IF you ask Adam Fulrath who is the love of his life, he will barely blink an
eye before responding: Parappa.
Mr. Fulrath, a 37-year-old design director at Time Out New York, keeps five
photographs of Parappa, a shorthaired, bicolored, mixed-breed cat, on his
desktop. He knows that it might be considered a little weird that a grown man
would be so enamored with his kitty, but Mr. Fulrath, who is into video games
and comic books and calls himself a “straight, geeky guy,” doesn’t care.
“She’s my primary relationship,” he said.
Mr. Fulrath is one of a growing number of single — and yes, heterosexual —
men who seem to be coming out of the cat closet and unabashedly embracing
their feline side. To that end, they are posting photographs and videos of
their
little buddies on YouTube and on Web sites like _menandcats.com_
(http://menandcats.com/) , and Twittering about them to anyone who will
listen.
Indeed, it seems that man’s best friend is no longer a golden retriever, but
a cuddly cat named Fluffy. This movement, such as it is, is in direct
contrast to the most notable in the recent spate of reports about the
relationship
between a man and a cat, which were far darker; they focused on a young actor
who was recently on trial in New York City for killing his girlfriend’s cat —
he said it attacked him — only to have a jury decide after several days
that it could not reach a verdict.
If it had been a little less violent, that case might have been more in line
with what the world seems to expect of men and cats.
The image of the crazy spinster cat lady persists, and plenty of people do
wonder about a guy with a cat. As a writer on
_adventuresofacitygirl.blogspot.com_
(http://adventuresofacitygirl.blogspot.com/) put it: “Single men and
cats are like a burger and broccoli. Separately they are okay, but together it
just seems off.”
But those who see a growing link between men and cats see that attitude (not
to mention the cat slaying) as old-fashioned.
Clea Simon, who wrote “The Feline Mystique: On the Mysterious Connection
Between Women and Cats,” said: “I do think it has become more acceptable for
men
to own cats — partly for practical reasons, like the growing realization
that they’re better city pets, and partly the whole acceptance of our
cross-gender traits that men crave intimacy, too.”
Stacy Mantle, the founder of _Petsweekly.com_ (http://petsweekly.com/) , a
magazine for pet lovers, said that men are becoming more “cat literate”
because they themselves are evolving.
“It’s the unevolved members of the species who tend toward abuse of cats —
and oftentimes, women and children,” said Ms. Mantle, who owns 18 cats.
Although there are no hard (or soft) statistics (it is rare to find an owner,
man or woman, walking a cat in public), it seems that single, heterosexual
male cat owners are on the rise. Over the last few years Sandra DeFeo, an
executive director at the Humane Society of New York, said she had seen an
increase in the number of single, straight men who are adopting cats.
Carole Wilbourn, a cat therapist (yes, really) in Manhattan, said that the
number of her single, straight male clients has risen about 25 percent over the
 last five years.
When the Web site _PetPlace.com_ (http://petplace.com/) asked its readers, “
Do Real Men Own Cats?” almost 84 percent of respondents said “yes.” “Only
intelligent, aware, caring men love cats,” one reader said. And in a 2005
survey by Cats Protection, an animal welfare agency in the United Kingdom, the
majority of the 790 people who responded said it was cool for a guy to own
cats.
This line of thinking does not surprise cat lovers, many of whom believe that
only pillars of virility and masculinity would dare to own one. They are
quick to point out other well-known macho cat owners: _Ernest Hemingway_
(http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/h/ernest_hemingway/index.h
tml?inline=nyt-per) , _Mark Twain_

 ,
Victor Hugo and _Marlon Brando_

Hi Mike---If you ever think cats have no use for people except for food you
need to experience a heartbreaking encounter with three little "senior" cats we
just took into our sanctuary.

They lived at Phillips Seaview Towers with their owner, a woman who had her leg
amputated. She cherished these girls, giving them her heart and soul. At the
untimely age of 50 something she passed away a few weeks ago. Luckily a
wonderful Russian woman who lives there, Olga, got in contact with us the day
before they were going to be taken away to be euthanized. They are with us now
and are the sweetest, most adorable cats you would ever want to meet. We call
them The Golden Girls! Ellen Carroll has been nice enough to ask Don Stine to
do a story for us in The Coaster next week to make people aware of the need to
plan for your pets in case of health or economic crisis. Of course The Golden
Girls will be featured as we would love to find a loving home for them.

To get back to the point, when Tabitha, Noelle and Pumpkin came to us they did
not care about food. They were grieving for a love lost and all they wanted
was comfort and a warm body to snuggle against. They are doing better now but
still only want to be loved!!!

broken---I cannot imagine what you must have went through.

Your shepard sounds like he was a very special little man. After all, he sounds

like our children. I cannot tell you how many hard times I have faced whcih
have been overcome with the comfort of my animals. I cherish each and every
one of them and thank God I have been lucky enough to have them by my side.

Sorry Debbie, that I didn't respond about the Yappy hour! I can'thave pets
here, so I sort of by-pass the pet stuff. I also lost 2animals, so I detour
away from having to remember them. Pets are likechildren. They ask so little
and are loyal as hell! The last time Iwas at your place, I sat outside where
all the pets were, loved it,then thought about my 2 lost doggies, that I loved
as much as my kids.I use to cook beef stew and mix it with the dry, for a real

to my dogs, ran with themwhen I was able and acted like a plain old fool!I love
what you do for animals, Debbie and admire you for it. Beingaround pets depress
me, as my last 2 pets were lost to me. Someonestole one and the other was found
dead. I ache, when I think of whatthey went through, so again, I hope you

Thank You so much---You are right. So many people on Cookman are working their
hardest to make the Downtown a great destination for locals and tourists alike.
The only way any of us is going to make it through this time of trouble is to
support and promote each other. I will be happy to carry any information to
give out to the public for you. We have a community table in front where we
would be happy to put your flyers.

Debbie I agree with what is happening in the world.. wouldnt it be great to
comment on all the great things that are happening in town... we had 400 people
on a zombie walk.. might not be "mainstream" but it was a huge huge success...
we have new stores opening on Cookman Ave... kathy kelly from Paranoramal Books
is working tirelessly and with out 1 thank you.. to make a huge holloween
celebration in town...you have shelter home.. with great gifts...accessories
for the home.. they are always open..well lit and a great place to shop... I
sponsered the NJ gay mens chorus on saturdaythey had a huge group in front
of my restaurant(plan b) MM is not here to save downtown... they are here to
help support the work of those of us who have bought homes in town ( i live on
park ave)... built businesses... and as residents of town.. we need to support
everything that we can.. show up at the free events... and if we have a cpl of
bucks.. have a coffee.. have a drink.. have a appetizer.. a meal in downtown...
and tell our extended networks how great AP is...This economic downturn is
going to hit people hard... I think more so in AP where the downtown..and the
boardwalk do not have enough years of stable economic growth. this year.. take
your xmas, chanukah shopping budget and spend it in Asbury Park... when you
have to take someone out for their bday..anniversary.. that special night.. do
it in AP... I know that i try to do everything I can in town...I want my
business to succeed and I want to protect my investment in my homeso lets
all work together on rebuilding this great place...stop pointing fingers and
who does what wrong and whos responsible...and do what is for the good of this
city.--- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Debbie DeLisa <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I think Depression pricing on beer is a great idea! I will get together with
Caroline and Dennis from The Pony today and we will work something out. We are
all working together to make things work. Caroline and Joe have already come
up with a lot of new food and drink specials at O'Tooles---Make sure to check
it out.

Thank You for your support!!!

Take a deep breath and take it for what it is. 1. If you have a bix in AP, you
might like it if someone says "your food is great" and you should also look at
it the same way as "I ate there and the food sucks...". - you should understand
WHY the food was great and why the food sucked.Example: I was in AC the other
day. I saw an ad for a new Japaneese place at the Borgata. The food sucked. I
mean I even knew the advacado wasn't ripe in the advacado roll. I kept quiet,
but I did call there yesterday and let them know. All the food there sucked. A
matter of fact, I got nervous when the waiter explained to me before I ordered
that everything was really small orders...the "modern" outfits the staff had
were terrible as well.2. The boardwalk is a public place. - people will like it
as it is or NOT like all or part of it for one reason or another. I like tall
women. I'm tall. Add in the pretty eyes and nice hair and we're off to a good
start. I'm getting older, so that might be enough. When I was 16, I thought
blond blond blond.3. Debbie did a great job on the WB. BUT when Larry or
whomever closed it down, the board was used to get people going and people
based larry and whoever else needed to be based. The board bithced you can't
get pizza on the BW, WB rolled out pizza... there was a day when the WB was all
closed up. bravo to getting it open. I think MM did an amazing job in the short
time they kicked off doing what they did. Ugly or not. The BW was functional
and didn't look like it did the year before.CH and Paramount are in great
shape, at least from the looks of it.Time to offer "economic recovery happy
hour..." how about depression pricing on beer?

I think it is very sad that this group has focused all of their time and energy
on politics and judgemental comments on Madison Marquette and the City Council.
At this time in our lives where we are facing an extreme financial crisis we
should be trying to support each other and surround this board with positive
thoughts. On Monday the Asbury Park Press ran a 2 page article on the Doggy
