: Cannot open catalog; Message number = 90
AppendedText: (0) : RPC: Program not registered
at com.remedy.arsys.api.Proxy.ARDeleteMenu(Native Method)
at com.upc.xmlgateway.ArsConnector.deleteMenus(ArsConnector.java:512)

at com.upc.ar.Worker.process(Worker.java:48)
at com.upc.ar.ArHelper.process(ArHelper.java:37)
at com.upc.ar.ArHelper.main(ArHelper.java:32)

Has anyone else experienced the same problem? I tested it with the
5.1.2 and 7.0 API & same versions of servers in all possible
combinations (running the Java programm on Windows and the servers on
Solaris).

The reviews on hotel booking sites such as expedia are all very useful, but have you ever found a bad
review on these sites? I can highly recommend http://www.tripadvisor.com/. The comments there usually give you a hint of what you can really expect.GeorgeP.S. I'm not related to this site in any way ;-)

Did you try to set the ARTCPPORT variable (i.e. "export ARTCPPORT=12345") in the Tomcat start up script? That did it for us a while ago and I think that it's not yet resolved in patch 13.George

Now don't yell at me...but we are run ARS 6.3.0 and Midtier 6.03.00 patch 013.  It does happen during the day, but heavy load is relative, and if this server considers this heavy load, I certainly don't.  We rarely have more than 50 concurrent users on the server, and I know less than half are using the mid-tier.

Also, when it does die, and I restart it, the flashboards seems to act lost.  We have one that the query line is 'Assigned To' = $USER$ and everytime it refreshes it pulls back a different users records.  Is it very odd.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. And for the record, the mid-tier and flashboards app are on the same machine, which is a different machine than the AR app. Thanks again,

Hi Dmitry,You probably should start at the beginning and have a look at the "Developing AR SystemApplications: Basic" document / in particular to the "Special Run Process and $PROCESS$ Commands" section.

"Ctrl+D" is enough for the moment.

I've just tried to create an Activelink(run process Application-Query-Delete-Entry ...), but the foollowing

I think I should set some enviromental variables in order

Dear Dmitry,
  It
depends on how many entries you have on the form.If its just a simple deletion
of entries you can use the user tool and delete the entries (CTRL + D). If you
want to build workflow to delete the entries you have to write an AL guide and
get the list of entry ids on the form. Use the Run Process commands to delete
the entries after looping through the records. Read the guides you will
know exactly what i am talking about. Let me know if you require more
clarification.

I'm not familiar with IIS6, but this would be a really easy task with Apache..1) Setup a Virtual Host for http://yourserver.com2) Create an index.htm(l) in the DocumentRoot directory for the HTTP-virtual host:

https://yourserver.com">
Proceed to the https://yourserver.com
">HTTPS interface.
3) Setup a Virtual Host for https://yourserver.com
& configure ARS to use this addressI assume that something similar should be possible with IIS too.GeorgeOn 5/1/06, Heider, Stephen

Re: RPC bind failure error

Hi Balaji,We had some similar issues with a 6.3 Midtier, although on an lower patch level. A colleague of mine found out that the Midtier server "lost" the configured TCP port setting under high load. His solution was to set the ARTCPPORT variable - which seem to be used as fallback - in the start up script of our application server.
However, we communicated this issue & solution to Remedy and it should be solved in the meanwhile, but I unfortunately don't know in which patch set.GeorgeOn 4/24/06,

There is IMHO no separate licence for the Email Engine. Instead, I would guess that you reached the limit of 2000 records in one of the forms. Is your development server unlicensed?Regards,George

This is on our test system (we are migrating from ARS 5.1.1/Helpdesk 4 on Win2K to ARS 6.3, Helpdesk 6 on a Win2k3 server), our e-mail engine wasn't working (or even enabled, but I didn't do the configuration)

Switched on e-mail logging, and after the mail engine tries to connect to the SMTP server, there is a message about "You have reached the maximum number of database entries "

I'm just trying to resolve our issue with licenses (the temporary licenses we had expired), but I'm interested in the requirements for the e-mail engine.  It never struck me that it really needed a license as such.  Guess I was completely and utterly wrong.

Thanks all,
