[AsburyPark] Re: Help Need with ReVision's productions of HAIR.

2008-07-21 Thread Tom

Thanks for asking about our production.

What makes the ReVision Theatre unique is what our name implies. When
you see a ReVision Theatre production you will be seeing a show that
you will not be able to see anywhere else. We put our unique stamp on
everything we do. Anyone who saw HELLO, DOLLY! knows that is true. We
were attracted to producing HAIR in the Carousel building because we
knew the space would add to our unique vision. You will see HAIR from
a new point a view and that includes the seating. To understand and
experience what we mean, you'll have to buy a ticket.

And speaking of tickets...they are selling at an amazingly brisk pace
so you better hurry and purchase your tickets now or you'll miss it!

[AsburyPark] Re: Fireworks

2008-07-21 Thread dapawprint
Hi John,

I took the "Gay History of Asbury Park" Trolley Tour on Saturday
night (they serve free wine, by the way [I passed] and a look at the
Wesley Grove complex.)

Although "RoadTrip" was going in full force on the boardwalk, the
sidewalks of Cookman were full of people. The business owners on
Cookman had themselves all decked out and it looked wonderful. I
directed a family to Cookman that evening, promising (like I can do
that - lol) a great time. I am sure that they had at least a "good
time".

I departed Asbury Park at 6:30PM on Sunday. Since a local friend had
warned me that the Parkway was a mess, I chose to take 36 (Ocean) up
to Eatontown before getting on the Parkway. When I left Asbury Park,
the Boardwalk was buzzing with people.

Since I was heading up 36, I took side trips in Deal and Long Branch
to check the crowds out on their boardwalks. Well, there were
no "crowds"; just a few walkers and a angler here and there.

I don't have the scoop (for sure) on the Cookman businesses, but it
appeared that they at least had foot traffic.

As far as 11PM fireworks, hmmm, I suppose that it it not much
different than Jack having to listen to Tina Turner being blasted at
the Tea Dance (from The Empress) every Sunday. It's part of the
package.

I will tell you that I live one block from a beach and there are
fireworks every July 4th. I THOUGHT that my dog had no problems with
the fireworks, until we were at The Empress on Friday. She bolted
into the room and tried to get into the duck's cage for consolation.
I simply closed the balcony door and the Windows at the hotel and
there were no sounds from the fireworks it in the room. Then it
dawned on me that I always have the dog inside on July 4th at home
with doors and windows closed.

Maybe a compromise is the solution, close the place up at 10:45 and
open it again at 11:15 - it's a small compromise if it is bringing
money to your City (just my two cents.)

Oh, and about the "Gay History of Asbury Park Tour", good thing I
didn't bring Werner, lol, apparently Ethel Merman used to put on
water shows at the Monte Carlo Pool!! (Picture THAT!) [Esther
Williams] (I am not making fun of the tour guide, 99% of his
information matched Werner's information - now I am rating
Historians!)

Thanks again for a great visit,

Glenn

Hi David,

I wish that I was a neighbor! I would be there to help. (I spent an

Can you explain to the group how the seating is being planned?

I am very interested in how you are going to pull this off. And...
if MM hasn't requested a site inspection of that Parking lot (the
main reason that most of the lots are closed), you might want to
encourage them to get them ready for inspection and make the request,
people will want to park.

I think it is greatI am not aware of any other town that has
fireworks that late and it sets AP apart.

we have to cater to all different crowds here and as long as each

They want to keep people lingering on the BW longer - better (to a
point) for merchants that are open.

You want people hanging around - playing golf, drinking booze,
relaxing, making three trips to ralph's etc.

They have lots of fireworks planned for the rest of the summmer -
little shows - but they work.

Merchants are lucky that MM does this to bring people around.

Wasn't that long ago that maybe 8 boardwalk merchants in the early
90's would sit around and try to figureout how long a $3,000 firework
shows can be dragged out. Tops was 20 minutes or 8 minutes.

No UEZ. No chamber. No Advert $. No major marketing co (like mm).
Zippo.

Staph was from the ocean, not the hospital. Don't believe them when
they say the ocean water is good for wounds.

But getting NJ plates would be dishonest since my primary is still NY.

JSMC seems to have a problem lately with staph.

Make it official and get Jersey Plates. Apparently that bumper sticker

How many handicap spots are there?

Interlaken and Allenhurst like those NY plate.

That was my wife driving. But a coincidence. I am recuperting after
breaking my nose on 6/28 on a boogie board. That led into 3 days later
not being able to walk and 2 trips to JSUMC, the last visit required a
1 week stay. Both trips were by the fantastic AP ambulance. The broken
nose led to a staph infection in my blood and going septic (lessen
never to wash wound in the ocean), with the infection settling in my
hips. I was released last week with a pic line in my arm needing to
give myself IV antibiotics 3 times a day for 4 weeks.

I can walk somewhat with the help of two canes. So I have a handicap
permit and we get lucky enough to find the last open handicap parking
spot in front of the Salt Water Cafe.

We return to the spot later in the day and I find a ticket that says
IMPROPER PARKING. We take a picture of the car to show it is parked in
space #94 a handicapped space and the permit in my windshield. BTW to
the south of my spot is a black cadillac with a handicap permit parked
not in a handicap space but the loading zone to my space. It has NJ
plates and NO TICKET. To the north of my (legal) space is a black
Porsche Cayenne and two other vehicles parked in in-valid spaces (no
spaces at all but part of the buffer zone to the curb cut to CH). All
have NJ plates, handicap permits and NO TICKETS.

I find the officer who ticketed me and ask him why. He said because I
was in the loading zone and not the handicap space. I say look at the
photo. He says sorry but nothing he can do now.

So what am I to think? I am legally parked in the handicap spot with a
valid permit but have NY PLATES and am ticketed. 3-4 other vehicles
adjacent to me are parked illegally, have handicap permits and NJ
plates and are NOT TICKETED.

I see only two possibilities - 1) officer's judgment is seriously
compromised to call his ability into question or 2) needed to write a
summons and figured someone with NY plates probably wouldn't waste the
time to contest it.

Sorry my wife almost backed into you.

Think alike.

I was tempeted to pull over for a few minutes and start waiving cars in.

They can do it the old fashioned way like at the Monmouth Park.

just an old car counter and college kids taking cash. I always asked
how come you want to work the lot all summer.

The counter was on the ground. A little metal bar stuck up and as the
car went over it - it would increment the counter. I guess someone
figured out all you had to was the turn the little gadget around and
the counter would decrease.

I am a couple of months ahead of you. Brought that up to the City a
few months ago. My suggestion was that their lots have numbered spaces
as well and if the system could handle it, report the parking revenue
from those spots and enter into some revenue sharing agreement. MM
can't have spots that are in competition with the metered parking.

I believe that it was blocked to encourage people to buy admission

approached for approval to erect the blue screen (the promoter didn't

On Sunday, the Waffle guy was gone, but Waffles had been added to the
Organic menu.

Yes.

Good question.

Yes, I heard complaints in that regard.

By mid-day, Convention Hall was opened so that people not
participating in Sand Blast could use the restroom facilities in CH.
The O. Ave sign lead to another sign on the boardwalk which directed
people to Convention Hall. There was also a "Boardwalk Update" flyer
available at those horrible white boxes with blue roofs (the info
boxes) which detailed what was open on the boardwalk and in the CH
arcade. The last lines of the flyer says "YOU DO NOT HAVE TO USE THE
PORTA-POTTIES. THERE ARE LOTS OF CLEAN, GENUINE REST-ROOMS JUST
INSIDE THE CONVENTION HALL DOORS!" (uppercase on the flyer, I am not
trying to yell)

While the shops in LB (and AP) may be for "some people" - the beaches
aren't and won't be.

I've sat in the middle of Pier village on the beach - and it's
probably the most diversified beach in M county. And if you want to
see how the women from South America wear a bikini - that's the place
to go.

Drive through Sea Bright - now that's really excluding some people.
And I'm one of the some (unless some other "one" invites me...then I
have to decide if I realy feel like being proper all day...or if I
want to hear about someone else
s "problems"...)

[AsburyPark] A couple things before the day gets going....

2008-07-21 Thread oakdorf
1. Roadtrip weekend: Interesting to see how the area where the event
was being held was blocked from general view. yes, some people will be
offended but life must go on. Doesn't seem like that long ago, but it
was, when the city held one of the first gay/lesnian parades on the bw
and there weren't tht many merchants (around five of us) and about 10
people on the boardwalk. I remember this one mother grabbing her 2
kids and running off the boardwalk.

So why was the event "hidden" from general view - to shield the event
from the public or to let the event be more private (other then those
that stood o benches to get a peek..)

2. Storage containers: They are enabling a few people to runa business
on the bw in a sixe that is actually right.
a)The organic folks extended their unit on the boardwalk with a guy
making waffles / ice cream,
b)What with the unit that looks like it became an office or a summer
house (next to the 4th ave pav), That's not pop up retail...
c)They need some more signage on them (like on the back)

3) who owns the mini-g - partners or is it leased out? Remember, the
city used to collect rent for the use of green spaces.

4) They need to sell beach badges down by first ave. One people walk
from one end of the BW to the other, they are less likely to walk
back. That hurts the guy trying down the "other end" for now.

5) Bathrooms closed at beach bar for Rtrip - MM was putting up signs
on O. Ave "Public Restrooms". Not sure of the porta potty really
counts. That really doesn't fit o the bw today. If you want to do it -
bring in a trailer and park it and trhow some plants in front of it.

Otherwise it was a busy weekend down in AP. Drove by paradise Sat
night around 1 am and the line was down the block - as were cars
parking down cookman and ap ave.

That's another point altogether! I think that the thought that went
into the initial design of the street plan was visionary. You have to
admit that the wide streets at the oceanside do allow some great
circulation to the uppper blocks in town,(of which I'm a beneficiary!)
If you compare Asbury design to say the obstruction of the oceanfront
in Long Branch you can see what extreme building conveysthe beach
is only for some people...for example.

You raise some good points. I had only been thinking about the facade
factor when I initially posted. Open spaces between the pavillions
does make sense if you are keeping with historical design standards.
It makes additional sense if you keep in mind environmental problems
of today. Thanks.

[AsburyPark] Parking Lots

2008-07-21 Thread oakdorf
How come the lots weren't opened this weekend?

Tough to find parking - especially if you just wanted to run and get
something on the BW.
Almost had a spot yesterday in front of McCloones around 4:30 - one of
those big black suvs with NY personalized plates and a london paris
asbury sticker almost backed into me.

It took me a few minutes to think want those letters stood for.

Somehow Dan must have a reserved spot.
