A RAID style disc format would seem to preclude the record comanies from
selling additional copies of discs to people who scratch, mar, etc.
them. It is now the American way not to build things to last a long
time.

address other sample rates (but that will take more cpu crunch too...)

Sending everything to the SB as 24-bit flac is a (slight) advantage,
despite chewing more bandwidth than 16-bit flac or whatever, since the
DSP work then doesn't lose any resolution due to re-quantizing the
processed stream.

A friend of mine does high-end audio stuff (tube amps mostly)

He developed a prototype "CD Transport" that was a linux box with some
perl scripts, cdparanoia, and a decent spdif out. He made a front
panel user interface with basic CD player controls.. the system would
simply buffer the tracks to the disk.. if the user selected a different
track, it would stop riping and skip to the next track. Once completed
riping, it would keep a cache of those tracks around, and (I think it
might have been freedb style disc IDs) plays the tracks from disc. The
UI to select which disc to play was simple.. just put the disc in the
drive and it would play the wav files (or flac I think)

Given that the transporter has a word clock out, one could add an

Yep. I'm afraid Transporter wasn't really designed to compete with best
outboard DACs out there. It appears to be very refined source component,
with digital inputs as added value. I might be wrong though, as Sean
posted somewhere that they can add some input jitter reducing scheme on
software layer. Well, it would be interesting to hear more about that...

With a SB3 and Lavry you do have the advantage of being able to handle
more or different kinds of digital signals. If you pipe through some
potentially jittery component in the way -- say, an EQ unit -- the
Lavry will handle it. Again, in my experience, everything sounds the
same through the lavry.

The bit about decay in the review interests me a great deal.

Thanks for the info. I'm definitely not an expert in this area, so I'll

understood. but what cliveb was saying is that in addition to the
speed change you describe, the speed of the drive is also adjusted to
stay in sync with the clock of DAC to keep the bit flow into the buffer

trying to keep a mechanical drive in sync with a clock is not an easy

Sounds good... Assuming close qulaity levels, my major concern is
versatility. Paying less for Lavry combo, I can reuse Lavry if for some
reason SB goes out of use. The best thing about Lavry is not just how it
sounds, but rather how it behaves in less then ideal conditions, with
different sources, with different level of jitter. Being studio

This is how CD and DVD player's work. The data is recorded at
"constant linear velocity"- i.e. each bit on the disc is physically the
same size, so at the start of the disc when the laser is reading near
the spindle, the disc spins very fast. As the laser moves away from
the spindle, the disc slows down. The speed is constantly decreasing
as the disc is played/recorded.

This is why those high end belt drive CD players with 5 kg platters
that rotate with the disc seem very strange. The motor that drives
that assembly is going to have to do a lot of work to get the right
speed, mainly acting as a controlled brake once the
disc has been spun up to starting speed. All that mechanical stuff can
be done away with by using a cheap CDROM drive dumping the data into a
buffer.

The mechanism that moves the laser and focuses it is very slow compared
to the head positioners in a HDD. That is probably why DVDs don't use a
HDD storage/EC type scheme. Also, there is limited capacity in the
discs to store all that extra ED/EC info.

yep, those were the ones. ours used to wander around the computer room

So the speed of the transport motor is constantly changing to keep the
small buffer at an appropriate level? Seems like there is a very small
margin for error in this approach. If your statement is true, why do CD
players of similar componentry to the SB3 sound so much worse?

As I understand it, the error correction for Red Book audio is
distributed, but only nearby, and is nowhere near the quality of ECC
data level error correction in Yellow Book CD-ROM data discs. I think
Sean is suggesting that the disc be treated as a data disc rather than
a real-time delivery mechanism. Then you can go to another part of the
disc to pick up error correction information, fix the errors, and go
back filling the buffer with data. But this only works if you have a
big buffer that can handle the buffer draining while the error
correction takes place, and can then handle re-filling the buffer at
high speed by running the disc at multiple times the data consumption
rate.

You will still need some form of regulation and smoothing - batteries
produce electrical noise through their chemical reaction - if you are
coming straight off the battery. If you are suggesting plugging your
SB3 PSU into a UPS it will sound worse as almost all UPS's are designed
for PC's and the waveform they output is not sinusoidal. This is why
there are very few high end audio devices using battery power. One is
the $3,000 Sutherland Ph.D Phono stage
http://store.acousticsounds.com/browse_detail.cfm?Title_ID=11728§ion=equipment

There are a lot of people designing iPod headphone amplifiers using
batteries but as they are for portable use it is not surprising.

But if you want to have a go try a bit of googling for a design and let
us know.

method of supplying and regulating constant voltage regardless of load
and battery state. You then need to consider an on board charger or a
power meter to make sure you do not run out of juice mid-listening.

Easier (and cheaper) to use transformed mains although I seem to recall

I'll confess that I probably don't know what I'm talking about, but with

The only difficulty is to get a good record of the system and room to

The improvement to the sound is equal to one which could (if ever) be

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Transporter V Lavry10

2006-10-13 Thread Ben Diss

Let me speak to the specific differences I heard between the Transporter
connected directly to the amp and the SB2/Lavry (w/high-end power cable)
connected to the same amp with the same XLR cables.

- It's really, really, really close. If you don't have a super good
environment and a very revealing system, I doubt you could A/B it in a
short listening session.

- Transporter had lightly wider soundstage with instruments a bit more
precisely placed. If I closed my eyes and tried to imagine exactly
where an instrument was in front of me it was a narrower space with the
Transporter, but only slightly.

- Transporter resolved very high frequencies a tiny bit better.
Background cymbals were more recognizable, for example.

- Strong notes sustain better with the Transporter. A bass drum hit
with the same authority on both, but tended to trail off quicker with
the Lavry.

Overall, the Transporter is a tiny bit warmer to the Lavry's tiny bit
more analytic nature. If given the choice between the two for the same
cost, there is no question I would take the Transporter.

>From a value comparison ($1300 vs. $2000) it's a tough call if it's
worth the price difference on sound alone. For me, the additional
features of the Transporter are well worth the upgrade price. I had
only hoped that it would at least be as good as the Lavry and it
certainly met that criteria so I'll be getting one.

With the popularity of upgrading the SB3 power supply, I'm finding that

found a nice looking open (unboxed and unwired) power supply at
Grainger: Sola Silverline Series, 5V, 3A, linear, low noise, .05%
voltage regulation, short-circuit and over-voltage protection, 2.75

out that you consider the Lavry "smearing," though. Audio

there is always a matter of taste. I personally prefer it to the

Alas, modding something by one's self is beyond most people. The

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Loop for DSP, EQ, etc.

2006-10-13 Thread highdudgeon

Gosh, so many differences. First of all, I think Inguz is a huge step
in the right direction. I've read and re-read the literature and I
applaud the developers for having a great idea an executing it.

A few downsides. It is a bit limited, a bit complex, and it is a
Windows only application. A lot of people in the creative and academic
fields use macs and I'm one of them.

Still, I absolutely -- absolutely -- think they have the right idea!
Why not use your computers processing to analyze sound, create filters,
and attach them to the software? This is easier, cheaper, and no doubt
sonically cleaner than spending thousands of dollars on a TacT unit.
Remember: more stuff in the audio signal can only degrade sound. The
very best stuff just keeps it close to the source (your CD or
whatever). If I were a PC user, I would support them, 100%, even if I
didn't always use the software.

No, on the cheap side, the Behringer deq2496, like, on the expensive
side, the Z-Systems RDQ-1 (I have both), can operate in the digital
domain. This is nice because it means that, as with Inguz, you alter
the signal before it hits your DAC. If you have a good
jitter-eliminating DAC, then the device is effectivel transparent.

The Behringer is nice because it is quite versatile. The automated
function is a bit goofy and not really intended for home use. However,
the graphic EQ and parametric EQ functions are easy to use -- assuming
you have experience with this stuff -- and they pack quite a lot of
punch. To measure the room, I use a DBX RTA-M mic. I have had this
calibrated and I load the calibration file into my software. The mic
runs to a Presonus Firebox audio device, which is perfectly flat in
response, and that runs into my Powebook. There, the impulse is
recorded and analyzed by Fuzzmeasure, which is a powerful, professional
measurement software package. How do I get the impulse? Fuzzmeasure
shoots the sine sweep out the laptops audio output; there I have a
1/8->RCA splitter cable that runs to the amps (folks, you don't need a
$1,000 cable for this. We're testy frequency, not audio quallity.)
So, impulse, measure, look at results, tweak EQ, repeat.

No doubt, an even more automated system is superior. A dream for me
would be a plugin to Fuzzmeasure that would allow one to match real
measurements to target curves and then export filters to Slim Server.
Maybe if I buy the developere lunch for a year!

In the meantime, I would not hesitate to use Inguz, especially if
you're not familiar with manual EQ. It can be a slippery slope. I was
involved in music quite a bit in my youth, so it is not new to me; but,
it is not for everybody.

To be honest I was naively hoping that internet radio might be better
than my FM4 (as I had hoped with DAB). Radio 3 is about the only decent
quality broadcast on UK FM radio that I know of. Most FM stations are
appalling. And even BBC3 lacks the high frequencies (due to the FM
specification) that are so audible on CD - it just so happens that they
aren't very prevalent on classical music so it doesn't matter. I guess
DAB in theory could be quite good sound quality but in practice is
pretty rubbish, at least in the UK. There must be some decent quality
internet stations - just have to find them - and then hope they are
good music too!

errors. These have fed reasonable sized buffers prior to the output
stages.

That said, the CD's don't spin at 7200rpm and the players don't have
the same level of buffereing as your average HDD.

ok - will keep an eye on that website - looks like a higher quality
stream may be in the pipeline.

Also still curious if there is a way on SB3 on avoiding all internet
stations with a bit rate below say 128kbit? I thought there was but I
can't see it.

Thanks for your help .. Rob

The problem is, it's never going to sound as good as your FM4.
Ultimately, yeah the SB is great, but I don't see the point of internet
radio when you're listening to something you can get via FM. The SB is
no more convenient than a tuner (OK, your Quad may not be remote
control, but how often do you change channel?), it's always going to
sound worse than FM until they broadcast 500+kbps FLACs (never), so
stick to your radio.

What really annoys me is that Radio 3 is broadcast via DAB at 160kbps,
which is a lower rate than the sound part of their TV channels
(256kbps). It seems bizarre to have something where the audio is all
at worse quality to something where the audio is the side benefit.
Actually, it doesn't annoy me - it just makes me glad I haven't bought
a DAB tuner! :)

It was hoped last week that the original backlog of Transporter orders

break the sockets when I fit it! Will get some cleaner tho.

Well I'll see what the Audiolab stuff gets to, there's an 8000S and an
8000LX I've found so I'll see. The reviews I've read seem to point it
as good for the sort of sound I'm after and for the price I'm willing
to give it a shot! Speakers are only KEF Coda 9s (circa 1997ish) but so
far with every upgrade they've held their own and the bass is really
tight...at some point I'll get new speakers but not yet.house to

If you are UK based - paste the URL into the Tune in box and it should
work.

48kbps is higher than 40kbps - however the ASX format may be used later
to add a variety of bitrates. As it stands the WMA stream for R1-R4
seem to be trials and as such I think only limited resources are
applied to it.

The BBC are aware of the need to provide higher bandwidth are currently
running a multicast trial (now closed to general public) - you can see
the sort of stream being trialled here

128KBit can sound reasonable, although not fantastic. AlienBBC is

To be honest I can't see what bitrate AlienBBC is working at - is there

is there a way of filtering out all the stations with a bitrate below
say 128kbit?

2006-10-13 Thread bpa

The data rate of the BBC RealAudio streams is typically around 40kbps
except for Worldservice which is about 16kbps.

I think the BBC still wants to support Narrowband (dialup) users and
also they have a very large number of users so providing high speed
worldwide would require significant bandwidth and I think is not
considered to be the best way to spend the licence money. Perhaps this
is why the new WMA based UK only services may have higher rates.

You might want to try making some comparisons between
AlienBBC/Softsqueeze on your PC vs. listening to the same stations
"directly" using WMP or Real or whatever you have. It may well be that
the poor quality is all you are going to get - your download bandwidth,
your ISP, and the BBCs upload are all limited...

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Internet Radio Quality

2006-10-13 Thread rbl

I have just started using AlienBBC via my SB3, mainly for BBC3 and BBC4,
and unfortunately the quality is pretty bad. It is significantly worse
than my DAB which in itself is worse than my Quad FM tuner.

Is there a way to improve on this?

Also, from the myriad of internet stations out there, is there a way of
selecting ones with at least good sound quality? I believe there is a
way of setting a minimum bit rate of say 320KBit but I can't see it
anywhere.

I can't believe what I'm reading in the responses in this thread.

Every CD player, since the year dot (ok, 1983, when CD players were
introduced) has done precisely this. The data coming off the spinning
disc is decoded and placed into a small buffer, from where it is
clocked out by the master clock at the CD player's DAC. You don't need
megabytes of buffering to do this, because the DAC's clock is also used
to modulate the rate at which the disc is read.

And I'm a little surprised by Sean's statement about how data should be
distributed around the disc so that if a small area of the disc is
obliterated the data can still be recovered, because this is exactly
what is done on CDs, to a certain extent. Perhaps Sean was suggesting
that the way it's done doesn't go far enough, but the way I read his
post it seemed to imply it wasn't done at all.
