[AsburyPark] Tenants Rights Seminar
Hey All, The Community Health Law Project and Ocean Monmouth Legal Services are hosting a free tenants rights seminar on Thursday January 22, 2009 at 6:30 for the community. Another attorney and I will be discussing the rights of tenants in New Jersey. We will briefly touch on Section 8 tenancy and housing authorities as well, and we will take questions at the end. If you are a tenant or own property, you should consider attending. My office is overwhelmed with people losing their apartments or being taken advantage of by "unscrupulous" landlords. Also, landlords will be given a overview on the proper procedures to evict people. New Jersey has some unique laws pertaining to landlord/ tenant relationships. The City of Asbury Park is co-sponsoring the event and will be providing refreshments. Contact me if you have any questions, and please forward this to anyone who may be interested. amyqu...@gmail.com I will send out another reminder when we get a bit closer to the date. [AsburyPark] Sunset Lake Commission
Hi All, The Environmental and Shade Tree Commission has teamed up with the Sunset Lake Commission for a combined beautification project for Sunset Lake and the surrounding areas. Our current project is the strip on land by the 5th Ave foot bridge. The Department of Public Works (DPW) tilled the land for us, and now we need donations for the mums we want to plant there. If anyone can help, please email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or Ed Fagar at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Lastly, the Sunset Lake Commission is not a 501c(3) so your donation would not be tax deductible. [AsburyPark] Groomers!
All, I wanted to make two recommendations for groomers: The first is Debbie Tanza who comes to your home and grooms. Her phone number is (732) 269-1466. She is fabulous and does a wonderful job on our dogs. If your dogs are easier to groom outside your house, you should go to the Dawg Joint. Two locals who live in the Santander just opened it at 513 Bangs Ave. We brought the grouchier of our two dogs there this morning and picked him up a hour later looking wonderful. The Dawg Join has a great vibe, fantastic services, and unique dog foods and toys. Their prices are also reasonable. Their phone number is (732) 455-3145 Amy Quinn Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Garden of Joy
Hi all, I wanted to take a minute to thank everyone who donated supplies and money to the Garden of Joy. About a month ago I requested a long list of supplies and you folks came up with most of the items. There are still even more people helping out with a few more things. Also, thanks to the donated time by my fabulous partner Heather, Ms. Betty now has a website up and running at http://www.thegardenofjoy.org. To those of you who donated, thanks so much. Ms. Betty is a tireless teacher to the kids in Asbury Park, and you've helped her continue her work. Also, Ms. Betty is still in need of cash donations, a few more tomato cages, and notebooks. Email me if you can help. Best regards, Amy Quinn Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Hot Sand on the Boardwalk in Asbury!
Hi all, Friday night my partner, two of our friends, and I took a paperweight making class at Hot Sand. We first picked out two colors that we were going to use. Then we each had half an hour at a time with the instructors, who walked us each individually through the process on the first paperweight. Two of us made them while the other two watched or sat in the breeze on the boardwalk. Then for the second paperweight the instructors took a more background role & made suggestions for more ambitious designs. The whole process took about 3 hours, and we all had a lot of fun. The next day we picked up our paperweights, which looked amazing! This is an innovative and unique shop to have on our boardwalk, and I strongly encourge the communty to support it. FYI- If anyone decides to take a class, bring a bottle of water (or you can buy one next door) and wear sneakers instead of sandals or open toe shoes. http://www.hotsandap.com/workshops.html Amy Quinn Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Garden of Joy
Hey All, I wanted to mention that Pat Betty, an Ocean Grove resident, has been working on getting a Community Garden going and involving the children of Asbury Park. She is working with the Hope Academy Charter School (and soon with the Westside Community Center) on her project, called Garden of Joy. She's having a fundraiser next Sunday, June 24. Info below: Patricia Betty is a holistic health practitioner and aromatherapy educator. The idea was conceived and nourished by her years of teaching about herbs and scented plants at the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx. Now living in Ocean Grove, Betty noticed that Asbury Park has many unused pockets of land that are begging to be turned into useful "green" projects. Unable to resist this challenge, she decided to present her concept to Asbury Park City schools to assess interest in this unique Project a hybrid science course linking gardening with a curriculum of botany, health, domestic and earth sciences focused on inner-city sensibilities. A "whole brain" approach including the feeling senses. This is a great way for children to learn by doing. Volunteers and children enjoy the physical work of preparing and planting the garden, then watching the plants flourish, anticipating harvest and use. The concept has met with great enthusiasm, and the Garden of Joy is now partnered with the Neighborhood Preservation Society, The Environment and Shade Tree Commission, The Community Gardens and Trinity Church, among other worthwhile organizations. Donations of materials and other items have come in from Ocean Wholesale Nursery, Barlow's of Sea Girt, Shangri-La Nursery, Asbury Park Roastery and committed individuals. Please also join us for our first fundraising benefit: SUNDAY, JUNE 24, 2PM TO 5PM AT THE JOYFUL NOISE CAFÉ, 1400 ASBURY AVENUE (CORNER PROSPECT). Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Music will be provided by the dynamic team VIRAGO! For tickets and info, please call 732/861-2384 or email [EMAIL PROTECTED] Amy Quinn Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Greetings From Asbury Park
Hey all, I am posting this for a friend. Below are details about a screening of a movie that was shot in Asbury Park by an Asbury Park filmmaker. I have seen the documentary and it is amazing. It puts a face on eminent domain abuse in our own town and should be seen by all. (Also, donations are tax deductible and go to Woman Make Movies a 501 (C) (3) non profit media arts organization.) On Friday, June 22, 7:00pm at the Jersey Shore Arts Center in Ocean Grove, a special program marking the anniversary of Kelo Day, the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision that broadly expanded the use of eminent domain for private development. Featured will be a panel discussion with Dana Berliner, litigator for the public-interest law firm the Institute for Justice and co- counsel on the Kelo vs. New London case. The program also features a call to action for a state-wide moratorium on eminent domain abuse, a special in-the-works screening of Greetings from Asbury Park, a documentary feature film by Asbury Park filmmaker Christina Eliopoulos, and an awards ceremony honoring state leaders. Reception and meet and greet with panelists and special guests to follow. Limited seating available. Tickets: $20 suggested donation ($10 for students and seniors).Reservations required.
