Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Will this Elpac Power Supply Work?
The stock switcher has been shown to emit a lot of noise which might affect some systems but not others. This may be why some hear an improvement with a different psu and others don't. You might try plugging the wallwart into a power conditioner first to see if that helps. If you can audition a linear or buy a cheap one it can be fun to compare. I auditioned the 750.00 Bolder psu and their full modded SB. Not worth the money IMO. A stock, cheap (17.00) psu sounded just as good as the 750.00 bolder. The Bolder mods are a waste of money, IMO, IME. -- tomjtx tomjtx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7449 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35704 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I can't see how it can be. Well, you should not go completely crazy. With EQ (not that Inquz is likely to do this) you can pump up either end past what the amp or speakers can handle, and with speakers that can't do it, say go loud way up high, you can keep adding gain until you see smoke coming out. As much as the overdriven part worries, with analog EQ boxes, unless they cost megabucks (Neve, etc) doing more than 6dB or so can cause all sorts of phase weirdness. And phase wierdness can hurt fidelity more than mismatched levels. Even in the digital space, doing a lot of EQ tends to mess up the phase unless the algorithms are very careful. -- Pat http://www.pfarrell.com/music/slimserver/slimsoftware.html ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Why do VU meters exceed 0dB? Programming error?
I could be incorrect, but I believe that 0 VU represents -20 dBFS or 20 dB below full scale. A digital sample of sixteen 1s would be full scale. I think 20 dB below that is ... oh dear ... 00101000. VU is an average reading, so if a recording is holding at 0 VU, then it's RMS power is holding at about 20 dB below full scale? I think the Slimserver VU meter is reasonably accurate. Of course, I could be mistaken in all this:) If the VU meters are pegged, then there is a good chance the file is clipping against full scale, and the DAC is attempting to put out DC. -Ron -- Ron F. *Squeezebox setup:* wireless SB3 -> CI Audio VDA.2 DAC + VAC.1 PSU *Main rig:* NAD 7600 + NAD 2600A -> Phase Tech PC-6.5 speakers *Headphone rig:* Headroom Max -> Sennheiser 650s *Other stuff:* NAD C542 CDP, NAD 6300 Tape, Monster 5100 Power conditioner, Outlaw Audio cables Ron F.'s Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5616 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35742 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Whilst sincerely bowing to Eric's superior experience in these matters (the best I can manage is BBC Radio!) - there are times when mics are deliberately flipped out of phase - e.g. when close mic'ing an acoustic guitar with a mic on the hole and one on the neck - sometimes you flip to get a better overall mix. Also, the trick of putting a mic behind an open back combo as well as one in front... Also - just to muddy the waters - there are mic amps like the Focusrite's where you can put the phase between zero and 180 degree's... Of course there is the well known trick of putting the sub oop with the mains, depending on where it is in the room. As an aside, I've been playing (electric) guitar for 35+ years and never wondered if my guitar amps are inverting or not... so I just tried flipping the speaker wires...absolutely NO difference! -- Phil Leigh Phil Leigh's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=85 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35708 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] on recording and the audibility of polarity reversal
Talk about summing microphones reminds me of another WBAA story. For many years, up through the late 1980's, WBAA used RCA 44BX ribbon microphones for just about everything. When a guest was being interviewed in studio, they would sit across a small table from the interviewer with the 44BX in the center of the table. Since the 44BX is bidirectional, it worked great. In the mid 1980's, we started using a pair of AKG D224E's for interviews. The pair was mounted on a single stand in the center of the table, one pointing at the interviewer and one pointing the opposite direction at the guest. Unfortunately, the mixer had no polarity reverse switch, so we just wired up a short polarity reverse cable for one of the mics. This worked out reasonably well. It's been years since I've worked there, but I think in the remodeled studios they have a lot more physical separation between microphones, so it isn't as critical to play polarity games. -- Timothy Stockman Timothy Stockman's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8867 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35708 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

The ELPAC you have linked to is a switching power supply. The ELPAC WM220 is a very popular LINEAR, REGULATED power supply that has been used by many SB owners. They can be found used and/or surplus on E-Bay quite often The 5 pin DIN connector will have to be removed and a 2.5 mm DC connector soldered in place. -- Wayne1 Wayne1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1335 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35704 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Do you remember if any of the sources on which you could hear a difference were complex musical selections, or were they all tones or isolated sounds of some type? Most importantly, was it ever the case that one way sounded better - like an accurate reproduction of the original sound? Or did they just sound different? The only published work on this I've been able to find is http://www.aes.org/e-lib/browse.cfm?elib=6950 . They find that polarity is easily audible on special test tones (I've verified that, it's easy) but for normal music it's mostly inaudible. In fact the only acoustic sounds they identify for which the results are positive are solo piano and solo (acoustic) guitar, which is odd (since these actually have the most symmetric waveforms). For kick drum polarity wasn't audible in their experiment. They speculate that the audibility for the piano and guitar has something to do with transients, such as the initial phase of the sound. However that initial phase varies as you move in a circle around a guitar player, so one might expect that even if the effect is audible, it's not any more realistic one way than the other. -- opaqueice opaqueice's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4234 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35708 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Inguz Audio tips and initial impressions
I would like to share my initial impressions as well. But first of all I would like to thank Inguz for this amazing piece of work! :-) When using normal.drc from Inguz and flat.txt as a target curve, room correction sounds very very bright (way too much treble so to speak) Then I tried normal.drc but bk-3-spline instead, still way way too bright sound. Even when configuring flatness to 3 instead of 10. When using soft.drc and bk-3-spline and flatness at 3 again things start to sound better but still a bit bright :P Apart from my issues with this weird frequency behaviour I certainly hear the great great potential of this room correction system! Actually after listening to this corrected sound I found it hard to turn back to the uncorrected sound. I'm wondering why the corrected sound has soo much treble. For now I guess I will blame my measurements. I do use a behringer ecm8000 microphone together with the behringer tube mic amplifier and a cheap usb soundcard. I guess I might have to replace the soundcard to start with. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] on recording and the audibility of polarity reversal
The human auditory system is sensitive to absolute phase because the cells that generate signals from vibrations of the cillia in the basilar membrane are half-wave rectifiers. Many sounds have asymmetric waveforms, especially voice, horns, and percussion. The audibility of these signals can be affected by absolute phase reversal if these sounds are prominent, and do not have any reverb. Many years ago, I listened to a double blind demo of absolute phase differences at an AES chapter meeting in one of the reference listening rooms at Dolby lab's headquarters in SF. And for many sources, the effect is not subtle. For others however, especially those with reverb or ambience, the effect is unnoticable. Sorry, I think we're miscommunicating. I'm worried about what happens when you mix down several mics into one channel, and several more into the other. I agree about "placing" a sound, but that's exactly the point - we only have two ears! So when you use multiple mics scattered around the recording venue and then mix them together, I just can't see how that can be done without badly messing up all that timing information. > > The same holds true in multi-microphone recording techniques. Your > example of a 20Hz wavelength being recorded to two mics 30-feet apart > is not really valid, unless you're recording Bach's Concerto for Solo > 20Hz Oscillator music is multi-frequency with varied > frequencies/wavelengths happening all the time. Sorry, it wasn't 20Hz, it was 1kHz. The point was that the wavelength of all the most important frequencies in music is LESS than a foot or two, so mics farther apart than that are completely out of phase for essentially every sound of interest. Using your example of 30 feet they would only be in phase for frequencies well below 20Hz. > IMHO, there is no possible way to have absolute phase coherency at all > frequencies at all times in an acoustic recording environment. > Actually, if you could, it would probably sound lifeless and sterile > because our ears and brain don't work that way. Really? Have you ever listened to a binaural recording (that's a recording made with two mics, one per channel, spaced about as far apart as someone's ears)? Through headphones, a good binaural recording sounds eerily lifelike - more realistic and alive than anything I've ever heard played over a stereo system. I'm wondering whether these issues are part of the reason. > Many studio reference monitor manufacturers have incorporated phase > coherency (or TIME ALIGNMENT) into their monitors, but it's usually > done by placing the voice-coil of each individual driver in the same > physical plane, allowing the combined sound to leave the 'box' as a > phase aligned source. What happens in the room before it hits your > ears is part of the ear/brain experience that can't be compensated for > UNLESS the music was recorded, mixed and listened to in an anechoic > chamber. Doesn't sound very exciting to me. I don't really see the point in worrying about that when the music your speakers are playing already has hopelessly distorted phase information. I have a small collection of recordings that sound extremely realistic to me played through stereo speakers (Patricia Barber is a good example) - I wonder whether those were made using minimal mic-ing? But I'm also confused why nearly everybody uses many mics when recording - I'm sure there's a good reason! Is it just to allow the engineer more control over the balance of the recording? -- opaqueice opaqueice's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4234 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35708 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Olive Musica
Hi- The SB3 and the Olive aren't meant to address exactly the same market. I've got experience with both. The Olive is meant to give high quality digital audio to someone who doesn't want to integrate a PC into their audio setup - that is, a digital music hub as independent stereo system component. Basically, w/out a PC and without any knowledge of ripping, you can stick a CD in an Olive and it will automatically rip in the format you want to the Olive's HD and tag the files. Literally as easy as placing the CD in the unit. In playback it functions in much the same way as an iPod. It can also double as the CD player/transport of your audio system and stream internet radio, all without a PC. The SB3 (and transporter) are more in the niche for someone who has a lot of music on ripped to a PC (or NAS) and wants access to it - both in other rooms and to the stereo system. To clear up some out of date information: 1. The Olive can also be multi-room over an its own WAN (there is even a special add on device for mulitroom access.) 2. In addition, the new firmware (installable by direct download to the unit) allows for connection of both USB and NAS HDD (either directly to the Olive or over a home network), so HDD space is no longer an issue. 3. Files can be moved over your network to and from the Olive, but copying files from the Olive to PC is possible only during an intermediate stage when files are first ripped, not after they have gone through final import into the system. 4. I listen using the Olive sitting about 1 foot from it. I don't hear any noise when playing files from the HD, only when inserting a CD. Finally, the Olive also allows for direct recording of analogue sources, which are digitized and recorded to its HDD. I've used it to record about 100 LP's and it does a great job. The recordings are excellent (using the built in level control and it's default settings) and the software also does a good job of splitting the LP into individual tracks. Each unit has its advantages and disadvantages. I think the most important issue when deciding between the 2 types of systems is the issue of whether you do or don't want your music listening to be PC dependent. For those who don't have problems including a PC in the audio equation, the SB3 and Transporter are probably a better solution. For those with a desire to eliminate the PC from their audio system, the Olive is probably a better choice.
