you may want to try w/o that polyester film cap in there too. film caps
actually aren't very good for supply bypassing in high-speed (e.g.
digital) circuits. the parasitic inductance is much higher than
eletrolytic or chip ceramic caps and can screw up the sound. YMMV, but
some people feel they add coloration.

i recently opened up my lightly-modded Sony SACD player, which i've
felt for a while was a little bright and tizzy up top. i forgot i had
previously added Panasonic polypropylene film bypasses by the output
opamp. the Pana P is a pretty good cap, but i realized this was a no-no
and took it out, replacing it with some 10uF Panasonic HFU electrolytics
i had in my parts bin (they're predecessors to the FC caps). ah, much
better... after some break-in much of the tizziness was gone. i'm now
very wary of using film caps for PS bypassing anywhere when
high-frequency, low-ESR 'lytics (like Pana FC) are already in place.

quick question: does anyone find that the SB lacks a little "oomph" in
dynamics or bass with the opamp taken out? i mean on an absolute basis,
i.e. compared to a good external DAC, not the stock SB. my experience
with bypass mods is they are very transparent, but sometimes the
impedance mismatches caused by the removal of buffering can make the
sound a little thin or anemic. is the BB DAC chip really ok by itself?

Thanks for the feedback y'all. I ripped a test tone disc and ran 1KHZ at
-10db. Everything balances out right. This unit was straight out of the
box. Maybe there was a burn in period... I don't know. It would be nice
to have some form of balance adjustment for the SqB. Maybe next version.
Thanks for the help folks.

I think it's a great idea to go with an active setup Jon, but at some
point did you plan on moving to speaker/sub cabinets that did not
include a crossover of their own? I know there is a debate on active
vs. passive xovers, but I didn't think anyone recommended both. Is
there really that much of an advantage to adding hiPass xovers before
full range speakers with their own built in crossovers?

The balance is correct on these files when I play them through my sound
card. Also... All other sources on my system are balanced correctly, so
the finger points to the SB3... I am sad to say.
I have sourced the output of the Slimdevice both through my speakers
and headphones on my system.

It seems odd that the decoding of the signal might make it
predominantly left. Is it because I live in California with other 'left
wingers?' : )

But left and right should be calculated the same way, so you'd expect
them to match if the levels match.

Fezco, have you measured the analog outputs with a meter? Have you
tried playing a test tone?

Sometimes absorption or reflection in your listening room can make the
audio sound skewed to one side. Sometimes the recording really is
skewed to one side. I've certainly experienced moments of doubt that
caused me to go get my multimeter and test CD...

Can someone from Slim comment on what they have experienced with FW 29
-- why it was injected into 6.2.2 so late in the game and what the deal
with the stuttering is? 6.2.2 looked like it was poised for release and
this new FW seems to break what was once a very stable branch for a lot
of folks. I know wireless problems were a huge issue and that's what
FW 29 is trying to fix, but maybe a stable 6.2.2 release with FW 28
makes more sense, with FW 29 being used in a 6.2.3 branch?

Yep, that's it. The resistor and capacitor in that circuit are not
necessary, they are just there to remove any DC voltage. Without them,

Are you saying that the VU meters on the Squeezebox show that the left
channel is louder?

I would expect those to register the levels in the digital data, and it
would be very odd indeed if the Squeezebox were digitally boosting the
level of one channel and not the other. A bug in the firmware or the
slimserver, or perhaps the level bias is intrinsic to the tracks that
you're testing with.

What version of the firmware are you using?

What version of slimserver are you running?

Have you examined those files in an audio editor?

What format are the files you're trying to play?

That's very strange. Is this coming from the
analog output or the digital?

I'm assuming from your equipment that you're using
the analog outputs, in which case we have to
determine if the files are like this at the source
(unlikely) or if they are being mangled by the SB.

Try to play the files in a computer audio player.
  Odds are they are fine.

If they're fine in the computer, try another sound
source on that preamp input. Make sure to swap
interconnect cables too. If that's fine as well,
I'd say you have a defective SB. Confirm this by
listening to the headphone output. This must be a
very rare failure though.

This may be a stupid question for which I ask your forbearance. Are
you connecting via RCA out (analog) or one of the digital options? The
reason I ask is that if I am connecting to an external DAC (via digital
optical out)how does available current affect the digital stream?

The PAR-0530 is not suitable. It is rated at 0.3 Amp which is nothing
like sufficient for the Squeezebox. The PAR-0510 has the best spec at
1 Amp, which may be enough, you will have to try it to find out.

I can confirm the CPC power supply is linear - I've had a look inside
it - and it is rated at 1.5 Amps. I can also confirm that mine and the
two others I know of are working well with S/box 2 and 3.

It would be very interesting if someone with a linear power supply
-someone who thought it made a big difference- tested plugging in the
SMPS right next to the linear (just plugged in, not actually driving
the SB). Did the sound degrade at all? (Don't forget to test with the
SMPS driving the SB as well -just in case there was some placebo going
on ealier..)

To make the test more valid the SMPS should really have a load attached
(another SB?).

Not withstanding M3Rocket's comment, the Squeezebox smps wall-wart is

well with the three players I know of. In comparison with the 1Amp

and it's too large and heavy to use as a wall-wart if it had been
constructed like that. This suggests to me that the Power Pax

spec, if needs to supply 1Amp continuously to the player(?)"

With regards to the Powermax model, wouldn't the next model up part no:
PAR-0530 from http://www.powerpax.co.uk/ac_dc.htm
be sufficient? It has output voltage of 5v and ampage is 300 (mA). SB3

think this is advisable? I'm UK based and I am contemplating between

I think somewhere in this thread there is also a description of how a

(size, weight, heat).

I'm not yet sure about the sound improvements - still need to do some
