If you don't have an ATI tray icon then the process probably isn't
running, but I have to say I think you're barking up the wrong tree
there, even though the error was the same.

Have you tried running EAC in the 'compatability mode' of x64?
http://www.planetamd64.com/index.php?showtopic=27022

Did you download the wnaspi32.dll from Nero or an unknown source?
http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/eng/WNASPI32.DLL.html
Once again, make sure it's in the top level of the exactaudio directory
(EAC folder).

Did EAC get installed in the 'Program Files' folder (default I
believe)?

Then there are always other ripping apps which have been proven to work
on x64, but others have gotten EAC to work:

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: TP changes with break in

2006-10-25 Thread hirsch

My Transporter sounded awful out of the box, and if burn-in wasn't
happening, it would have been returned by now. Out of the box, the
mids are recessed. Bass is a smeared "one-note" affair that doesn't
integrate with any of the higher frequencies. After a few hours, the
mids start coming forward, and the bass begins to show some definition.
That is, you can actually hear the string being plucked or picked, as
opposed to simply the presence of bass noise. And no, the increased
definition in the low end isn't placebo. As the unit gets some playing
hours, there is definition present that simply wasn't there before. At
this stage of things, I'd rate the Transporter as a better sound than my
Ack! dAck!, but not up to the Bel Canto DAC2 yet. Nowhere close to any
of my other sources (VPI Scoutmaster, Ariston RD11s, Meridian G08,
Exemplar Denon 2900, Wadia 301). However, it's still early in the
burn-in process, and it's still changing. Thankfully.

At the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, Tyler Acoustics had a blind setup
where they were asking people to distinguish between two different
amplifiers. I tried it on the second day, and was able to tell the two
apart very easily. However, apparently I was only the fifth person of
all that had taken the test who was able to do that reliably. That
shocked me completely, but if a large majority of people (presumably
audiophiles at that locale) couldn't reliably tell the difference
between those amps, which was night and day to me in a blind setup, I
can at least understand why burn-in is controversial (and it has
nothing to do with placebo effects).

2006-10-25 Thread jimmy100

Wow, this is an old thread.

>DSOTM
I have the SACD and it's fantastic to listen to in multi channel, but
how many other artists/genres lend themselves to a 5.1 mix? When the
music is just instruments and vocals, the only option the sound
engineer has is to make you feel like you're in the band.
Notwithstanding the difficulty in doing this well without making it
gimicky, is this really the way the artist intended their music to be
heard?

>proper SACD player
Well I doubt my $200 universal player would qualify but the Sony ES
models mentioned by others in the thread must surely count.

5.1 music will only ever have niche appeal because it requires the
listener be in the sweet spot the whole time. It's not suitable for
background listening, can't be played on portable players through
headphones, and any sound quality difference over CD is probably
inaudible to most people; particularly given the poor quality of the
equipment in the average home. The final nail in the coffin is the
closed nature of the format.

I had high hopes for SACD when I got my first player, but like most on
this thread, the few albums I own have barely been out of the case
since I got my SB2.

Hi, newbie that's into the hd market and just caught this thread from
search. I was wondering why ms media player won't id an hdcd like it
use to. I have wmp 10. A previous version had a red light that came on
when I put in a hdcd cd. I have no way of knowing if it picks it up at
all...not in file properties or nothing.

Anyway that's not why I jumped in this thread. I just wanted to let
you know I've been downloading hdcd encoded retail flac files for
awhile now. I burn them to cd's and play them back on my hdcd external
player. The little hdcd light comes on and plays them fine.

I've even ripped retail hdcd discs with Nero and Plextools to test, in
both wave and flac formats, and all is good. I furthur tested the flac
files I made and converted them to wave with same success.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] 24/96 on Transporter: should it work?

2006-10-25 Thread Mark Lanctot

Just for HT tests, I have two 24/96 files: one FLAC and one WAV.

Since the Transporter supports 24/96 (I assume so from the overview
page: "Sample rates: 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 96kHz, Audio format: linear PCM,
16 or 24 bits per sample") I tried them out.

To my astonishment the WAV played! At 13824 kbps, I was amazed. But I
wasn't sure what I was hearing - it was supposed to be -Hotel
California- but instead it sounded like dirge music. Then about 2
minutes into the track the vocals started - I realized it was playing
at super-slow speed.

The FLAC file didn't play at all, even though its bitrate was 6956
kbps. The Transporter froze, then the left screen went dark. I could
only bring it back to life again by unplugging and replugging it in.

I'm not going to play 24/96 music all that often, but still, should it
have worked?

One other note: foobar stated that both tracks were 6-channel.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Suggestions for an up-to-date, available source for a linear PS

2006-10-25 Thread El Duderino

Hi,
This is my first post to the forum and I must say that the level of
knowledge and interest on these boards is impressive. The SB3 is now
hooked up to my separates system (NAD C541 CDP, NAD C320BEE amp,
Acoustic Energy Evo speakers, QED silver anniversary speaker wires,
Atlas Explorer Interconnects).

The sound quality is pretty good but I could not help but explore the
audiophile forums here, where I read several (long) threads on
upgrading to a linear power supply. This seems like an inexpensive
option to try and improve the sound, although there seems to be
significant controversy about whether this makes any difference at all.

In any case, I am looking for an inexpensive, plug-n-play, no
soldering/terminating/etc. required linear regulated power supply.
Unforunately, all those mentioned in previous threads including the
well regarded Elpac seem to be unavailable from online retailers. Are
there any US 120V input options that are available nowadays? Thanks in
advance.

Good points. I just hate to see open fleecing. McIntosh is one example

That would be me. I said that based on the website it looked like
vapourware - it does look more like a rendering than an actual picture;
but when I saw the YouTube video, I said I stood corrected - and I don't
mind apologizing again - no offence was intended it was merely an
observation.

There was certainly no ill will on that forum or on this one, just
people thinking out aloud about the whether the price tag is justified.
I don't know if it is, but I will keep an open mind.

The winaspi32.dll file was exactly the thing I was thinking might be
your problem. Its a problem that plagues many versions of windows (not

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Digital loop-through on Transporter?

I've got a Transporter on order but can't find anything in the manual
stating that you can pass-through any of the digital ins to a digital
out. I only see references made to using it as a D/A.

I have a Polk Audio XM receiver and am taking its optical SPDIF out
into my receiver. With the addition of the Transporter, I'd like to
loop the optical through so I don't have to run another 'hose'. Is
this even possible?

Thanks...

I've found some components to get worse before they get better during

that amp designers/manufacturers do most of their testing after the
amps have considerable playing time to ensure the caps are fully burned

I often wonder if this is pure placebo. So many reviewers start out
with "when i first plugged this in it sounded terrible, but after a few
days it sounded ok/great/the best thing I've ever heard"...

I don't buy this whole cable burn-in argument. I think it's simply an
artefact of human intelligence - ie it now sounds OK coz I'm used to
it...
I find it odd that nothing ever sounds worse after time...

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] REDGUM Amps with Transporter...?

2006-10-25 Thread truckfighters

does anyone know of the australian high-end brand, REDGUM?

has anyone heard one of these? I am really into buying just an REDGUM
amp (RG120m) and use the analog out of the transporter...

but I really would like to hear some opinions first, since they aren't
real cheap.

any comments appreciated.

I am from germany, no reviews here, but I heard in the US they are
quite wide-spread - in terms of high-end.

Their sound must be extraordinary, very high power while consuming very
low watts. Mosfet amps...

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter and Tact Millenium

2006-10-25 Thread harmonic

Hi i have just placed my order for the Transporter .
It will be used with my tact intergrated digital amp.

I will use the balanced digital output on the Transporter
But what about the volume control on the transporter
I would prefere to only control the level through the millenium amp
Are there other thing that i should be aware of when seting it up with
a Tact fully digital amp ?

regards

I am afraid the term 'audible' is relative, Sir.

My SB3's digital out changed over a period of time. I thought it was
the linear power supply that I added that made the difference. I did an
A/B with the included power supply, the difference with the linear
supply was subtle and realized the SB2 overall has changed overtime.

Re: warm-up. My earlier Int. Amp Audio Refinement Complete took atleast
20min to sound 'right'. Please dont tell me I am imagining this. I have
had that amp for quite a few years. That is why I like my current
digital amp. Sounds the same from the moment it is switched on
(probably a few seconds but I can never tell :-))

If caps can change over time, why not an amp with lots of caps inside.
Actually, it is the insulation which is changing, so even wires
'break-in'. When I got my Zu Ash, suddenly the bass was too tight and
hard. After a while, the sound was very comparable to my old digital
interconnect when I did a A/B.

Re: instruments and other devices - If it is digital it should not
matter (unless jitter is an issue). If analog, maybe people keep
recalibrating the equipment or the break in even by the time, the
machine is calibrated/certified.

I think the issue is real. We should not jump to simplistic
conclusions.

Agreed - My Marshall sounds much better after 10 mins of valve
warming!

Seems that after a few years your capacitors start to "die"
(electrolytics)...and bridge rectifiers (I've had a couple of those
actually crumble into dust!)

It's just supply and demand: all products are in production, but we
can't build enough of everything at the moment. RoHS isn't entirely the
reason, but if you're interested here is a good intro:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ROHS

FYI, all Transporters have been RoHS compliant from the beginning. For
Squeezebox, there is both RoHS and non-RoHS inventory being
distributed, but since we can only ship RoHS product into Europe, there
is a supply shortage until production catches up. Once the non-RoHS
stock is consumed, the USA shipments will also be RoHS-compliant.

Not sure about burn-in time for amps. But I had a Pioneer Amp that
sounded dull and unengaging when just turned on, improving after one or
two hours. I noticed this every day when coming home from work. Leaving
the amp on and it was OK (ish).

Not sure why, but I favourite hypothesis is that it has to do with the
transistors warming up and reaching ideal temperature.

I didn't pay close attention to the exact amount of time, but I found my
Transporter did change after a week or two of time (about 18 hours per
day). Am pretty sure it wasn't my imagination, because every couple of
days I would do an A/B with my Oracle/Dodson setup as a reference point
for changes. The Transporter started out to be a little rough, a
little "thumpy" in the bass, but cleaned up nicely after a week. Highs
became more refined, etc. This was mostly true for the analog outs.
Digital outs also seemed a little rough, but improved after just a
couple of days...

2006-10-25 Thread Rob Darling

Hello,

I am Rob Darling and I am indeed a part of Sooloos. I was the "guy"
who gave the demos at Magnolia.

We have kept a policy of staying away from forums- this is a site
someone else works hard to put up and pay for- but I felt that maybe
there was little bit of ill will developing that I should step in and
defray.

We did put the Classic Car Club/Sooloos video on youtube in response to
a post on the Sonos forum stating that we were vapourware. But the
Sonos forum seemed more interested in our model than the system and
things mostly ended there.

That has been the limit of our activity on-line. We just debuted a
month ago at CEDIA and have been busy since then working to finalize a
number of software changes and develop dealer relationships. We've
been watching the press closely and have been happy to see that we've
at least made a splash- believe me, it was pretty scary to walk into
the Denver convention center next to some of the biggest companies in
the world and try to break into a really rough business.

We are a new company and worked hard to develop what we think is a
great music server system that serves certain needs for certain
customers.

Our product is priced the way it is because it does a lot of things,
rather than asking the user to do a lot of things, which ends up being
expensive.

For example, it has two storage devices- a secondary and a primary-
that actually offer zero downtime redundancy and can be regenerated by
the customer, or any non-technology person, by simply switching two
cables and powering up. I'm sure you can imagine the hard drive cost
alone for a redundant pair of terabyte NAS'es.

For users with multiple homes, the systems synchronize their
collections.

We integrate all AMG metadata, including credits and reviews, and all
of it is easily searchable. We will soon offer a music store through
the box and that will also be searchable in the same way.

Our system is multi-zone and can be extended in any direction
independently- more control, storage, or zones are only added as
needed.

So, please understand that we are a different system from the
Squeezebox and Transporter, addressing pretty different needs. I
actually was shown both by the great sales folks at Magnolia and really
liked them.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact me. I notice
that a number of you are in the New York area- if you'd like a demo, we
can set something up.

Best,

Rob Darling

The product is amazing. High quality UI, hardware, software and price.
They are not even thinking about the common users market place. They
only want to sell this thing in the high end of the CEDIA market.
It is the same class people that buy Crestron automation systems to run
thier homes. They want high quality touch, high quality support and will
pay large some of money to have that.

Funny that it doesn't seem to apply if you buy it direct from Slim!

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: The Sooloos

2006-10-25 Thread BlueBlast

I spent a fair amount of time playing with the Sooloos at CEDIA and
talking with the developers.

First: Its not just a standard PC with a nice UI. They did a fair
amount of their own custom hardware as well as database work.

Second: Its blazingly fast. The response time is much much better than
any Windows/Linux media server I saw at CEDIA.

Third: It has some interesting features that I don't think are done
elsewhere, like simultaneously ripping to multiple lossless formats,
for example. The UI has a lot of depth to it as well.

No I don't work for SooLoos.

Is it worth 12k? Maybe not to you or me, but to some it will be.
Also, you have to realize that they spent 6 years developing this
system without any outside investment. They have to price it at a
level that they believe will allow them to recoup that investment.
They are not competing with SlimDevices etc. They are instead
competing with folks like Kaleidescape but oriented to 2 channel. Is
the Kaleidescape system worth 25k?

And I don't own any $1k cables (and never would).

I just got an email back from Progressive AV. They said something that
I haven't seen mentioned on these forums:
> Slim Devices have had issues with European RoHS legislation which has
> delayed Squeezebox 3 and Transporter stock arriving in to the UK.
RoHS, if you don't know, stands for "Restriction of Hazardous
Substances" and is an EU single market directive (ie. a rule imposed on
everyone by faceless and unaccountable bureaucrats in Brussels) that
came into force on 1st July. It basically bans certain substances in
electrical and electronic devices. So perhaps Squeezeboxes and
Transporters have something in them which could give little Johnny a
tummyache if he ate half a dozen of them. (Funny thing is, I had no
problem buying some components from RS recently that are not RoHS
compliant. Perhaps stock that's already in Europe may continue to be
sold, but importing new stuff gets blocked - anyone know more about
this?).

Marketing-speak

electronic components typically have lots of failures "infant mortality"
in the first minutes of use, and then low failures for a long time until
late in life, 5 to 10 years. Assuming you don't have power spikes, kids
pouring Koolaid into it, etc.

twenty years is longer than anyone cares, it is essentially "lifetime"
without using the words.

I see what you mean about amps - one day I'd like to go for Bryston
amps, and they do adhere to the burn-in idea:

At least they admit it's for weeding out failures, which I agree is
useful. As to "maturing" components, ?

Can't argue with a 20-year warranty though.

Exactly - think how expensive and critical a satellite is. There are
tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of solder joints. Every one
must be carefully inspected - there are actually "solder engineers"
that do this.

Every cable must be tested and checked as well. You don't want this to
fail in orbit!

I wonder if those guys believe in the concept of burn-in? I don't
think so. While they do power it up and leave various circuits
running, this is only to test it and make sure there are no defective
components (if it runs for 100 hours on the bench, it probably will for
another 100 000 hours in orbit), not to let it burn in.

They would definitely not want the operating characteristics to drift
over time.

The only pseudo-scientific explanation for burn-in I've seen mentioned
is "electron creep". Sounds shaky at best, and google can't even
locate any links on it.

> On the other hand your ears/brain are going to percieve changes whether
> or not they exist. So you decide which is more plausible...

Yes, the brain will adjust and get used to how things sound. You even
get used to speaker colouration - extremely flat FR speakers aren't
usually perceived as pleasant because our minds grow used to what
less-perfect speakers sound like.

On subtle things like sound, our brain and how it perceives/interprets
it plays a very large role. It can completely fool you, which is why
ABX tests are so important.

Mechanical things have real break in times, but they are usually a lot
shorter than people expect. An automobile could take a thousand miles,
but racing car motors are broken in within a mile or so. Drag racing
motors only live for four seconds or so, from rebuild to rebuild.

Hammocks require serious break in time.

There is accepted science that capacitors take a while to "form up".
I think the time is accurately measured in charge/discharge cycles,
rather than minutes. Folks rebuilding old radios use variable voltage
sources to slowly apply AC voltage over minutes.

There is also accepted management science about buyer's remorse.
I expect that most of the 'break-in' time associated with audiophile
stuff is really overcoming the buyer's remorse. That a solid state
amplifier would sound significantly better after 100 hours of operation
is hard for me to believe from an engineering view. And if it was real,
an audiophile would reasonably expect that the manufacturer make 100
hours of playing music be part of the manufacturing line process for
amps costing as much as a car.

While IANAEE, I seriously doubt any such phenomenon could exist.
Circuit components are simply pieces of metal and a few pieces of
semi-conductor stuck together in various configurations. Sending some
electrons flowing through them should have close to no effect on them
whatsoever. As small a change as re-arranging an interconnect cable or
moving a speaker wire should be vastly more important.

In fact if break-in existed it would be well known to researchers - in
physics people all the time build *extremely* sensitive electronic
devices, and if these changed over time it would screw up tons of
measurements.

On the other hand your ears/brain are going to percieve changes whether

Well, I totally agree that $12,000 is a ridiculous amount to pay for
that, if all you consider is the base functionality. My point was
precisely that such things as $5,000 amplifiers exist, when even the
vaunted ears of John Atkinson can't disitnguish between them in blind
tests. So even if you believe there may be an audible difference
between a $500 and a $5000 amp (and I do) it's a evidently a very
subtle one, and the base functionality is identical - far more so than
the SB compared to the Sooloos. And I won't even bring up $1000 wires.

So I think any audiophile, or at least anyone willing to consider
spending a significant amount on an amp, is on very precarious grounds
criticizing it. If people can afford to pay a lot for beauty and sleek
design, so what? At least they're getting something for their money,
unlike many things I could name in the audiophile world...

That is a good point, and one of the reasons I like the sanity of this

There is a break in time for fine classical guitars and spruce tops
take much longer than cedar tops to break inat least a year or
more.
Speakers also clearly have a break in period.
Granted, these are mechanical devices with moving parts.

An electronic component ,cold, out of the box seems to change within

Some claim that it will change in the 1st several 100 hours.

No need to buy Sooloos. Logitech already owns SD. Logitech (Harmony) is
already one of the top 4 or 5 AV Universal Remote Control (IR/RF Remote
"Interface") makers in the world. I never used the Sooloos and I'm not
suggesting that SD/Logitech emulate the Sooloos interface. I'm an
advocate for a 3rd party "optional" Universal remote customized for the
SB (Logitech now being the obvious 3rd party). A remote with a GUI
WiFi/IR/RF interface. If this Universal remote can also be made so that
one can hold it in "one" hand (like a MP3 player) it would be even
better.

I believe the tray is on the lower right corner, and the quick launch
icons are on the lower left- at least w/ previous versions.

At any rate, you could go into 'task manager' and kill the ATT process-
which is what the guy in the linked post did.

After searching around the 'digital-in' I read a couple post's where
andre (developer of EAC) said it will work fine w/ x64- and to just

Are you sure you got the right dll in the right folder?

If you have an ATI card, and have installed the driver AND utilities;
you will have a try icon (in the lower left corner of your task bar).
Right click it and select exit.

The title of the thread in the link provided below is the problem I am
having:

http://www.wilderssecurity.com/archive/index.php/t-111989.html

"Application failed to initialize properly (0xc005)" When I try to
open EAC I get an error message. That is as far as I can get.

I am using Windows XP x64 OS. The last post in the link provided seems
to have the solution to my problem. I am just unsure how to make the
fix.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Transporter wont work with Infrant NAS

2006-10-25 Thread Heuer

A formal release is a long way off. Basically Infrant had to do some
deep level changes to the firmware to get SS 6.5 to work but subsequent
releases will be stand alone. If you read the release notes you will see
what has been added in the beta - nothing controversial so you can use
the update without fear of data loss.

They intend to release 6.5.1 as soon as it is released by SD and this
will just be a SS add-on, but you will still need the "beta" firmware
installed to run it.
