Seriously, it's more likely your ears that are "warming up" (they vary
over time WAY more than the electronics).

I have a ton of Meridian gear (including 26 channels of Meridian DACs)
and it sounds the same stone cold or warm. I even have X10 switches on
everything to shut things down stone cold when not in use.

It might be interesting to have a SB4 that had the same nice VFD
display, but included a video output to connect to a monitor.

This would allow display of photo images and also cover art and maybe
tag information.

Actually, if you use iTunes, the Slimserver is pretty easy to use. Just
tell it to use iTunes playlists. I'm not saying that this is the best
way to manage your music, just that a LOT of people are comfortable
with iTunes.

I think the bigger problem is that you need at least a decent music
system to to take advantage of a SB. I am shocked to see what some
people connect their iPods to and call it music.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] god another DAC thread...

2007-06-10 Thread ratso

sorry. maybe this would be helpful. i have kinda been wondering for a
while if getting a DAC would actually improve my sound or if it would
just be one of those thing that you plug in and go "well i THINK i hear
a difference (like my 'upgraded' power supply). So i started looking at
some of the cheaper DAC's out there, which reviewers have been
comparing to ones costing much more like the LITE-AH. And i finally
settled on moodlab's Concept - good reviews, small, stylish, and at
$200 what the hell? My gear (and my ear) are not audiophile quality,
but they're not crap either - i power a mid
priced denon AV reciever through Infiniti IL 50's. I plan on building a
mid priced 2 channel reference system as soon as possible. So what do i
think? I listened to 'a thousand beautiful things' from annie lennox'
bare cd through my SB3. I played it back to back with DAC on and off to
get an A/B comparison. This song features a smooth clear recording,
annie's beautiful voice and a sudden blast of bass that shakes my house
at the start through the 50's powered subs. I was suprised that my first
impression of the DAC was it actually tamed out that bass blast some.
But as the sound went on, i found the bass more integrated and smooth
in the song. I could also hear more detail in the background including
a synthesized "wind" at the end of the first
verse i had never noticed before. Was i just listening harder? Or
making it up to justify my purchase? No, i think i can say it clearly
made an audible difference. Enough to be happy with my purchase? Yes,
$200 well spent i think. Would i be happy if it was $1200 like the
DAC's this one is compared to in some reviews?
NO.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Will a Meridian 556 enhance the SB3?

2007-06-10 Thread kphinney

The Meridian 566.20 gives an improved depth to the music that is most
noticeable with classical and Jewel (don't ask - wife's pick) while not
noticeable with some of the female vocalists I prefer. Norah Jones
didn't even get a minor bump. In the spirit of full disclosure I am
still breaking in the Omega speaker (Fostex drivers).

The 566 definitely sounds better after it has been left on for a while.
Something I didn't have the luxury of doing when I demo'd it. A
comparison now may give better results.

Thanks for the input.

I would advocate the use of a VFD as opposed to a monochrome LCD panels
that a lot of poeple use in modified PCs these days.

However, a 7" full colour TFT screen that we might have full control
over is a completely different proposition :)

A dockable color touchscreen display/remote is a great idea that could
still be operated by IR when docked and send IR when undocked.

I've seen some that will periodically poll the Internet for new
pictures, which would be fine for screenshow use, but not adequate for
having something like cover art that changes when music changes, or
when you scroll through Browse items or Search results. At this point,
that sort of tightly-coupled album art changes seems to require
building a custom digital pitcure frame from either an old laptop
(pretty common among hardware hackers) or building a solid state frame
from something like a Gumstix device and LCD screen.

It's worth noting that many people over the years have advanced the
position that VFD displays such as those used in the Squeezebox and
Transporter are much more readable than LCD displays in typical
across-the-room scenarios. My Squeezeboxes serve as audio and
information devices, and I'd rather have the current clear VFD than a
less readable LCD, even if the LCD could do more.

That was what I had in mind - the display would be a bit larger than
the current one, but color and much higher resolution, so while in its
dock you could easily see it from a distance. It could display album
art, which would be great...

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Sb4 ?

2007-06-10 Thread funkstar

I still think a complementary product rather than a replacement is
likely.

With Jive out in the wild i think there is a lot that could be done
with integrating a full colour LCD screen into a SB type device. In
fact while they are at it, why not include the ability to stream photos
and perhaps videos to the screen? There are loads of digital photo
frames out there that play MP3s and videos, but I've yet to see any
network-able ones. So you still need to copy your photos a memory card
before using them.

An SD version would let you have your photos on your SlimServer along
with your music. That would be pretty cool if you ask me :)

I don't want another remote, the reason I bought my Harmony 688 was to
get rid of all the remotes. I'm sure some people will like a remote,
I'm just hoping that this doesn't mean the display on the SB will be
removed.

Of course if the display on the remote was large enough so the contents
on it could be seen from a few meters away I would still be happy. I
could then keep the remote in the docking station at the SB, I would
keep controlling the SB with the Harmony 688 with its hard buttons
which can be easily found in a dark room.
