2007-10-01 Thread Kevin Brown
Boiling it all down I see it a simple chapter. The State is so askew
that it needs to take areas and increase density and throw out more
middle to lower middle income people to balance the droves of upper
middle and upper class people who left over the last 5 years.

As the government of New Jersey became so "google" in size it
required excessive taxing. So to keep the rich in the State they
have cut deals with people to gentrify areas that could be made
desireable like ocean front property.

For so many years Monmouth County was one of the top ranked counties
in America. Freehold, Long Branch & Asbury Park are marked for a
planned reversal of zoning revenue. Taxes will be quad what they
were 5 years ago, and those who benefitted by the gentrification (sp)
will be those that make the profits associated with the developments
and then those who get to live right where the slum was last year.

The politicians are fed by the campaign contributions and the
decisions are legislated towards those that fund the politicians.

It has nothing to do with Bruce, Asbury Radio, The Press, it's just a
drug known as "power" and the dealers of this habitual social desease
are Cherokee, Hovnian, Applied, Matzel Mumford. The unions, and the
municipalities and the school districts. New Jersey is sick, it
needs a miracle. Unfortunately I do not see it coming.

We are economically not viable, to think otherwise is to fool
yourself. No matter what you reveal on the air or in print or
online, if you think they are worried about what any of us have to
say, your fooling yourself.

The masses have been numbed, and they are not gonna wake up anytime
soon, because they can rent a U Haul and relocate elsewhere more
easily.

"Only the fool thinks they are important to the King, and they are
right, becasue they are the King's fool!"

For one, that will mean people like me will move out of Asbury Park and never
look back.
I have absolutely zero interest in patronizing Fishman and companies vision of
this city.
Music is literally my life. I grew up in the clubs of Asbury and Long Branch,
and from that
experience I created a career for myself that took me around the world. Once
during those
travels, I was in a city in Germany during a recent Worlds Fair, at which I was
working at
the European MTV music awards. I was wandering around the fair wearing my
Vaccaro
Guitars tee shirt, which proudly displays the name Asbury Park. A group of
European
women came up to me and asked about my shirt, then asked if I ever met Bruce (I
had) or
Bon Jovi (him too) and if they could buy my shirt. No kidding! Unfortunately
for them, I
didn't feel like walking around the Worlds Fair shirtless, so I declined.
That's an example of
the far reaching impact that Asbury Park once had.
By taking away the music venues that are the breeding grounds of so many great
musicians, AP Partners are destroying something beautiful...but they don't
care. Money is
their passion, not music and the people that make it.
I feel fortunate that I work at The Saint. At least our musical home isn't
threatened (yet)
but it truly saddens me that the opportunities for original music to flourish
are rapidly
disappearing.
So what will Asbury Park become? Less racially diverse, less interesting, less
vital. Will it
become The OC, Laguna Beach, The Hills? Pier Village?

See you in Paris Maureen :)

Wouldn't that be something if Springsteen's 'Radio Nowhere' was about
the jettisoning of Asbury Radio? When I listen to it I hear a lot of
potential veins, but I'm still not sure about how I feel about the
ones that were actually tapped.
Alas, the song seems to be more about the lack of musical
identity, than community radio, per se. We did play local musicians
though, so maybe...
I often did wonder if Bruce ever knew about Asbury Radio - we were
the only radio show about Asbury Park, after all. I used to make a
joke about the fact that I did turn down a Springsteen interview,
back in the early 70's, in favor of one with Robert Klein.
(Obviously, I was very young!) I invented this whole thing about how
Bruce wouldn't visit Asbury Radio because he was still punishing me.
Don't think anyone fell for that one.
I used to seriously worry that Bruce ignored us because he
thought the show, by examining the redevelopment process in depth,
was somehow undermining the quest of redevelopment. (With the
exception of the Esperanza's original name, "The Rising", can you
think of a time Bruce interferred in the plans?) This was because our
critics often grouped the show into the 'they're against
redevelopment' label. The idea was absurd. How could anyone be
opposed to redeveloping a barren, blighted landscape on its face?
However, the devil, as we know now,was in the details.
It's nearly a year since we were forced off the air and I wonder
if we could've even had a show if we were to have started today.
There's too much riding on the waterfront's success. How would
Cherokee Investments, with its $30 million in the kitty, (It is a 50%
partner in Asbury Partners) react?
There is almost a collective holding of breath out there right
now. The notion being that if anyone of us exhales the bubble may
deflate even more. One must smile continously and recite market comps
while doing so. We must all drink the Kool-Aid. The stakes are too
high not to.
I've always felt that Asbury was a strange little microcosm of
what's going on nationally. Have you noticed how the word 'politics'
has replaced 'communism' in our 'emphasis vernacular'? I swear sex
and politics are the two biggest taboos of this century. Sex is
imperative to human life and politics, well, Jesus Christ was
political, for...
So what does Bruce think of all this? I think we're all clear on
where he comes down about sex, actually. And, he's never really
choked on political issues regionally. But how does he react to the
closing of the WB? And the Pony, did someone say it's next?
Here's what I overheard about the closing of the WB: the powers
that be who have mucho buckoh's riding on the sale of these
waterfront condos want Bruce and his gritty following out of Asbury.
They want to change the image and the message, and attract people who
are sufficiently entwined in the system to afford to invest here.
You know the problem with that? You got it. We'd reduce AP to just
another overpriced bedroom community by the sea, thus killing the
goose that laid the egg that bore the glory days.
But maybe not. Maybe they are right. History, ambiguity, it's
messy. We like it clean these days. No gray - just black and white,
and lots of antiseptic.
Well, what does someone else think?

Here's my prediction. They'll try and re-open it as some kind of crap upscale
venue with a
velvet rope and large bouncers with earpieces. Sort of like the pretentious
place at Pier
Village. The rich folks need a place to play.
Larry Fishman sucks.

RE: [AsburyPark] Notes from this weekends visit and Thank you Wonderbar!

2007-10-01 Thread Debbie DeLisa

I have a lot of wonderful memories from this weekend, but I think the most touching was the flowers I received on Friday from the "Boardwalk Kitties" thanking me for being there for them.  I had no idea who they were from  until Glenn came in and asked me if I had gotten my flowers.  What a thoughtful gesture Glenn---You are a great person and we will  be looking forward to seeing you in December!

From: "dapawprint" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>Reply-To: AsburyPark@yahoogroups.comTo: AsburyPark@yahoogroups.comSubject: [AsburyPark] Notes from this weekends visit and Thank you Wonderbar!Date: Mon, 01 Oct 2007 00:45:57 -

I hope that you all had the chance to stop by the Wonderbar and wish Debbie and Lance well. The crowds were amazing, both last night and today. It's still going strong, if you haven't been there yet, act quickly! As usual, I walked miles and miles and miles taking pictures of the new, the old and the changing. Some things that I noted:- Yes, the Sunset Ave. pavilion is being cleaned out. There are several open holes in the second floor and two dumpsters full of memories on Ocean Ave.- Madison Marquette had painters in today spiffing up their offices on the Boardwalk.- A renovation of some sort is underway at the former Red Fusion restaurant.I walked the perimeter of Deal lake today. I had to wonder why the Asbury Park side of the lake was a pretty safe walk, but the sink holes on the Deal side were so
unattended? I made it back safe though!I met two gentlemen at Sunset and Ocean early this afternoon. They saw my camera and asked if I had captured any interesting pictures. I replied that I had been taking pictures of the geese on Sunset Lake. We got into a very nice conversation, I hope their remaining years are as enjoyable as possible. On my way back to The Empress, I stopped by The Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel (New Name) and approached the front desk. I politely asked if I could take a few pictures of their newly renovated lobby. The reply was less than polite. I was asked WHY I would want such a picture (my reply was "due to the renovation") and I was told that "No one is here to give you permission, and I am certain that it will be a problem." Then, I was asked to leave. I left.I was also here to get a few additional
pictures of the Metropolitan Hotel before it's demise. There is working electricity in the north, third floor! I saw a light shining in there. R.I.P. Metropolitan. If you go to get your own pictures, walk around the back. There is a portion of the "ceiling" that has collapsed and a shirt sleeve is dangling from the hole. Other "photographers" and I wondered if it had remains in it!I then stopped for lunch/dinner at Old Man Rafferty's. The renovation of that building is astounding. Expert care was taken in that effort. The staff is exceptionally friendly, the food is excellent. A very nice experience.Back to the Boardwalk... Although I agree that the work on the Casino seems slow, I did notice that a new tile roof is being actively assembled on the Heating Plant. I also saw a few changes in the Carousel building (since late
July) as well.Additionally, from my room at the Empress, I can see that some work has been done in the second floor of the First Avenue pavilion. The Empress is also doing work, I noticed that the A/C enclosures and the Hotel entrance (which were looking a bit shabby) are being replaced and cleaned up.I have immensely enjoyed my visits this year and I wish all of you the best! I'll be back again; it's looking like December now. I would love to see "Scrooge" at The Paramount!Oh, and Maureen... I learned some new things about you! Kudos for being mentioned in the Foreward of Helen Pike's book (Frank D as well)... and also for posing for the Baronet mural (I am sorry they painted it over.)Be well!Glenn

And what does all this in the Press mean?

"The bar is closing, but the door isn't shut for the final chapter."

Wait, there's more.

"We are trying to make this area a cool, neat place to be," says Larry

"The place was always a cornerstone. It'd be a shame to close it down."

In addition, from Detective Connie Breech:

"Hi Everyone! As some of you may know, Georgies is having a Breast

I think people should protest in front of the Fishmans' houses. That
might get them to pick up the pace.

I love you too!
When I can't afford travel, I watch the Travel Channel and what draws
travelers to a specific place. Is it the mountains? Cathedrals?
Hotels? NO! It's the uniqueness of say, Paris, with its' Eiffel
Tower! Italy for its' Leaning Tower! Asbury Park, for its'

What is New Orleans known for? Mardi Gras/French Quarter/French
cuisine/Emeril and BAM! Not to mention Louisiana Porch Puppies, AKA
Alligators! New York! Would anyone tear down Lady Liberty? Radio
City? The Plaza or anything on 5th Ave.? NO!

I have to ask, why oh why would anyone want to tear down Coney Island?
There would be no reason to go to Brooklyn, other than Juniors!
Hinge, I know you've traveled all over. Me too! I've been under the

2007-10-01 Thread radio881gal
Thought I posted something about this on Asbury Radio, but it's not
showing up yet.
(This is opinion, by the way.)

Last night of the Wonder Bar:
Why was Gary Mottola standing there talking to Tony Pelligrosi,
actually at the Wonder Bar for hours at its farewell party, like he
wasn't the cause of the farewell.
And Terry Reidy, the city manager, tells Werner Baumgartner, the A.P.
historian, that's the problem with you – you just can't seem to live
in the moment. I laughed hysterically. Isn't relating to the past an
occupational trait among historians?
I'll have to find the copy I wrote for the site. I put it somewhere.

Maureen - Sorry, I missed Hinge and Sharon!!! Great meeting Glenn!!

[AsburyPark] Re: Notes from this weekends visit and Thank you Wonderbar!

2007-10-01 Thread 2fine4u
Seriously,
If we're all going to be around AP for the Holidays, we should
synchronize telephone calls or privately email each other, meet up and
form a circle, until we meet again, sort of like "Happy Trails" and
all that. Hinge, if you ever saw a Roy Rogers movie, you know what I
mean. Mario, was supposed to come out, but doesn't go for that music.
I realized that I can't go for it anymore and giggled at how loud it
was. After 2 drinks, you don't care! I had to go to give up the 10
bucks for the animals anyway, to support Debbie and Lance. That's
what I wanted to sing, Happy Trails and all, 'til we meet again!
She's a lovely girl and she and Lance make a handsome pair. They have
magic, which is why a green building, with a wierd looking man-boy,
candy-striped awnings and twinkly lights, WORK!

For me, it's like stepping into Never Land! When you exit, it's the
same old, same old! Hinge: Hot tea with plenty of lemon & honey!
Chicken soup, Jell-o and crackers, lots of fluids! Feed a cold, as
they say! Hope you feel better! Glenn, sorry I missed you!

took a look at the locations in satellite pics. Yeah, Rte 35, which
last year was my first thought would work, but I still bet it would be
West. I am thinking more Rte 66 and west. Right off GSP, near outlet mall.

Agreed there is no current place to park, but the Westfield location
certainly does not have great parking. The closest lot is pay and the
free one is jammed. The weekends Downtown are murder.

If I were TJ's and wanted to go in Monmouth, this latitude would be
right, but I would probably go in further west. I don't know most of

As it stands now you typically have to travel quite a distance to go
to TJ's since they are limited in number and geographically dispersed.

There are 6 existing locations in NJ with a 7th coming in Edgewater.
Only one is in south NJ (very south) near Trenton. Westfieled is the
closest to NY and the one to me and it takes at least 1/2 hour or more
to get there. The rest are generally northern NJ. mid and southern NJ
seem a natural and I am sure they are working on it. When it comes to
NY, there are 5 on LI, one in Queens and one in Manhattan. I thought
there was talk of one opening in Brooklyn. There are several in
Westchester. So for many, it is quite a trip to go to TJ's. And people
go. I go for the wine. If it were nearer, I would go for more. TJ's is
a draw. They could go anyplace around Monmouth and be a draw. I cannot
imagine them not serving Monmouth. Most likely they will go to
Freehold by Rte 9 if I had to guess. I really don't know what
criterion they exactly look at.

What's that empty space across from the Met Hotel called?
The Triad?
That would be a great location. You could easily fit the store and the parking
right there.
Plus, it could help block my view of Wesley Grove.

"affluent and educated"

So you see, it takes alot of talking in busness development to get it.
They can sit back and wait for more progress. They need 10-12,000 sq ft
of which there is really only ONE ot TWO locations today that would
work and the tenants would have to move or let me be creative. Then you
have to figure out where people would park.

TJ's isn't going to come or 4 or 5 people. They'll need a palce to
park, because there isn't enough residential in the Dtown to support it
with no EASY parking.

Would you shop at Trader Joes if:

1. It were to open in the redvelopment zone? - Definitely. I could walk to it

2. Open on the "other side" of the tracks - say Springwood Ave? - Sure

3. Open in Long Branch - in the redvelopment zone / Ocean Ave? - Remotely
possible

4. Toms River? - Absolutely never. I can't stand all the strip malls

5. How far would you travel to go to TJs? - 10 miles

[AsburyPark] Re: Asbury To lose a Supermarket

2007-10-01 Thread Hinge
Absolutely. Dan has brought this up many times. There may be a problem though.
Perhaps
Trader Joe's is a bit hesitant to open a store in Asbury yet because of the bad
public
perception that the city still has to deal with.
I just checked the Trader Joe's website and noticed that they are opening a
store in the
place where i lived before moving to AP, Edgewater. Damn...

Sounds like a blend between Pier Village and Red Bank.
I used to love Red Bank when it felt like mainstreet USA. Now it feels like an
upscale mall
that I can't afford to shop in. Mainstreet Disney.
Pier Village is one of the worst examples of modern American architecture that
i've ever
seen.
Another example is the new Tinton Falls municipal complex that you can see just
off of the
parkway. To me, it looks like an oversized version of the little houses from a
Monopoly
game, molded, boring, boxey.

2007-10-01 Thread Joe Jackson
Gabrielle,

you hit it right on the head. I feel the same way about the
pretentious pricks that are mobbing the downtown and other parts of
town. They have no respect. I have to live with it everyday (I live
downtown). I'm sad to say that as more and more high end businesses
move into town, the unique character of the city will go the way of
the dodo. It's already happening. Pretty soon we'll have a high
end, "upscale" (I'm so sick of that word) beachfront where only the
rich are welcome. It's a sad but true reality, one that unfortunately
cannot be stopped so long as greed over substance and creativity
rules the city. I really don't think there is a developer out there
that would be right for the job. They all have the same agenda, the
bottomline. Everyone complains about Asbury Partners (yes they do
suck) but what they don't realize is that any other developer would
do the same things they're doing. I'm not convinced Madison Marquette
is the answer. They've been heard saying (my source is rock solid) to
a boardwalk vendor that they are looking for Borgata on the beach,
with fake palm trees in the sand and cocktail waitress serving drinks
to people on the beach. They've also been heard saying they want the
AP beachfront to be like Pier Village in Long Branch. Not a good
sign.

I drove past the JSRM the other day, around 3 pm. There were some pretty nasty,
greasy

2007-10-01 Thread Hinge
Asbury Partners is destroying Asbury to make an enclave for themselves and
people with
money. It's obvious that when they got involved, they saw $ first, history
last. They don't
care at all about Asburys history, whether it be architecturally, or the music
history that
Asbury is very known for around the world.

You don't see any Crips, Bloods, etc. on Park Ave. Poor neighborhoods
are typically overburdened by social service facilities. The
conditions act as a petri dish for these gangs to germinate, breed and
proliferate. Allowing JSRM in AP only adds to the toxic mix. AP has

Why considering?
Good question.
What about the concept they had about having mounted PD?
Seems to me the $ would be better spent on cameras.

[AsburyPark] "ring of steel" Cameras

2007-10-01 Thread oakdorf
Why consider, just act
the following:

LONDON - Residents of big cities like New York and London must accept
that they are under constant watch by video cameras, New York Mayor
Michael Bloomberg said Monday.

Bloomberg, holding talks with his London counterpart Ken Livingstone,
said such measures as London's "ring of steel" — a network of closed-
circuit cameras that monitors the city center_ were a necessary
protection in a dangerous world.

"In this day and age, if you think that cameras aren't watching you
all the time, you are very naive," Bloomberg told reporters at
London's City Hall. (EXCEPT AP)

"We are under surveillance all the time" from cameras in shops and
office buildings, "and in London they have multiple cameras on every
bus and in every subway car," he added.

"The people of London not only support it, but if Ken Livingstone
didn't do it they would try to run him out of town on a rail. We live
in a dangerous world, and people want to have security cameras."

During his visit, Bloomberg was getting a demonstration of the ring
of steel, a system of cameras and road barriers introduced during the
years of Irish Republican Army bombings to protect London's central
business district.

London has one of the world's highest concentrations of surveillance
cameras. An estimated 4 million CCTV cameras operate in Britain, and
some civil liberties campaigners have warned the country is becoming
a "surveillance state."

I wish I couldn've stayed longer, but I'm in the midst of a horrible cold.
It was really great to get to take my dog for a visit.
It's just another reason why i'm sad that the Wonder Bar is closing.
Debbie created such a great environment for music and people, and sometimes
their pets
to come hang out and have a good time.
The loss of the Wonder Bar is a great loss for Asbury Park.

Dan can supply the concrete. You might even try to make a fundraiser
out of it. Everyone can buy a brick.

Do you think Springstein is a member of Asbury Yahoo Groups?

[AsburyPark] Re: Notes from this weekends visit and Thank you Wonderbar!

2007-10-01 Thread 2fine4u
Glenn and Hinge:
I missed the BOTH of you! Should have synchronized my coming!
Debbie, told me I had just missed you, Hinge! Said you took the dog,
home!  The only people I knew beside Debbie, was Henry and Vince;
that's Henry Vaccaro and Vince Gifford. I didn't get there, until
about 6:20 PM, couldn't find a place to park, then went inside the
hole in the fence and parked out behind the WonderBar! I only went to
support Debbie and Lance, had my 2 obligatory drinks, 2 scotches,
lolligagged with Vince, who knows me through my Hugh McCluskey days,
when I was SUPPOSED to be retired and someone thought I needed
something to do! As Vince said, that job convinced me, to STAY
retired. In everything a lesson, is learned. Anyway, there was a
pretty lively crowd, people with pets, interesting doggies, etc. I
couldn't take the loud music and left! Will try to meet up with the
group, hopefully before Xmas. Say when! Great posts, from both of you.
