[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Pre-amp Needed?

2006-02-15 Thread joncourage

If the only music source I intend to use is SB3 -> DAC, is there any
need for a pre-amp given that I can control the volume in the SB3
software? Can I just output my DAC direct into an amp or a pair of
monoblocks?

if possible, the good the bad and the ugly of doing so?

seems to me that the rule of signal-chain simplicity would favor such
an approach.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Q on the internal SB2/3 switcher

2006-02-15 Thread occam

Andy,

Sorry, my title for the thread was very ambiguous.
Thanks much for the info on the stepdown switcher used for the digital
circuitry.

>From a previous post by Sean (specific to the SB2)-

Code:

  AC  ->  5V 2A  -> Dual  > 3v3 (IO, wireless, logic)
  SMPS| Switcher > 1v2 (CPU core)
  |
  |> Linear reg > 3v3 (headphone)
  |
  |
  |> Switcher > Multiplier -> 11VAC VFD ef
  ||
  ||
  14VDC  ||---> 55VDC VFD vdd2
  --RC filter<-|
  |
  |
  |--> Linear reg ---> 9vdc (op-amps)
  |
  |--> Linear reg ---> 5vdc (DAC)

What I was actually inquiring about was the 'switcher' that feed the
multiplier (Cockcroft-Walton) which generates the 11vac and 55vdc (for
the display?) and the 14vdc which is decoupled by that bigass(tm) cap
and ultimately the linear regulators feeding the dac and opamp. My
question was how is that specific 'switcher' implemented, i.e. a
multivibrator? and at what frequency and duty cycle?

Sean - Would you please enlighten?

Thanks,
Paul

A pre-amp is not needed, if the output is great enough to drive your
amp/speaker combination. In fact, I use passive attenuators right

I haven't tried out a linear PSU as yet. That was based on some
comments I had seen in a thread some time back.
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=4439&postcount=6

However, in light of this thread, I talked with one of our hardware
engineers at work (who formerly worked with Prime Digital - the
manufacturers of the Wadia line of audiophile CD players), who said
that it actually might help even though he couldn't give any
guarantees. With that in mind we managed to dig up a fairly robust
+5A/2A linear PSU from some corner of the lab. Once I get a chance to
build a connector that bridges the output of the Linear PSU with the
input of the SB2, I will give it a shot and let you know how it sounds.
Hopefully it will be over the weekend.

Regds,

Nikhil

I took a long hard look at the Olive recently before deciding to go
with Squeezebox, and my thinking was much along the lines of davep's.
I've bought a wireless SB3, a wired SB2, and a 250GB LinkStation (to
hold the music and run slimserver) all for a total of about $700, which
is far less than either of the Olive machines. Even after I add a 3rd
SB/room the outlay will be less than a single Olive Musica.

I suspect that for some the all-in-one aspect of the Olive (at least
until you start streaming to other rooms) appeals to many people. I
don't do that much critical listening, but I'm still happier keeping
the noisy bits (the LinkStation's disk and fan) down in the basement,
where you can't hear it over the furnace anyway.

And given the relatively small capacity of the Olive boxes, for most
people (especially those ripping to lossless formats) an additional
storage point will have to come into the picture sooner or later
anyway, negating Olive's all-in-one advantage.

Final selling points for the SB were the non-proprietary, open source
orientation of SlimDevices, and the active user base.

Bottom line: the price of the Olive scared me away, but I would say now
that I would still go with the SB even if money weren't an issue. Your
Mileage (and/or Money) May Vary.

Before I bought the SlimServer, I too had concerns about needing a
server running. I assumed that my Server would be the same box that is
now my Computer. (It is, in fact.) It doesn't have to be, though.
Many people have some box in a closet somewhere. I gather the
alternative you are considering costs more than a Squeezebox and a new
computer combined. So, buy both if you don't want to use your other
computer. As has been pointed out, there are advantages to not having
them in the same room.

I hadn't heard them until this year; just heard enough *about* them that
they seemed to be on my must-audition list. I suggested to my
girlfriend that the next time we were both in Atlanta, we should arrange
to listen to Jim Smith's demo system. The way I put it to her was that
they're kind of ridiculous in many ways (size, appearance, expense), but
if and only if they turned out to be so compelling those things ceased
to seem to matter much, they'd be worth considering seriously.

After we both listened to them, she began to speak of when, rather than
if, there'd be over-the-top horned objects in our living room.

The only time I'd listened to horns before that was some Klipschhorns
sometime in the late 70s... but their dynamic characteristics (whatever
their other difficulties) made a lasting impression on my young ears.

Well, a couple of years ago when I was first auditioning the RCS, I was
on the verge of sending it back because its analog outputs via the D/A
card sounded unpleasantly hard to my ears... but some other TacT users
convinced me I hadn't really heard it unless I heard it with a TacT amp,
too. They were right. The 2150 is one of the best-sounding D/A
converters I've ever heard (that subtle, raise-the-neck-hairs immediacy
and detail, but without ripping your ears off), and, oh yeah, it puts
out enough power to drive speakers too. The S2150 stayed, the D/A card
went back. (Interestingly, TacT's A/D card, for getting analog sources
into the box, sounds great.)

As for mods... so far the only significant mod I have in my 2.2x is one
of Anthony (Aberdeen in Vegas)'s drop-in switching power supplies --
which actually far outperforms the external linear I'd been using for
awhile. That and ditching the cheezily-filtered Power Entry Module for
a direct-wired one, since I'm using far better power filtering outside
the device. Some Wolff carbon-fiber-magic power cords calmed things
down a bit, too.

Might as well use slimserver and just do that for your whole

The Olive is a nice component, and for someone with a modest music

2006-02-15 Thread Kyle

I looked seriously at the Musica, but with my setup it would have had to
sit inside a cabinet, whereas the SB3 is small enough to sit out and
still comply with my WAF. One of the great features of the SB3 is the
screen, which you can read from across the room, whereas the Musica has
a very small display. I can't remember if you can have Musica display
over your TV screen, but I didn't want that, either. Other factors for
me were open source software and plugins which are regularly adding
functionality to the SB3 (I'm really hoping for a true IR pass-through
soon), the ease and low cost of adding storage to my system and being
able to back up my data to a separate hard drive (after you spend weeks
ripping your collection, you don't want to lose it). Then there is the
access to internet audio and data streams, etc. Cost was a bonus, but
not a showstopper. And I've now got an SB3 at home, an SB2 at the
beach and music backed up on two separate 250 gb hard drives for less
than the cost of a Musica.

I would start with the fact that you can get 3 SB3's for the price of 1
Musica and put them around your house and have high quality music
wherever you go. Then I would worry about having the hard disk
(although called "extremely quiet") in the room where I was wanting to
listen seriously to music. I'm not sure if there is also a fan in
there. Finally I would ask what happens when you fill up the 160Gb HDD
which, if you are serious about music and rip losslessly to FLAC, you
surely will. It is not clear if you could use the USB port to hook in
additional drives but then, of course, you'd have 2 potentially noisy
HDDs next to your stereo (one of which will probably have a bright blue
flashing disk access light).

I looked at the German version of Olive
(http://www.hermstedt.de/english/hifidelio/hifidelio.html) before

that you do not have free access to the music/data on the device. If you
rip music on it, you cannot copy that to your own hard disk (wihtout
hacking the box)! You even have to buy a back-up hard disk from them -
you cannot connect a standard USB disk.

Obviously people here on this forum are interested in high quality

My revised schematic is below. Did I understand what you recommended
for the power supply reservoir? Two more questions:

1. I assume all of those grounds get tied together?

2. I've never used one before, but the little perforated project boards
that you can buy at Radio Shack, etc. ... the ones with lots and lots of
copper-edged holes... are you supposed to "connect the dots" to make
connections by dragging solder across them? Or are you supposed to use
bits of wire to make connections?

jmb0,

Nice system!
Never heard that kind of horn-stuff in my life! I've had electrostats,
and normal dynamic, but never horns.

As an owner of an RCS 2.2x I'm most interested in what you think of the
S2150s. I also have some tips on how to bring the 2.2x to a whole new
level without paying much. (Did you have your 2.2x modified, BTW?)

I've posted this picture before, but it's a nice simple setup. I'm in
NZ, so 13 hours ahead of the UK. Nothing beats BBC Radio 4 show PM
first thing in the morning while I'm feeding my infant son.

AlienBBC, take a bow (off topic I know, but I can't take a photo of it,
and it deserves just as much adoration as any setup).

Regards, Ian

PS No, I wouldn't normally have a train on top. But my son's name is
Thomas, so no prizes for guessing his favourite toys!

Edit
PPS I've got a much better sounding system in the lounge, but using
internet radio I'd rather not put it on the amp for fear of spiking it
(occasionally get nasty noise during internet radio playback). So it's
a glorified kitchen radio most of the time.
