Hello all,

Does anyone know if they are enforcing the parking on the oceanfront in the
winter? I parked by the Berkeley on Thursday to go to a show at McLoone's and
paid for an hour, then went into the show and found out that the performer I
came to see didn't start until after that time, so I had to rush back down
before the hour was up to put more money in the meter. Needless to say, and I
know they have been there for several years now, but paying for parking in
Asbury Park sucks. I would try to find a free space, but as a woman alone,
didn't feel like it was safe to walk a few blocks in the dark. How much is a
parking ticket in AP these days? I had to set an alarm on my phone to make sure
I didn't miss the time. Very frustrating.

Yep. That and the pretty dreadful dressing rooms and backstage facilities. Acts
are definitely not clamoring to play Convention Hall and that is not likely to
change when there are so many other options around.

Unfortunately, Convention Hall is one of the worst sounding concert venues in
the country. That's probably the main reason for the sparse amount of shows
presented there.

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: scher

2007-04-06 Thread shuvee
The state of Convention Hall is a big problem. It does not even have proper
dressing rooms. Also the sound is not up to today's standardsUnfortunately
few bands are nostalgic about Asbury and want to play thereThey want to
play where they can make the most money and be comfortable in a
state-of-the-art facility. That is not available at Convention Hall. Perhaps it
can be retro-fitted but the problem is, you are likely talking millions of
dollars to bring it up to standardAlso parking in the area is somewhat
difficult, and many people do not want to walk long distances from their cars
in Asbury. I have been going to concerts in Asbury for 30 years and continue to
do so, but I have my doubts about Convention Hall ever again being a viable
rock facility. That doesn't mean they can't do the occasional show and also
have other things there, like trade shows and the like. I think the building
can still be made viable, but as a rock hall, maybe not...

The Paramount, on the other hand, has great sound, and, though it needs work,
is in better shape than the Hall. I agree with Gary that it would be nice for
the powers that be to embrace events like Wave Gathering and Taste of Chaos
that draw people to the city. I remember in 2002, I believe, after the Elvis
Costello concert, which sold out Convention Hall, my friend and I emerged to
find out that the police had ticketed a bunch of cars (including ours) for
parking in a restricted zone (supposedly the curb was painted yellow on Ocean
Avenue). Only problem was, there was no curb left and the paint had faded to
such an extent that you couldn't even tell if it was yellow in certain places.
He fought the ticket and it was dismissed, but my point is, why was it
necessary to issue at least 50 tickets that night, which left a bad taste in
everyone's mouth after what should have been a pretty positive experience?
Reminded me of the old WNEW shows on the beach when the cops would go up and
down and ticket hundreds of cars for parking meter violations. I know, I know,
they were within their rights to ticket people, but I just thought it was
unnecessary overkill.

Hinge,

But places like the Starland Ballroom have done incredible in today's
market. Convention Hall and Starland aren't too far apart in size.
The difference is that one has got state of the art equipment and the
other is falling apart.

I believe the past practice of discounting beach fees for residents was challenged by the state Office of the Public Advocate, sometime in the late 1980s. I will have to double-check that but it happened about the same time that there was a successful suit blocking towns from selling male and female badges.

How about residents and homeowners get on the beach free and everybody else pays? This issue seems to come up in almost every beach town and for some reason the towns usually not only refuse to let local residents on the beach for free but refuse to offer a discount as well.Belmar’s got an interesting offer for CURRENT members of the armed forces – they get on the beach for free but once they’re out of the service they have to pay! You’d think it wouldn’t be so bad for towns to let the town residents on the beach for free considering our taxes are paying for the beach cleanup, security, badge checkers, lifeguards, etc.

Re: [AsburyPark] convetion hall

2006-01-29 Thread shuvee

Convention Hall is a difficult building. The lighting, sound and the dressing rooms are all sub-standard in today's marketplace. It would take a very substantial investment of money to make the Hall an attractive concert venue for artists, I believe. Artists don't care about playing Asbury Park, with very few exceptions. They care about playing someplace where they are going to have the amenities that they have come to expect. Until that investment is made in the Hall, I don't see them drawing dozens of shows. The market is too competitive in this area.

I don't really think parking is a big issue. For the sold-out shows that have been at the Hall, from Springsteen to Jimmy Eat World to Bon Jovi, people have been willing to walk a distance to get there. I never really heard anyone at a major show complain about the parking. I'm not saying that it doesn't affect the residential neighborhoods; I am merely speaking from a concer-goer's point of view.

He changed the name, briefly, to Vinyl, but it was the Pony for some time and I do believe it made money under Nasar, at least for a time. They were booking different acts than were booked when Butch and Jack owned it; saw Soul Asylum, the Ramones, Courtney Love, etc. there, and those were all big shows. It was during that period that they started doing the outdoor shows after Mrs. Jay's had closed and they took over that area. I think it was called the "Stone Pony Big Top," at one point.

Story will be in tomorrow's APP about Harry's. Dispute between Dorrian and Marshall Koplitz looks like it's going to court. Dorrian claims he plans to reopen shortly. We shall see.

As far as I know, John Dorrian still owns the liquor license on Harry's and has the lease on the building, which is owned by Sitar.

GANNETT NEW JERSEY Asbury Park is in South Asia's corner.

A group of Asbury musicians will get together beginning at 2 p.m. Jan. 23 at Asbury Lanes in Asbury Park for the "Asbury Cares" concert, to benefit victims of the South Asian tsunami of Dec. 26.

Vinnie Lopez and Steel Mill, Billy Ryan and the Bluescasters, the Sonny Kenn Band, Blue Plate Special, Rock n' Rhythm, Streetheart, Stormin' Norman Seldin, Leon Trent, Mr. Popeye, Patsy Siciliano, Danny Walsh, Johnny Petillo, Anita Ferrer, Pat Guadagno & the Candle Brothers, Amanda Cashman, Dusty Micale and others will perform.

The event will be emceed by Nicky Addeo, also known as the "Bangs Avenue Kid."

"These people from Asbury Park embody the various styles of Asbury music," Addeo said. "Leon Trent is R&B, Vini Lopez and Sonny Kenn are rock and we're attempting to find a gospel group. The show embodies all of the various music styles of Asbury Park, not just one specific style."

Beneficiaries of the concert will be AmeriCares and/or Relief International. The allotment had not been determined as of press time.

"I just got off the phone with (family friend and Asbury Park native Danny DeVito) and he suggested Relief international," Addeo said. "He's looking to get the most bang for the buck."

Tickets for the show are $20 and can be purchased in advance by sending a check or money order to Asbury Cares, PO Box 583, Asbury Park, NJ, 07712.

Asbury Lanes is located on 209 Fourth Ave.

Re: [AsburyPark] Harrys new owner

2004-12-22 Thread shuvee

Folks, I was under the impression that Sitar still owns the Harry's building and John Dorrian still controls the liquor license and lease on the space and is just sub-leasing to the new owners. I think it's a bit premature to judge what is going to happen at Harry's and think they should be given a chance. However, I will say that if the continue to try to book bands in the Springsteen tradition, they will fail. The Stone Pony has not been able to thrive while booking only Bruce-related bands and has had to expand its bookings in an attempt to reach a younger audience. The audience that goes out to see/hear John Eddie, Boccigalupe, Steel Mill Retro, etc. etc. does not go out three to four times a week (with some rare exceptions, and I think I know all the of them! :)  ). They should be trying to get a hip younger crowd like the people who went there when it first opened

This is not meant as a criticism of any of the above bands or band members, many of whom are good friends of mine. I love their music but Harry's, I think, should be a different type of place. Just my rambling $.02.

[AsburyPark] Light of Day concerts at the Stone Pony this weekend

2004-11-05 Thread shuvee

Hi all. Tonight, tomorrow and Sunday are the annual Light of Day concerts at the Stone Pony, to raise money for the Parkinsons Disease Foundation and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Last year more than $100,000 was raised and donated to these two groups following the shows.

Tomorrow's show is sold out but there are plenty of tickets for tonight's show and Sunday's. Tickets are $50. For a complete line-up of the artists performing, go to www.lightofday.org.

Hope some of you will stop by for some great music for a great cause. I will be selling raffle tickets by the front door and there are some terrific prizes, including basketball tickets, autographed items and photos, so please, if you come, stop by and purchase a raffle ticket or two. Last year the raffle alone raised close to $7,000 and we're hoping to raise at least that much again this year.
