[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Lite Audio DAC-60 thinking about getting one..

2006-02-04 Thread crooner

That's the page I was browsing. Price is about right sans shipping.
There's also an outfit shipping directly from the factory.

Given the increase in quality of Chinese goods in recent years (I am
typing this on a Chinese made laptop), I am confident this unit will be
good buy.

watch ebay for those. I passed up bidding on a dac-60 when the bidding
went over 300 (about 6mo. ago), but it went for under 350 shipped, new.
Hell of a bargin with that faceplate :) The seller was a dealer out of
the US, maybe poth or pacific audio or something- who also sells them
new. Buy in the US in case you need service, IMO.

edit: it's pacific valve co. that sells new -on sale now-, and
sometimes on ebay.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Reality Check: Power Supplies

2006-02-04 Thread crooner

Sonic-wise the best way to improve performance would be by means of a
higher quality external DAC or analog interconnects.

I was never really convinced by the linear power supply upgrades.

An external linear regulated supply will reduce the noise going INTO
the HV switcher, but it won't make any difference on the noise coming
out of the HV switcher and going into the linear regulators that power
the analog stages.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Lite Audio DAC-60 thinking about getting one..

2006-02-04 Thread crooner

One of the most attractive features of the SB3 is the ability to use
external DACs due to the transparent coax output.

Since the SB3's design already includes a top notch Burr Brown DAC, an
old 1990's outdated DAC or a cheapie little box, I am guessing, is not
going to cut it. I want something that would literally blow me away,
not just barely audible, if you know what I mean.

The minimum requirement for an external DAC would be a tube output
stage and/or a more advanced 24 bit DAC chip IMHO.

The Benchmark DAC-1 is a nice unit, but the near 1K price tag is a
little steep for me.

I have come across the Chinese made Lite DAC-60 and it seems to be just
what I was looking for. It has two 6922 tubes in the analog buffer and
dual Burr Brown 24 bit DACs. Construction is also impressive with two
large PS transformers and decent quality parts.

The full size chassis has a large machined aluminum front panel which
reminds me of the old Sonic Frontiers products.

The price is $475 air shipped from the factory.

My Audio Research PH3 phono stage also uses 6922s, so I am quite
familiar with them. I even have some NOS Bugle Boy 6DJ8s that I can use
for tube rolling ;-)

I think I am going to go for this one. Sounds like one heck of a deal
to me.

Best,

crooner

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Smooth balanced sound from my Squeezebox

2006-02-04 Thread crooner

I added an extra ferrite core (I had one laying around somewhere) to the
power supply end of the cable. No discernible improvement but it
certainly didn't hurt anything :-)

I also looped both ferrites like Sean suggested.

Interestingly, I was looking at a portable cheap Sony system and it had
a ferrite looped on the AC cable!

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Problem in streaming native wma

2006-02-04 Thread ahonly4u

Hi all

While i choose wma to stream in native format, and issue the play
command in slim server, the slim server is not sending the slim proto
command, i.e 'strm' command. In release notes slimserver 6.2 it is
mentioned that wma can be streamed in native format.

When i choose wma to stream with lame, either mp3 or wav, the slim
server issues the 'strm' messages to the control port.

i changed the convert.conf, replaced "wma wma squeezebox2 *" with
"wma wma * *". But the slimserver is not sending the 'strm' command.

Regards
AH

I think PC is the wrong term. Digging into the OTG stuff a little (it's
mostly too technical for me) it seemed you'd need at least a 'client' or
something to run the drivers.

Also bad, I believe, is the fact that the power has to be returned from
the device- so It'll always have power going through it. I'm not sure
how this power would effect the USB receiver or conversion process in
general, but there seems to be no way to isolate it, thus you'd be
drawing power from the 'PC' source which is bad news. I've read maybe a
USB hub could be battery powered providing some isolation, just someone
elses pet theory though. I'll throw in the disclaimer so popular around
here, INEE (I'm no EE).

Like I said, I love my Squeezebox. I'm not so attached, however, that
I'm not curious how the PC-USB-->I2S-->DAC interface might sound in a
few years. Why rush out and invest in it though? The SB has proven NOT
to be a bottleneck in systems far better than mine. 'Nuff said :)

Unfortunately they expect everyone to be hooking an ipod up to whatever
they're making, I think. The guys in the article seemed to get the SNR
where it needed to be and quit, instead of shooting for the moon- let
alone 'listening' to the product (!). Sean is willing to listen to his
product, therefore I trust him. Flawed logic?

When I first read the title of this thread, I thought that someone had
finally realised that you can't turn a SB into a megabucks CDP beater
just by adding a external supply. ;-)

But what if as I said, the level of the amp noise is such that it masks
the SB noise? i.e. can you tell the difference between a xdB level of
noise and x+0.1xdB?
