The Denon seems like a decent idea.. but maybe a bit on the overkill side. With a $2000 budget, you're better off tweaking the ratio to the speaker side. The AVR-887 might be a better deal for you. As for the speakers, the best thing you can do to make the 40% movies really good would be to make sure you center matches the mains. I have Definitive speakers that have identical drivers left/center/right. Having a smaller center is the worst thing you can do because 90% of the audio comes from there when watching movies or TV. Having identical speakers make urround pans from left to right very smooth. I demoed a lot of combinations when I bought the system many years ago, and having the drivers change is very noticeable. The brands of speakers that I would listen to in the price range you're looking for are: (Alphabetical order, to not give weight to any one brand) Definitive Infinity Paradigm NHT -- SuperQ SuperQ's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2139 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28597 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: New Home Theater System
There are currently some very good deals on the original Mirage Omnisat speakers, which listed for $250 each and can be had for $100 each at Vanns.com or Amazon. 5 of these would make for a very good, compact, WAF-ready speaker array - you'd still need a sub. I believe these would be a nice step up from the Klipsch. They are smaller, cheaper, they go lower (70Hz) and provide omnidirectional sound for easy integration into any room. Use the savings on a better sub or receiver. -- Pale Blue Ego Pale Blue Ego's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=110 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28597 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I've now plugged in my SB2 and synced it to the transporter so I can change between the two with a button press on my remote. After quite a bit of unscientific flicking between the two sources, my wife and I can definitely tell the difference. Further more, my wife was able to consistently identify the transporter with her eyes closed and me not telling her which source was which (I didn't try). One thing that did surprise me was how good the sb2 is. All the differences I'd at first identified in the transporter were still there in the sb2 (I find this is always the case when I listen to new gear then go back to the old). The transporter is all about subtleties. The soundstage is definitely better, there is definitely more detail, there is more space to the sound and there's more oomph to the dynamics. To quote my wife, "it sounds like something has opened up and let more air in". However, you need to listen carefully to hear this! If you're not really paying attention, you could miss the change between the sources. I think you'd pick it up in the overall sound over prolonged listening, however. Bottom line - think carefully before spending considerably more than on your other components! It may well be true that you can achieve better improvements through relative improvements in your amp, speakers etc. You wouldn't end up with something looking as good as the transporter, however, and I certainly don't regret it. I do not believe the difference is anywhere near as great as the capacitor and diode differences in the modded vs unmodded Elpac. -- Wayne1 Wayne1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1335 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28548 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

If you are using wireless, make sure that signal quality is good or you can experience dropouts. Back to the sound quality, this is a result of the good engineering done by Slimdevices. They have taken time to focus on sonic quality in addition to other features. One of the reasons for the improved sound is that the SB3 has very low jitter, and there is no CD-player error correction circuits at work. There are of course room for improvements. Thank you for the kind comments on the modded ELPAC. Supply IS getting scarce. Allied Electronics lists 10 in stock. Digi-Key lists 27 in stock. I believe ELPAC has discontinued this model in favor of a switching power supply. The D5 model has a 5 pin DIN connector on the end. This connector need to be cut off and a 2.5mm DC power connector soldered on. The D5 uses a four conductor cable from the PS to the connector. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Transporter DAC fed by DVD Issues?
OK, here is my understanding of the situation: Technically, the performance of the transporter alone should be superior to a transport driving the transporter, as the extra step will most likely add jitter. The transporter can act as a two channel DAC, so, if you setup your dvd player to output linear PCM from its digital output, then the transporter will be able to play back any cd's and dvd's as two channel stereo. If you have a seperate n-channel decoder for surround sound, then there are two possibilities. 1. connect one digital output from dvd player to transporter, connect the other from dvd player to decoder. 2. connect things digtally in a chain dvd->transporter->decoder. In that case, I am unsure as to whether the transporter will pass through the digital signal unmodifies, but I'm assuming it should do. -- bludragon bludragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1530 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28533 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I haven't seen that, but then I haven't used the buttons much. One thing I did notice is that the buttons are supported in slimserver as an additional remote control type - so the remote mapping files probably come into play. I've checked different server versions with different firmwares (18, 19, 21), but it's all the same :-( -- mherger Michael - http://www.herger.net/SlimCD - your SlimServer on a CD http://www.herger.net/slim - AlbumReview, Biography, MusicInfoSCR mherger's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=50 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28574 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Noise level of SB3
I'm a little puzzled by this discussion (I could say "I don't have this problem", but that might not be seen as helpful!). One thing that has been noted before is that, without external attentuation, the SB does have a rather higher output level than many other devices: so, if you compare its noise level in the way you've described with another device with a similar S/N ratio but a lower output level, the SB would seem noisier. So, instead of testing with the amp turned all the way up to the max, how about playing some loud music with the volume as high as you think you will ever go ... and then stop the SB and - at that volume - see if you can hear the hiss. Apologies if you've already done that and I've misread somewhere... You could be describing my experience with the modded elpac. I stayed up all night too. What a significant improvement. I bought one of the last 2 at 17.00, now I wish I had bought both to send to Bolder. The best 100.00 I ever spent on an upgrade. This is only a guess, but I imagine that as long as he goes digital to the Transporter, then Digital to the Home Theater, then surround sound should be unaffected. I am basing this assumption on the fact that a properly encoded file on your HD can stream 5.1 through a SqueezeBox to a Surround Receiver just fine. Transporter should be just passing that digital signal unaltered from the DVD player to his Surround receiver. -- jeffluckett jeffluckett's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6179 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28533 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Level of hiss is just too high. I thought that SB3 was a hi-fi product that was better than my sound card, that was the primary reason I bought it (instead of couple of meters of interconnect cables). Doesn't all the hiss corrupt the sound quality? M-Audio's sound card sounds much "better" with more airy sound, black between instruments is more pronounced and overall soundstage is more precise. -- dcolak dcolak's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5864 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28514 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

If you search the forum, you will find threads discussing the merits of using a pre-amp versus passive attenuator versus direct connection. As I have multiple sourcesand I bought the kit before the squeezebox, I went for a pre-amp/power solution. Well, I can verify that the noise we're experiencing is not the PSU (as Sean CEO rightly suggested). I put together a 5V DC-DC regulator using the LM317 and some other stuff, and fed this from a 12V lead acid battery. Same hiss from the SB3, regardless of playing, paused, booting, zero volume, max volume, whatever, so the noise floor of this baby is definitely out there.I'm going to measure this with an oscilloscope when I work out where I can borrow one...interested to know how you're going dcolak.
