HI, Thanks so much for your encouraging words!

I'd love to make more of these. However, the limited supply of SB2's

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Ignuz Pink Noise will not play!

2007-05-13 Thread inguz

The way it works is not completely intuitive. Test signals only play
when you're playing music, and changes only start at the next track
(not immediately). See if it's behaving "correctly":

- Go to the "test signals" menu and select a signal (noise, sweep,
etc)
- Press ">>" (fast-forward) on the remote.
- Sometimes you need to fast-forward twice (for reasons I haven't
figured out yet).

The test signals only play when music is playing - and sometimes you
need to skip forward to the next track to start the process.

If you still don't hear the test signals, then check the log file (in
the application data folder) to see whether there's any activity. It
should log a few lines for each track or test signal played.

I installed the Ignuz room correction software, used the installer
(current version). It installed okay, followed the directions and
restarted Slimserver when indicated. Slimserver is all configured, EQ
shows up in the Plugins, but when I select Pink Noise to start the

everything is okay (music plays), but I can't get the Pink Noise - or
any of the Test Signals - to play.

I guess that's possible - but if it happened, couldn't you just
download the appropriate version of foobar2000 and convert your old
files over to FLAC or whatever?

It just seems to me that if ALAC is more convenient for some people,
that gain is probably worth what seems like a pretty minimal risk.

Is there any possibility that Apple would pull a M$ and render old
files incompatible with newer versions of the encoder/decoder? M$ does
it ALL the time with their so-called upgrades to their OS and Office
Suites. The only reason to do it is to force the masses to spend the
money on the "upgrade" to a 1000 more "features" that they don't need
anyway.

I don't understand the arguments against ALAC on the basis that it's
closed and therefore Apple may cease to support it. Is it really
reasonable to suppose that all of a sudden all software capable of
playing ALAC will disappear, leaving ALAC users up a creek?

The free open-source program foobar2000 will batch-convert ALAC to
FLAC, making it the work of a few moments to tell your computer to
convert your entire music collection (which could take a few hours with
current CPU speeds, but so what - let it run over night).

Personally I use FLAC, but I hate to see all this FUD being spread
about the dangers of ALAC.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Inguz equaliser stops when playing large FLAC file

2007-05-13 Thread rbl

Hi - I have a 230MB FLAC file, ripped using EAC. If I play it with the
Inguz equalizer (not not room correction) on two things happen. Firstly
there is a fraction of a second played right at the beginning of the
track which shouldn't be there. Secondly, and more importantly, it just
stops playing after 30 seconds or so. If I change Settings->Filtypes to
use the built in decoder it works fine.

Any ideas? I am running SS 6.5.0 - 9916 since last time I used a newer
version there seemed to be various problems with stopping/starting at
the end of the track. This is run on a 2.8GHz PC with 1.5GB memory on

Hi Anne!
Thanks for the kind comments on my design.

This is actually, the "Super Squeezebox" and it's not a commercial
design. Just a home project for the fun of it!

The SB+, OTOH, is available on the market and a completely different
animal.

Compared to the stock SB3, my unit has improved soundstaging with
better separation of individual instruments and voices. Sound is also
much more relaxed with less "bite" and harshness. Resolution is also
markedly increased.

All my music is in FLAC format for use on the SB3 and converted to MP3

do not need to have anything to do with ALAC or AAC unless you really

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Linn Records now doing FLAC

2007-05-13 Thread Olav Sunde
I checked this and I beleieve Linn is using the default setting of -5. I
have seen the same happen; high FLAC compression and 24 bit audio can
produce the "burbling" effect you describe. Reencoding to -0 or -1 fixes
this (I use an SB2). I noticed this first on material I recorded myself,
and later also on files from High Definition Tapetransfes and Linn.

iPods would also have to be updated for this to happen.

I can't see them selling FLAC files, but i wouldn't be surprised at
seeing ALAC being sold at a premium. I would have laughed at the idea a
few months ago, but since the Apple/EMI announcement of non-DRM tracks,
it is now possible i think.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] "Super Squeezebox" Project

2007-05-13 Thread Anne

You compared with an SB3 ?
And when is production up and running ??
If you have to compete with SB+ I would like to see some black anodized
faceplates as a choice also...and if I have to be really picky some "not
quite so sharp" edges..
Anyway, looks fabulous, would love to hear it !

I saw that rumour also. The suggestion is that, if this were to
happen, then it would be logical that iTunes would also be upgraded to
support flac which would give a big boost to those wanting to stream
flac to the SB but use the convenience of iTunes to manage their music.
Getting really left field now one could imagine the iTunes Store
offering downloadable flac versions of parts of their catalogue -
albeit at some kind of a premium.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Linn Records now doing FLAC

2007-05-13 Thread davep

Just an update on my earlier issue with the "burbling" effect on new
Linn Records 24/96 files (Claire Martin). I updated my flac to 1.1.4
and then ran a test file, re-encoding to a flac compression level of -0
and then tried playing it on the TP. Result was absolutely clean music
with no distortion artefacts discernible whatsoever.

I then went ahead and did a batch convert for the whole album directory
and now have the full album set to the lower compression rate. So far
all seems well.

Does anybody know what flac compression level Linn are using? Could it
be -8 perhaps, in order to minimise the size of the downloads?

The ONLY reson I can see to choose ALAC over FLAC is if you're going to
abandon the Squeezebox altogether and go with an Apple TV device (which
does have a very slick interface, BTW). But, you'll need a TV next to
it, and some of us still keep our Hi-Fis and home theaters in seperate
rooms.

On a related subject, I hear tell that QuickTime on Leopard will
support FLAC natively.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Importing Bel Canto to th UK

2007-05-13 Thread Mr_Sukebe

I had a look at importing a pair of A1000s myself last year. I'm not
wholy sure, but I don't believe that they auto adjust for voltage.
Note however that you do have another option, which is to buy from
another country, such as Singapore. I found a dealer out there who'd
sell me one at the same price as the US. Singapore are already 240v.
Note that the transport boxes aren't small, so getting them past
customs could be "fun".

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Linn Records now doing FLAC

2007-05-13 Thread Ron F .

As an experiment with my SB3, I tried changing the "flc flc" line in
convert.conf as described in bug report # 4886, and that completely
eliminated the stuttering when streaming a 96 KHz Linn Records flac
file to the SB3. I can run the large VU meters screen-saver with no
problem too. Apparently recoding the flac stream to compression level 0
drops the workload on the SB3 sufficiently that it no longer has a
problem. For the 96 KHz 24 bit files from Linn Records I now see a
streaming rate of approximately 2700 kbps!

On the other hand, there remains a high noise floor coming out of my
speaker's tweeters compared to the same file down-sampled to 48 kHz
using Audacity. I think the SB3 is converting/decimating the 96 kHz
stream into a 48 kHz stream in a way that does not result in a
high-fidelity output (dropping every other sample without a digital
filter?) Regardless, it does not sound right, although the stuttering
is taken care of.

I was interested in playing 96 kHz files, because I was thinking that
eventually I might get a TP, but I want to listen to some of those 96
kHz files now:) I don't want to download the 44.1 kHz versions, and
then purchase the higher quality versions later. I was thinking I could
download the high-quality versions now, and play them with the SB3
today, and then take advantage of the higher quality using a TP later.
Hmmm - that doesn't quite work.

The 96 kHz files sound much better converted to 48 kHz BEFORE they are
sent to the Squeezebox - and that means keeping two copies of this type
of content.

Maybe a good 48 kHz digital filter put into the firmware would fix the
noise floor issue?

-Ron
