What about Lake Como?  They are as scandal ridden as Asbury Park!
I still have family in what use to be S. Belmar!  When I lived there, 
it was "Peyton Place"!  For another East Asbury Park has Thurgood 
Marshall School.  Only 1 in 5 children are African-American!  They 
are mostly Mexican or South American/Haitian, with a few Puerto Rican-
Americans thrown in.  Anything below Memorial Drive/old Railroad Ave. 
is South Asbury Park, from Sunset Ave. to Heck Ave. where Neptune 
begins, so while those of you who want to delineate and re-draw 
Asbury Park, confuses the hell out of me!

For years, I've been looking for the address of Frederick Dempsey, a 
World War One soldier of color.  The American Legion Post that is 
named for him, began in Asbury Park in 1922.  His mother Emma Dempsey 
listed her address on Embury Ave., which back in 1918, was in Asbury 
Park.  For the hell of it, I Googled the address in 07753, which is 
Neptune and up popped the address, now in Neptune!  Guess what?  The 
house is gone and the "new" Early Childhood Center is THERE!  I'm 
sure Neptune officials knew what was there, prior.  We wanted to 
place a plaque on the spot that used to be his home.  He was killed 
in action and is buried in France.  I'm sure none of the Council in 
Asbury Park knew that Frederick Dempsey's home/place he lived, is now 
in Neptune Township.

In Asbury Park, you still have Stephen Crane House, much to our 
pleasure, to remember him, but nothing remains of one who made the 
ultimate sacrifice and of whom an American Legion Post, formerly of 
Asbury Park, bears his name, in his memory.

Your post made me teary, too!  It's a really GREAT group, with a lot
of thoroughly intellectual people, who clue me in to the "real" Asbury
Park.  I can find something good in anyone!  Everyone is redeemable
and worth listening to, (most of the time).  I don't care if you are a
"newbie" an oldie, a lurker or God forbid, a TROLL.  This is a very
diverse Yahoo Group and we all bring something to the table.  It IS a

Try Home Goods in Neptune, the Christmas Store in Freehold, Pier One,
Ocean Township, etc.  I bought my blue and white candles from the
Christmas Store in Freehold last year, but Home Goods and Pier One
have carried them in the past.  Call, before you waste gas!

Your response begs, what if?  That hasn't occurred yet and please,
name names!  I don't deal in what ifs, just the facts.  I don't use
anonymous sources in my posts, but you're right.  If that imaginary
person protests against the City celebrating Kwanzaa on its' dime, my
answer will come on election day in May.  I will go into the Black
Community on the West Side and ask the voters to speak as they spoke
on Nov. 4th!  The vote speaks volumes!  I'm sure there is someone that
will replace this person easily!  Maybe it'll be ME!

As Columbus Day is important to you, Kwanzaa and its' humble
significance, is important to me.

They're a hell of a lot better, than the mean-spirited, all for self
rich men we had!  As far as Colin Powell, he doesn't represent me,
racially or otherwise, as our ideologies are exactly opposite, but
since Obama WON, everyone wants to claim a piece of him.  He claims
African-American because it's PC, but his background is West Indian.

He's a butt-kisser, than got a rude awakening!  A backhand slap from
the very people he paid homage to.  Now, he, Jesse Jackson, Rev. Al
and Farrakhan, ALL want a piece of this quiet, studious and thoughtful
husband, father and believer in Democracy for all, not just for some.
 He even believes in people like you!  So much for that!  Keep
baiting; that's all you're good for!  Now, go crawl back in the snake
pit you came from!  Sorry, I went off Asbury Park.

He was a "testament" of things to come.  Winning by any means
necessary.  This was also tried this time around, to no avail by John
McCain, whose "lame, dry" delivery,  didn't possess the "punch" to
make his allegations stick!  Sarah "I don't know nuthin'" Palin, tried
too, but her pretty face, curvaceous body and Joe the Plumber, just
weren't enough!  White voters, who knew what time it is, voted with
their feet, for Obama!  Without them, this would still be another
Repug Administration.  God Bless America!

I don't think you're being sensitive at all!  I agree wholeheartedly
that Christmas celebrates the birth of Christ and above all the gifts,
food, etc., I hold on to the true meaning of the day set aside by the
Church, to celebrate Christmas, nothing else!  Kwanzaa can be
celebrated in June, when the slaves learned that word of the
Emancipation Proclamation, meant we were no longer bound by slavery.
We celebrate it to take the emphasis off the commercialization of
Christmas.

We are a so-called Christian Nation, but until racial hatred and
bigotry are a thing of the past, I'll celebrate everyone's difference,
whatever it is.  E Pluribus Unum; out of many, ONE!

I think you missed the point!  July 4th came BEFORE the bottom fell
out of our economy!  I'll argue this point though, the snowflakes that
light up on the utility poles are up now, 2 weeks!  Christmas, YES,
Kwanzaa, NO?  I'll bet there'll be a tree lighting, too!  Not a
problem!  Bradley Beach has a tree, menorah and a Nativity scene.  No
Kwanzaa anything!  I have no idea what Neptune has beside a lit tree.
Ocean Township either but in Allenhurst, the same as Bradley Beach.

Kwanzaa for me, is a personal celebration.  Kwanzaa was a creation to
allow African Americans to celebrate the Black Family, where small
inexpensive gifts are presented and the 7 principles are focused on. 
No more, no less! The Kinara sits on my dining room table with 3 red,
3 green and a black candle in the center.  Liberation colors.  Since
we don't know the region of Africa, we were taken from, those colors
celebrate the red for our blood, the green is for hope and the black
is for our color, created by Marcus Garvey.

It's also okay to NOT want to participate.  St. Joseph's is BIG in New
Orleans too!  The altar is filled with food!  When I moved here, my
mother would mail me a piece of St. Joseph's bread and a Fava bean to
keep in my coin purse.  Legend has it that a Catholic woman with a
Fava bean in her purse will never be broke!  St. Joseph's day, March
19th is not Lent, either!  The Black Indians, famed for their
elaborate costumes and head dress, parade through the local streets
and if they stop and perform at your house, you HAVE to feed them and
give them an alcoholic drink, preferably a cold beer!

I have seen many a parade pass in front of the home I was raised in. 
We had an expansive gallerie, (porch) and half of the neighborhood
would be on it for the grand show!  I feel as though I grew up in
another country!

to be PC!  Oak, I'll bet you have a great time at your house!  I
always look back, to see where I'm going.  Like I said, I celebrate
everything!  Some I don't even understand, but that which I do, I
glorify in it.  Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah and Happy Kwanzaa,
everyone!  I don't mind if I see a Menorah lit up in a public square.
 It means you are celebrating SOMETHING!

After what Americans have been through, we need to celebrate
something!  While we're at it, let's remember those in this group, who
have passed on in the past 2 years.  I really miss them!

FYI:
I passed in front of your house last week and cracked up!  It looked
like Election Headquarters!  Very Patriotic!  I loved it.  Now "over
the top" Christmas tree lights; I'd have to invest in room darkening
shades to get some sleep!  Talk about "Christmas Vacation"!  That film
is a "must see" for me, every Christmas!  I grew up, where there's no
snow, so you see a lot of "over the top" decorations in the South! 
Asbury Park brings out the kid in me!  I ride around endlessly looking
"Ga-Ga" at all of the lights, some tasteful, some that make my eyes
blur!  I love everything about the Fall and Winter Holidays here,
which is why I love this place!  JR:  Stop questioning other Americans
patriotism!  Republicans are good at doing this!

The year was 1966, not 1977.  I don't think Kwanzaa "excludes" anyone.
It's like Pulaski Day that Poles honor their hero in the Revolutionary
War.  All ethnic groups celebrate Christmas in New Orleans,
Catholicism being the dominant religion in that area.  Jews celebrate
it, as do Protestants.  When Catholics go on "retreat", the Jews and
Protestants go on retreat with them!  The Church Calendar determines
what is being celebrated there, right up to Mardi Gras, which is part
of the Church's 40 days before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday.  It's all
religious to me and not the raucus things tourists do on TV!  When in

Mario,
I am honestly FOR the continuation of the Columbus Day Celebration, in
spite of what I know.  When I was learning Spanish in high school,
Columbus was thought of as a "hero"!  Columbus was an Italian in the
employ of the Spanish Government, under Queen Isabella and Ferdinand.
 Another Italian of note, was Napoleon Bonaparte, who was from
Corsica.  The Fascist despot from WWII was Mussolini, who imagined
himself, a King.  All Italian, all famous in their own way.

It has been said, that the Italians ran Asbury Park for decades.  In
some ways, they still do!  Whatever it is that any group wants to
celebrate, that is important to them, is fine with me.  For those who
don't agree with you, that's their perogative!  I'm okay with it.  If
Kwanzaa is being celebrated with private donations, so what!  I
celebrate all 3 Holidays, Hannukah, Christmas and Kwanzaa.  I have a
Menorah, because before I became a Christian, we were Jews, just as
Jesus was.  Kwanzaa is a personal celebration of what it means to be
Black and to be proud of my Heritage.  I agree with John Loffredo's
assessment of Celebrating Columbus.

Now that's what I call celebrating diversity!  PBS ran "Italians in
America", last night then I saw an aerial series on European Countries
and this one was "Italy, Southern Style", which beautifully describe
where you are, history, etc., of places Italians call "home"!  1st
generation Europeans to America, may not have had a lot of education.
 Some only to 8th Grade, but they had dreams for their children and
children's children, not unlike the dream ML King spoke of for Blacks,
so told by the Huxtables on TV.

That was how I came up, so when I see the negative sterotypes of
African-Americans, so prevalent in this area, it's no wonder bigotry
continues to exist in this area, where all you see published in the
newspapers are "drug busts and gun warfare".  My employment brought me
in close proximity to Black Engineers with PhD's who were not
"big-headed" about their status, nor are the Black physicians and
lawyers who reside here.

I just happen to emanate from a large city, that it was the "norm" to
be in the company of Black Professionals, all my life!  Historically
Black Colleges, those places of higher learning exists, from the days
they were the only place, a person of color could attend.  There are 3
in the City of New Orleans; Xavier University, Dillard Univ. and
Southern Univ., New Orleans campus.  I thought everyone had a chance
to strive to "better" themselves.  I still do!  JR:  Stop baiting and
get on with the problems that Asbury Park faces.

I have a copy of the poem in my files, that I read at a leadership
Conference, when I was the State USO Chairman.  The National President
of the American Legion Auxiliary, was our honored guest and after I
had made my presentation on the 21 Counties and their Cookie
donations, cash donations and the # of pounds donated to the USO at
Philadelphia Airport and Ft. Dix, I read the poem.  There wasn't a dry
eye in the audience, when I looked up to finish.  The Director of the
USO in Philly asked if she could use it, too and I sent her a copy,
via email.  That was in 2000!  

I took 3 courses in College English.  2 were required.  The courses
all speak of plaigerism and how it is abused, but a good speaker will
give credit to the author, if they're honest.  Just as some noted
American Historians were recently "outed" for stealing another's work
and not acknowleging them, "A Band of Brothers", "Roots" and a couple
more, I can't remember at the moment, leave a bad taste in my mouth,
thus the attitude, I've taken, when someone knowingly "steals" the
work of another and fails to credit the work of another.

Mario,
I like some of her poetry.  She was interviewed this morning on MSNBC
and the caption under her name had her as an "activist", which she
isn't nor has she ever been.  She is a poet and since she appeared on
Oprah and honored to have read that beautiful poem, she has become
jaded!  There's a poem that she reads all the time, written by an
anonymous person.  She's read it so many times, her audiences think
she wrote it.  How I wish the person who wrote it would acknowledge
their work.  I see lots of posters attributing parts of the poem to
her and I hate her for taking credit for anothers' work.

Really?  A college degree evidently did not make her smart or
informed.  Why does she have her husband, an unpaid, unelected
relative, doing her "dirty" work?  Apparently, she is illegally
allowing her husband to "sit in" while her cabinet is present.  It
must be some kind of intimidating and unprofessional to have your
spouse "overseeing", that NO ONE gets out of line!

I had 5 kids and one husband, too!  I also had day care for the baby
and after school care for one other child.  Expensive?  You bet, but I
had a position that payed well and I could afford it, just like HER!

I had a job that involved using my brain and intelligence to solve
technical problems.  I did system testing of many telephone systems
that all of you enjoy now, but back then, systems such as caller ID,
was not available to the public, as what is now the World Wide Web,
(USENET).  I've been online since 1982 and a UNIX user since 1977, so
with my superior intellect and problem solving skills, I did 20 years
with AT&T Bell Labs, a professional think tank!  On my 15th year, I
became and still is, a Telephone Pioneer and a gold watch with Mercury
on its' face.

Everything I have, I worked for and I'm not ashamed.  My children
think I'm brilliant, as does many of my friends.  I'm a bird watcher
and amateur astronomer.  I have an extensive coin and stamp collection
and I collect white porcelain.  I live a very quiet life, now that the
kids are all gone, but I still love to sit in a stadium and watch a
good football game or track meet.  No, I never entertained running for
office, because my 5 kids and husband, came first!

Wrong, JR!  While a member of the Board of Adjustment from 1997-99, I
sat in on hearings from then owner, Phil Konvitz, about soil
contamination in all of the Springwood area, the stories of how the
leveled land was used as a "dumping ground" for old, discarded
appliances, that had to be dug up by backhoes, just to regrade
properties, for the few town homes over there!

At the time, his associate had come before the board, thinking that
the building of 3 bedroom homes, 2 baths, constituted a change of use,
when in fact, you need only to petition the board, if a complete
change is needed.  The initial permit to build homes, had not changed,
so the new petition, was moot and needn't have come before us!

The fact that the land had old TV's refrigerators, stoves, etc., were
leeching chemicals from rain run-off, which is one reason why it is
designated Brownfield and run-off from Ocean Township that leeches
into Sunset Lake from Seaview Mall negates your statement that Asbury
Park doesn't think beyond its' borders.  It's Neptune, that watches
everything Asbury does, then try to "best" them! That old bastion of
racism, Ocean Grove, has to comply with Neptune Township, since they
became part of it.

Jack,
When Michelle Obama uttered the same phrase of being proud, she was
lambasted for it, but I got what she meant.  After all of the
discrimination, pain and suffering, slaves received before being
emancipated, which lasted only for a few years, the Jim Crow laws,
illegally enforced until 1954, 1964 and 1965, legislated by a
Southerner, from Texas, the South went Republican, became
"conservative", interpreted as "states rights", polarizing whites
against blacks, we became Negroes, Colored, then named ourselves
African-Americans and God knows what!

Integration sent whites into the suburbs in droves, leaving cities to
become crumbling, urban decay!  Now, with gas prices going through the
ceiling, many whites are returning and "gentrifying" the cities and
suburbs, because if you live in the town you work in, it's more
convenient, less stressful and enjoy a shorter commute, cheap public
transportation, almost eliminating the need for costly, gas guzzling
automobiles!  Integration brought diversity, also helped melt away the
myth, that Blacks are as smart and conscientious as anyone else, that
skin tone is just a shade, because I love it when whites put their arm
next to mine in the summer, saying things like, I'm almost your color!

I always reply, that "I'm this shade year round"!  Like Obama, I ask
to see their "dancing" skills, which always evoke laughter, because I
never take that serious!  My Mother taught me also, that all Whites or
anyone who think they're "better" than you, is not the norm.  That
I've met thousands of "good" whites, is an understatement!  Poor and
well off Whites, are good and great people to have as my friend.  I've
met them all and I'm better for it.

I think Obama will pull us all closer in a "win-win" for all of us. 
It's a "slam dunk"!

Yesterday, I tried hard to celebrate my anniversary!  Couldn't go out
of town, due to the election, so we ate out all day!  I wore my
"lucky" outfit, comfortable shoes and a positive attitude, that no
matter who won, I would support.  Much to my astonishment, Obama
actually WON!  Thank God, for people like Michael Brim, who posted the
Monmouth County results, for us!  Mike, Much Love!  In New Jersey, we
are the stepchildren of New York and Philadelphia!  I'm lucky to have
the Weather Channel on my PC to get the "actual" weather, for 07712! 
Sad, huh?  If you don't catch the early morning news on TV, which is
iffy, for this area, I'd never know!

After 39 years, you run out of what to give as a gift, so we shopped
together!  2 dozen yellow roses and champagne.  What a lovely way to
see History happen again, in your lifetime, was the greatest gift!  I
also cherish that little "countdown" clock, you gave me!  I crack up
every day, when I see how many days left until Bush leaves the White
House!  Hilarious!  You're the best friend, a girl ever had!  Your
infectious laughter, makes me glad to be alive!  I'm happy to be in
your world, along with John, Dan, Glenn, the ladies and the many very
smart and intelligent people, who populate this group!

Maybe now, I can lower my shoulders, relax and get back to all those
books, I've neglected.  Maybe I can make huge pots of creamy, winter
chowders, when the cold winds blow outside, as I sip my teas, continue
my daily prayers, for ALL of you, even the negative posters, who troll
here every now and again.

Mario, as  an African American and a mother, I had grand dreams for my
children.  I dream a world, where we can all get along, try to live
together and accomplish objectives where we can all prosper and "make
it" in an often cruel world.  I thought that when I grew up, racism
and bigotry would be a thing of the past.  I always thought that if
you worked hard, you could make it, here.  It's still possible,
because in this great country, the possibilities are endless!

I sometimes wonder why some of us don't make it or live a proper life,
but I know that God is watching and He/She sees all!  Last night, I
found myself surrounded by very happy people, when the final vote came
in!  I saw a young girl, drop to her knees crying and in prayers of
thanksgiving!  The "dream" that Martin King spoke of in his famous
speech, had been realized; that there is room at the table, for ALL of
us.  That we become a "family", instead of fractured groups.  My last
wish is that we all support and work with each other.  It begins with ME!

Tommy,
I'm old enough to be your Mother!  I respect the fact that you are
"native" born, of Asbury Park.  You understand racism and bigotry,
especially being an officer of the law.  You stand up for the little
guy and you feel compassion for others, except our Jim Keady!  Don't
know why.  You can't stand Pallone, but that may be justified!  I
don't know what your relationship is, to the City Council, but I won't
hold that against you.  You are a good son, husband and father, who
cares as deeply for your family as I do mine.  We have similar values,
by our mutual faith and trust in God, because it makes us who we
really are.

I don't know what happens to you when you post to this group! 
Sometimes I think you've lost your mind or have a screw loose!  I KNOW
you are a good person.  I've met you and found you to be a decent man!
 You might be a Republican, but I won't hold that against you!  I've
voted for Republicans before.  Why?  They were the "right" person, as
far as I'm concerned, but you have been unrelenting in your
criticisms.  I used to be a perfectionist, myself.  It goes back to my
childhood, when any embarrassment to my family was a mortal sin!  I
suffer from Catholic guilt!  When I buck the establishment, which I've
done, many times, there's nagging doubt, that in bucking said
establishment, I wonder if I could have done things differently, but
it passes!

I've learned over the years how to say, "I'm sorry" and mean it!  I
get the feeling that you like to get a "rise" out of us, huh?  Makes
your day, don't it?  I'm going to ask that you declare a moratorium on
these rants and let's move on!  We have work to do in Asbury Park.  We
have to make this place a haven for all of us to share and be a part
of.  I love you in spite of yourself, because I know you believe in
what you feel is important to you!  Let's compromise and work
together!  There's no "I" in Team!  God Bless!

So did my son!  He was told by the board of elections in Freehold last
week, that if his voter registration card hadn't arrived by Friday,
last, to come in to Freehold, which he did.  He relates his story here:

When he arrived, there were Sheriffs officers, checking to see if
anyone arriving had outstanding warrants.  Voter suppression, anyone?
 Armed with his drivers license, birth certificate, other photo ID, a
copy of his application to "change" his voting address, in order to
vote in NJ.  (My son had been living in Maryland for the past 5
years).  Copy of his old voter cards, from NJ and Maryland, a lawyer
approached him to challenge his validity by asking several questions,
(he claimed to be from the attorney general's office).  Another lawyer
stepped out into the hallway, asked my son, did he have anyone
representing him, which he said, no.  This lawyer was from the ACLU! 
He asked my son one question, what was your last NJ address before you
relocated?  He answered that he lived with me!  A quick computer check
verified all, I'm stating here.

He was issued a paper by the judge presiding over cases like this one
and was told to take it to his voting district and he would be allowed
to vote.  But this isn't the end.  When he arrived back in Neptune,
they tried to give him a provisional ballot, again!  They tried to
take his paper, given to him by the judge, to which he said, "I'll let
you see the paper, but I'm not giving it, to you!  Some
shilly-shallying went back and forth.  The moment my son started
dialing up Freehold, they allowed him to vote, as you and I did.

A nightmare?  It could have been.  A vote could have been lost, but I
taught my son that perseverence pays off!  His name wasn't on the
voting rolls, although he had changed his address, months before the
election.  Remember, Freehold is run by Republicans and they had
probably "deep-sixed" his change of address!  He is and was, a
registered Democrat.  Had been, since he turned 18, when he also
registered for the draft in 1980, when there was none, but by law had
to register.

When I hear that Obama never served his country, I retort that he
didn't have to, since there wasn't a draft, was a 1979 graduate in
Hawaii, was at Columbia then Harvard, then he served the Chicago
community as an "organizer".  Look at the "machine" the "organizer"
put together to win this election.  He impaled Palin and slaughtered
McSame!

Maybe we can route the Famous Four in Asbury Park, come May!  Keep
Hope Alive!

Now THAT's, what I call "overkill"!  This is what happens when the
government in Washington authorizes surveillance on innocent people in
order to supress the vote!  THAT is intimidation of the highest order.
 Just WHO are they protecting and serving?  Their all-black "riot"
gear reminds me of the "brown shirts" of the Gestapo against the Jews!

In this country, nothing happens to cops who shoot innocent blacks.  I
haven't seen one conviction, yet.  All I have to think of is Amadou
Diallo, who took 41 shots in his own foyer, the cops saying, they
thought his "wallet" was a gun!  Bull Connor has nothing on the "new"
breed of officers who suppress minorities.

Why aren't other stations picking this up?  This looks "made up" to me!
Also funny, it's just 2 white men, narrating this instead of the
authorities being there, which they aren't!  Just looks fishy to me. 
If what the man is saying actually happened, why isn't there a police
presence, which there isn't?

District #4, City Hall.  After signing the book with my name in it, I
was told to see a woman sitting in the seat, with a list, to check my
name off.  What's happening is, they aren't calling the voters names,
like they did in the last election, to announce who is voting!  4
lines;  2 for Dist. 4 and 2 for District 5.  No problem in the voting
booth or the people actually manning the machines.  It was upbeat and
friendly and like Mario, I wanted to do the "Snoopy" dance, too!

Obama, went to Hawaii to say his last goodbyes to his "Toot", Hawaiian
for Grandma, YOU!  Are you Bi-Polar?  Did you know that St. Peter
Clavers Roman Catholic Church had every race, color and nationality in
its' congregation?  Irish, United
Kingdom/French/African/Jamaican/Haitian/Native Americans/African
Americans, Italian, Chinese, Puerto Rican, Dominican, German and
other?  Fort Monmouth, brought many spouses of different countries,
into Neptune Township.  They were my neighbors and fellow parisheners.

That in 1959, Hawaii became the 50th state, but Obama was born THERE
in 1961?  Is he LESS American than you?  His grandparents didn't
emigrate, although his father was an African citizen, in America on a
student visa?  His mother, was a bonafide Caucasian, born of two very
white, people?  Have you seen the photo of Obama and his grandparents,
when he was a student at Columbia University in New York?

Some of the statements you make are predjudicial from my point of
view, as an African-American.  You don't speak for me or any Black
person, I'm aware of.  If you have an opinion, which you have, state
it.  Don't know the origin of your source, nor do I find it reliable.

Oh, really?  I don't speak for Irish, Italian or Hispanics, either. 
Since I don't know what it feels like to be any of them, I let JR
speak for Italians since he is clearly a proud Italian.
As far as ALL black people, regardless of age, are working the system,
tell me where you found THAT information!

The only thing I've ever received from the government is a record of
my birth, marriages, and death certificates, drivers licenses, ALL of
which I've had to PAY for!  My family, the one I originated from and
my marriage have never been ON the system.  By that I mean, welfare,
food stamps or what you call "working the system"!  I attended private
school, so I didn't even get a "free" education, like John McCain, who
attended the Naval Academy FREE and graduated, 5th from the BOTTOM, so
clarify, "working the system", as all us Blacks are want to do, as
you've stated!

ALL BLACKS DO NOT EMANATE FROM THE GHETTO!  I lived in a house with 3
doric columns, spacious lot with 2-car driveway and a carriage house
at the end.  I was so naive that even though I knew kids who lived in
housing projects, most had fathers who died in WWII or was disabled
from the war.  Back in the 50's, the housing projects had just been
built, after the war had ended and I didn't know that the people who
lived in them were poor, until I had grown up!  I was so sheltered,
that I don't connect with a lot of the "coded" language used here,
today, but I GET it!

Everyone I knew, WORKED for a living!  Most of the Blacks I knew were
Catholic, but many non-Catholic kids attended Catholic Schools, for
obvious reasons.  I still know everything I learned from K-12,
learning by rote, then research in high school.  In polite Black
society in New Orleans, I belonged to the Catholic Daughters and my
father was in the Holy Name Society, The CSMC, Catholic Students
Mission Crusade, run by the Jesuits and was Vice-President of the
student body, a quasi-Honor student, because I didn't make the list
ALL the time, but was in the high 20% percentile of my graduating
class, so while my family was "working the system", I was studying!

Am I bragging?  No!  It was expected, for the sacrifice my parents
made and I felt that I owed them that.  I didn't realize how much I
owed them until I experienced "real" life, when I married the first
time. Well, I just didn't appreciate the inference, that ALL of us
Blacks, "work the system"!  I have no clue, as to what "working the
system" is!  The system "worked" us from 1619 until 1964.  What have
we ever gotten in return?  From Jameston, Va. and from Massachusetts
to Oklahoma and Texas, slavery "worked" us!

Little did I know that Asbury Park has all of the symptoms of a
segregated society, urban problems and an inability for all citizens
to share in the vast society, we call America.  I love and work with
all people of all colors, in spite of what I do know and try to ignore
racism and bigotry.

"Old Black people playing the system"?  When did WE ever "play the
system" and please dignify that!  For 450 years people of African
descent, were held in bondage, described as 3/5ths of a person,
according to the Constitution, uneducated on purpose, because those
who managed to "learn" rebelled against being "property", as though a
head of cattle!  You call that, playing the system?  I'll repeat

I find your post, negative, and not being Black yourself, wouldn't
know what we feel or have experienced.  There are millions of Blacks
in this country who have played by the rules, gone to school, served
this country in times of war and not, had their children educated and
wanted the American Dream, while there are over 2 million Blacks
incarcerated in American prisons, while being only 12% of the population.

So explain to me, while whites wrap themselves in the American Flag,
don't serve or try to get out of serving, then think of only
themselves as patriots, as though patriotism cones in only one color?  
Is that the "9-11" effect where only police and firemen are patriots?
 I don't think so!

Where is the so-called "fairness and equality"?  John McCain's family
has "played" the system, allowing America to educate them for free for
100 years, attending the Naval Academy for free!  He became a prisoner
of war, because his flights bombed Vietnamese people!  He is no hero
that I can recall!  He was a "hotdogger", who went on R and R after
his fellow Navy men were killed by his plane, then got himself
transferred to another ship!  Google it and see!

Why is that?  The 9-1 ratio?  What does the Republican Party offer? 
Zilch!  These are former Dixie-Crats, post 1964, turned a once
respected party into the fundamentalists, they are!  They certainly
aren't "Christian"!  They are the Party of the "haves", by any means
necessary!  Christians don't "steal" elections, they WIN them fair and
square.  Explain how the Supreme Court get to decide a Federal election?  

You load it up with white conservatives, who think the only Americans

Spanish and French settled these areas and that Slaves and American

the Party of Lincoln was "hijacked" into what it has become.

History didn't begin in the East, as New Orleans and the Louisiana
Territory was established in 1600, long before there was a United
States.  A place that began as a trading post where frontiersman and
the Indians traded fur pelts and other commodities.  Remember,
Columbus landed on an island, off the Coast of the Americas.

for running, is I know TOO much!  Not having met, I'm at the point

the first time in my life!  Barack Obama, the King of Cool, I'm NOT!

has been in for decades!  

FYI, some blame the demise of Asbury on the 1970 riot, but if this
City had treated Blacks fairly, there wouldn't have been a riot, in
the first place.  I was told by several Blacks that police brutality
was the reason the riots started.  Someone was severely beaten, while
in police custody and that was what sparked the riot of 1970, with a
heavy National Guard presence, along with the State Police.

Just 2 months before the July 1970 riot, 4 college kids, (White), were
shot down in Ohio and several Black College kids were shot by police
at Jackson State, in Mississippi.  Google it and you will get full
details.  Police brutality was rampant back in those days and isn't
too much better, now.

Oak,
Yours is a philosophy, I don't encourage.  Are you a bully?  When you
tell your child to cheat, then what is the lesson learned?  Yeah, I
know that in "real" life, if you don't watch your back, YOUR ideas
will be "stolen" by someone who will take YOUR sweat equity!  That is
what you should tell your son.  At AT&T, someone higher than you
ALWAYS, wanted to put THEIR name on YOUR project!  I saw it happen
many times, but the lesson learned is to get YOUR paper out there
FIRST, then share the news!  I too have had technical memos with
solutions and techniques published first, watching what the others did
in treachery.  I'm a quick learn and good observer.  I KNOW how the
"game" is played, after having it played on me, more than a couple of
times.

Your son, would be better served, in learning and watching first
instead of cheating.  That's how costly mistakes are made in the
technological world, I once lived in.  It gets very ugly too, when
someone knowingly "steals" from you, is all I'm saying.  It's a joy to
"know" stuff, so that I can "walk" someone through to their knowing
what I know.  They know it, forever and leaves me with a gratifying
feeling.  Warm and fuzzy.

I don't always agree with you, but I LIKE what you are saying!
Thank You!  I blame it on the times we find ourselves living in, like
it or not!  The past 8 years of a draconian administration, that
thumps their breast in praise of God's Name, blasphemes the very Name
of God!  As an avowed Christian and Roman Catholic, I feel that
America itself has been thrown on the fire, in sacrifice, to Big Oil,
Greed, loss of reputation, if we ever had one and unwilling
accomplices in 2 wars, not of our making.  Like Rome burning, I smell
the fire of a country that is falling like the Roman Empire!  Whatever
we thought we were, has been ruined by the government itself and that
includes Democrats!

When someone calls me a troll, I take offense and see this as just
another loss of freedom!  It's bad enough that our telephone calls are
being monitored, mail being opened and even computer monitoring! 
Someone said that Asbury Park is a microcosm of the problems of the
United States and they are right!  It's just on a smaller scale.  The
redevelopment reminds me of Washington, DC.  Asbury Partners has given
the redevelopment to a sub-divider, who knows what the City Plan is
and ignored it, like Dick Cheney!

The public that pays property taxes be damned!  Anyone that gets in
their way or speak up, is considered a "menace to them" and THEIR
grandiose plans of what THEY want the City to look like and to hell
with History or what WE thought it should look like!  We have terrible
schools here and that plays out in the test scores.  The parents of
these kids should be up in arms, the board should be asked to resign,
but nobody cares, because these are the kids that are marginalized! 
The proof is in the pudding!

When Blacks were elected to run the City, they proved to be easy to
bribe or entrapped!  Prior to their being elected, you had the same
thing, but no charges were ever brought against them, but the recall
worked!  You had a crooked business administrator in the school board,
who absconded with over $30,000 in school funds, but she retired
instead of going to jail!  Wonder what color SHE was!  Yeah, I said
it, color has a lot to do with how you're still treated in Asbury
Park.  I wish it weren't so, but history bears me out.  Just look at
Springwood Ave. and I need say no more!  Troll my A$$!

Yeah, I said it!  Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation
forever, WAS George Wallace's mantra, until he was felled by an
assassin's bullet and paralyzed for life.  Who took care of him? 
Blacks did!  George Wallace recanted all he said about Blacks,
humbling himself in preparation for his eminent demise!

Where does it say, that Asbury Park is a "Gay" town?  Better look up
the demographics, before you begin "labeling" things.  Asbury is a
town where Blacks are the majority, number one and it IS Gay friendly,
but a gay town?  Why do I see so many kids running around here?  Must
be some heterosexuals around somewhere!  Think before you hang a label
on us!  We're everything here!

Thanks Denise!  Couldn't have said it better!  I came up in an area,
that prided itself on their son, if no one named after them!  A son to
a man in New Orleans is a continuation of one's self, pride, ego,
whatever you want to call it.  Being Roman Catholic didn't help
either.  I would have been thought to be insane, had I named my kids
anything, other than what I named them.  My son is a Junior out of ego
then pride!  My upbringing was post WW2, traditional Catholic, Latin
speaking, Catholic schools, the whole 9!  Too many eyes, reporting my
every move, browbeat me into a submission, you can't believe, which is
why I said, "screw college" and had a "white" wedding that lasted 5
minutes!

For me, higher Ed and a living standard that not only I grew up in,
but a more liberal upbringing for my kids because lets face it,
grownups are "flawed"!  I wanted my kids, born in the mid 60's to
experience the freedom, I never had; as a female or growing up Black!

My kids went to public schools, attended CCD classes until high school
graduation, played in Asbury Park at that damned Palace and boardwalk
that drained my pockets, but what happy kids they were!  The reward
is, I had a 2nd childhood, gathered the neighborhood to me and loved
other peoples children as though they were my own!  I can't believe
what happy adults they are, but like everything, happiness is relative!

No disrespect, but YOU brought it up, inserted what Bradley thought,
according to newspaper accounts and we are just responding, is all!
You just can't have it your way, things being what they are.  Normally
I would agree with you, but the racism exerted by Bradley was allowed
to fester then and it's festering now.  Maybe not as outwardly as
shown in the '70 riots, but it's still here.  I know of only 1 Black,
who is mixed, employed at City Hall and maybe 3-5 employed by the
school board as groundsmen or the City as public utility workers.  1
professional, in a school board role.  You tell me, whether minorities
play any pivotal role in Asbury Park.  Name names if you like!

For some, racism is an ongoing problem he or she has to deal with, but
as for me, life goes on and as far as Obama or McCain having it in the
bag on Tuesday, just think of the video, 'cuz "No One is getting in
the way, of what I'M feeling"!  Just as Obama, a "mixed" kid and
Alicia Keyes, herself a mixed child, this is my future and I'm lovin'
it!  In Asbury Park, we have it all!  Black, white, straight, Gay,
Catholic, Protestant and Muslim!  If that's not diverse enough for
you, I don't know what is!  I'm loving the fact that we all bring
something to the table to share and see if we can improve on it.  As
far as the redevelopment, it is what it is, but I love sharing an
Asbury Park, we ALL have in our minds' eye!

That's a tall order!  It began back in the 60's, mid to late 60's when
I noticed African-Americans, beginning to define themselves
nationally.  Individuals and Black groups began studying different
African languages, Swahili, for one as an example.  The men and some
women began wearing their hair "natural", without straighteners of any
kind, to make them look "white" for want of a better word.

If you possessed any type of education, especially a high school
diploma, you had a better chance of being hired, because most Whites
thought Blacks deserved a chance, instead of having to burn and bomb
out neighborhoods.  After the riots here, many of the corporate giants
were urged to hire locals, especially Blacks needing a chance to get
out of the ghetto.  Public housing is one of the many reasons Blacks
rioted, because they felt trapped in high rise housings, rampant with
drugs and other quality of life crimes, like drug dealing, etc.

You have to ask why drugs were so rampant in Black neighborhoods, when
we don't import anything, nor can you "grow" marijuana in the ghetto!
 No land!  I'm not going to name any agencies I think are to blame,
but drugs were brought into Black areas on purpose.  The "naming" of
Black children use to be a given.  If you had a son, he was named
after his father and if a girl, she'd be named after a popular star, a
relative,  or the most popular name going!

Something happened in the 70's and 80's I can't explain.  Many young
women began naming their kids these outrageously hard to spell and
pronounce names!  I don't mean to be biased but when you "name" a kid,
THEY are going to be stuck with that name for life!  Then you have
those who consider themselves muslims and give their kids a middle
eastern name.  Now, there's anti-American feelings against anyone that
bears names that sound anti-christian.  That's about all I know about
the "naming" process, but the better educated people are, the less
likely, their children will have these hard to spell and pronounce names.

I think you should write it yourself.  It's a beautiful story and I
felt your emotion.  You just took us on a sentimental journey.  I
couldn't imagine the conditions being the same as my experience in the
South.   Funny, it was the Italians, that we shared food with, people
my mother took care of when they got sick and the faith we shared,
which was sacred to us, back then, in the 50's and 60's.

You claim to be conservative, Republican, etc., but I feel your
good-heartedness also.  I read your articles in the Coaster, get angry
at many things you write, but I respect your right to express them.
You're a good father, because you came from good, loving parents.  You
can't love unless you were loved.

No, as a native, you write it, because you lived it and I found it to
be a good read.  I was 27, when I arrived here and didn't understand
what happened here.  I couldn't imagine New Jersey having a racial
problem, because it was in the North-East.  Above the Mason-Dixon
line, as they say.  I know Rainette personally and even though she and
others who rose above living in public housing, she would narrate many
stories about growing up here.

She is one of the most respected women of color in this community,
because she had the ambition to change her life for the better.  I was
a former patient of Dr. Carter and neighbor to his daughter, Beverly,
when I lived "up the hill" in Neptune.  Beverly's husband, Evander
Duck, was my Department Head at Bell Labs, for about a year.  Our
kids, their 2 and my 5 went to school together.  His son went on to be
a pediatrician, following in his grandfather's footsteps.

For many Blacks in Asbury Park, a job at Bell Labs was their way out
of the ghetto, but they spoke of growing up on the West Side with fond
memories.  If you were Black and not a teacher, doctor or lawyer, you
worked for the government, NJ Bell or AT&T.  JR, write the book!

Your version is a version I heard also.  I experienced many of your
experiences, as I lived in a mostly Italian neighborhood.  Everybody
was Catholic, though, with very few Protestants.  The only Jews I
encountered were the Reformed Jews.  Their busiest day was Saturday in
New Orleans.  Everything was closed on Sunday, because everybody was
at Mass or some church service!

Back then Mass, was at least an hour and you had to fast before taking
Communion!  Luckily for us, there was a diner next to Church and a
soda fountain/drug store on the corner.

Were you referring to the Butlers from St. Peter Claver?  James Butler
is a lawyer, here in AP.

So who are you quoting and what do I have to do with it?  I moved to
NJ, October, 1970, 3 months after the riot.  I wasn't here for Asbury
Park's "Glory Days".  In 1960, I was only 15 and in high school.  My
glory days were at Xavier, in New Orleans.  When I arrived, the
downtown was still vibrant and booming.  The furniture store on Main
St., (Bankers), was a burned out shell.  The Army-Navy Store, Pix
Shoes and Bob & Irvings Mens Store, was what's left of that block of
Main St., now, where the Municipal building stands.

Asbury Park has less than 18,000 residents and I had just moved from a
City of half a million!  Are you comparing apples with oranges?  Tell
me something I don't know!  A place as small but famous, is what I do
know of this place.  Ask the Blacks on the West Side, what Asbury Park
means to them!  I would never delight in the failure of a place
struggling to restore itself.

I touched on this with Sharon a while back vis-a-vis New Orleans. You
don't have to live someplace to either want desperately for it to
succeed or to take delight in its failure. Asbury Park is,
unwittingly, the figurative repository for all the hallmarks of the
continuing "great experiment" that is America. Race, class,
capitalism, aspirationalism, regionalism, crime, culture, government,
etc. It's all there in one tiny square mile.

[AsburyPark] Re: Asbury Park v Howell

Don't have a clue!  One of Neptune's former players is playing for
Marlboro.  Don't know which team was discontinued.  I did attend
Neptune's Homecoming last Saturday.  The Class of 1976, was being
honored.  I notice Asbury Park Pop Warner kids out on the street with
buckets, asking for donations.  What's up with that?  3 of my kids
live in Neptune, which is why I know.  Received a call during the
Marlboro game that the parents from Marlboro were fighting with the
refs!  When I was coaching they were doing the same thing, (80's)!
Overzealous parents complaining that their kids weren't getting into
the game!  What can I say?  No sportsmanship?

That being said, I agree with all you've said.  How can citizens hold
their elected officials "feet to the fire"?  Can our officials be
accused of "gross negligence", in NOT holding AP and MM, to the
initial redevelopment, gone awry?  The redevelopment plan seems to
have "run off the tracks"!  What recourse do we have other than
"recalls"?  It just appears to have so many mistakes, the wielding of
power by MM and AP, that they as developers aren't entitled to, so the
question begs; who was paid off?  Should the FBI be called in?

I really think you should publish!  You impress me as being someone
who really cares for the City, didn't want the publicity, but garnered
it, after the way you were "kicked to the curb"!  Very disgraceful! 
Like the Bushes, this City seems to not care for intellectuals; you
know, people who actually KNOW something?

The scientific world both you and I emerged from, makes us all the
more curious, to present FACTS, instead of the "fairy tale" being
dished out to an unknowing public.  New people wouldn't KNOW that
Asbury Park has a Master Plan, its original design and what it's
founder, whose probably rolling over in his grave, would be more
sympathetic, if they actually KNEW the History!

The commercial aspects of Asbury Park were its' boardwalk, amusements
like the Palace and the Swan boats, the City Pool, the movie theatres,
all gone except the Baronet and Paramount, (Is the Savoy intact), were
the draw to weary city dwellers and North Jerseyans.

I only have to say that I live in Asbury Park, anywhere I go and the
questions come like a flood!  I only say positive things but I wished
Asbury had kept a Carousel, its' symbol and draw!  Hey, I can go
anywhere and have cocktails, but when I think of the boardwalk, I see
the monorail, the teacup rides, miniature golf, Madam Marie and the
kitschy stores and candy shops!  I keep my memories locked up in this
tiny head;  of my children who thought Asbury Park for kids, was a
little bit of heaven and of this place being Coney Island, south!

All I know is, I moved here from a very large city, to what I thought
was a piece of New England, only to learn this is a Mid-Atlantic
State!  Looks like New England in November, especially 11 stories up,
where I am; a little bit of Heaven.  Kudos, Werner, for making us
remember why we're here.
