Another element in the public's rights is to have the heritage and
cultural aspects of their community respected and preserved for
future generations. The natural environment is easy to identify ie.
the ocean etc.

The built environment is not always so obvious as it is in Asbury
Park. The Con.Hall, Boardwalk, Casino, BCHotel, open view corridors,
wide avenues, Palace, parks, etc are all just as important to
preserve.

Unfortunately the current direction of redevelopment, with its
massive residential zoning is in direct conflict with the goals of
preserving the City's heritage and cultural assets. Interesting that
environmentalists (natural) are hailed as the good guys, yet
preservationists (built environment) are maligned as the enemy.

then buy in long branch for "from the 700's" or in belmar ofr 2.5.

Or jsut realize then, that some people are trying to:

1. See something get done, for once in the past 35 years.

2. See that something gets done, that is somewhat, somewhat pleasing
to the eye, without making it feel like we're on 5th Ave in NYC or
for that matter, in Miami Beach, where for the most part, you have
no clue there is a beach there unless you pay 1 million for a view.

I call this BEACH ACCESS and under CAFRA and the right for the
public's enjoyment (public enjoyment) which I would define as the
masses, a right to view, for free, nature.

Yes, I also beleive in FREE, protected beaches. Problem is, no
(most) town provides enough parking for the their assets. Most by
choice.

All the beaches should be state parks.

YOu want an Ofront condo, then stand in line and move next to the
sewer plant or wait for metro homes. Best of luck.

Remember, buy low, sell high.

[AsburyPark] Re: The Look of Things -- a very strange bird

2005-08-24 Thread bluebishop82
Sure Werner, I'll try to answer the questions one at a time:

>Do you like Asbury Park?

An objective observer would have to say I do. Take a look at the
facts. All my family history is here. I am a third generation
AP'er. My paternal grandfather built the Son's of Italy on Asbury
Avenue. My maternal grandfather was a Deputy Chief of the Fire
Department. I went to the schools here, was married here, etc. I
still spend more time here than anywhere else. I collect the City's
memorabilia.

I moved my office here and took a marked hit in profits (I knew that
would happen) because many clients were initially afraid to come
here, but I wanted to assist the Downtown. My business pays rent
here and I create jobs here.

I'm currently under contract to buy property here.

I was a founding member of the Merchants Guild, and have done all
their legal work pro bono for 3 years now. I volunteer my time free
to the UEZ board. I volunteer my time free to the Parade Committee.
I give money to every civic group that asks (believe me they ask
constantly). I've supported our Police Department so much that the
head of the Union for the State of New Jersey made me an honorary
lifetime member of Asbury's local.

I give historical speeches with a slide show to civic groups about
AP, and instead of taking a stipend (which they offer), I ask the
group instead to meet me at my office on a Friday afternoon, so I
can give them a free tour of the Downtown stores (I have to close my
office to do that).

I take the AP Press to task for being unfair to AP as often and as
hard as I can. Try asking them to do a story about my free Downtown
tours which is great for our stores. They won't. They had no
problem printing the story about my office being burglarized
though. See, it's only bad news about AP that's worth printing for
them. That's why I prefer the Coaster.

I vigorously defend this City against people who say such things as
our residents "can't make an intelligent, informed decision" or that
we are basically a "racist community."

I would like to see the gentleman who originally asked me this
question to list what he does for AP, other than complain about it.

The answer Werner is yes, I like, even love AP.

Let me note this: Taking all of the above together gives me no more
or less right to speak about AP or to be taken at my word on issues
about AP. I have no entitlement to be right (or wrong) on an issue
based upon who I am, what I've done or what I've studied. I'm
either right or I'm wrong because I am correct or not about what I
say, not because of who I am.

> Why don't you like historic buildings?

I do. I just don't see many here in AP.

> Why don't you like views of the Ocean?

I love views of the Ocean. That's why I want to have one for
myself, preferably a condo on top of a boardwalk pavilion. What is
that old saying? "A developer is someone who wants to build a house
in the woods. An environmentalist is someone who already owns a
house in the woods." Sorry if progress takes away some existing
ocean views, but really Werner, if the guy who has a house just west
of yours complained that your home destroys his Ocean view there on
5th Avenue, I doubt you would tear your house down for him. The
gentleman who originally built your house didn't buy the argument
either. Now that you live there, I'll bet you are glad he didn't
care about his westerly neighbors complaining about loosing their
Ocean views.

>Why shouldn't the taxpayers be fairly treated?

What post did I make saying otherwise? I'm sure you don't read my
column, but if you read my piece on the Kelo decision you certainly
wouldn't be asking me this question!

[AsburyPark] Re: The Look of Things -- a very strange bird

2005-08-24 Thread Skip Bernstein
"Â…traderdube got it right the other day. Skip is always on the
attack." Please! No one is always on the attack; however, when one is
a silly ass they may come under attack more often than those not so silly.

Tommy's rules of message board etiquette: "Not OK to say: You are
wrong because you don't know anything. You are wrong because you are
stupid. You are wrong because you have not studied as much as me.
You don't care. You are a racist. You're biased. You're on the take.
You you you you you." Note I've never said Tom doesn't know anything,
wrong because he is stupid (though that may be true), that he doesn't
care, is racist, biased or on the take (all of which may also be true
but I would need more information to make such a judgment). Finally,
on this topic, I've never said or written "You you you you you."

"Look at Skip's last post. All I said was I would like to see
buildings where the open space on the boardwalk is. He never engaged
the subject. Just called me personally a bunch of bad things." And
what did big, bad, mean and nasty Skip write that was so injurious to
our gentle flower of a lawyer? You really don't like Asbury do you
Tommy? You don't like historic buildings, you don't like a view of the
ocean and you don't like residents of the city getting fair
compensation for the sale of their assets. You are not merely a silly
ass but a very strange bird.

At this point some useful definitions: silly ass: silly: ridiculous;
ass: A pompous fool; fool: A person who lacks good judgment

"Surely you see the difference." I for one do see the difference; you
make a mountain out of a molehill and then cry foul when someone calls
you on it.

You are a silly ass, or if the language offends you why not try `a
ridiculous and pompous fool'?

Just answer the issues. Do you like Asbury Park?, Why don't you like
historic buildings?, Why don't you like views of the Ocean? and Why

Tom, WADR, this is exactly what you don't do. Is this wishful
thinking? More often than not you take others comments out of
context, twist them around and feed them back with your own spin
about what the meaning was.

You rarely if ever back up your opinions with hard data and then come
back with 'it doesn't matter what I've studied, I'm just right' when
challanged.

OH, Now I get it - "Justified Right" :-)

Werner

PS - why not just get past Skip's style and address the issues he
raises?

I think traderdube got it right the other day. Skip is always on the

the score is hardly even.

Go ahead and review my posts with everyone else. I follow one rule:
I don't make "a conclusion about the person." That's the secret to
being polite on a board like this.

Some examples:

OK to say: I disagree with you. You are wrong about that. Your
opinion is not supported by the facts, so you are wrong about that.
Here is why my conclusion is better than yours, etc.

Not OK to say: You are wrong because you don't know anything. You
are wrong because you are stupid. You are wrong because you have not
studied as much as me. You don't care. You are a racist. You're
biased. You're on the take. You you you you you.

It simply never moves a discussion forward to concentrate on the
person. Concentrate on the other person's analysis, conclusion, etc.,
that's fine.

Look at Skip's last post. All I said was I would like to see
buildings where the open space on the boardwalk is. He never engaged
