Best read today is Frank D'Alessandro's letter to the editor in today's Coaster. There was an awful stench coming from the latest pile of triCity News; so I passed it by. Maybe they'll have themselves fumigated before the next issue is due out in two weeks.

[AsburyPark] Re: Trouble Across the Tracks - from a 1970 article
If you believe what you've just posted, you're living in a fantasy world. Asbury has just had 3 shootings, the last resulting in the death of a teen-aged boy, who wasn't involved in the gangs, who by Black estimates, was well liked, well known to HIS community, but wasn't protected, as he walked down the street, to be shot down in cold blood, only to have this discourse occurring over who should and shouldn't, speak about the problems of urban life, in a twon that is 1 sq. mile, that is more Black now, than white. What a mind-set, the powers that be have, to only think of their bottom line, which 10 years ago, wasn't here. Say what you will, but life for Black youths is cheap, here. If all, any of you think, that the occurrance of a young, black child, being shot to death, is "bad for business and redevelopment", like a blip on the radar, I will leave this up-South, racist town, tomorrow! You're no better than the murderers, of Emmett Till, Martin Luther King, Jr., or Malcolm X! Let all of the Blacks leave and see if you get Abbott Funds, Block Grants, etc. This town is run off the backs of Blacks, who get nothing, but the federal funds keep rolling in, huh? --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, "Fred" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, "oakdorf" wrote: > > > > > > > > > There will alway be an Eastside- Westside everywhere. [AsburyPark] The Thursday Brown report
Greetings: Tonight's "episode" will be interesting and available at _www.asburyparknj.com_ (http://www.asburyparknj.com) . The fresh program should be online no later than 6 p.m. In response to a number of email we have received I have added an international segment, revitalized the Red Bank segment. Of course the Asbury Segment got the most email comments, most mentioned a concern about me only talking about Councilman Keady, so I am doing a critque of The Radio Gal tonight in the asbury portion. Most likely she will slap me the next time she runs into me. I had a guest technical director today, who exchanged their volunteer service for some of my technology skills. The program will be on demand at _www.electricnews.com_ (http://www.electricnews.com) as well. Feel free to send email comments to [EMAIL PROTECTED] (mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]) KEVIN BROWN THE BROWN REPORT

However, the longer someone has been here the more they should want (and possibly deserve) that these promises be kept. Don't settle for less. As a long-time resident you deserve it. Four years is just too long to have not started the restoration. It will not be finished for a number of years if at all. There is no reason why the whole thing (waterfront restoration) could not have been completed within 5-6 years at the most. Real developers would have done it in less. The council really feels the same way, but won;t say it publicly, although it did say it somewhat last December. Partners doesn;t have what it takes. Believe me. Right, there won't be an East Side vs. West Side. It will only be the "southwest side". And guess what. There's an excellent opportunity to build it up. no the hooker deli has kept asbury down for a long time... my point was that you were not here to see what asbury looked like 10 years ago...i am very happy that you keep your property nice, if everyone took pride in that also, asbury would be a much better place...pride is important...do you think that your constant grumbling about the council and the partners really helps? take it it from someone who has been around, could things be better? yes...are they much better than they were 5 years ago? I also don't think it's as bad as it was in the 70's The sad fact is that racism still exists in our society, and sadly it's very much at play in Asbury Park. Even in my regular life, it blows my mind that racism comes from the people you least expect. I've heard people casually make a racist comment if front of a group of people, as if the commenter thinks it's ok, and that the people in the group agree. That just plain makes me sick. I've actually lost friends over this kind of thing. It sure would be great for both Asbury and society as well if things could be done to lessen the racism in our world. [AsburyPark] Trouble Across the Tracks - from a 1970 article
Ok - so I read the following article 10 times. How has really changed in 36 years? To the thousands who flock each summer weekend to its white sand beaches and boardwalk carnival rides, Asbury Park, N.J., seems a tidy, if somewhat faded haven of tranquillity. But it is also, like many American small towns, a community where "across the tracks" still has a vivid, invidious meaning. To the east of the Penn Central railroad line, where well-kept lawns sweep toward the Atlantic Ocean, live most of Asbury Park's 12,500 whites. On the West Side, in a ghetto of frame houses splaying out from Springwood Avenue, live most of Asbury Park's 8,500 blacks. Last week the tranquillity was shattered by four nights of black riots that began on the West Side but spilled briefly across the tracks to white Asbury Park as well. The toll was 190 injured, 174 arrested and some $4,000,000 in damages to stores and residences. The trouble began with rock and bottle throwing following an Independence Day dance on the West Side. For two days the window- smashing, fire-bombing and looting were confined to the black neighborhood, leaving it without power and short on food, and turning much of Springwood Avenue into a smoldering ruin. Though the town has a white mayor and a black police chief, efforts to negotiate a truce failed. Angry black teen-agers then led a charge across the Penn Central tracks into the fringe of the white business district. The litany of their grievances was reproachfully familiar: too little urban renewal, too few jobs, inadequate play areas, inadequate communication between black and white leaders. When the unemployed of Asbury Park look to the local welfare officer for help, they find her in the telephone directory under the listing Overseer of the Poor. Giving a hard, immediate edge to the battle was the behavior of many of the 200-odd New Jersey state troopers called in to quell the rioting, a job some executed with zeal. Ninety-two blacks were wounded by police shotguns and pellet guns. But Asbury Park's black residents had smashed the town's complacency. After two days of rioting, but before the white district had been hit, Mayor Joseph F. Mattice had said: "We're very fortunate it occurred where it did. It didn't affect our business area." Yahoo! Debbie With regard to Jimmy Bruno's parents, I don't think anyone said anything against them, nor should they - be they dead or alive. I certainly did not and in fact, expressed my condolences about his mother's passing privately to him when I first learned of it. I think someone brought up that Jimmy's father was a legend here and it was done in a positive manner. I only responded that what he or his father have done gives him no special privileges above anyone else in this town. Yahoo! RE: [AsburyPark] Re: DeSeno - Clearing up the facts
I agree. I joined this group less than 2 weeks ago and I have not read one post which encourages all of us to work together for the good of this city. Of course we all have different views and beliefs but the vicious and degrading remarks which are being made are not only cruel but embarrassing. I stood up at the council meeting and personally apologized to the Keady's for the humiliating letter the UEZ wrote because I think in his heart Jim Keady is doing what he thinks is best for the city .He has many people in town who look up to him and he has proven himself to be a hard working, caring individual.  On the other hand I think it is a disgrace that any of you are involving Jimmy Bruno's parents in your tirades. I lost my father this year on December 26 which was the saddest day of my life but I am proud of the legacy he left behind and I work close to 20 hours a day to follow his work ethics and be a success in life.  I have known Jimmy Bruno since he was a young boy and I also am proud to say I knew both of his parents and I know that they instilled strong work ethics in him. Jimmy also lost his mother this year and by the amount of people at her funeral you know she was a very special woman  who did so much for this community.  Jimmy has devoted most of his adult life to serving this city and I think he has carried on his parents legacy through hard work and dedication to Asbury Park. From: "Hinge" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>Reply-To: AsburyPark@yahoogroups.comTo: AsburyPark@yahoogroups.comSubject: [AsburyPark] Re: DeSeno - Clearing up the factsDate: Thu, 16 Nov 2006 16:56:20 - I think that the anger and viciousness that JK's wife is talking about is destroying this message board. Before Tommy came on board, this was a fun place to visit, but since then it's been about one thing, and one thing only. It's got to stop. And another thing, getting your information from the Asbury Park Press is a big mistake. Please stop this smear campaign. You know what would be great, if people start talking about Asbury as a whole again, and stop focusing on the just one issue. And Tommy, I think you should leave, before you do more damage to your credibility. You still have your website and the TCN to spread your opinions. On occassion I even agree with his perspective - usually the few times he has chosen to speak fact rather than distort it. The reality is he has chosen to villify people and their ideas, most notably and recently Jim Keady, based on half truths and outright distortions. The fact that I am defending JK, when I really disagree with just about everything he does and think he is also a divisive force, should be an illustration of just how ridiculously nasty and dishonest Tommy has been through out all of this. There is plenty of fact to discuss. To the point made below, becoming as vile and mean-spiritied in a town of this size has no place. It is as if Tommy believes that posting on this board is different than saying things to someone's face. It isn't. Please let's get back to a healthy discussion of issues, both here and in general. To Tommy - please stop the blatant distortions and make the good points you have in a way that is both constructive and credible. Many would listen but have stopped. To Jim - please stop the grandstanding and recommit yourself to bringing together differing parts of this town to everyone's mutual benefit. You are actually at a fundamental crossroads - to make a difference for this town by stepping back and bringing people together to meet in a place that works for everyone without leaning to heavily toward anyone or to polarize and grandstand to build your following at the expense in the end of those you claim to represent and those you don't. The choice is yours alone. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Allan Peterson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > I disagree that the Tom is to blame. [AsburyPark] Re: DeSeno - Clearing up the facts
I'll agree with you partially, but he is definitely the catylyst for much of the negativity that has dominated this board. I don't think it's really going to be possible to find the true number of gang members in AP. Even giving away the source of such info might be risky, and it might expose somebody who is working undercover, or some other informant. I honestly don't think that focusing on that number really means anything. The bigger picture is the gangs, and violence and crime, which in my opinion is the #1 problem that our city faces. [AsburyPark] Hip Hip Horrah!
UEZ chair apologizes to Asbury official Posted by the _Asbury Park Press_ (http://www.app.com/) on 11/16/06 ASBURY PARK: Albert Giobbie, chairman of the city Urban Enterprise Zone Board, has apologized to City Councilman James Keady "for the unnecessarily harsh tone" of certain sections of a letter sent to Keady for making what they called "irresponsible" comments to the media after the Oct. 18 murder of Tylik Pugh. Giobbie had told Keady to resign and leave the city. Keady met with the board Nov. 8. "I certainly accepted their apology," Keady said.

[AsburyPark] Re: DeSeno - Clearing up the facts
Tom DeSeno - I don't think you were at the last City Council meeting, so here is info that you don't have, which wasn't reported by the Press. Jim Keady proposed that $100,000 be earmarked, set aside in an escrow account, from the Community Development Fund. Following that, the community could come forth with proposals for programming or for infrastructure, and the Council would determine which proposals had merit and should be pursued. He had brought this up to the Mayor at an earlier date. In the Press article, Mayor Sanders argues that Jim Keady doesn't know anyone at the West Side, and Nancy Shields didn't ask Jim for a comment. Jim has been involved at the West Side for at least a good year and a half. He has gone to meetings there, has had extensive conversations with the former Executive Director, director of fundraising and others. Unfortunately, the whole story is rarely told in the papers. On a side note - as Jim Keady's wife, I have to tell you that the amount of anger and viciousness on this board at the hand of Tom DeSeno and Fred (who I strongly suspect is Deputy Mayor Jim Bruno) has had a significant negative impact on me personally. I wrote a personal e-mail to Tom about this, but it doesn't appear to have made a difference. Criticizing an elected official's policies is good and everyone has a right and duty to do that. But Tom has been lying about the facts in order to turn public opinion against an elected official in a place that he doesn't even call home. This shouldn't be the Rush Limbaugh show. Asbury Park is 1 square mile and more or less, we all know each other. I know the colleges that Jim Bruno's daughter was looking at last year. And Jim and I went to see Tom DeSeno's kids in Scrooged last Christmas. So when, on this board, you get nasty and lie or manipulate the facts, it's personal and it's deeply, deeply hurtful. [AsburyPark] UEZ Apologizes to Keady - Bruno's Next
UEZ chair apologizes to Asbury official Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 11/16/06 ASBURY PARK: Albert Giobbie, chairman of the city Urban Enterprise Zone Board, has apologized to City Councilman James Keady "for the unnecessarily harsh tone" of certain sections of a letter sent to Keady for making what they called "irresponsible" comments to the media after the Oct. 18 murder of Tylik Pugh. Giobbie had told Keady to resign and leave the city. Keady met with the board Nov. 8. "I certainly accepted their apology," Keady said. Yahoo! Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Stop the Market Street Mission!
Congrats to Paul Vail, all the hard efforts from others and to most of the Counsil members for having this issue reviewed again. If there was not an issue with the application from Market Street, chances are this would have passed and built. But these people listed above wanted better for Asbury and brought this matter forward.
