Oh god what papers do you read! There is a famous and obvious solution
to this... Microsoft pays a % of the sale price on every Zune to the
record companies to compensate for piracy. Apple was asked to do the
same but refused. Indeed it's a tall order for manufactureres to do it
voluntarily. The obvious way to distrubute the money is based on survey
of pirate content although this is hard to measure for real small
artists... But as file sharing goes ballistic recovering enough money
to compensate for lost sales is going to add unrealistically to the
price of the machines.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Pollution over wire?

2007-05-09 Thread JohnSwenson

There IS a way for "dirty" ground from a digital environmnet to get over
a wire to a "clean" environment, its called a ground loop. In order for
this to happen there has to be a loop (hence the name!) A loop is
caused when there is more than one path that ground currents can take
from one environment to the other, as long as there is only one ground
path, there cannot be a loop, hence no contamination.

In order to make this work you have to be very careful about possible
"sneak paths" such as through power supplies etc. For example if you
have the analog outs connected as well as the S/PDIF out you now have a
loop. If you have an external supply that has a three prong plug in
which the ground pin is connected to the neg output wire, you can also
have a loop. A hard wired ethernet connection might be a possible loop,
but as has been mentioned most implementations use transformers and the
impedance of these is high enough that most ground noise will not go
through them. (just because something is DC isolated does not mean its
AC isolated, you have to take the impedances into account)

So if you are reasonably careful about isolating the squeezebox from
extrnal eleactrical connections, you probably will not be
"contaminating" a DAC with digital noise from the SB over the coaxial
S/PDIF out.

The above is also a primary reason why a lot of people like battery
powered digital gear, you have a much lower probability of having a
ground loop.

Can anyone answer this question with complete authority?
Does
1) SB3 and/or 2) TP support
a) 24/88.2 and/or b) 24/96 in
i) WMA Lossless and/or ii) FLAC
without transcoding at either server or device
with current server and firmware release levels
by design and allowing for bugs and artifacts caused by circumstances?
This seems to be a fraught question and yet it should be an explicit
technical yes or no for each cell value.
It also seems to me that this is a vulnerability in SD's master plan -
I am better off using a configurable PC and NAS as my system because at
least I can control the technical parameters explicitly, though I loose
convenience and elegance. With SD what I see is not always what I
get.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3 interference due to titanium dental implant?

2007-05-09 Thread tyler_durden

All these questions about the possibility of interference to the SB3
from stoves, microwave ovens, cell phones, vibrating toys, etc., has me
wondering if it is possible for the titanium implant and porcelain crown
in my skull to cause interference that would affect the sound of my SB3.
I mean, maybe the saliva in my mouth, the electrolyte that is my blood,
and the titanium metal and mercury-amalgam fillings could set up a sort
of battery and the current could generate a magnetic field.

Any ideas if this is something I should worry about?

I do like the sound very much - dynamic is a good description. The
improvement of adding the 2600A to the system and then running the two
amps bridged was significant, particularly in the base. I really like
it.

A 3400 + 2400 setup with a SB3 sitting on top of that stack would be
very nice indeed also:)

Hmm, so you actually do have a pre/pro and a multichannel amp - this
means those preouts are used already.

Knowing the calibre of Anthem equipment, there may be secondary
preouts? Otherwise you'll have to use a Y-adapter on the mains preouts
and run interconnects to both amps. This gets messy regarding how and
when to turn which amp on. Hmm.

Sorry, I think I missed the actual problem.

One solution might be get smaller front mains to leave connected to the
anthem, which will have the benefit of a subwoofer and only be used for
movies, while the real 2 ch main speakers are connected to the moscode.

Here's the page in the manual for audio connections :
http://www.anthemav.com/NewSitev2.0/Downloads/files/OwnersManuals/AVM50_v1_1x_Manual.pdf

As mark says you need to select analog bypass in a menu somewhere,
which it says is possible on any input. You could run the transporter
balanced output into the anthem, which also has balanced output or RCA.
Nice piece of equipment you have there!

2007-05-09 Thread Mark Lanctot

What 5.1 equipment do you have? If it has preouts, could you not attach
the 2-channel amp to the mains preouts? When you're listening to the
Transporter, use it as another source on the 5.1 but listen in DIRECT
or BYPASS mode. (This will essentially turn the 5.1 equipment into a
2-channel preamp.)

You may also consider a speaker switch - one position connects the 5.1
amp, the other the 2-channel amp, but that would be cumbersome. You'd
have to keep changing it back and forth.

You aren't going to be able to do this without changing wires when you
switch between HT and the transporter. Unfortunately the transporter
did not include a home theater bypass, which is what you need.

You CAN do this by just adding a 2 channel preamp into your system.
Make sure the preamp has a home theater bypass feature on it. Many do,
but not all.

Well, unless you have a means of getting the two front channels out of
your 5.1 amp and into one the TP inputs, you may be stuck. And I'm not
sure I'd call the TP a preamp, really - a multi-input DAC, perhaps.

I have a slightly similar setup, but don't have your problem as my main

take the preouts from my 5.1 amp and feed them into the 2-ch.

Could you find an alternative (integrated) amp?

Unfortunately, my HT (5.1) and two channel listening are done within the

connect my mains, run analog from the Transporter to the Moscode.

Now I'm stuck. Since the speakers are now connected to the Moscode,
and the Moscodes only two ins are used by the Transporter, how can I
listen to HT? Is my only option to disconnect the Transporter, and
connect the pre-amp to the Moscode each and every time I listen to one

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] DRM lessons from the Squeezebox

2007-05-09 Thread tomjtx

OK I will chime in again.

I strongly support fair use and I think current DRM restricts this and
ultimately hurts sales more than helps them.

That said, I would not copy someone's CD and keep it.
I have copied CDs to see if I like them and want to keep them. If I
want to keep them I buy them. If I don't like it I delete it.

To copy a Cd to keep is stealing revenue from the musician and I have a
problem with that.
Rationalizations that the artist doesn't see the revenue are just that
: rationalizations.

I am opposed to DRM. I would rather rely on the honesty of others than
restrict fair use, regardless of how naive this may seem.

I do believe that there will always be a lot of "stealing" , especially
among high school and college students. I also think this is an
"acceptable" loss when weighed against their income and ability to
"promote" a given artist.
I prefer to "believe" these students, when they get jobs and enter the
adult world will buy music.

I would rather risk "stealing" among a certain group than penalize
everyone with unfair DRM which restricts the fair use of the majority.

I do think the riaa , ascap etc. are little more than a mafia which
even extorts money from any business (resturaunts etc.) which play CD's
and have live music.

I don't think this means we should abolish copyright. Perhaps the law
needs to be refined to prevent the extortionist tactics of ASCAP etc.

The above was written after 2 glasses of a good cabernet while
listening to Ojos De Brujo: Techari.

Said writer/musician is preparing to cook angel hair pasta with fresh
gulf shrimp sauteed in virgin olive oil and garlic to be added to a
homemade tomatoe basil sauce.

Condiments include a fresh ground pecorino reggiano.

All the above is copyrighted and any attempts to duplicate will be
vigorously prosecuted.

Usually integrated refers to a stereo amp with built in preamp for
switching sources, volume control, etc.

A surround sound receiver OTOH has a processor that decodes the files
and amplifies five channels, plus sends an RCA signal to the subwoofer.

If you want to use two high quality stereo amps for the fronts and
rears, and one mono amp for the center, then you need a pre-pro, or
preamp processor, to decode the signal and send the appropriate RCA
signals to each amp, and the sub.

One that that a lot of people use just for two channel D/A plus HDCD is
the Enlightened Audio Designs Theater Master. They look like Rowland
equipment, are still serviced by a fellow who's name i forget, and can
be had for as little as $1k used.

PS keep austin weird!

I think this is going a bit fast. It's not easy to think of something
taxable that is associated only with listening to music on which
copyright hasn't been paid. So as a compromise the tax is applied to
something that can be used for other purposes as well. That's bad for
people that use lots of blank CDs, but it's good for everybody else and
for musicians (presumably). So this again is a question of balancing
the good of the many against the detriment of a few.

In any case, I share the skepticism here that a specific tax which gets
distributed to artists would be the best thing to replace music
copyrights with - it was just an idea. Does anyone have any other
suggestions?

You might be interested in this thread, where we compared a SB3 to a
transporter in a very high-end system:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35068

We also compared the SB3 analogue outs to an $8,000 Dodson DAC, and
briefly to a $4,000 Oracle CD1000. It was difficult to do a good
comparison as we had some difficulty getting the levels matched and it
wasn't our main goal, so I can't say anything firm, but if there were
any differences other than volume they were quite subtle.

Yep - another really well thought out piece of rubbish legislation.

I'm surprised no-one has suggested a blanket tax on paper and

Analogue Rights Management anyone?

well funnily enough, if it is good enough for gigabit networking...it's
going to be just fine for anything less demanding!

There is going to be no...NO...real difference between wired vs. wi-fi

Sweet! I used a pair of NADs in bridged mode for many years, a 7155

volumes I could hear a real difference.

I've though of picking up a used 3400 + 2400, but don't really have
room for a separate 2-channel system now.

IMHO there's a much bigger problem with the idea of a tax on CDs or
other media. One of my hobbies is photography, and I use blank CDs and
DVDs to store digital photos - original material in which I hold the
copyright.

So, the idea of paying a tax to the music industry for the storage
space I use is every bit as ludicrous and unjustified as suggesting I
should pay a tax to the fast food industry, or the coal mining
industry, or any other industry that has NO INTEREST WHATSOEVER in my
use of digital storage media for my own legitimate purposes.

I agree the Squeezebox is kinda hifi - it's good, but not involving
enough for me. I think it's a resolution thing, but it's very hard to
analyse, I find. The SB+ has cured it though!

But FM can offer the most amazing sound too. I have a Rotel 990BX, and
UK Radio 3 when it does live classical music can be simply beautiful -
we have the Proms season starting soon and I can't go this year
(newborns - no live music for a year!), so the tuner will be used every
night :)

So I'm with Ron - selling a good FM tuner is a no-no!

It's not too involved. I digitized the 4 channels with a soundcard,
did a LOT of noise cleanup and pop removal, then used software (SurCode
CD-DTS by Minnetonka) to create center and sub channels and do the final
encoding to DTS WAV.

Perhaps I should start selling C37-lacquer-coated isolation
transformers for the audiophile price of $249.99.

The comment wasn't meant to offend and was perhaps a question. I'm not
entirely sure how isolation transformers work. I think they would
completely block everything but the signal. I could be wrong here, and
"completely" is one of those absolute terms that can so frequently be
proven false to varying degrees. If they do let noise get through, the
question then becomes, is it enough that it would be immediately
apparent (in which case my question was, in fact, relevant) or is it
the subject of an audiophile debate?

Such a system we have here in the Netherlands and to be honest: It
doesn't work. The foundation that collects the tax on blank CD's has
around 70 million Euros waiting to be given to the artists... for more
than 3 years... And all they can do is babble away about how they
should divide it so each artist gets a fair share...

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this thread and have become more
educated about the issues involved in DRM as a result. It's terrific
that there are immensely qualified posters who are willing to engage
willyhoops in this discussion. It is a compliment to this community
that willyhoops is willing to voice a minority position opposed by many
forum regulars.

I would like to see more discussion around the trust relationships and
their security enforcement mechanisms, since that appears to me to be
at the heart of this debate. Someone posted an anlogy to credit
card/bank transactions initiated by the account holder and conducted
with a vendor, so that the security model of 'hidden key' is a
successful solution for that relationship.

Does the community's interest in secure retail transactions mean that
hackers are the only ones attempting to bypass the security in
financial systems? Are record companies and copyright estates the only
ones interested in a DRM system? Are there any other analagous
relationships, however imperfect, that we might use to shed more light
on the situation?

I hardly ever see folks mention Digital Preamps (Lexicon, Meridian,
etc.). This is what the SqueezeBox really shines on. Allowing me to put
ALL my music on the computer, not just CD's.

You should hear for example Blue Man Group or Dark Side of the Moon in
5.1. It will blow you away.

What's nice about these is you can Rip your music DVD-V's (DD/DTS) and
DVD-A's (usually in DTS form) as well.

Then the SqueezeBox can play back MultiChannel music in addition to 2
Channel Music.

Digital Preamps run the full array of Price/Performance from your basic
Yamamha/Denon to the top of the line Meridian/Lexicon.

We have such a "wonderful" system in Canada. It's turned into another
cash grab, but one of the original justifications for it was to
compensate artists for the "inevitable" copying that would occur. Yet
we still have this AND we also have DRM, the worst of both worlds. If
the intentions around the blank media tarriff were factual, copying a
CD would be entirely legal in Canada and DRM would be illegal (since it
prevents the supposedly legal copying of a CD), but this isn't the case.
Media companies conveniently skirt the issue and release CDs with the
same protections as the American releases.

Since many music releases can be obtained as downloads now, there's
talk of extending the tax to blank hard drives. These would be taxed
by the recording capacity. Could you imagine the extra cost added to a
500 GB drive if you consider how many 128 kbps MP3s could be fitted onto
it? Insanity. Plus, of course, most of these downloads can't be copied
anyway due to DRM.

Thankfully we don't have laws like the DMCA. Yet. I say "yet" because
the RIAA and MPAA are extending their tentacles over the border. The
MPAA, for example, has invented statistics showing that "most" pirated
movies come from Canada, the Montreal area to be specific, and
announced just yesterday that to punish us for our sins there will be
no more advanced screenings in the country. This is more to put
pressure on politicians to make our laws more in line with those of the
U.S.

One thing to be proud of though, about 6 months ago, several prominent
Canadian musicians spoke out against DRM. Unfortunately nothing has
become of it.

The problem with flat systems is that they tend to get distributed
unfairly. Any 'unidentifiable' income for music reproduction is
distributed in the same ratio as the total take, which is great for big
artists but clearly unfair - but can we come up with a better system?

Public funding is great, but in the UK it's being cut massively - we
have an Olympics in 2012, and we're going to decimate the classical
industry (and not even invest in grassroots sport) to pay for it!

On Mozart, he may have been profligate but he was arguably the greatest
music genius of all time. By any calculation, surely he should have
earned more in real terms than the £600m fortune that Paul 'not even
the most talented in his band' McCartney has amassed? Couldn't we
allow Wolfy a few parties? ;)

Some system of copyright protection is essential to reward the
successful artists, and some amount of state (or rich benefactor)
sponsorship should be there for the unrecognised talent. The balance
is hard to call, but I would fear that use of DRM (which strongly
favours the copyright holder) would push the balance towards highly
marketed artists, which would certainly not be a result I personally
would like to see.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] NAD vs Cambridge Audio Amp advice

2007-05-09 Thread Moko

Thanks for all the info, I think I will go the NAD way as the couple I
demoed sounded great.

Been looking on ebay & I am currently bidding on 370C which looks ideal
as it has plenty of power & more importantly a remote!

Any idea about speakers, as I have also seen a pair of B&W DM601 S2
speakers which I think are similar to the ones my brother has and raves
about. Are these up to a NAD370C?

I recently brought a Trends Audio TA10 amp for use with my computer to
drive a pair of LS3/5a clones. I am very pleased with the amp and the
resultant sound. It has plenty of power for these relatively
inefficient speakers, though I will note this is a seriously near-field
listening environment. The amp also drives my old Stax electrostatic
headphones quite nicely. I'd say the TA10 is a super buy for the money.

True - but home recording & playback equipment hasn't. Copying the
score for a symphony doesn't remove the need for an orchestra to play
it!

But do you happen to know if this was enforced by law? I know in the
states it wasn't possible to copyright musical scores until the early
to mid 19th century, but I don't know about the Holy Roman Empire in
the late 18th. In any case, if Mozart was a bad example, we can always
go back earlier in time - there's been music around for a long while
:-).

I know some that do... but perhaps more would if there was something
to replace it? For example, a tax of some sort (on blank CDs for
example) which went to a fund to support artists and public art/music
programs? A system of artists-in-residence at the federal, state,
county, city, university level? More public funding for local
orchestras and smaller ensembles? Done well, it could lead to a huge
increase in the amount of music being made, and people's exposure to
it. Done badly, it would lead to a bloated and ineffective
bureaucracy.

A less radical option is simply to reform the system as it stands, and
make sure most of the money goes directly to the artists and not to
middlemen. That already seems to be happening, and I think the current
struggles over DRM are part of it.

Because he was profligate, not because he had trouble making a living.
I've been to an apartment in Vienna he lived in - he had lots of money,
at least for a while. His patrons were grand dukes etc. Anyway the
point is there was a thriving music scene without copyright, as there
probably had been throughout human history.

Copying scores longhand really isn't very difficult, so that's not the
explanation.

What's different now is that there are new ways for musicians to make
money which never existed before. Now they can sell recordings, and,
in principle, earn a living. That's great, but it doesn't work - very
few musicians make any money that way. So the system is broken, it
isn't helping to create more art, and at the same time it's a great
restriction on the public. That's exactly the situation where the law
needs to be modified to make it less restrictive - but instead, the
trend is the opposite, probably because corporations do make a lot of
money from this, and they have a lot of power.

It's interesting that what is happening is precisely what Jefferson
feared - that creating even a limited monopoly like copyright would
inevitably lead corporations to gain more and more power. As a result
he was opposed to any form of copyright, and, ultimately, he may have
been correct.

I suspect it was simply that it was harder to copy in those days - no
media to record on, only live performances; no way to copy the scores
easily, either copy out long-hand or expensive printing process.

Today, we can rip a CD in minutes or copy the music files. We can also
easily reproduce scores/music.

Er, it's about 250 years out of date!

Actually DSD isn't encryption, it's just a different way of using
digital bits to encode an analogue waveform. The AK4396 DAC used in the
Transporter can actually decode it.

Given that SACD is backwards compatible with most CD players, the only
reason I can think of as to why it didn't take off, is that customers
simply didn't care enough about the higher quality, so didn't ask for
it. If it costs more (even fractionally more) to produce, but customers
don't really want it, then labels won't make them.

Puts the whole 'throw away your equipment so you can have 96/24
quality' argument into perspective, doesn't it?

I have an insatiable love for music which i have had since i was a wee
tacker. Music is my escape my nirvana.

With a collection of around 3000 cd's and growing 3000 albums and
shrinking (but never to be lost) i was after a better way of playing my
music. The vinyl is a different kettle of fish and i love the ritual
involved, it was more the Cd's on the floor and the room they take up.
also i wanted good quality 'convenient' music i that makes sense.

Being an member of some audio group discussion in Australia the
Squeezebox has come up a few times and i thought it time to
investigate. On the recommendation of a friend and without listening to
one i bought a SB3 and had it modified at Bolder before shipping to
Australia where it has since blown me away.

I joined this forum i guess to keep up with what advancements are going
on and what my next step will be most likely will be guided at some
stage by this forum and the associated products.

My setup is in my signature, im a skeptic when it comes to 'snake oil'
which abounds in HiFi, but each to their own. I also understand that
for me nothing is more important than the music and my passion is
driven by that.
