[AsburyPark] Re: Trouble Across the Tracks - from a 1970 article

2006-11-16 Thread 2fine4u
If you believe what you've just posted, you're living in a fantasy
world. Asbury has just had 3 shootings, the last resulting in the
death of a teen-aged boy, who wasn't involved in the gangs, who by
Black estimates, was well liked, well known to HIS community, but
wasn't protected, as he walked down the street, to be shot down in
cold blood, only to have this discourse occurring over who should and
shouldn't, speak about the problems of urban life, in a twon that is 1
sq. mile, that is more Black now, than white. What a mind-set, the
powers that be have, to only think of their bottom line, which 10
years ago, wasn't here. Say what you will, but life for Black youths
is cheap, here. If all, any of you think, that the occurrance of a
young, black child, being shot to death, is "bad for business and
redevelopment", like a blip on the radar, I will leave this up-South,
racist town, tomorrow! You're no better than the murderers, of Emmett
Till, Martin Luther King, Jr., or Malcolm X! Let all of the Blacks
leave and see if you get Abbott Funds, Block Grants, etc. This town
is run off the backs of Blacks, who get nothing, but the federal funds
keep rolling in, huh?

If there were no redevelopment we wouldn't be talking. But there is
redevelopment and that's the point. I said it last year and I'll say
it again. More development has taken place under a free market, with
developers negotiating to assemble parcels, than has under eminent
domain with property owners having a gun to their heads. I deal with
that every day. I just got off two phone calls dealing with that
talking about hundreds of millions of dollars. AP wasn't developed
beforehand because it was tied up in litigation. Get that through
your head. You have gold here. God isn't making any more coastline
these days, although if global warming continues I may have
beachfront property soon. Don't listen to me though, I'm only paid
for my real estate advice. I just off the phone with NYT giving
advice and another with attorneys for property owners who want to
pay me annual retainers to do nothing but be available to them to
give advice. What do I know?

The whole town is. I constantly call the police when I see them walk
by. I have been at Rita's many times and have never seen here
encourage anyone who looks criminal to hangout in her place or in
front of her store. In fact I have seen Rita confront people who
look like troublemakers. She's a great lady. It's sad to see her get
such a raw deal. People have put their blood and sweat into places
over the years and can't even get what the market would bear. If she
and others were not facing condemnation she could get a very pretty
price and it wouldn't hurt you, me or anyone else in this town. It
wouldn;t stop one bit of development and the only person who would
get less is Fishman - someone who has NOT fulfilled his end of the
bargain. Don't start me again.

[AsburyPark] The Thursday Brown report

2006-11-16 Thread jerseykev
Greetings:

Tonight's "episode" will be interesting and available at
_www.asburyparknj.com_ (http://www.asburyparknj.com) . The fresh program
should be online no
later than 6 p.m.

In response to a number of email we have received I have added an
international segment, revitalized the Red Bank segment. Of course the Asbury
Segment
got the most email comments, most mentioned a concern about me only talking
about Councilman Keady, so I am doing a critque of The Radio Gal tonight in
the asbury portion.

Most likely she will slap me the next time she runs into me.

I had a guest technical director today, who exchanged their volunteer
service for some of my technology skills.

The program will be on demand at _www.electricnews.com_
(http://www.electricnews.com) as well.

Feel free to send email comments to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Well that is different and I am glad you clarified that because it
sounded as like their was seniority issue at play. I'm glad that we
understand each other.

I only grumble about one thing - the redevelopment and the majority
on the council's inability/unwillingness to make Partners fulfill
its obligations.

yes...are

I appreciate your perspective and I think I have responded to that
many times. Under any circumstances, things could always be better.
However, because things are somewhat better now, should not be a
reason to not demand that promises made be kept. I am very aware
that things are "relatively" better than they were. However, the
longer someone has been here the more they should want (and possibly
deserve) that these promises be kept. Don't settle for less. As a
long-time resident you deserve it. Four years is just too long to
have not started the restoration. It will not be finished for a
number of years if at all. There is no reason why the whole thing
(waterfront restoration) could not have been completed within 5-6
years at the most. Real developers would have done it in less. The
council really feels the same way, but won;t say it publicly,
although it did say it somewhat last December. Partners doesn;t have
what it takes. Believe me. If it did we would be well on our way
already. The council's job is to make sure it gets done and it
hasn't. It has not prodded Partners. Sorry, but they have to get my
complaints then. The same thing goes for the Triangle and C-8. You
just can't operate that way. At least Aaron has been marginalized -
that the council finally saw. I would be very happy to shut up if
they just came through. Eventually somebody hears, so yes, the
complaints do do some good. At least I'll try.

I don't have the facts on this and I have not said the groups the
other night were justified. I simply said that whether justified or
not it is a fact that they are angry and that much, if not all of
it, was precipitated by the unjustified attacks on Keady.

I don't know Rev Nunn. I have seen him and I have read an article by
him in the APP that I am not to fond of because I think it has
strains of anti-semitism in it (you can google it for yourself). I
will reserve my opinion until I see more, but I am watching.

I have no problem with your (or Tom's) posting. I have a problem
with lies and distortion. You are free to disagree with me all you
want but I draw the line at lies and distortion and that goes mainly
to Tom.

Also, I think Leslie and Jim should be cut a little slack even if
you disagree with what they say or do or if your vision for AP
differs from theirs. No one should be lied about and they are very
decent people. It is just not right. Everyone deserves a fair shot,
and that includes those I criticize too such as Fishman and Bruno.

Right, there won't be an East Side vs. West Side.

It will only be the "southwest side". And guess what. There's an
excellent opportunity to build it up. From Springwood Ave North to
Asbury Ave.

Take a look at Belmar and their "redevelopment" plan for main street.
If ever a town DID not need one. Take that to Main Street AP and rework
from the post office north. You could, in concept, rework every block

There will alway be an Eastside- Westside everywhere. Take a poll of
the reidents who REALLY live there and they will disagree. You know
what's going to happen when the Westside gets builded up new people
are going to move in values will go up and resident will move. Then
you get blames for forcing residents out and making it a white town.
It's a balancing act.

I also don't think it's as bad as it was in the 70's
The sad fact is that racism still exists in our society, and sadly it's very
much at play in
Asbury Park.
Even in my regular life, it blows my mind that racism comes from the people you
least
expect.
I've heard people casually make a racist comment if front of a group of people,
as if the
commenter thinks it's ok, and that the people in the group agree. That just
plain makes me
sick. I've actually lost friends over this kind of thing.
It sure would be great for both Asbury and society as well if things could be
done to lessen
the racism in our world.

What was the lie about Joe D? When you were posting your inside info
on the Dispute Resolution Agreement before it came out Joe D was
emailing me privately telling me you were wrong. You were posting in
opposition to the info I was posting, which came from Joe D
directly. That's how he got it out without putting his name to it.
May he rest in peace, I liked Joe.

I don't want you or Tom to leave. Tom said he left because he was a
lighting rod. That's okay as long as what you say is the truth. We
have differences of opinion, but as Tom likes to say, you are not
entitled to your own set of facts, neither am I.

i for one am glad that it has been slow going, this way you have a
better chance of getting it right...i think what we are going to get,

am looking at the fact that there is a new boardwalk, new shops on it,
life down there now...the beaches in asbury had the best year in over
20 years this year (did you go to the guitarbque this past summer)...

with new roads and sidewalks, this place is going to look amazing by
next summer...will it be done? no...dan you have proven over and over
that you were nowhere near asbury park 10 years ago..i cant wait till
they roll right over that piece of shit cockroach hooker-attraction

[AsburyPark] Trouble Across the Tracks - from a 1970 article

2006-11-16 Thread oakdorf
Ok - so I read the following article 10 times. How has really changed
in 36 years?

To the thousands who flock each summer weekend to its white sand
beaches and boardwalk carnival rides, Asbury Park, N.J., seems a
tidy, if somewhat faded haven of tranquillity. But it is also, like
many American small towns, a community where "across the tracks"
still has a vivid, invidious meaning. To the east of the Penn Central
railroad line, where well-kept lawns sweep toward the Atlantic Ocean,
live most of Asbury Park's 12,500 whites. On the West Side, in a
ghetto of frame houses splaying out from Springwood Avenue, live most
of Asbury Park's 8,500 blacks. Last week the tranquillity was
shattered by four nights of black riots that began on the West Side
but spilled briefly across the tracks to white Asbury Park as well.
The toll was 190 injured, 174 arrested and some $4,000,000 in damages
to stores and residences.

The trouble began with rock and bottle throwing following an
Independence Day dance on the West Side. For two days the window-
smashing, fire-bombing and looting were confined to the black
neighborhood, leaving it without power and short on food, and turning
much of Springwood Avenue into a smoldering ruin. Though the town has
a white mayor and a black police chief, efforts to negotiate a truce
failed. Angry black teen-agers then led a charge across the Penn
Central tracks into the fringe of the white business district. The
litany of their grievances was reproachfully familiar: too little
urban renewal, too few jobs, inadequate play areas, inadequate
communication between black and white leaders. When the unemployed of
Asbury Park look to the local welfare officer for help, they find her
in the telephone directory under the listing Overseer of the Poor.

Giving a hard, immediate edge to the battle was the behavior of many
of the 200-odd New Jersey state troopers called in to quell the
rioting, a job some executed with zeal. Ninety-two blacks were
wounded by police shotguns and pellet guns. But Asbury Park's black
residents had smashed the town's complacency. After two days of
rioting, but before the white district had been hit, Mayor Joseph F.
Mattice had said: "We're very fortunate it occurred where it did. It
didn't affect our business area."

I support the truth and defended Keady because what was being said
simply wasn't true. As for me not living here full time - tough.
Even if I did not pay taxes, I still have a right to say something.
And considering that I pay almost $10K a year in taxes, I'll

That was my initial guess but you set me straight on that a while
back. It doesn't really though. It is just that little weight can be
given to posts from the shadows.

You are too partial to acknowledge the fact that someone was lied
about. That's your problem. I can't see why groups would want to be
divisive in this town.

Debbie

With regard to Jimmy Bruno's parents, I don't think anyone said
anything against them, nor should they - be they dead or alive. I
certainly did not and in fact, expressed my condolences about his
mother's passing privately to him when I first learned of it. I think
someone brought up that Jimmy's father was a legend here and it was
done in a positive manner. I only responded that what he or his father
have done gives him no special privileges above anyone else in this
town.

Hinge, I did notice that and thought of you. "Hinge Hill". I think they
plan on keeping that there through the winter, and charge $10 for all
day snowboarding and all you can eat Art's "natural" ices.

Then I got into a dicussion on whehter or not the pony would be "moved"
or not. With the land worth $8-17m, based on what can be built there.

Note the apology was for tone not content. Still no word on the official Blood
count, exactly how the 200 number was created or the total gang count for the
city.

UEZ chair apologizes to Asbury official
Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 11/16/06
ASBURY PARK: Albert Giobbie, chairman of the city Urban Enterprise Zone
Board, has apologized to City Councilman James Keady "for the
unnecessarily harsh tone" of certain sections of a letter sent to Keady
for making what they called "irresponsible" comments to the media after
the Oct. 18 murder of Tylik Pugh.

Giobbie had told Keady to resign and leave the city. Keady met with the
board Nov. 8.

"I certainly accepted their apology," Keady said.

2006-11-16 Thread Debbie DeLisa

I agree.  I joined this group less than 2 weeks ago and I have not read one post which encourages all of us to work together for the good of this city.  Of course we all have different views and beliefs but the vicious and degrading remarks which are being made are not only cruel but embarrassing.  I stood up at the council meeting and personally apologized to the Keady's for the humiliating letter the UEZ wrote because I think in his heart Jim Keady is doing what he thinks is best for the city  .He has many people in town who look up to him and he has proven himself to be a hard working, caring individual.  On the other hand I think it is a disgrace that any of you are involving Jimmy Bruno's parents in your tirades.  I lost my father this year on December 26 which was the saddest day of my life
but I am proud of the legacy he left behind and I work close to 20 hours a day to follow his work ethics and  be a success in life.
I have known Jimmy Bruno since he was a young boy and I also am proud to say I knew both of his parents and I know that they  instilled strong work ethics in him.  Jimmy also lost his mother this year and by the amount of people at her funeral  you know she was a very special woman  who did so much for this community.  Jimmy has devoted most of his adult life to serving this city and I think he has carried on his parents legacy through hard work and dedication to Asbury Park.

Come on Allan. Tom could make a very positive impact on this
discussion if he chose to. He has the ability to bring a different
perspective than many others who "reside" here. On occassion I even
agree with his perspective - usually the few times he has chosen to
speak fact rather than distort it.

The reality is he has chosen to villify people and their ideas, most
notably and recently Jim Keady, based on half truths and outright
distortions. The fact that I am defending JK, when I really
disagree with just about everything he does and think he is also a
divisive force, should be an illustration of just how ridiculously
nasty and dishonest Tommy has been through out all of this. There
is plenty of fact to discuss. To the point made below, becoming as
vile and mean-spiritied in a town of this size has no place. It is
as if Tommy believes that posting on this board is different than
saying things to someone's face. It isn't.

Please let's get back to a healthy discussion of issues, both here
and in general.

To Tommy - please stop the blatant distortions and make the good
points you have in a way that is both constructive and credible.
Many would listen but have stopped.

To Jim - please stop the grandstanding and recommit yourself to
bringing together differing parts of this town to everyone's mutual
benefit. You are actually at a fundamental crossroads - to make a
difference for this town by stepping back and bringing people
together to meet in a place that works for everyone without leaning
to heavily toward anyone or to polarize and grandstand to build your
following at the expense in the end of those you claim to represent
and those you don't. The choice is yours alone.

I'll agree with you partially, but he is definitely the catylyst for much of
the negativity that
has dominated this board.
I don't think it's really going to be possible to find the true number of gang
members in
AP. Even giving away the source of such info might be risky, and it might
expose
somebody who is working undercover, or some other informant.
I honestly don't think that focusing on that number really means anything. The
bigger
picture is the gangs, and violence and crime, which in my opinion is the #1
problem that
our city faces.

2006-11-16 Thread Allan Peterson
I disagree that the Tom is to blame. One issue is when someone does not share
the same opinion as those who monopolize the board. I have raised questions
about the 200 Blood count, the plan for obtaining tourism and items reported on
Asbury radio. These three examples have gone unanswered. Rather than people
asking for the questions they jump on things like the Casino is not rebuilt.
Yes we all want the buildings to sparkle but there are many issues. Tom has
supplied many answers and raised good questions. Placing blame solely on him
is incorrect.

Tell you what. I'll show I'm the bigger person. I hereby retract all
of my statements about Bruno including that he is a vicious little
prick. I am sure he earned every position he ever had. I never said
anything about him not devoting time to this City or his love for
it. I will go even further than that - I am convinced Jimmy Bruno
loves this City and wants to see it improve. I also admit that Bruno
has given a lot of his life for this city.

That was never my isse. What I won't retract, and what is a fact, is
that the waterfront restoration has not taken place. It hasn't even
started. Bruno, Kevin and Loffredo have been unwilling or unable to
make Partners fulfill its obligations on the waterfront. I don't
claim any special knowledge of why that is so, I only know it is so.
I NEVER claimed to know or alleged corruption or anything
inappropriate. But Bruno, Sanders and Loffredo were elected (twice)
in a large part to get the waterfront restored. They still haven't
been able to do it after four years. That's a fact.

I don't want to be remembered. I don't want anyone to know me. I am
willing to have not only the restored Casino, CH and pavillions
named after Bruno, I would be willing to call the place Brunoville
Park. All I want is for Bruno and his buddies to make Partners
restore the waterfront as promised. That's it, that's all. If you
are as established here as long as you claim to be (whoever you
are), you know damn well the Weldon connection. If you don't you've
had your head up your ass for decades. In the end, who cares? I'll
let Weldon go free. Just BUILD the f-ing waterfront as promised.

[AsburyPark] Re: DeSeno - Clearing up the facts

2006-11-16 Thread kretzu
Tom DeSeno - I don't think you were at the last City Council meeting,
so here is info that you don't have, which wasn't reported by the
Press. Jim Keady proposed that $100,000 be earmarked, set aside in
an escrow account, from the Community Development Fund. Following
that, the community could come forth with proposals for programming
or for infrastructure, and the Council would determine which
proposals had merit and should be pursued. He had brought this up to
the Mayor at an earlier date. In the Press article, Mayor Sanders
argues that Jim Keady doesn't know anyone at the West Side, and Nancy
Shields didn't ask Jim for a comment. Jim has been involved at the
West Side for at least a good year and a half. He has gone to
meetings there, has had extensive conversations with the former
Executive Director, director of fundraising and others.
Unfortunately, the whole story is rarely told in the papers.

On a side note - as Jim Keady's wife, I have to tell you that the
amount of anger and viciousness on this board at the hand of Tom
DeSeno and Fred (who I strongly suspect is Deputy Mayor Jim Bruno)
has had a significant negative impact on me personally. I wrote a
personal e-mail to Tom about this, but it doesn't appear to have made
a difference. Criticizing an elected official's policies is good and
everyone has a right and duty to do that. But Tom has been lying
about the facts in order to turn public opinion against an elected
official in a place that he doesn't even call home.

This shouldn't be the Rush Limbaugh show. Asbury Park is 1 square
mile and more or less, we all know each other. I know the colleges
that Jim Bruno's daughter was looking at last year. And Jim and I
went to see Tom DeSeno's kids in Scrooged last Christmas. So when,
on this board, you get nasty and lie or manipulate the facts, it's
personal and it's deeply, deeply hurtful.

Congrats to Paul Vail, all the hard efforts from others and to most of the
Counsil members for having this issue reviewed again. If there was not an
issue with the application from Market Street, chances are this would have
passed and built. But these people listed above wanted better for Asbury and
brought this matter forward. Without grandstanding, these people will make a

Who approved his payout? Terry Weldon. I didn't say he didn't pass any
