Whoa... No hard feelings here..  And nice background info there
about yourself!  Your posting name looked different to me for some reason.
Sorry...  My yahoo i.d. sometimes comes up different on my end.  So does my
messenger, it's strange.  Yes, I know you're not new.  However, I DID
NOT post a question asking if a new museum should come to be.  I simply
commented a short comment on a previous post, that it may be a neat idea.
Because it would showcase the history of AP's music scene.  AP indeed does have
one.
I thought the music heritage scene of AP was something worth saving, or
holding onto?  I've seen numerous postings about how music was the best way to
market AP, becasue it's real, and not something forced onto a place.  It is and
was AP.

Oh, and one more:

- ignore history/heritage/tourism based economics, plow down as much
as possible and build 3000+ Condominiums

Yah, thats that ticket. Worked real well.

NOT !

Unfortunately, that applies to all the good ideas proposed for
Asbury Park.

- a light transit monorail to the Seaview Mall site
- an IMAX Theater
- recording and movie production sound stage facilities
- an amusement museum with a REAL Carousel and the oldest Wheel
- a HoverCraft terminal linked to AC and NYC
- a science/technology site for wave based alternative energy
- ...
- a real live Theater Organ in a Historic building

 blah, blah, blah

Really missed the boat in Asbury Park

2008-08-16 Thread lightgrw
The original ideas were NOT for a ROCK and ROLL museum - it was a museum
highlighting the entire history of music in New Jersey. This history,
in case you're not familiar with the artists, is pretty extensive. In
fact, many musical firsts throughout our country's history were done or
created by people from Jersey.

Rock, pop, opera, jazz, hip-hop, country, etc.For example, Newark,
New Jersey was one of the top cities in the world for jazz musicians
while artists like Frank Sinatra remain one of the biggest names in the
world.

This museum idea would bring crowds. Unfortunately, the people behind
the idea do not have money and the people with money don't have the
foresight.

YOU're the one, asking should AP have another museum, not me. I took
it to mean what I posted. Tongue in cheek. Since I live and pay
taxes here, I have the option of speaking FOR Asbury Park. Museums
give a City character and prestige, just as the new eateries and shops
do. It means that the residents are cultured and believe in preserving
the past. You know full well, that I'm not new, as you put it, in
this group. I'm that "other" group; you know, the dominant group in
Asbury; the Blacks! I vote, I matter and I count! I'm unashamed of
my rich heritage and culture. I should know; I was born and raised in
New Orleans, Roman Catholic by birth, 5th generation of Catholics from
slavery, in a predominantly Catholic area. I still have family and
friends there.

I came here, in 1968, to visit, look the place over and see if I'd
care, to live here. I moved here, in 1970, after the riots. If you
ask 10 people what caused the riot, you get 10 different answers, from
"natives". I've heard rumors, bad and good about this place, but this
much I do know, some of the finest human beings live, work and play
here. Asbury Park, is a place with a heart and soul. Many came here
for all the right reasons. There ARE posters, who don't live here,
but grew up as you did, elsewhere, (I'm assuming).

Not being a native, I don't have that much room to talk either, but to
some, I've been here so long, I'm spoken to, as though I came WITH the
place. I love that. I love the honor and respect I get in the most
unexpected places. When stories are related to me of past years, I
remind the speaker, that I didn't grow up here and I'm told, "Well you
MISSED it", while I chuckle away.

Hey, I forgot; opinions are like your rear end, everybody has one. If
I've insulted you, I humbly apologize! A REAL woman isn't to big to
say she's sorry! Remember that.

That's why CH and The Paramount are coming back to life. When it's
open, people will come. The next trcik to have a palce to stay when
they come or get them to com BACK when NOTHING is going on.

That's why I think you will see more and more show dates in the
Winter and by next summer, I would expect you will see something in
CH and Paramount every weekend.

And here's a thought how the city can earn MORE revenue off CH and
the Paramount. Ink a deal with Partners and MM to add $1.75 (a
number) onto every ticket (or even $1.00). No one will notice.

When the City ran CH, they would get costs for Security or a cut of
ticket sales - if I recall correctly.

"Another" rock'n'roll museum? Where's the current one? The ephemerae in the

Some people may consider their tastes too 'refined' for the low or middle brow
called rock'n'roll, but the simple fact is, along with everything else,
rock'n'roll has been a major part of AP's cultural landscape. It would be
extremely foolish, both culturally and economically, not to capitalize on it.

The same thing happened when the former site of the Cavern Club in Liverpool
was bricked up. The city fathers at the time failed to realize how
Betales-related tourism was a boon to the local economy, which was in dire need
of a boost. Since then it was reopened, after a fashion, and thankfully the
city began opening their eyes and minds to the fact that such music tourism
could only help, not hurt.

Okay, regarding the sign... so if you look at the website on the sign
(njcoors.com), it links to a site that has a list of events for
different bars around the shore. The Stone Pony does not have any
events or even advertise on that site. The sign could be outdated
since it was put up last year, as it also says coors light summer
concert series (I'm assuming they were part of this in 2007 when the
sign went up). So that does not provide a reason as to why the sign is

Good lord. Why don't they just replace the Stone Pony sign with one
that says "Hunka Bunka" and be done with it already? (Come to think of
it, that's likely the precise reaction they're trying to elicit.)

As to Charlie's point about the Pony never being high end - True, but

Absolutely! There's NOTHING historic about Coor's light, except to
Anheuser-Busch! Since this is an Asbury Park Group, why wasn't a
sign requesting the history of AP? Oh, too easy? Still tacky! Hear
that, MM?

They just need permission from the owner to put it up! May be a

Oh okay.  The buidling or club was never high end.  It has always been
"tacky and cheap" to a certain extant.  When was it ever anything else?  If it

I see your point to a certain extent though...  The fact that the sign may

I agree!! A friend of mines cousins are coming over from France next
year, they want to go to Asbury park, number one on there list,
before NYC or DC. They are big Bruce fans, even though they can't
speak more than 20 words in English! Someone needs a way to tap into
that and make some money! Graceland is real good at seperating
tourist from cash, someone could do the same here!

Yeah, but I've seen reports on CNN today talking about Bruce's car, and just
now while
listening to NPR it was one of todays top stories. Bruce's car in NYC, not
Asbury Park.
Any well done music museum at our boardwalk would be a tourist attraction,
especially
one that honors Bruce. I have no doubt that we'd even get European tourists to
visit such a
museum, since Europe is full of Bruce and Bon Jovi fans. I know this for a
fact. Back in
2000, I was in Hannover Germany for the European MTV music awards, and I was
wearing
my "Vaccaro Guitars" tee shirt, proudly emblazened with "Asbury Park". A rather
large
group of extremely attractive German women singled me out from the crowd,
asking all
sorts of questions about Asbury Park, Bruce, Bon Jovi etc. One offered me $200
for the
shirt. I turned it down, and despite how beat up it is, I still wear it to this
day.

[AsburyPark] Re: Insult to Injury - Bruce's car goes there

2008-08-13 Thread sandpiper15

Cleveland's role in the commercial growth of the music aside, no one
could genuinely argue that any city in the U.S. is more indispensible
to Rock and Roll than Memphis - another city desperately in need of an
economic shot in the arm. So where do they put the annex? Hollywood
East, just six stops south of Mr. Wenner's offices. How convenient. But
what to expect from an institution that thinks Madonna was a key player
in the history of the genre yet never seems to have heard of Wanda
Jackson?

The lesson for Asbury Park is to not put too much stock in Halls of
Fame. A straight ahead music museum, a la STAX, however, would be
perfect for the L lot around the Pony.

Let SoHo have his Chevy. Hold out for the Harley! ;)

Why are they still having the fireworks tonight? Theres a concert
already taking place to draw people to the boardwalk. Hopefully theyre
having them afterward, and not during the show so we can hear loud
explosions while the show is going on.

[AsburyPark] Re: Insult to Injury - Bruce's car goes there

2008-08-13 Thread Jack Pitzer
The most obvious thing in the world is right under MM's eyes, and they don't
even see it.
The only that that truly brings crowds to AP is music. The boardwalk redev will
attract the
curious, and once they see that most of the pavilions contain high end retail,
they probably
won't come back for a second visit. Take Style Rocket for example. $75 shorts
and tee
shirts. Yeah, right. I went in, think it's a nice space, but there's no way I'm
going to spend
that kinda bucks on things that should cost a fraction of that.
But tonight, we'll have Dylan, and it'll be packed.
MM should hop on an airplane and take a trip to Austin TX. Music IS the
attraction there.
Music, 24/7, all sorts of music, and all sorts of music history. We HAD music
history right
here in AP, and MM has pretty much ignored it. Some might disagree with me on
that
point, but I don't see the crowds here during the day that I've seen in Austin,
and when
there isn't an event at CH, Paramount or SP, it's still pretty dead compared to
the other
ocean front towns. We have acres of wasted space, with the hulk of C-8 part 2
marring the
view. At night time, we have a SP parking lot lit up like it's day time, thus
ruining any
kind've nighttime ambience that you'd want. The bandshell, that's just a crime.
And, what
about that ugly metal staircase on the north side of the 1st Ave pavilion?
Totally out of
place, no aesthetic value what so ever.
In case you haven't guessed, I'm no fan of MM. I think they've gotten it
partially wrong. The
wrong architect, the wrong tenants for the boardwalk. They've done right with
the CH and
Paramount though, and I respect the work done there. But I still think the
pavilions look
like crap, not the old crap during the bad years, just a new kind of crap.
Shipping
containers make it look like a perpetual construction site. And the vanity MM
and APP
offices look like shit. Total eyesore. The renderings didn't show the ugly AC
units, the
lattice bullshit, none of that. I brought some people from up north to visit
during my
vacation, who work in the design field, and they just tore the look from inland
to shreds.
Is it better? Yes. Is it appropriate and well done, hell no.
But, we'll have fireworks tonight. Even that's getting redundant.

Alot has changed in a year and it would be interesting to see if they
were actually serious about it when they said they were greatly
considering one.

And I wonder how their casino "arena" plans are progressing, or if 2010

site.

Right now though, it doesnt seem like they really care or seem to be
that interested in a music hall of fame (or even the NJ hall of fame).
Or the bandshell...
