I know this story - I think they had weapons of mass destruction, too. Seems the further away we get from history, the more it changes. Must have something to do with no standards or licensure to call oneself historian. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, "dfsavgny" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Is nothing sacred? Is nothing sacred? Tom, better cancel those indian outfits. The History Channel will be airing "The Untold Story of the Mayflower" on Nov 19. It is going to shatter some legends with facts. For instance, How did even that many survive? In his history of Plymouth Colony, Governor William Bradford himself provides one answer: robbing Indian houses and graves. The Mayflower hove to first at Cape Cod. An armed company of Pilgrims staggered out. Eventually they found a deserted Indian habitation. The newcomershungry, cold, sickdug open burial sites and ransacked homes, looking for underground stashes of food. After two days of nervous work, the company hauled ten bushels of maize back to the Mayflower, carrying much of the booty in a big metal kettle the men had also stolen. Did you not notice the Dispute Resolution Agreement? There was no schedule before then. Pursuant to the agreement, the roof of the Casino (the portion to remain) is to be replaced by 9/2007. There are also other things (CH, 5th Ave pavillion) that must be done by that date. As for the Casino, then I beleive either by that date or perhaps later, the plans and schedule for the FULL restoration has to be set, which will be done in conjunction with the City. The initial improvements (Sep/2007) were pegged at $6M+ and Partners laid down 25% in escrow. They have to lay down 25% of whatever the costs are for the later improvements. Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Re: Semi Pro Basketball in Asbury park?
I completely agree with the comment that Roller Derby would fit in with Asbury Park becasue it is funky. I think that is exactly the kind of thing that AP should be looking for. While I have never been to a match, I sure would try it. Back to basketball, it seems like several teams in the past once thought Convention Hall would be a good home court. The only think missing then was a renovation and people. I am hoping both are going to be here very soon. I hope some of the team owners are watching and still interested... --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, "Hinge" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > With all due respect, I have to disagree with "been there, done that" > Roller Derby has made a comeback big time. > Go to the Gotham Girls website and you'll notice that all of their > events are sold out. You know what else would be cool in an undergroud sorta way? Have Roller Derby in Convention Hall. People might think it's a crazy idea, but head up to Brooklyn and it's a thriving thing. AP could probably even have it's own Roller Derby team, and our town is full of enough hipsters and rock and roll people to ensure a good turnout. How about combining music with Roller Derby? Do a google search on Roller Derby and check out how many teams travel our country. [AsburyPark] Re: Casino Renovation
Nice post. I completely agree about preserving the musical legacy that put Asbury on the map. Cities like Austin TX get a huge chunk of change every year because of their SXSW festival. It seems to be a no brainer to do the same sort of thing right here in AP. Bring back the concerts on the beach that brought 10,000 people. The Paramount is a great place to see a concert, and it's very underused for that purpose. Same thing goes for Convention Hall. Speaking of which, I saw a program on the FUSE channel about a major metal concert at Convention Hall this summer, and the backstage tour was depressing. All the walls were painted in the same ugly colors as the boardwalk, but under the flourescent lights, it looked more like a mental ward then a backstage. Oh, and as for the hookers, it seems like they've pretty much gone away. On the block where I live, there were everywhere, but it's been awhile since i've seen them lurking around. Maybe they only come out in the warmer weather. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > > Dear Friends of Asbury: > > As far as the Casino goes, it's probably one of the last recognizable > Landmarks left in Asbury Park, and well worth saving. [AsburyPark] Re: Casino Renovation
Dear Friends of Asbury: As far as the Casino goes, it's probably one of the last recognizable Landmarks left in Asbury Park, and well worth saving. This past summer I have visited Asbury quite a few times, I went to the car show and even walked the Board Walk for the first time since 1973. Its the first time I actually felt safe to do so (more about that later). After reading 4th of July Asbury Park I drove down Springwood a part of Town I have never been before I was amazed that even after all these years there were still Vacant Lots from when the riots had taken Place. Don't get me wrong I'm in no way putting Asbury Park down, very much the opposite. I'm 45 years old, white grew up and continue to Live in Hoboken. I have many found memories of Asbury Park my family would rent a house in Ocean Grove (1966 to 1973) we would walk through the Casino on our way to the Board Walk, the Palace, the Carousel's. Just hearing that the walk way was open again, and you could walk over from OG actually brought the Idea of hope for Asbury to mind. I have visited Asbury Park on and off since about 1980 my Mother and I brought my God Son down to go on the Rides (the last of the kids in the Family to do so). The first thing I noticed the Boat rides were gone from Wesley Lake. A few years after that the rides were going, I'll never forget pulling up in front the Palace seeing it boarded up, the other Carousel gone from the Casino, a few years after that it was crumbling gated the failed Condo Complex gated crumbling. I as said before I grew up in Hoboken this was a rough Town like the Lower east side when I was Kid, and I wasn't getting out on my car. Each time I visited the Town got a little worse, even just 2 or 3 Years ago I went to Sandy Hook drove through Deal Allenhurst, they were Beautiful, when you swung around the Lake it was like Driving into Beirut I couldn't believe On a Beautiful Summer Day the only Person walking in Town was a Hooker it was Surreal like the Twilight Zone, we went over to Ocean Grove its was booming the Yuppies and New Yorkers had bought up the Town, (even tough I am not a fan of yuppies as they have bought up Hoboken as well), anything was better then what we came through. The thing I'm trying to get at is Asbury Park needs to build on it's History, its Music History. What I see going on is the Powers that be are trying to erase everything that Asbury once was even where the Palace once was they have realigned the streets to eradicate any trace it was there. While Eminent Domain may have it's place I believe the Supreme Court made a Supreme Injustice in allowing Private Property to be taken for Private use. Coming from a Condo Town it has not worked here in Hoboken and it wont work in Asbury either it just doesn't generate enough Taxes (I can't even afford to Live in the Town I grew up in). What will probably happen is you will get a Private Gated Community isolated from the rest of Town with Private Beaches, Just like Long Branch, we started going to the Beach at Long Branch a few Years ago, you could Park anywhere, while the Town wasn't much to brag about it was clean uncrowded ethnically diverse, now yuppie vile. I almost cried when I heard what had happened to the two Beautiful Carousel's that once spun within a few hundred feet of each other, now the People who snapped up the Carousel Horses will probably snap up all the property in Asbury Park and slowly force the People who have Lived and Visited for Years out, I hope before it;s all set in stone the Powers that be realize before it's to Late and re-evaluate the course they have laid out for Asbury, like the Carousel's once there gone there gone for good. [AsburyPark] Re: Metropolitan Hotel. What is to become of it?
You ain't kidding. I also have done photo and video shoots at Marlboro Psych Hospital, as well as inside the Casino building, back before it was sealed up. Marlboro was very bizarre. A few weeks before, the Marines had done a training exercise there, and there were bullet holes and spent shell casings everywhere. The caretaker took us everywhere, from the morgue, to the basement, the jail...everything. Very strange indeed. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, "justifiedright" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, "Hinge" wrote: > > > > Thanks much. > > I have a love of photos of abandoned places. > > Jack > > Well you've certainly come to the right place. > Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Some Ideas For AP - Casino = Ice Rink etc
ICE GOING, B'KLYN By RICH CALDER November 10, 2006 -- The Knicks just beat the Nets to Brooklyn. Madison Square Garden announced yesterday that it has expanded its empire into Brooklyn by partnering with the borough's answer to Chelsea Piers: the new Aviator Sports and Recreation complex at historic Floyd Bennett Field in Mill Basin. The slam-dunk deal means past and present Knicks, Rangers and WNBA Liberty players will regularly show up at the sports megaplex off Flatbush Avenue to host clinics and other events years before the anticipated 2009 move to Brooklyn of the New Jersey Nets. Some, like Hall-of-Fame Ranger Rod Gilbert and ex-Knick guard John Starks, were on hand yesterday to mark the occasion. "Madison Square Garden may reside in Manhattan, but we have always appreciated that a tremendous percentage of our fan base lives in Brooklyn and Queens," said MSG President Steve Mills, during a press conference announcing the deal. Gilbert, 1994 Stanley Cup Ranger Adam Graves and current Ranger Jed Ortmeyer later led members of the Xaverian HS hockey team in shooting and skating drills. Starks, known best for "The Dunk," when he slammed one home over Michael Jordan in the 1993 Eastern Conference Finals, called the 25 acres of top-of-the-line indoor and outdoor recreation space at Aviator "incredible" and said he was "overwhelmed by the richness of its history." Aviator's 170,000 square feet of indoor space was created through the combining of four airplane hangars into one structure with the historic façades kept intact. Floyd Bennett Field is the site of New York's first municipal airport, from which aviation pioneers like Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart once flew. The $38 million, 25-acre complex includes two regulation-size ice rinks, hardwood courts for basketball and volleyball, a gymnastics/dance-training center and two outdoor soccer/football/lacrosse fields. The site also includes a sports bar and a yet-to-open "Best of Brooklyn" food court, where patrons will be able taste famous borough treats like Junior's Cheesecake and Grimaldi's pizza. By the end of this month, the public will also have access to a state-of-the-art fitness center for members, a child-care center and 1,600 square feet of retail space. Yahoo! [AsburyPark] More Units - Less Time - Partners = 4 years & counting
NEW WAVE OF ROCKAWAYS By STEPHANIE GASKELL November 10, 2006 -- The Rockaways are making a comeback. The city is adding nearly 4,000 units of middle-income housing, a YMCA, a Super Stop & Shop grocery store, more than 500,000 square feet of retail space and a new public school, Mayor Bloomberg announced yesterday. It's all part of a $1.5 billion public-private partnership to help revitalize the area from Beach 32nd to Beach 81st streets, which has been in decline since the 1950s. Officials hope to complete the entire project - two developments called Arverne by the Sea and Arvene East - in the next five to seven years. Bloomberg also said new YMCAs are being planned for Brooklyn, in Bedford-Stuyvesant and Coney Island. Yahoo! Ha, ha, good doggy. I hear you. But listen, it is already an extraordinary building built by extraordinary architects (I know you'll say one of their lesser works). BTW, While it is still a little late, I welcome the restoration of the Casino. That has been my pet peeve. However, this first round is supposed to be just the roof. [AsburyPark] CM Pallone and Asbury Park
In response to Mr. DeSeno’s comment about CM Pallone: <> Yes. I stood with him during the dedication of The Center in October. He spent about an hour at The Center, toured the building, spoke with citizens, etc. On that day let me know that he is willing and wanting to discuss issues dealing with Asbury Park and told me to call him and make an appointment to do so. Also, on October 17th he and I were to meet with the principals of the Metro Homes project to discuss the union/local workforce issues. Metro cancelled the meeting at the last minute. I plan to request a new date from them soon. I also plan to arrange a meeting with CM Pallone in the coming weeks to discuss getting federal help for Asbury Park’s recreation, police, workforce development and economic revitalization efforts. I certainly welcome additional suggestions for discussion from constituents. I hope this finds everyone enjoying this beautiful day. Peace, JWK Councilman James W. Re: [AsburyPark] Semi Pro Basketball in Asbury park?
Here's another former Asbury team. http://www.jerseyshoregourmet.com/miscellaneous/Asbury/Move_Squires.htm Skip Bernstein[EMAIL PROTECTED]http://adogsbreakfast.com - Original Message - From: arhythmick To: AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com Sent: Friday, November 10, 2006 11:45 AM Subject: [AsburyPark] Semi Pro Basketball in Asbury park? I stumbled upon the fact that there used to be a semi-pro basketball team by the name of the Jersey Shorecats of the USBL who played their home games at Convention Hall. It seems they disbanded around 2001 and part of the reason a new owner didn't step up was because of the state of the Convention Hall facility (no locker rooms for one thing). Does anyone have any info on this team? Does anyone think it would be fun to try to get a new team to play here? I am attaching the article here...The Asbury Park-based New Jersey ShoreCats professional basketball franchise has suspended operations and will not field a team this season, president and part-owner Spiro Michals said yesterday. Michals and his father, George, majority owners of the team, said they want to get out of the day-to-day basketball business to concentrate on other family ventures and have been trying to sell the team for several months. Spiro Michals said several groups expressed interest in buying the 3-year-old United States Basketball League franchise, but a deal couldn't be worked out before the USBL season begins in late April."We do have someone interested in buying the franchise. The problem that was hanging us up was convincing them to stay in Asbury," he said. "They're still interested in buying the franchise and I think they're interested in bringing it back here, but I'm not sure." Spiro Michals said his family would be willing to remain as part-owners if they were not required to run the team. The ShoreCats played approximately 15 games a year at Asbury Park Convention Hall. Several prospective buyers were disappointed that Convention Hall has no locker rooms or shower facilities. Since the team's inception, the city and ShoreCats had discussed sharing the cost of upgrading the facility by adding showers and locker rooms, but never reached an agreement. The ShoreCats were considered one of the most stable and successful franchises in the 16-year-old USBL, which plays from late April to early July. Attendance has been steadily shrinking, however, since the team averaged about 2,000 fans per game in its debut season in 1998, with NBA Hall of Famer Rick Barry as coach. When Barry left to coach another USBL team last season, the ShoreCats averaged fewer than 1,000 fans despite posting a franchise-best 20-12 record. According to Spiro Michals, the team hovered around profitability despite the reduced attendance.Jersey ShoreCats basketball franchise to disband Former Shorecats coach NBA Hall of Famer Rick BarryBut when he compared the small return on investment with the amount of time and effort required to keep the team at or near profitability, Michals said, he couldn't justify keeping the ShoreCats when similar efforts in the family's other businesses -- which include publishing, online and other ventures -- bring much better returns."I loved hanging around with the players and the coaches and all the hype with Rick Barry was great," Michals said. 'It's just unfortunate that to have those two months of great times, you work your tail off for 10 months just to get to a small measure of profitability. I'm not sorry we tried. The team still has a strong sponsor base even today. I got a ton of calls this year from people looking for tickets and group things. "Unfortunately, we just don't have the time and energy to put into running the team." Mike Sweet, general manager of the USBL's Pennsylvania ValleyDawgs and the former ShoreCats director of scouting, said the league hopes the ShoreCats will be back next year."It's disappointing to the league, because we did feel it was a very good franchise -- from Day 1, when it opened, up to last year," he said. [AsburyPark] Re: Metropolitan Hotel. What is to become of it?
Thanks! If I succeed in my mission to get inside myself, i'll post the photos here. About 3 weeks ago, I noticed something weird on the south side of the Metropolitan. One of the rooms on the second floor had lights on, and looking up I could see a table and a painting on the wall. It looked like somebody was either staying there that night, or using the room as an office. Very eerie sight to see just the one room lit up like that. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, charlie leonard <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > hinge - go to google and search google images for asbury park inside > metropolitan hotel. it comes up wth a few pictures. nothing too detailed, but theres 2 inside i think! > charlie > > > - > Everyone is raving about the all-new Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Re: City Gives Away Triangle - Developer to Build Luxury Units on Site
The purpose of the "meandering" boardwalk is simple - to alter the wording of the agreement. If not in the current agreement or one of cafra permits, this goes back some time, the "line of the boardwalk" if continued straight, is the LINE determining east/west. Shove the boardwalk towards the ocean and you now have more land "west" of the boards to build on. Simple. How do you think the created billions in NYC in Batttery Park City? Fill. Watch, they will close off Ocean Ave over there as well. Look at it, it serves no purpose. Now, add that "little" worthless section of Ocean Ave, and those 10 or 18 houses becomes a great site for condos or 36 houses. Then the "triangle" is no more, now part of the entire section. Each lot worth $1.5-$4m, based Long Branch/deal/Locah arbor values. (ocean front in deal/allenhurst etc - like mastercard - priceless). As for the palace up for $2.5m - in reality, it NEVER was really for sale, regardless of you might think. Why would they sell that site, even then, for that price?? It didn't dit the plan, was an eyesore (to many). And here again, you take the palace site, rearrange the streets, and you now have the site site for a possible hotel site, retail etc. - on the Ocean and Lake. All planned. If they didn't plan it, then stupid. Yahoo! I guess I'll have to fvk with symbols from now on. Allan? Rat, as in "sneaky informant," works, but small-minded and petty stooge is closer to the mark. When you can't win on the ideas front, go the route of get-even. Amazes me how some can be offended by some good old Anglo-Saxon words (even dubya gets away with them) but not by slander, malice, or incompetence which really hurt people. Same people, I guess, who think private acts among consenting adults and stained blue dresses are worse than the plots to expose those things for political gain. Maybe TOS should include "truthiness" and fact manipulation in the list of offenses.
