Racisim. You are funny. Here is an example of racism. You have groups of people
in the middle east that have been killing each other for centuries. They are
all the same people, all the same religion, yet they can't stop killing each
other.  Blacks, Whites, Asians, martians are all racists and I don't care what
political affiliation you are.

How about not being allowed to attend a wedding with your wife, whi is, because
you are NOT Asian?

Sorry, but there are plenty of things that America can't be proud of these days.
Blind patriotism is lame. The most patriotic thing a person could do is speak
about
when our country heads in the wrong direction.

What war were you in Jack? Racism? Much of the racism in this country isn't by
white people. It gets old hearing about it it is time for people to take
responsibility for their own actions.

Obama doesn't hav enough experience and when things don't go his way he cries
racism but that is alright. Let's hope whe there is an emergency he has time
to rehearse a response. I hope that Biden is sleeping next to him if the phone
rings at 3AM.

Here's a few things that you didn't notice:
Torture.
A war based on lies.
Our greed effecting the entire world.
Racism.
We're fat as hell.
Religion and it's effect on our countries policies.
We stare at boxes (i.e. TV, internet, cell phones)
Ball players make more then teachers.
Get sick and spend the rest of your life paying for it.
Stupid people buying houses they can't afford, and lenders making jokes about
our
stupidity.
Conspicuous consumption.
Britney Spears was headline news.
Our music sucks.
We invented the crawl at the bottom of the screen, and we now use tiny little
sound bytes
to think that we actually know what's going on in the world.
We have a candidate for VP that thinks being close to Russia is foreign policy
experience.
We "elected" GW Bush to be our president, and during his 8 years in
office...blah blah blah.
So yeah, we're just fine. Great. Greatest country on the planet. Slightly more
then 200
years old, and we've got it all figured out. And we have true blue American's
like
traderdube to cheer us along.
Right.

2008-10-02 Thread Gabrielle Obre
nice discussion, thanks.
i won't say i am proud to be american, but i am extremely grateful. i
also know that my life and the comparable ease that i have comes in
some part at the expense of others in other countries. cheap clothes,
cheap energy, security etc.. so i feel a sense of responsibility.

i don't have the drives and fears that many americans seem to
have...no nagging urge to own property, get married or spawn. i dont
care if i don't have a lot of money, don't care if i am never
"successful" in the eyes of others. i dig my life, i love my freedom.
i truly believe we are here primarily to grow in love and
consciousness. to move from egocentric to ethnocentric to worldcentric
and beyond.

there is a lot about this country that i feel the urge to rail
against. and matt taibi and Jack have done it pretty well.

blind patriotism is simply delusional but a great thing for fascists.
hitler did a lot of damage with the "my country right or wrong" people.

Selling real estate isn't for all. Not for me either. Commercial is a
different story - if you're good and hustle and don't waste time
posting shit on the net.

I showed a condo in N. Beach today. So was it the best use of my
time. Don't know. I can look at it as I met a real nice couple that I
spent around 3 or 4 hours with in AP then Long Branch. Will they buy?
If they do, time well spent, if not it sucks - for now.

Would I be doing this had my wife not gone back to work with a pretty
good salary and I shifted paying my own bennies as self employed at
$1200 per month to her at around $900/month?

There will be a big shakeout in the in the field. Why? How many
homeowners and banks will eventually shift from using real estate
agents and commissons will continue to be reduced. Why? The Internet.
Realtor.com may have millons and millons of visitors but so do other
sites. The various listing services are all there...more and more
advanced services will be there and you just might be able to sell
your home on your own if set at a fair market price. Takes time and
patience - so therefore you find a real estate agent. There's no
science to it.

One Real estate agent said you don't make money in real estate
SELLING houses, you make money listing them. Sign here, see ya later
let some one else sell. YOu can take more listings quicker then
hauling someone around and wondering why a door doesn't close right
ot whether or not the paint in the bathroom is the right color...

time management and a second or third source of income helps.

Not saying this is the best place in the world.

When I was programming some years back at palces like AIG, ML , ATT...
I worked with all sorts of foreigners. That was around the time of
the big Y2K "scare"salaries were real good. No benefits, cause I
was consulting and my wife wasn't working.

They all came here for the opportunity that America gave them. The
guys and girls i worked with from India all sent money home or saved
it here and planned on your going back at some point - either perm or
to get married etc. I almost went into an outsourcing thing with a
guy, but then figured if I gave him 20k to get set up and he left,
how'd I ever find him?

The russians guys when we worked at AIG in a basement room with no
windows, drew pictures of the Kremlin on the whiteboard..working with
more security then needed...they said Moscow was more fun then being
in a room with no windows and pc's chained to desks...

The Chineese guys gave me the best advice when I was new - "just say
ok ok.."

YOu learn alot about working with people from other countries and it
makes you appreciate alot of what we do have and take for granted and
bitch about.

Like the guy in India who told me how the mailman would walk right
past your home (that you shared with generations of your family) and
you had to pay him to get your mail...

Most of us aren't peeing and bathing in the same water either.

We have lots of freedoms here..except off-topic postings.

Another point- I heard someone say recently "Most of the middle class
are one serious illness away from financial disaster." I had a cancer
scare when I was in between jobs (of course) and the crappy insurance
(a Blue Cross plan) I paid $300/month for hardly covered anything. And
they said if I did have cancer, well, let's say I would be in big
trouble. Thankfully, I did not bc if I did, I do not know how I would
have paid my bills, I would have lost my house, etc etc. If I was poor
and had nothing, at least I could get care, and if they came after me
for the bills, well, you can't get blood from a stone. But if you have
something, you can quickly find yourself with nothing. Wouldn't it be
nice if that was not the case?

As a realtor, are you not very concerned about where we are as a
nation? One of my realtor friends comes here to go to the clinics in
Asbury for medical care bc things have gotten so bad.

I do consider myself lucky, but people in other countries have that
opportunity as well. Do you think people in Canada do not have
opportunities to succeed? France? Belgium? In Costa Rica, I have never
seen so many small business owners making their way quite nicely. What
you describe is not unique to this country any more. Are Canadians
coming over the border in droves to make something of themselves? Are
the Swedes? The Dutch?

Actually, I was in India for a while, and it is a tough place. I loved
certain things about India, but the poverty is very diffcult to
swallow. Anyway, when I got off the plane in Paris and into a cab, I
had that same feeling. I was home. Not bc I ever lived in Paris, but
because I was back in a first world counry. I could brush my teeth
with the water! I could walk around by myself! The whole feel of Paris
was familiar.

Hey, I live here, and it works for me. But, Americans often have this
inflated sense of self worth, like "America is the best country in the
world, everything else sucks!" And, that is just not true. We really
need to take a good look in the mirror and see where we have gone
astray and look to fix it. All countries have their good points and
bad points, including ours.

Be happy that you were been given the opportunity to succeed (by
birth to successful parents) and took advantage (the opportunity) to
succeed.

Success and opportunity are funny words also.

Even if I go away and come back into Newark airport with its real
ugly views as you land - you're still back. Even if that means coming
back from Flordia.

In the US, you have opportunity to succeed and to fail. Failure here
in the US is not as big a deal as it is elsewhere.

Even prisoners in the US have rights and opportunity to succeed.

Banks and CO's all have the right to fail - with no consquences to
those that drove the failures.

Hara-kiri should be their option.

I think to be "proud" is the wrong word when one is referring to
something over which one has no control (at least by birth). I was
born in the USA, I am a woman, etc. Am I "proud" to be a woman? Am
I "proud" to be an American? As a word choice, I always found that
odd. I am proud of my accomplishments, but I am not "proud" of
things I had no control over.

I have lived in this country and in another. I have also travelled
extensively. I like certain things about this country, I like
certain things about other countries. I believe as a nation,
however, we have an extensive amount that we must work on,
accomplish, if you will.

I look at how I was raised. Upper-middle class suburb, great
schools, safe town, etc. My dad worked hard as a local attorney, and
we had a good life. A generation later, in certain ways, I am more
academically accomplished than my father, and I am more financially
accomplished then he ever was. But the landscape has changed. I
could not give my children (theoretical children) what I had growing
up. The house I grew up in is now worth $2 million!

I am 35 and married. I work ten hours a day, commuting two hours
each way to work in NYC. I work for a major company. I like AP,
don't get me wrong, but I have a 2 bedroom house and I don't think I
would send my theoretical children to school here. If I have a major
illness and can't work, I am finished. I would lose my tiny house. I
can't sell my house because of the housing crisis, so I can't move
closer to the city. And, if I could, where I could afford to live
would not be the "American Dream" suburb I grew up in (it would be
Jersey City). And, if I do have those theoretical children, I have
no idea what I would do- I am gone 14 hours a day and having one
spouse stay home is a luxury most can't afford anymore.

I consider myself one of the lucky ones. I am an attorney, with
health insurance and a good job. But our overall quality of life is
slipping. People scream "socialism" at any attempt to make life
better, ie, health care for the vast majority of people. But compare
our quality of life to that of those in some European countries (6
weeks vacation, state run child care, health care, etc). Sure, they
pay more taxes, but they get more services. Here, that "American
Dream" is slipping away, or is reserved only for the wealthy with
their golden parachutes. The rest of us schmucks will just drown
ourselves in debt, trying to make our way, and keeping our fingers
crossed that we do not get sick. Oh, but as an added bonus, we get
to pay for those golden parachutes because we are told if we don't
things will get even worse! Is that something we should be "proud"
of? I just don't see that as the right word.

That is my rant (and I didn't even discuss the Iraq war disaster).

[AsburyPark] Re: it's getting better all the time

2008-09-30 Thread Jack Pitzer
Right.

Sorry, but there are plenty of things that America can't be proud of these days.
Blind patriotism is lame. The most patriotic thing a person could do is speak
about
when our country heads in the wrong direction.

And now for a moment of humor, for you Fox News lovers out there;
