I was afraid you were going to say that; city being bankrupt, that is. Has anyone in this group seen a budget? Who would be privy to that, other than the Council and attorneys? As far as voting for Jim, if he runs I guarantee him my vote. Why? He was the voice fighting for all of the discrepencies and other pablum, we were fed monthly! I hear voices saying they want "small gov'mint", less government intrusion, etc. until Sandy struck New Jersey like Katrina struck New Orleans! The two are incomparable because after 7 years, New Orleans is still struggling! I wasn't a big fan of Gov. Christie, but if he ran tomorrow, I'd vote for him. He threw down his dissension of all things Democrat and partnered with the President. He won me, when he said he governs New Jersey and it was incumbent on him to secure aid and assistance for his citizens. I am Catholic, as he is but I realized his humanity in that one statement. I consider myself a Progressive and laissez faire, on how others live and conduct their lives. There are too many entities claiming they run Asbury Park, for me! Even the committee to study a change in the way Asbury is governed isn't independent because the City has a watchdog on the committee making sure they don't make any independent decisions. My opinion. Until Asbury stops making these obscene insurance benefits to part-time, elected officials, they will continue to be in a deficit, turning off those they swore to defend! Not you, Dorfman, no I don't attend council meetings now. For the past year, I've had catastrophic illness in my home, not to mention conditions of aging and a heart that bypassed itself! I should be dead, according to my physician. Since January 2012, I've assisted my husband with his cancer, meaning 2-3 times a week, I've been up to Sloan-Kettering, by car and train for chemo, surgery and now recovery. I don't know how I did it, citing my own condition, but those who know me, have prayed and wished us both the best. When Sandy struck, the hospital wouldn't take us, so I spent 2 days in a shelter, then 6 days in Maryland with my daughter. My absence from Council meetings was the LAST thing on my mind! Asbury Park is healing on its' own as usual, while the "Keystone Kops", (the council), is still running around in circles, try.ing to pull more wool over our eyes! I realize too, that this is only one opinion. Where I come from "an opinion is like an a$$-hole, everybody has one"! --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, "oakdorf" wrote: > > > on a real balance sheet, the city, like many others in the US and NJ, IS > BANKRUPT. > > You won't be able to fund the pensions and accumulated sick time in AP - well > not without state aid or some other funny accounting. > Yahoo! I, too, applaud Rita Morano for her letter to the Press and for keeping the rest of use "couch potatoes" informed as to what is happening in town. Rita has been a town watch dog for more years then I have been living in this city and right or wrong (which she seldom is i.e. wrong) , at least she attends all city council meetings and actually does a more comprehensive reading of the issues that come before the board then the council members do! I give her credit for attempting to keep our taxes down and eliminating what she sees as wasteful spending on the part of our city council and manager! Keep up the good work, Rita! My hat is off to you! I applaud Rita for even sending the letter to the Press! Why would the City elect to float a $58 million dollar bond? Who owns the Waterfront? The City or Madison Marquette? I mean a lot of historical buildings have been demolished with the City's full knowledge, gave Asbury Park away and haven't gotten anything in the return to offset high property taxes! They're always crying "poor mouth" but appears to be mismanaged paying insurance premiums for part-time work! Any complaints seem to fall on deaf ears, which is why I rarely post now. What's the use? In order to "change" the way things are run, you have to GET OUT THE VOTE! I think the Council thought they were innovative but they're on someone else's dime! When the "audit" was found to be off and the blame was transferred to the former auditor, it turns out that the auditor was right! No one was fired, either! What's that all about? [AsburyPark] Re: Rita marano's letter to ed on app.com on Bond Support to IStar
Brian, Your statement, ³Rememberthe council is ceremonial in that they make no financial decisions for the city,² is not accurate. The City Council makes almost EVERY financial decision for the city. The Council sets fiscal policy, they vote to approve all budgets, they vote to approve all disbursements from the city coffers, etc. The City Manager, in our form of government, should be executing the vision and agenda, financial and otherwise, of the council. With the current Council, Mr. Reidy pretty much tells them what do and how to do it. Having served with four members of the Council, I say this with absolute certainty. This is why we are near bankruptcy with $60,000,000.00 in bond debt and the Council is proposing another $58,000,000.00 on top of it. They are out of their league with regard to this level of management and governance. This is why our City and the citizens of Asbury Park need and deserve better. This is why I am running for office and I am seeking, along with the entire Uniting Asbury Park, to provide true leadership and fiscal accountability. I hope that I can earn your vote in this campaign.
