[AsburyPark] Re: Asbury Park, Europe & the future

Yep ... good post. Upward and onward. The lifeguards are much busier now than
five years ago ... ... what did the Captain bark at me once when I was on
the beach about two years ago in July ... ASBURY IS BACK! . Yep it is ...
if all we can do know is cry about some copper panels on some buidling ... this
is good ... if this is the main issue this week ... .

[AsburyPark] Re: Asbury Park does not need a new form of government!!!!!!!

2012-03-07 Thread Mark D
This has to do with the petition from the Southwest side. The petition had
sought to divide the city into six wards with nine council members, one to be
elected from each ward and three to be elected at large. The mayor would be
elected directly by voters

People are still walking around town trying to get more signatures.

A better option would be staggered terms. However, the council does not want
this. It was brought up at the last election, and died once they took office.

ASBURY PARK — A petition initiated by a resident to change the city's form of
government to a ward system was found to be insufficient by 335 signatures,
officials announced Monday.

City Clerk Stephen Kay reported 950 of the 2,225 signatures were disqualified
for several reasons. The principal reason was 497 signers were discovered to
not be registered voters. Kay also found many signatures invalid because of
questions of addresses. For example, 50 signatures were rejected because the
signers resided outside of Asbury Park. Two petitions were also found to be
signed by juveniles.

The end result was that only 1,275 of the petition's 2,225 signatures were
found to be valid. According to state law, 20 percent of city voters must sign
the petition to change the government. In the case of Asbury Park, where there
are 8,050 registered voters, the petition required 1,610 valid signatures and
fell 335 short.

Kay also reported that the petition failed to specify whether the proposed
government will be subject to nonpartisan or partisan elections. In a
statement, Kay wrote that the designation of nonpartisan or partisan elections
is a crucial piece of information necessary to clearly inform the voters the
true purpose of the matter being put before them.

The petition had sought to divide the city into six wards with nine council
members, one to be elected from each ward and three to be elected at large. The
mayor would be elected directly by voters.

Currently, the city has five council members elected at large every four years
with the council electing one of the five members to be mayor.

The petition was initiated by Duanne Small, 42, who said it is necessary
because the city residents need better representation. Small said he was
informed he had 10 days to resubmit the petition to the city.

"We will continue to get more signatures to meet the 335 (number) that is
needed. We have 10 days from (Tuesday). We're also going to look over the ones
that were found invalid because we believe some of them might be good," Small
said.

Mayor Ed Johnson was not available for comment.

The team is OFFICIALLY a CNJ Group 1 dynasty

I didn't miss a home game this year, got to 1 away game. I have watched their
games since they won the first one with Coach Don, and I didn't think this
years team would do it, but man did they look crisp against a good Florence team

The parenting in our city (or lack thereof) I truly believe is the root cause

Doesn't it all come back to inattentive parenting? If you kid has 10 bikes in
their backyard and you don't question you child about it, then something is
wrong. I see boys riding girls bikes and big kids riding bikes that are way to
small for them all the time. One time when I was working at Second Life Bikes,
and kid came in with a bike freshly painted with black spray paint. I asked him
where he got it. He said it was sitting on the curb, so he just took it. I told
him that a spray painted bike is a tell-tale sign of it being stolen. He acted
nervous and would not look me in the eye. Repeat that over and over in our
city. Parents are casting a blind eye to their kids unlawful behavior.

One measure we, (as the potential victims) can take is to make sure we write
down the bikes serial numbers

I have all of my bikes serial numbers along with corresponding pictures of them
as well

I would never leave a bike locked up outside of a fence on your property, 2 of
ours were locked up to our deck prior to having our fence put up, we came home
to find a cut lock and no bikes

The police keep great records of bikes reported stolen, and its a THICK book

The one thing I will say, is if you see a kid riding your stolen bike, they
will give it back quickly if you approach them

Yeah, I had parts stolen off my bike a few years ago. Last night, a neighbor of
mine who constantly makes the mistake of locking her bike to a telephone pole
also had her front wheel stolen, and it's her only transportation.
What can be done about this? Obviously parents aren't wondering where their
kids are getting all of their bikes and bike parts.
Maybe the city should require everybody to register their bikes, just like they
do with dog licenses. If a kid is caught riding a bike without a sticker,
impound it. If it's found to be stolen, arrest the little shit heads.

[AsburyPark] Re: Asbury Park historical society pushes to salvage Baronet Theater artifacts

2010-11-12 Thread cathrynbe2002
Interesting, thanks for posting.

Did anyone go inside during 2006 when it was open? Seems like if "extensive
renovations" were done in 2005-2006, that, in four years, it wouldn't have
fallen apart...

Cathryn.

>From the article:

During the two decades under then-owners Walter Burns and Maurice Roberson, the
theater opened intermittently starting in 1986. Developers Dennis Dubrow and
Patrick Fasano bought the theater in December 2005 and reopened it for the
summer after extensive renovations in July 2006. The following summer Fasano
and Dubrow sold it to the city’s master redeveloper.

The theater never opened again. Years of decay took its toll on the art deco
building that stood neglected and underutilized while the city limped along in
a stalled oceanfront redevelopment.

"I liked the Baronet because it was the oldest theater in town," Crawford said.
"It was just a nice comfortable theater."

The Baronet, Stine said, is one of many historically significant buildings the
city continues to lose to redevelopment and neglect. "This has been an ongoing
problem in the city for decades actually â€" demolition through neglect," Stine
said.

2008-11-26 Thread sharon_b283
In "YOUR" country? What are we, "chopped liver"?

Yes, Germany was first and Queen Victoria introduced it to the Brits
through her German husband Prince Albert, later introduced into the
United States, during the Victorian period. However the "customs" of
Christmas evolved, the overcommercialization of one of the Churches
most sacred days cannot be overemphasized. For me, Good Friday, is
the most sacred of all Holy Days. "For God so gave the world, His
only begotten Son". Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday,
ring true for me, followed by Pentecost.

No need to argue over who started what, because like a child, I still
believe in Santa Claus or the very idea of him.

it's on the owner's property, not public.

It's the season and real smart they can turn the arcade into a
shopping/entertainment center - in December.

And it should be good for downtown, who has to learn and take
advantage of the boardwalk draw and feed off of it.

That's FREE marketing for the downtown and the rest of the city.

Learn to capitalize on it.

A guy once had a pizzeria. He first complained that McDonalds moved
across the street (must of meant he was in a good spot, right). He
thought it would hurt his business.

In the long run, his business increased and he gained additional
parking from the lot and additional traffic

get it?

Hmmm I am not sure where this news aired from, but my first
question would be:

Should we really be out there singing: "On the First Day of
Christmas, Ma-Tola-Gave-To-Us, a Christmas Tree inside the Car-Rou-
Sel?

Shouldn't this be a CITY activity, not a DEVELOPER activity?

Happy Festival of Lights, Tommy! Yep, I get it.

Yes - Christmas Trees.

You see, Christmas is also a cultural part of America. A recognized
federal holiday. Many Jews who are proud of their American Culture
take part fully in the American tradition of Christmas, without the
religious part of the celebration.

They wouldn't dream of casting an insult by changing the name of
Christmas.

Better to be inclusive and be part of the American holiday.

There has historically been opposition to the custom of the Christmas
tree because of its alleged pagan origins. Thus, Oliver Cromwell
preached against "the heathen traditions" of Christmas carols and
decorated trees. As pastor Henry Schwan of Cleveland OH in 1851
decorating what was likely the first Christmas tree in an American
church. His parishioners condemned the idea as a Pagan practice.

There are various legends regarding the origin of the Christmas tree,
often relating to Saint Boniface. Thus, in one version, Boniface
disrupted a pagan child sacrifice at an oak tree, flattening the oak
with a blow of his fist. A small fir sprang up in place of the oak,
which Boniface told the pagans represented Christ.[1] In some
accounts, Martin Luther is credited with adding lights and decoration
to fir branches traditionally hung from ceilings.[2]

Condemnation of the Christmas tree as pagan has been based on a
passage in Jeremiah,

"Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not
dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of
the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They
deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with
hammers, that it move not." (Jeremiah 10:2-4, KJV).

Christmas traditions in general have often been associated with
paganism in 19th century scholarship. Robert Chambers in his 1832 Book
of Days notes that the festivities of Christmas originally derived
from the Roman Saturnalia , had afterwards been intermingled with the
ceremonies observed by the British Druids at the period of
winter-solstice, and at a subsequent period became incorporated with
the grim mythology of the ancient Saxons. Two popular observances
belonging to Christmas are more especially derived from the worship of
our pagan ancestors—the hanging up of the mistletoe and the burning of
the Yule log. Regarding the Christmas tree itself, Chambers notes that
it seems to be a very ancient custom in Germany, and is probably a
remnant of the splendid and fanciful pageants of the middle ages.
Other traditions relating to Christmas that may derive from Germanic
pagan practices include the Christmas ham, Yule Goat, stuffing
stockings, elements of Santa Claus and his nocturnal ride through the
sky, and elements of Alpine folklore.[3]

There are also some accounts that place the earliest Christmas trees
in the Baltic (variously Estonia or Lativa), while in actuality the
custom was introduced there in the 1920s.

On Friday night at 6 in the Grand Arcade between Paramount and CH
there will be a performance by the NJ Rock n Roll Chorus.

Try to find the nice young lady from Howell singing 1st Soprano.

I imagine they will be singing Christmas songs, but they just
recorded an a copella verson of Born to Run. Considering the venue,
I'm guessing they will sneak it in.

I hope you enjoy.

[AsburyPark] Re: Asbury Park plans tree-lighting for Sunday

2008-11-25 Thread Jack Pitzer
Perhaps it would be a good move, from a marketing perspective, to just call
them "Holiday
trees, wreaths, and garlands"
If you think about the overwhelming retail aspect of Christmas, I doubt that
people who
are trolling around the mall are thinking about the baby jesus when they are
surrounded
by decorations.
Actually, if there were a Jesus, and he were alive today, he'd probably want to
collect royalties from all the merchandise sold in his name.

Your modesty is appealing Michael, but Democrat voter turnout in
Asbury Park is ultimately your responsibility.

You deserve to have the credit. Job very well done.

Besides, if Democrat voter turnout had been small, you know I'd be
blowing you up right now ;-)

[AsburyPark] Re: Asbury Park v Howell

2008-10-19 Thread justifiedright
Howell - 20.
Asbury Park - 12.

Great game.

They may play again in a post season game in AP; I'll let you all
know if it happends.

After the 1st kick-off there were 4 officials on the field, and they
were going to keep time there. The coach of AP objected and wanted
official time kept on the scoreboard, which takes an official off the
field. It's his right to insist, but it does take a pair of eyes away.

The next play when there was 3 officials, there was a Howell TD.
Looked to me like he was out of bounds (AP players all pointing to the
spot I saw), and ironically, the official keeping time would have been
in position to catch it were he down there.

Howell was leading 14-0 right before the half. Ran some plays when he
could have sat on it (probably trying to get kids plays). Lost the
ball and AP scored. Very exciting.

Late in the forth it was 14-12 with Howell drinving. 4th down and 8
to go at mid field. Most would have punted. Howell completed a pass
play for the 1st that eventually led to a TD.

Game ended exciting too, with AP driving. Could have tied the game.
Pass intercepted by Howell with short time left.

This is Howard Cosell signing off

Don't have a clue! One of Neptune's former players is playing for
Marlboro. Don't know which team was discontinued. I did attend
Neptune's Homecoming last Saturday. The Class of 1976, was being
honored. I notice Asbury Park Pop Warner kids out on the street with
buckets, asking for donations. What's up with that? 3 of my kids
live in Neptune, which is why I know. Received a call during the
Marlboro game that the parents from Marlboro were fighting with the
refs! When I was coaching they were doing the same thing, (80's)!
Overzealous parents complaining that their kids weren't getting into
the game! What can I say? No sportsmanship?

[AsburyPark] Re: Asbury Park court swamped by parking tickets

2008-09-03 Thread Jack Pitzer
I have to agree with Gary. The parking meters would be good for the city if
they were
properly implemented, but they weren't. It was confusing. And it's even more
confusing
that you can park in a lot for free, but you can also park in a confusing paid
parking space
, potentially screw up and wind up with a $26 ticket.
This whole situation is just bad PR for AP.

I don't think it's wrong to be critical of the way the system was
implemented. This is a system, which people have shown quite a bit of
confusion in using - one that had at least one local town (Belmar)

Well, tonight and the other day, the free lots were filled by the WB/
Tonight, I paid .80 to park by north beach.

Went to Teak in Red Bank last night. Parked for free. I think it ended
at six pm the fees.

I only had one ticket in red b - parking in a stall backward - uts
illegal in RB. Make that 2 - I read ended someone.

Years ago, the lot behind the pony and the old triangle lot were
privately owned and the city had meters.

Lots of things could be done - like making one of those lots or
portions of employee parking only or better yet - don't let the
employees drive in.

The pay stations are hard to read at night unless they are under a
street light. I was at the one tonight at the north corner of the
sunset ave pav/ 6th ave. The person on front of me couldn;t pay cuase
the machine was having troublr ccepting her paper money. They were
trying to pay 2.50 for five hours.

It's not just AP, unless the pay stations are in enclosed garage or
lot, its hard to know how to, if you and how much.
But, I think its a great idea.

The city failed with this parking system on so many different levels.
First off, they should've waited till next summer, or until more of the
renovation is
complete.
Secondly, it's confusing people left and right. And if you park too far away
from the
machines, and don't know that you have to pay to park, and didn't note the
space number,
you have to walk all the way back to your car. Strike 2.
Finally, there is no communication between the city and MM, because MM has free
lots at

[AsburyPark] Re: Asbury Park court swamped by parking tickets

2008-08-31 Thread Jack Pitzer
The city failed with this parking system on so many different levels.
First off, they should've waited till next summer, or until more of the
renovation is
complete.
Secondly, it's confusing people left and right. And if you park too far away
from the
machines, and don't know that you have to pay to park, and didn't note the
space number,
you have to walk all the way back to your car. Strike 2.
Finally, there is no communication between the city and MM, because MM has free
lots at
the SP, Casino and the Wonder Bar. People seems to be parking in those, rather
then use
the pay spaces. I'd do the same thing. Nobody is watching those lots.
This is already generating lots of brand new bad publicity for our city. It
should. If you get
a $26 ticket because the system is confusing, you are gonna tell all your
friends about it.
I think the city should cancel all of those tickets that were issued and fix
things.

Belmar actually tried a parking meter system like that a year or two but
removed it in favor of the old system of one meter per space because too
many people complained about not understanding where they should be
paying for their spot.

New signs would definitely be helpful as there are areas where you
really have to look quite a distance to find the machine to pay.

2008-08-31 Thread Jack Pitzer
To top it all off, not only are people getting ticketed all over, but they are
confused by the
new parking system. A parking system should not require a learning curve.
Also, why pay when you can park in the new lot's that MM built which aren't
being
monitored at all? Tons of people are, behind the WB, across from the SP and by
the
Casino.
Makes no sense at all, and we are paying the price for it.
This parking fiasco is a terrible way for AP to end an otherwise positive
summer.

[AsburyPark] Re: Asbury Park Metal Container Shops

2008-07-25 Thread New Beetoap
There are places that protect scenic and historic views. Didn't
anyone think of that before putting up those shacks?

I've always appreciated when I have good photo opportunities. That
fortune teller place is known around the world and certainly should
have been protected.

Its changed for the worse. It used to be a white building and the
one nextdoor (bandstand) was orange. A great classic Asbury image
from the boardwalk. Now its blue with a yellow building behind it as
viewed looking NW.

Your point about taking that picture is a good one.

That was my impression too, they are awful. This was brought up here
before they were even put in. Seems really cheap and tasteless. They
block the views down the street too.

Madam Marie is really squeezed in now so I cant get a good classic

Zanadu looks like it should be moved to Port Newark. It'd fit in perfectly

While the shops in LB (and AP) may be for "some people" - the beaches
aren't and won't be.

I've sat in the middle of Pier village on the beach - and it's
probably the most diversified beach in M county. And if you want to
see how the women from South America wear a bikini - that's the place
to go.

Drive through Sea Bright - now that's really excluding some people.
And I'm one of the some (unless some other "one" invites me...then I
have to decide if I realy feel like being proper all day...or if I
want to hear about someone else
s "problems"...)

That's another point altogether! I think that the thought that went
into the initial design of the street plan was visionary. You have to
admit that the wide streets at the oceanside do allow some great
circulation to the uppper blocks in town,(of which I'm a beneficiary!)
If you compare Asbury design to say the obstruction of the oceanfront
in Long Branch you can see what extreme building conveysthe beach
is only for some people...for example.

You raise some good points. I had only been thinking about the facade
factor when I initially posted. Open spaces between the pavillions
does make sense if you are keeping with historical design standards.
It makes additional sense if you keep in mind environmental problems
of today. Thanks.

As a city planner what are your thoughts on having anything in those

reasoning behind the flared streets between Ocean and Kingsley that
correspond to those spaces. Is it worth it lose that air flow and those

The funny part of the xmas trees was my firend's brother went to
Brooklyn to buy a "trailer" of trees. When they delivered them and
started unbundeling them, they weren't exactly full.

So we took wire and sold "2 for 1" tie them together for one good tree
and the rest we chopped up and made grave blankets or wreaths.

Things you can't learn in school.

me of Collingswood Auction. There were little shops run by Christians,
Jews, and Muslims, and they were all selling each others icons. Didn't
see many Buddahs or Kalis, though...

I just got bike from my night time trip to ralph's.

A cop told two people with dogs to leave and a kid on a bike

I think after 9 pm it should be ok

A couple signs on what IS coming next should be splurged on. A nice
big waterpark sign, some temp lighting om the closed buildings would
help as well. Lot of people still have no idea waht is going on.

Also, this is summer. If you already have an operating business on the
BW, BE OPEN at night.

A boardwalk business is not meant to be open from 10-5pm. It's a
BOARDWALK. It;s SUMMER, Be open to at least 10 pm.

Even it's DEAD.

There were 20 people playing golf. 20 x 5 = $100. 100 x 10 hours -
$1,000.

Get it?

Surprised MM hasn't put in SOH = standard operating hours.

Self-interested speculation?... quality rather than quantity...?

Perhaps Asbury Park, Asbury Partners and MM need a history lesson.

from the Chicago Plan website
... there was too much ugliness and squalor. The planners blamed this
condition on uncontrolled development and self-interested speculation.
The Plan maintains that the issue facing Chicago is no longer
expansion but conservation, quality rather than quantity of life. Time
and again, it declares that a city's social, cultural, and financial
well-being are inseparable. "The constant struggle of civilization is
to know and to attain the highest good," it states, "and the city
which brings about the best conditions of life becomes the most
prosperous." Lack of planning had wasted time, effort, and money,

I'll go out on a limb here - the STUPIDEST thing MM can do is to NOT put the

The problem was not just the isolation in the winter, but the isolation in the
summer.

And don't forget, bringing events back to CH year round - like the old days.
The off
months were ceramic shows, boat shows and more. Ceramic shows were the almost
the
best weekends of the year and that was around Feb - march if i can think back
that far. It
wasn't kids or 30's somethings. It was busloads and busloads of seniors getting
off at CH
or Michael's and eating.

What creates memories is a starting point with a family To assume that a
childless couple
will be buying a condo is simply wrong and could be what didn't exactly help
anyone's
condo sale s in AP. Example - an empty nester coouple from Morriss Plains -
retired.
Grandkids. House in Florida, Morris Plains, kids in PA and Virginia. They want
to summer
in AP most of the time, keep house in Morris Plains and head to Fl in October.
They have
$1m to spend. Why were they turned off?
A) they were trying to accomoodate their lifestyle (grandchildren, kids..)
B) unable to select a unit or had limited choice -take it or leave it
C) unsure of what the grandkids would do (pool was a real plus)
d) time frame for development

One of these days there's going to be a huge outlet center off 66 and the
parkway. You
have a few new motels that sprung up from the collingswood circle to 66. You
hvae a few
more that want space. Seaview Sq is continuing to grow. Burlingtong going in
plus a few
more not named, Value City out. Burlington taking part of the old lowe's..

I would guess MM has a good idea fo what THEY think will work and how they will
make it
pay off. IF there is one smart old time operator on the BW, they will be able
to take
advantage, keep to tradition and do very, very well,

There's a way to make it kid friendly were it doesn't turn out like seaside nor
as kid
friendly as Point.

Grandma grandma grandma take me to thelet's see what MM comes up with,

PS: My son makes a good martini

You took the words, right out of my mouth! These 34 to 40 somethings,
don't want anything, but "singles" stuff and their little martini bars
and beach houses! I came to the boardwalk, to have a kosher hot dog
and REAL lemonade! The fresh air and the funny looking fat/skinny and
buffed boys and girls, taking the surf! The sounds of summer and the
isolation in winter, when you had the BW to yourself! Would see dogs
being walked, a lone runner or goofy me, walking the boards. Now, you
have to contend with those who think they "knowitall" about US! For
those who remember miniature golf and the cutesy rides for kids, go to
seaside Hts., there's nothing here for YOU! Chuck, it would please me
so much to see just one iota, one thing; a carousel! Is that too much
to ask for?

Glenn,
You're absolutely right! Why doesn't the hypocrisy of it all, NOT
surprise me? At the 110th Anniversary, thing, the Carousel was used
for the cake, but still, no carousel in the city, except in our minds,
which I lost a long time ago! My mind, that is! Well, the snow is
falling and AP schools are open, as usual! Seems they'd give these
kids ONE snow day, since they haven't had any all year! As far as the
Chamber, it's just a popularity contest, as far as I'm concerned.
Name me one member, no 2, that live here! A lot of what goes on here,
is just so "window dressing"! Too many restaurants, with no real
business, here. Well, at least Tommy is consistent, with being a
Republican; seems he owns an oil business, here! Read it in the
paper. Weldon's pensions suspended. Have mixed feelings over that.
His firemen's pension, shouldn't have been involved. Seems he earned
that. He still has his family. Sorry folks, they shouldn't have to
pay for his mistakes. Alright, I've donned my flame-retardant, suit.
 Flame, away!

These are just thoughts, i have no idea if they're true. Maybe the
freehold mall has their double decker carousel becasue they can afford it?
Does the Freehold Mall bring in a large profit? From the area, and the
percentage of high end stores, i'm guesing yes. It may have been an
attraction, something done becasue they could afford to do it. Weather it
makes money or it doesn't, it brings in people. But that could only have been
done becasue the mall in general brings in enough "extra" money.
Maybe Monmouth doesn't do well enough to spend on such an attraction.
One that may not give back much.

Exactly. I wish it were different. Do you really picture a boardwalk
filled teens and screaming kids, while there are million dollar condos only
feet away on the other side of Ocean ave? I highly doubt it. But again, we
will have to wait and see what happens.
As the post up top mentions, MM didn't mention anything about a water

major or else they would have had it ready. Maybe it wasn't mentioned beasue

MM is not interested in history. If Ap could survive on history there
would be no need to do anything to the buildings on the BW except some
paint. The Boardwalk that we knew is HISTORY. In someways I agree that
we need to move on to bigger and better things, but MM cannot forget the

I think the boardwalk idea at Monmouth mall was based off of AP. There
intended to be a carousel in the center food court area. accross from what is
now Old Navy? You can see the round shape on the floor, and the circular

Actually - there are no Carousels left just a Carousel House.

There were at one time 3 Carousels around Wesley Lake; 1 in OG and 2
in AP.

I predict that the Casino Carousel House will be turned into a food

Considering that the building always had a for sale sign on it but was
never sold again and NOTHING was ever done to save it AND the city
declared it a disaster (after all these years)AND it does NOTHING
for the TAX base...

Start Over.

Build something that repsects the park and the immediate area. - It
will have undergound parking, ocean or lake views and park views.
There's a real popular park (or 2) in NYC where people pay a ton to
live across from. Collect taxes vs doodling.

DING.

Why not demolotion the Metropolitan and build something identical but
new in its likeness. A Metropolitan style hotel with up to date
ammenities might do very well. My guess is the Charms is more worth
saving structurally.

I know that isn't ideal to the preservationists but it is a happy
medium. It also takes into account that this stuff doesn't take place
in a vacuum, it requires money.

NOticeably absent from any of these discussions on saving buildings is
an accurate assessment of the cost to restore and what the payback
would be. I know payback isn't important for some but it matters for
anyone who is going to put one nickel into a project.
