Where can I get one? - Nice. I'll put that on my wish list. - Not for me, but it sure is pretty. - Lame idea. Have the SD folks lost their minds? I have bout 8000 songs, 700 artists - a complete re-scan on the slower X6 from scratch takes about 3 hours. I set it to do this every now and again when I know I am not going to use it. If I just want to add a new album, you can 'browse music folder' to the album and it will be added. So full re-scans aren't necessary very often really, once you have a moderately tidy and well set up library. I do find that every few weeks or so Slimserver benefits from a re-start (not the whole NAS - that often runs for months)...slimserver will definitely slow down a bit over time. Overall though it all works a treat..and is suprisingly zippy actually...although I am increasingly nervous about upgrading slimserver versions as they seem to change the tag scanning algorithms with each versions which is irritating. -- bossanova808 bossanova808's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=619 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24534 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: more on room correction
Despite the WAF and the sophistication of the RC you first must move your listening position maybe closer to the end wall? Second apply at least some basic room treatment like first reflection absorption and bass traps and only then use the RC, result guaranteed. One problem is my primary listening position is almost directly in the center (in all three dimensions) of the room, which means right on top of the worst node for the fundamentals. And then it's at an antinode for the next mode up - it's really the worst possible position. So I may have to put up with some dips in the low frequencies, or maybe just rearrange my living room... -- opaqueice opaqueice's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4234 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25436 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

OS X preserves bit-perfect audio through the playback phase. Never use my Squeezeboxes anymore to be honest. A good friend has a Mac mini set up at his home with a small LCD display and a remote control and I have to say that it's a very compelling setup. While much more expensive than a Squeezebox, the system makes a very nice package with a reasonably small footprint, and the software Apple bundles for controlling the media server is quite good. He and I discussed the differences between that outfit and my Squeezeboxes (I have 3) and the list of advantages provided by the Squeezebox was rather short when compared with the Mini setup. From my perspective, size, price, audio quality and multi-unit control are all the reasons that I'm not trading in my SB's, but I can see the draw of such a system for folks trying to replace a single television/audio control system. The system is rich functionally (audio, video, pictures, Internet) and the interface it provides is nice looking and easy to use. By comparison, the audio-only facilities and two line scrolling text display of the Squeezebox do seem somewhat low tech. As I said, I'm not any less of a fan of my Squeezeboxes, but I'd encourage folks to take a look at these kinds of small computer setups to understand the value they provide. ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

One thing I would recommend (from personal experience) if your scan times are very long is to run a full clear and rescan with the debug flag "d_scan" on, and the log window opened up. If you have any old playlists or old file references which don't exist any more in your library, this can cause Slimserver to get into a loop and slow down your scan. Slimilarly, any old recursive links (to other parts of your music lib) may do the same thing. If you have a lot of songs, it can be easy to miss these when you tidy up your library. You will need to watch the log file as the scan starts and for the first few minutes. If you run the scan and the log output shows no errors, the slow scan time is far more likely to be down to your set up. -- Siduhe Siduhe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=723 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24534 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Hi there, thanks for your time, I've now given up with the ReadyNAS as a streamer I just use it as a storage medium, it was too much hassle, I had to reboot everytime I did a rescan (and reset the SB sometimes !) , also while it was scanning it was impossible to go to the web interface to check anything - the browser just reported "page unavailable", maybe it's my setup but I don't think so - so far I'm very dissappointed with the RN as a streamer , maybe I'll have another go sometime but I seem to be spending all my time messing about with it instead of listening to music, my collection is only 2000 or so tracks - how long should this take ? regards System A very fast Pentium processor Linux Fedora Core 5 100 Mbps nic -> Linksys Hub -> Linksys Wireless Router -- pkfox When the going gets weird - the weird turn pro. I'm yet to see TV or computer (fanless excluded) that don't produce at least some quiet but still noticeable hum. One of many reasons I applaud to Squeezebox. -- 325xi 325xi's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5661 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24957 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

If a voltage range is given, it usually implies a poorly regulated (or unregulated) output, and/or insufficient power (an inability to supply a higher current at the same voltage). You shouldn't get one which will not supply at least 1.5A at 5V. You can get one which supplies any amount of current in excess of this, the only downside being that the more current it can supply, the bigger (and more expensive) a linear PSU will be. > > Is linear or Switch mode the way to go? A new PSU is arguably only better if you can 'hear' the difference.. so do a blind test and see if you can! [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: more on room correction
Yes room correction appears to be the next big thing. If you are concerned about the measurement being only at one position why not measure at a number of positions and average it out if possible. Velodyne also incorporate room correction software with their Digital Drive(DD)series of subs. One of the problems with correcting at low frequencies is that many mics do not do the lower frequencies well. The RC software my friends use comes with parameter files for different microphones that adjust the incoming signal based on the known shortcomings of the mic itself(basically doing mic correction, before room correction). -- dlite dlite's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4885 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25436 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
