I didn't label everything properly I guess, but the right opening is not a window, but an open archway to the dining room. The green thing in the front actually IS a fireplace (not TV), and the opening to the rear is another archway to the entryway. I was curious if the fact that the ceiling is arched, and the transition from the wall to ceiling is curved is a good thing or a bad thing. Otherwise, since the room is so hard and pretty sparse, I think I'll play around a bit with absorbtion and maybe make my own bass traps (plants rate extremely high on the WAF...) - maybe a 3AM session to get the creativity flowing! -- ob_kook SB2 --> Axiom passive pre --> Portal Paladin monoblocks --> Dynaudio Contour 1.3 MKII ob_kook's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1383 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30031 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

We took two reds and two whites and did a blind taste test. We tried to pick reasonably neutral wines (one of the reds was a Beaujolais, for example) so as to make it as hard as possible. Guess what - the difference was completely obvious. It wasn't ever necessary to taste twice, or taste the others before deciding - we immediately knew in each case from the first taste whether the wine was white or red. Try it yourself - it's just impossible to mistake them (at least for ordinary wines; you could of course make a "red" wine by coloring a white without changing the taste, but I assume that's not what you meant). On the other hand the thing about expensive labels I have no trouble believing - there was an "experiment" like that on a huge scale - the San Francisco wine competition - which clearly demonstrated it. -- opaqueice opaqueice's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4234 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=29025 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Mini SB3 system idea
I been thinking: what if I buy a transporter for my main stereo and reassign the SBs to the bedroom(1) / kitchen(2) what would these compact systems look like? So I moved my SB to the bedroom and did run some tests using three different sets of powered computer speakers: - Cheap $15 Altec Lansing 3 full range (few years old) bearable only at low volumes. - Cheap $15 Harman Kardon 3 full range (few years old) I could not recognize some of the instruments trash - Altec Lansing VS2321 2.1 Speaker $40. These sound quite good (for the price) but somewhat bulky due to the subwoofer third box. The additional problems with these speakers (typical of most PC speakers) are: bright LED and lack the auto power on feature (based on line IN signal from the SB). Being into active speaker DIY I could not stop myself from concocting a DIY solution to my ideal SB3 small system. I come out with these project requirements: - High quality sound (of course). - Auto power on and/or low standby consumption - No LED (thats an easy one) - Decent dynamic power - Good equalization at any volume (ability to enhance the low frequencies at low volume) - Possibly use off the shelf components. - Compact - make it look good - Keep the $ reasonable The result is this: - Speakers configuration: DIY two way stereo compact speakers, bi-amp - $ 75 Amps: 2 x SONIC IMPACT 5066 http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=300-952 - $54 Mid-Woofer: 2 x DAYTON RS125-4 5" REFERENCE SERIES WOOFER 4 OHM SPL: 91 dB, http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=295-370 - $46 Tweeter: 2 x TANG BAND 28-847SA SHIELDED NEODYMIUM 1 silk dome http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?PartNumber=264-822&raid=46&rak=264-822 - $120 Electronic crossover: DBX 223 stereo 2 way crossover Linkwitz-Riley 24dB/octave - $30 Power Supply 12 volt / 4 amp http://www.powerstream.com/ac-1245.htm - $100 misc. Total: > $500 plus time The two sonic impact PCB, DBX crossover PCB and related power supplies would be housed in a new enclosure. The power can be left always on thanks to the high efficiency of the Tripath. Expected system consumption at rest: 15 - 20W (a little high implement the auto power on feature?) The high efficiency mid woofer and bi-amping configuration will provide an effective power equivalent to 30 real watts per channel on average speakers. The DBX crossover will provide the ability to adjust gains for each driver (sort of a loudness, coarse EQ), and overall gain (to solve the famous SB volume control issue). If the tripath chip is as good as they say this may indeed be an interesting project. -- arge arge's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6155 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30087 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I ordered it shortly after the pre-order started, but hedged my bets on the marketing being over enthusiastic and had it shipped directly to Bolder Cables for Wayne to modify it. Now to avoid getting jumped on by my fellow members my expectations are high, I want to replace my GNSC 'Statement' Wadia 861se with the Transporter as I have ripped my CD collection and don't envision using a CD player. At present I use one of Patrick Dixon's SB+ squeezeboxes feeding the DAC section of the 861se and it's very good but the SB+ lacks a digital input which I need for my AV processor. As an aside, I'll never know for sure as I never got to hear the standard Transporter but from looking at the circuit topology of the Transporter and SB+ my 'gut' feeling is that the SB+ has the better performance of the two. And I'm sure those $10K CD transports I've heard about have something to them. If they didn't beat a device costing 1/5 as much (which includes a high-end DAC, mind you) they'd have some explaining to do. It's also all relative, of course. Sadly, most speakers sound much better out in the room, and that tends to have a terrible, if not totally unacceptable WAF. Quads, Maggies, etc have to be six feet or so from the back wall. They (and other dipoles) are not nearly as sensitive to side walls, floor and ceiling as normal box speakers, but you can't get the imaging unless they are out. And glorious imaging is what those speakers can deliver. > - there appears to be very little correction to take out individual > peaks and troughs. Just quite a smooth correction profile. I have switched the jumpers between pin 2 hot and pin 3 hot and still no results. I also do not get a sound out of the headphone jack with any of these configurations. I am beginning to think that it is my connection between the SB3 and the Lavry DA10. I am curious what cables others have used in this set-up. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Inguz DRC - odd results
Spent a few hours over the weekend and got the following results ROOM PLACEMENT - done with just one ESL 988 - I moved it around to all obvious places and sure the response changed, but not really for the better. Just different peaks and troughs. Top to bottom is still about 28dB, and much the same as in my first post on this thread. - placed a load of big heavy sofa cushions against the rear of the speaker and this helped a little, but nothing dramatic. Sound wasn't obviously better. - If I put the 988s way into the room then I did get a better frequency plot, but sadly it is completely unrealistic to use them there. INGUZ's DRC I very carefully carried out more sweeps at 1am and found the following, and used several DRC files: - the only setting that is listenable to is No Correction, Flatness=10. It actually sounds a lot better, considering I find my 988s a little flat and boring compared to say my old ESL 57s (but they can still can sound so much better than a box speaker)! From memory the tonal balance is closer to my ESL57s, but this is an awful lot of shifting of tonal balance considering this is a very expensive HiFi! I would go back to my ESL 57s but frankly their querks have got the better of me. - I worked with many .drc files that come as standard, I downloaded, or people suggested in this forum. Frankly they all sound similar but pretty bad. Oddly when using normal.drc downloaded from http://www.inguzaudio.com/Tools the two channels sounded quite different. Maybe something went wrong here, but it did happen with 2 sets of sweep files. - I measured the filters by plugging the SB3 straight into my PC via the US122L. The yellow plot and purple plots are No Correction & soft.drc respectively. No Correction is adding a lot of bass and treble. I have no idea what soft.drc is trying to do! Both with flatness=10. NB - I repeated this with new sweeps and got identical results. Which raises a couple of questions - why would the No Correction sound ok but the others sound terrible? If No Correction is good then the sweeps must be ok? I did take a lot of care over the sweeps to avoid clipping etc. - there appears to be very little correction to take out individual peaks and troughs. Just quite a smooth correction profile. - and most important, why do all except No Correction sound terrible!? Gosh what agreement, and I shall add to it. The SB3 is fine to drive a £2k system. I would get the SB3, plus an amp and speakers that use up only 75% of your budget. Live with it for a month, and tweak (PSU, DAC, better cables etc) only if you actually really want much better sounds. Get into speaker placement, contact cleaning and such like before spending huge sums on equipment. If you find it's good enough, have a splurge on Amazon. A slightly more radical bit of advice is to get stuff from ebay. A modern Chinese 40W valve amp plus a pair of Quad ESLs would be utterly nutty, but threaten the high end, which a pair of Wharfedales will never do. And if you don't like them, you can sell them at little or no loss. This advice only applies if you truly want to join us audio nutters though :) Adam -- adamslim SB3 into Derek Shek d2, Shanling CDT-100, Rotel RT-990BX, Esoteric Audio Research 859, Living Voice Auditorium IIs, Nordost cables adamslim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7355 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30074 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: TP changes with break in
Actually, I'm kind of into wine (it helps that my father-in-law runs a highly regarded winery) and definitely into single malts. In my experience, while novices couldn't identify specifically what it was that they *liked* about a particular drink, they could always pick out the "better" one from the lesser one. Of course, there is the UC Davis oenology department black cup test...where in, yes, double-blind tests experienced tasters scored 50% in distinguishing reds from whites. In another experiment, cheap and expensive wines were poured into different bottles. In a non-blind test, the expensive label wines (which were actually cheap) won the day. This is not a rumor; my brother-in-law went to school there. When it comes to audio, non-audiophile friends are often only mildly interested, if that much, in my systems. However, they could easily discern the difference between speakers, between movements in speaker position, DACs, etc. In a way, then, one could argue that testing by disinterested parties, while not conclusive, could be very interesting and could even help keep the community honest -- because these people don't come at the project with preconceptions. If you get trained musicians to do it, specifically, it would get very interesting. Why? Because these are people with far more ear training than any non-musician, and that includes audiophiles (quick: how many of you are able to identify and describe subtle key changes? Or perhaps tune a guitar or violin by ear?). Anyway, I digress. The point is that there is a great deal of snobbery and exclusivity in the audiophile community and that is not necessarily a good thing. Someone with a highly trained ear will outclass a non-musical audiophile any day of the week. PS, many, many, many excellent wines are sweet, fruity, and full-bodied. Many interesting and very fine cabernets (which are a rather commonplace wine and hardly the most interesting thing) are fruity. Tannic wines are a bit of a more tending toward unpleasant and many "dry" wines fall into that trap. rajacat;157808 Wrote: > I suspect that many people couldn't identify the various scotches in > your test. Yes, it does not seem plausible (I have a CS/EE degree). But the funny thing. Audio sounds good only when so many things are addressed. Ultimately, it is difficult to tell which one made a difference. Audioquest have always been touting their 'polished' surface wires. Many say, the smooth surface, just reduces the oxidation, causing bad dielectric creation at the conductor/insulation boundaries. Taste being one of the senses, is it not possible that hearing works in a similar way? Your ears getting tuned to one system and then (as you would postulate) unlike the taste buds, are able to instantaneously adjust to the next sound? You think the sense of hearing has zero time lag? I don't know, but I doubt it. Are ears not subject to 'sound retention or sound effect delay', in the same way as your sense of taste? I like the idea, as long as I can make jokes. :-) Back to the drawing board, then..although they did always say that the 12 step could work miracles... (I know, I know! Cheap shot. What a coincidence, I just got a Jameson for the Irish coffee. I did not like the Bacardi Gold with my rum cake and did not like it. So I thought a few bucks more for the Jameson is worth it. I did not try the stuff directly. But my sniff test and the irish cream taste shows the Jameson is very smooth. BTW, you cannot be an audiophile doing LUI (listening Under Influence). Is there a wall on the right? (Room > treatment there would probably make a difference). > Inguz, here is the layout of my room to scale and with some key dimensions. Does it answer your question about the right wall? Some notes that are not apparent: * speakers are on stands and the height just clears both the sofa and the chair (and of course all the tables). * The side table against the right wall is a very simple, open, two shelf affair with the amps on the bottom shelf and a vase and the SB on the upper. * The ceilings are about 102" along the vertical edges and slope up to 130" (about 11 feet) down the center. rounded, sloped corners as well. * floor is hardwood with an area rug (1940 original parquet, so no chance of getting more of it covered...) *plant is a big 7 ft palm that seems to make a difference where it is in terms of acoustic effect. Looking at the actual measurements, I wonder if I ought to widen the speakers a tad? I was going for a slightly elongated triangle and at the same time wanted to avoid the furniture (even though as noted, the stands bring the bottom of the speakers just to the height of the arms of the sofa and chair). Any suggestions welcome! (Please be objective though. or semi subjective. just as long as no one insults my mother.)
