[AsburyPark] Car for sale?

2008-02-07 Thread kvel
I have some clients who recently purchased a home here in AP, and are in the
market for a reliable commuter vehicle for back & forth to NYC. They're
looking in the $5,000 range - anybody have a car to sell?

Also, I was wondering if anybody here is involved in a car-pool back & forth to
NYC - any info is appreciated!

Thanks, Carl Chesna

Hey Dan, there are some late 1800's early 1900's pictures of Asbury
Park on e-bay I saw today. The ones of the boardwalk are terrific.
Very clear and versions I have never seen before. And I have seen
countless pictures. Is there anyway you can upload some of these for us?

By the way, the picture of the Lake House you uploaded was great.

I love your song. May I be Eva? "N Asbury Park is where I'd
rather be. Sandy Hook is not for me. I just adore a pavilion view.
Darling I love you, but give me Fifth avenue"

Green Acres - the act is not the same as Open Space although Open Space
can be Green Acres. Turtle Back Zoo is a green acres space. Many
towns use green acres for sport fields. Many historical sites are
green acres. People often confuse the two acts, but while they may
both apply to some properties they can also apply individually to
others.

[AsburyPark] Green Acres

2008-02-07 Thread Jennifer
The purpose of Green Acres is "providing parks and outdoor recreation
facilities, urban wildlife preserves, and quality open spaces in our
cities, suburbs and other developed communities throughout the State.
To further this goal, Green Acres provides assistance to local
governments and nonprofit organizations to develop parks and outdoor
recreation facilities in their communities."
Green Acres requires public access as it is funded with public money.
Public access includes "Provide public restrooms and parking for the
project site if directed by the department based on the proposed use of
the project site and the nature of and extent of public demand."
http://www.nj.gov/dep/cmp/access/pa_rule_highlights.pdf

This should be the case with the boardwalk. A boardwalk needs
bathrooms.

The "value" of open space?

Werner I've read literally hundreds of testimonials and people's
reminiscing about Asbury Park. I've read where the recall fondly the
Ocean, the rides, the amusements, the restaurants, the concerts.

Do you know what I've never read? This:

"My fondest memories of Asbury Park were those little empty spaces in
the middle of the Boardwalk where you couldn't do shit. Yea, that's
what I liked. I could just stare and stare at those little empty
spaces all day long. Book me another trip back to Asbury Park, Baby!
I just have to go look at those little blank spaces between the
amusements where you can't do a dammed thing. Wooo Hooo!! Good
Times!!!"

Good grief.

Present day Park Ave was originally Grand Avenue. It ran from Oak
Bluff Ave and Corlies (now 8th Ave) south to Sunset Ave. The southerly
part of Grand Ave from 5th Ave south is in the same place it is now.
The northerly part of present day Grand Ave from Sunset to oak Bluff
Ave (Deal Lake Drive) was named Packard St. I guess sometime after
(when they built the Grand Ave Bridge) they switched the streets so
Grand runs as it does now and renamed it to Park and retired the
Packard name.

[AsburyPark] Re: Success and Faulure

2008-02-07 Thread FleurDeLis
Werner,
My perception of AP, in 1968, was that Cookman Ave., WAS the downtown!
I didn't know where Springwood Ave. was. I was taken to Steinbach's
to shop. When I moved here 2 years later, Springwood Av. was burned
out from the riot. I have to look in the Carter book, to see what
Springwood had, even though I regularly attended Mass at St. Peter
Claver's. I received ashes yesterday, over at Holy Spirit, (4 blocks
away). All of my kids sacramental records, have been transferred
there, so I'm signing in as a parishioner. The old St. Peter's is the
original Mt. Carmel Church, that now sits on Asbury Ave.

Every indicator tells me that Cookman and Main Sts. were the main
drag. I still miss Steinbach's and the children's store on Cookman
and Bond. I bought all of my kid's First Communion clothes, my baby's
christening dress, bought most of their shoes at the shoe store next
to a men's store whose name escapes me, (somebody and David's). I had
heard that Springwood Ave. had a store named Fisch's, but Fische's
moved to where the Foodtown is in Ocean Twp., on Hwy. 35 south. I
remember when Hwy. 35 had 2 lanes, 1 north and 1 south. Nahan's is
still in Ocean Twp. where it moved, after the riots. I could go on,
but what's the point? Developer's want what they want and the older
residents, who toughed it out through the 70's, 80's and 90's be
damned! Screw the kids too! They don't come here with any, so their
question is, "why do my taxes go to the schools"?

Well, families with kids were here before you were, most of the
schools are on the West Side, save Thurgood Marshall's, but it sits on
the site of the old Bond St. School! The nationalities of the kids
have dramatically been changed, to Mexican/Haitian, from African
American/Caucasians. Just cross the city line and see how many kids
are in Neptune! Neptune, also gets the kids from Avon, Bradley Beach
and Neptune City, in the Middle and High School. Always have, since
I've been here. You want to live in a resort? Move to Seaside!
They've taken all of AP's beach business, due to the ineptness of the
authorities, who blamed past administrations, but are no better!
Someone's pulled the wool over their eyes and once the covers are
pulled back, they see what they've given up. Asbury's "true"
identity. Gone, forever!

[AsburyPark] Re: Two Choices

2008-02-07 Thread FleurDeLis
Oak,
You have a heart of Gold! Yes, a plaque would be appropriate.
I spent many an afternoon, with my 2 sons, ages 7 and 8 at the time,
playing their first game, over at Jumping Brook Fields. They looked
like 2 "bobble-head" dolls, the first year. It was their learning
year. My youngest son, played up to Babe Ruth, until he went off to
Glassboro. I got many a "tan" early, when they started up in
mid-March. There were always the SAME parents, at any event I went
to. Be it Pop Warner, Little League and Biddy Basketball. When my
boys graduated to Varsity sports, we were there. Football,
Basketball, Indoor track at Red Bank Regional and outdoor track at
Rutgers and Princeton.

We were there at Jadwin Gym, when Neptune beat Camden, by 20 points.
I attended the Penn Relays for years after the kids were out of
college, until they began to marry. I also saw many a star athlete
from Asbury Park, excel in Football, Holiday Jubilees at Monmouth
College, (Basketball), and was Asbury's team mother in track, even
though my boys ran for Neptune. Asbury Park has had some of the
finest athletes at the Shore, in spite of anything you may have heard
about Asbury Park. My sons are now 45 and 43, respectively and
entertain their own kids, the way I indulged and entertained them.

Enjoy your children while they are young. They grow so fast, but when
they remember the wonderful times they spent with you, it makes all
the difference. I could tell you a funny story about me and the kids
at a Budweiser Beer Fest at the Meadowlands, but it'll keep. Just ask
me about the "fake" pair of Candies shoes I bought and what happened.
My kids fall all over the floor laughing at their "crazy" mother, who
wanted "style", but didn't want to pay for it. Lesson: You get what
you pay for!

Hi Dan the Man,

That's an 1877 Map showing Oak Bluff Avenue. What has me using some
caution is that I have later maps (for instance an 1890) that doesn't
even show the road built yet.

Probably needs some research beyond looking at Maps for the answer.

Werner?

Where I come from, the beaches are FREE! I thought I was being
"fleeced", the first time, I stepped onto the 16th Ave. Beach, in
Belmar. I wound up buying beach badges, for my kids. When I realize
the Beach WAS the industry here, I understood. I can't fault anyone
from trying to make a living, but I still think the residents should
be admitted FREE! Well, kids, anyway.

Re: [AsburyPark] Boardwalk Pavilion Renovations -- Trading Lavender for Life's Necessities

2008-02-07 Thread charlie
I agree totally. The idea of removing the bathrooms from the pavillions
is MM's way of maximizing their retail space. If the bathrooms do stay, does
that mean the center cross thru remains to the boardwalk? The acutally
bathrooms arn't what's taking up the space, it's the center walkthru.
There was talk from MM about a way to add heating coils within the
exterior walls to keep them from freezing in the winter months.

Oak Bluff Avenue.

I'm not sure though if that was a proposed name or if it actually
bore that name for a period of time.

Breezes are taller than buildings.

Green Acres down the beach is a waste.

Ocean City only has enough space between boardwalk buildings for you
to walk through.

They get plenty of breeze, and Asbury Park would cut off its right
arm to be as nice as that place and have as many visitors.

Plain and simple, one pavilion in between the casino and convention
hall should have all the public restrooms, lockers, showers, etc.
Another pavilion north of convention hall should have the same. Deal
or no deal.

In addition, the green acres space is to be open. By law and by
Bradley's covenant. The idea was to keep these areas open as to allow
for the ocean air to funnel up to Main and beyond. Flared streets at
the Ocean Avenue, remember.

I don't think those pop out bathrooms on the open space were considered
to be temporary. I recall someone asking a questin of some sort; MM's answer
back was that they were perminate? If i'm wrong, correct me. But i'm pretty
sure the idea of bathrooms on the green acre space was a perminate idea.
Nothing to do with the time frame of being completed by Memorial day.

So you think not, Mo? If MM decided to build permenant structures on
the Green Acres for bathrooms for next summer, watch all the AP libs
scream for government regulations.

Should have let them get a head start by pulling out the bathrooms
this year and using the temp bathrooms. Build the permenant ones
this winter.

Green Acres = waste of valuable space.

What was the nature of the officer's business at that address at that

Let MM rip out the bathrooms and build permenant
bathrooms/lockers/showers on the green acres space.

Green Acres at the beach are nothing but a useless waste of space.
But that's what you get with a City full of libs who love the
government to regulate everything - problems for the business that
will bring it back.

Reap what you sow.

22 minutes ago >>> _Big Mob Sweep Nets Gambino Hierarchy - New York
Times_ (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/07/nyregion/07cnd-mob.html?hp)
Federal and state authorities early Thursday began rounding up scores of
accused organized crime figures on a series of indictments charging murder,
racketeering, construction extortions and other crimes in the largest such
sweep
in recent memory, law enforcement officials said.
More than 60 people — among them the entire _Gambino_
(http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/g/gambino_crime_family/index.html?i
nline=nyt-per) family hierarchy and reputed figures from the Genovese and
Bonanno families — are named in two indictments, along with union and
construction industry officials, the law enforcement officials said.
By about 10 a.m., 52 people were already in custody, including the family’s
acting underboss, Domenico Cefalu, and consigliere, Joseph Corozzo, the
officials said. The acting boss, who prosecutors identified as John D’Amico,
known
as Jackie the Nose, was not yet in custody and several officials said he was
believed to be on vacation.
The arrests are to be announced later this morning at a news conference at
the office of United States Attorney Benton J. Campbell in Brooklyn.
The charges, which are being brought in United States District Court in
Brooklyn and state Supreme Court in Queens, also include seven murders — three
dating back more than a quarter century — along with racketeering, extortion
and
 state gambling charges, officials said.
The arrests by the _F.B.I._
(http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/f/federal_bureau_of_investigation/index.html?inline=nyt-org)

and investigators from several other agencies were coordinated with a sweep
that netted dozens of accused organized crime figures in Sicily. Those
charges are not directly linked to the New York arrests, but officials said
they
were part of a new American-Italian strategy aimed at severing the close
cooperative relationship between the Gambino family and the Sicilian mob.
In addition to Mr. D’Amico, Mr. Cefalu and Mr. Corozzo, the 82-count federal
indictment charges six Gambino captains, who serve as the family’s midlevel
managers, along with more than a dozen soldiers, officials said. A large
number of family associates are also being charged.
The construction extortion aspects of investigation, which began more than
three years ago, focused on the trucking industry, which hauls away dirt
excavated from major construction projects, officials said. Several union
officials were also charged in a scheme to steal union benefits.
Among those charged was Anthony Delvescovo, a project manager and director of
tunnel operations for Schiavone Construction Company, a heavy construction
firm that has worked on major public works projects in the New York area,
according to the indictment.
Four trucking company executives, from companies including SRD Contracting,
Firehawk Enterprises, Jo-Tap Industries, Andrews Trucking and Dump Masters of
NY Inc., were also charged.
The trucking firms were licensed by the city’s Business Integrity Commission,
an agency which polices private carting companies and businesses that haul
construction debris. The commission, which also had a role in the
investigation, was expected to move to revoke the companies’ licenses today.
The construction projects cited in the case include a _Nascar_
(http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/n/national_association_of_
stock_car_auto_racing/index.html?inline=nyt-org) track in Staten Island,
where site preparation work was done but which was never completed because
racing officials scuttled the plan in the face of community opposition,
officials
said.
Also the subject of extortions was the Liberty View Harbor project in Jersey
City, the officials said.
The seven murders include five that prosecutors are charging were committed
by one Gambino soldier, Charles Carneglia, between 1976 and 1990, officials
said. The first was the slaying of Arthur Gelb, a highly decorated court
officer who arrested Mr. Carneglia in a Queens dinner after noticing he was
carrying a pistol. Mr. Gelb was shot four days before he was to testify
against Mr.
Carneglia in that case.
The last killing was an armored car guard, Jose Delgado Rivera, an armored
car guard who was shot in the back during a robbery, the officials said.
The federal case, which was investigated by the F.B.I. along with the _United
States Department of Labo

Yeah, like a splash of sewer water instead of lavender water. We
long-time residents know about that for sure; but "hope springs eternal."

I notice, BTW, that the criteria for the top NJ beaches doesn't touch on
bathrooms. Think that's a given?

Maybe under the euphemisms "amenities" or "personal space"? Toilets with
"fluffy towels" sounds good.

[AsburyPark] Boardwalk Pavilion Renovations -- Trading Lavender for Life's Necessities

2008-02-07 Thread radio881gal
Madison Marquette and Asbury Partners, as part of its limited
liability company, showed their plans to the planning board Monday
night for renovating the boardwalk pavilions from 1st to 5th Avenues.
The plan is for retail space to be completed by Memorial Day. That's
just fine except the plans also call for ripping out the sewers lines
that are already in the pavilions. The city should refuse to grant
any permits for removing bathrooms in the pavilions.
MM's argument is that retailers don't want the hassles that
accompany the traffic that passes by their shops enroute to the
public restrooms. However Planning Board members didn't buy it,
saying it was obvious that the design was trying to maximize the
retail space.
In conceding to protests about eliminating bathrooms, the
architect and reps from MM, including John Lanham, first offered to
include bathrooms in the Second Avenue pavilion if Green Acres (CAFRA
the coastal landuse department of the State Dept. of Environmental
Protection has already given its approval) refuses their request to
put public bathrooms as part of pop up retail kiosks on the Green
Acres properties between the pavilions. (What an environmental insult
this is - putting toilets on Green Acres?) By the way, the pop up
alternatives won't be there year round, because they wouldn't be
heated.
Finally, it appeared that MM had vowed to keep the public
restrooms in the Second Ave pavilion, regardless of the Green Acres
reaction to its plan. This is quite a concession considering that the
public swim club - which has to be built before a public swim club
can be erected - is going to be placed in the Second Ave.
pavilion.
The public club plans call for a pool 18" deep, with "fluffy
pillows" scattered about, in addition to about 50 lounges, and
attendants walking among clubbers, who will pay $5 a day, spritzing
them with "lavender water" and handing out "fluffy white towels". A
scene out of a W Hotel ad, no?
Seriously folks, here's another cheap trade off under the
rationale of rushing to meet a deadline. Sewer lines, as every
homeowner or property owner knows, are a huge investment. Why would
we would we rip them out? And temporary toilets send a huge negative
message to visitors wondering if Asbury's rebirth is permanent. "Yeah
lady, it's as permanent as that toilet seat there."
The council doesn't want to see the bathrooms go. Most of the
planning board didn't buy it. But they need to know how residents
feel, too, to give them more ammo in fighting this one. So please
send an email, pick up the phone - open the window and SCREAM!!!

[AsburyPark] Gun Shots on Deal Lake

2008-02-07 Thread radio881gal
County detectives are swarming all over the east end of Deal Lake Dr.
Gun shots were fired - a cop was fired at - around 3:30 AM. A county
detective stopped me to ask if I'd heard or seen anything. The incident
happened at Kingsley Arms.
I walked down there, or as far as I could get, since the officers
weren't letting people walk on either side of the street east of Web
St. They were turning people back up toward Web. What I thought odd was
that there was only one Asbury Park Police vehicle, a van, unless there
were unmarked local police cars there among the county vehicles.
Usually, when an event happens you see multiple police cruisers on the
scene.
Anyone have any details on this?

Still playing with semantics and sweating the small stuff. No one is
asserting Springwood was called "Downtown," which is a colloquialism
devoid of real meaning anyway.

The point is Springwood was as much a shopping district as Cookman.
It was frequented far more often than Cookman was by the local
residents (Cookman was for outsiders).

I certainly don't have to be worried about being "misinformed" since I
have the benefit of being the Asbury Park historian who actually saw
it all with his own 2 eyes.

You are misinterpreting/misinformed - The 'Downtown' was always in
the Cookman area - that's where the commercial/business center of AP
developed.

That's where AP's 6 Banks were located, City hall, Offices ... etc.

Yes, Springwood was a 'Shopping District' but not a Downtown - more
like a neighboorhood commercial district. It was not even part of AP
until 1906.

Your back to your old trick, making assertions that dont exist - I
never said Cookman should benefit and not Springwood.

Yes The Memorial/Springwood corner would be a great place for
extending municipal services - a new Firehouse, Rec Center,
Polce/Court.. etc.

But selling the existing City Hall is still a bad idea and not
neccessary to effectuate your desire to develope services 'across
the tracks'

[AsburyPark] Re: any apts 4 rent...Bye Bye Flamingo Hotel,

2008-02-07 Thread Jack Pitzer
Looks like the Flamingo demolition will be started today.
Is anybody else disturbed by this. Now, I'm not saying that it's an
architectural gem or
anything like that...but, it's a viable business being torn down for no good
reason at all.
Same goes for those apts. mentioned below. Here we have a person with a great
apt, great
location and great price being moved away. Why? Why is that apt. building
vacant? I
suppose it will be demo'd as well. So now we are losing the last affordable
apts by the
ocean and a viable hotel. Meanwhile, rotting bungalows continue to sit there.
The Metropolitan will contain to rot away and be a danger to my neighborhood.
Makes no
sense at all.

The above post ignores the history of Asbury Park.

There was always to distinct shopping districts - Cookman was one,
Springwood was the other.

Why should the default postion be to benefit just Cookman? Why not
benefit Springwood? AP just passed the Springwood Avenue plan last
night. That Redevelopment is going to need all the help we can give
it.

Isn't it about time we turned our attention to Springwood?

For all the benefits you assert above that would help Cookman, for
those very same reasons, we should sell all the municipal property on
Main to commercial developers, and build a state of the art Muni
Complex starting at Springwood and Memorial heading west.

It would increace the Downtown by extending commercialism across Main
Street, and Springwood would get the kick it needs.

Review my post about the Asbury Park Zone

'There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is
a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the

an area which we call "The Asbury Park Zone".'

Thank You

I've also heard the 'sell City Hall' proposal. Rediculous idea, they
are currently putting a new $1M+ roof on the building - There is
enough to be developed all over town without selling another public
asset.

The larger issue it what you observed - Municipal services SHOULD be
located on Main Street. Downtown, Post Office, Banks, Food.. all
within walking distance.

That is the traditional American City Model that works. As to DPW -
it is where it is, essentially hidden from view by the Grove Square
and Railroad. If one didn't know the boundries it would appear to be
in Neptune.

The corner of Main/Springwood.(which is very unattractive)is the key
to creating an impressive entry to AP. The Tranportation Center
looks right over to there.

That corner needs to be addressed. As I said functionl proximity of
sevices needs to be a consideration. DPW/Police/Court would work
together very well.

Not a bad idea, I do like it.

However, I know some people feel these buildings (DPW, Police, City
Hall and Fire and EMT Services) should be relocated off Main in order
to open up the land to redevelopment. I personally like government
institutions such as these on Main Streets. DPW is another matter
though.

Unfortunately, moving DPW would be very expensive - there are fuel
tanks to deal with and I beleive it is still a monitored 'brown
fields' site.

Certainly a boxing ring is a poor use of the DPW building. That
space
was intended to be records/office space.

I agree that the corner of Main and Springwood needs to be address.
My
recommendation has always been to aquire the property and build a
new
police/courts facility there.

Police operations are very tied to DPW vehicle maintainance and
fueling operations so its a natural to put them next to each other.
A
new Court could be the corner stone, include some parking.
That frees up the south wing of the existing City Hall for municipal
functions.

This integrates all city operations in a homogeneous strip that
makes
sense from South to North - DPW, Police, Court, Transportation, City
Hall, Post Office.
