For serious audiophiles, the only option is a lossless format. Which lossless is debatable, and there are iPod firmware hacks that support FLAC in iPods. But using lossless is not usually worth it in an iPod. It not only takes more space, so you get fewer sons, but uses more disk read time, takes more battery (shorter play time, etc.) and most iPod uses (walking, bus riding, etc) don't need maximum fidelity. Plus most iPod headphones suck sonically. use one of the many flac2mp3 utilities to convert a flac library to mp3 for use in your iPod. Disks are cheap. the only downside of two libraries is keeping them in sync. -- Pat http://www.pfarrell.com/music/slimserver/slimsoftware.html ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

rubi1971;214423 Wrote: > FLAC? FLAC is a widely used lossless compression codec, preferred by many because of its proven solidity, its independence from the likes of MS and Apple, and the fact that a FLAC decoder is built right into the SB3 and Transporter firmware. This allows you to stream your data as FLAC, thus needing only about 50% of the network bandwidth of uncompressed music, and restore to original music file at the player end. As for the decision on a single compromise between quality and space, only you can really say where that sits. If you move away from using lossless you will compromise the quality via the SB but many people around here use medium rate mp3 for all their music and are fine with that. You could do a test by encoding a favourite track in Apple Lossless format and also in one or two compressed versions and then play them back in turn via the SB and see if the difference is a) discernable to you, and b) matters. davep -- davep davep's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=61 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36780 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Newbie
The decision is between maximum quality for use on your SB (or Transporter)and consumption of space on your iPod. Since you are posting in the Audiophiles section of the forum I am assuming you would want to use some form of lossless compression for the files to be played via the SB. The problem then is that these are large files and as such are not ideal for an iPod if you want to keep a large collection available without lots of Smart Playlist shuffling. For iTunes users the only lossless format is Apple Lossless. This will work on most iPods but not on the Shuffle (you'd only get a small number of files into the space there anyway so no real surprise). If you want to keep lossless for the SB but have a more compressed version for the iPod then you need to have two libraries and run the second one in mp3. Adam's reference to lame was regarding settings for the mp3 encoder you could use. iTunes 7 is supposed to support multiple libraries so that would allow one for the SB in lossless and one for the iPod in compressed. Since I don't actually do this myself (all FLAC here) I am not sure of the details of how this would best be managed. davep -- davep davep's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=61 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36780 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Balanced vs Single ended output from Transporter
Surprised nobody yet has mentioned, that using a balanced connection can eliminate the audibility of a ground loop between components. Remember that a ground loop doesn't always contribute a 50/60Hz hum, but can also produce the effect that some describe as a "veil" over the sound, i.e. limiting of the frequency extremes and reduction of overall sound clarity and micro detail. Incidentally, the same effect can occur from external EM field noise picked up by interconnects, even over distances as short as approx. 0.5m in a noisy environment - but of course even more so with longer distances and greater resulting exposures. This makes the noise-rejecting ability of balanced connections equally, but separately, relevant. -- NewBuyer NewBuyer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7862 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36774 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Well, there is a reason why there *might* be a difference - the electrical noise within a computer case is generally very high, and could easily do nasty things to the level of jitter on the digital output. Whether thats important in your case will depend on the ability of the Arcam's DAC to reject jitter. Just listen! If you can't hear a difference then there isn't one, and you might as well liberate the SB to work for you in another room... IMHO. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] s/pdf SB better than s/pdf soundcard pc?
Hi, I've got a SB3 and I'm very satisfied. But, I just replaced my whole stereo to the room where my computer is. And I bought a new motherboard (Asus P5B) with onboard audio and a s/pdf output. So far, I connected the SB3 via toslink to an Arcam DAC. Now I can also connect the Arcam directly to the s/pdf of the Asus (thus bypassing the SB3). What do you guys think: is the s/pdf of the SB3 better than that of the Asus? I just did a small listening comparison. There seems to be a slight difference, but I'm not sure. Is there a technical reason why there should (or should not) be a difference between the two s/pdf signals sent to the Arcam DAC? Thanks all. I have the cables since before and the pre amp accepts XLR. However, the manufacturer (Audionet) recommends using RCA since the design of their amp(s) is not balanced and it sounds better with RCA unless the cables are somewhere around 10 m or longer. I use 1 m cables from TP to pre. Then when listening, using RCA sounded better to me. Balanced cabling may have an advantage over long distances (several meters) or in extremely noisy environments. Over short distances there is really no advantage over RCA AFAICT. Transporter's RCA outputs are driven by an active balun circuit, which is fed by the exact same signal that goes directly out of the XLR. So it takes advantage of the balanced filter/DAC stages upstream from there. In terms of objective metrics (SNR, THD etc) there is no appreciable difference between Transporter's outputs, for short cables. -- seanadams seanadams's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36774 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

That's why there have been products like Cramolin, Tweak and Caig to clean surface crud on the connectors. Yes, it definitely helps. And to some extent, puliing the connector on and off scrubs the connection point a bit. But getting back to our friend the oxidized cable, Would the connector really tell the whole story? Could not oxidation affect resistance in the cable itself? I think the integrity of the cable needs to be looked at in its totality. Taken to it's logical conclusion, I could dig an old, rusty coat hanger out of the backyard, stick it between two connectors and, so long as it passed a signal, I'd have a cable just as good as those designed specifically for audio applications. I don't know what the exact frequency range is for skin effect. However, DH Labs also mentioned non-linearity, which I don't think is the same animal. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] How to use the world clock input on the Transporter?
I'm investigating the use of an external DAC with a world clock output to use with the TP. One example of such a product is the LessLoss DAC (see http://www.lessloss.com/). The way I understand the world clock input is that it has to be configured to work with a fixed sampling rate, e.g. 44.1kHz or 96kHz. If I'm playing both 44.1kHz and 96kHz files then I'll have to change the configuration of the world clock generator to the required frequency before playing the different files. My question is whether there is a way to have this switching done automatically? Any suggestions, or is there something I'm missing? -- Jaco Jaco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10726 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36779 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Distorted playback with 48khz file
Hi, I've just noticed that I'm getting some weird sounding high pitched distortion in the background when playing back a 48khz track. Its a high pitched whine that has a kind of echo/vibrato effect with it. It is present throughout the whole track, but seems to 'play along' with the music ie. it's not there during silent gaps. The same track has always played back fine before. Two things have changed in my setup since I last listened to it - 1: a new router and 2: a new Shek D1 DAC. Firstly I thought it might be linked to the router and so I tried connecting through an ethernet cable rather than wirelessly, but that made no difference. So my attention turned to the DAC and I tried using the SB3's analog outputs.fixed...no more distortion! So what's going on?!? Doesn't the Shek D1 like 48khz sample rate? The same track at 44.1khz plays fine through it. I was using a Meridian 203 DAC for a while, which behaved fine, and I'm pretty sure I would have tried that track with it. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Balanced vs Single ended output from Transporter
I hear a lot of memebers here saying the Transporter sounds better using the balanced xlr outputs than using single ended RCA output. Is there a technical reason for that except the balance XLR cables being less sensitive for external noise? mswlogo;214036 Wrote: > Or does oxidation make electricity flow slower or differently some how? High frequency AC tends to travel near the surface of metals. A company I used to work for used to exploit this skin effect to look for cracks in welded joints and pipes, the voltage drop was higher in a cracked sample as the current travelled along the surface and up and down the sides of the crack. In an OK sample, it didn't pass through as much metal, so the potential drop was smaller. So it is entirely possible that a corroded cable can affect the higher frequencies, but how corroded it needs to be and how high the frequencies would have to be would be hard to tell. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Amiga 500 power supply for SB3 - good idea?
I just did some quick measurements on my old C64 power supply. This is marked with 5V 1.7A DC, and 9V 1A AC. It has a 7 pin DIN plug with pin 3 as + and pin 4 and the shield as -. On pin 3 I measured 5.2V DC and 10.1V AC with no load. I would be very careful using this on the squeezebox. Although the DC voltage is OK, the AC voltage most probably is not. Now I don't know if the Amiga power supply is the same as the C64 one, but I would check carefully before connecting it to the SB3. -- Veggen Veggen's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7035 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36631 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Interesting observation, epsecially as I tend toward being a bit of an oenophile (though not a true audiophile at all). When I first started wine tasting, I tried very hard to develop my ability to detect "raspberry" vs. "blackberry" in the wine and other subtleties that are perceptual. I also liked to use a lot of the rather pompous vocabulary you find aroudn wine snobs. Then, when I actually *learned* about wine from a really talented winemaker, I discovered that the perfect vocabulary for wine tasting is this: "I like this wine" or "I don't like this wine". Because, in the end, my tastes are NOT the same as anyone else's so trying to convince them my taste/smell/brain combination is more correct than theirs is equivalent to trying to teach pigs to sing. -=> Jim -- JimC JimC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9428 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36503 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

It could be that a bug has been introduced in the decoder you're using, but that would have been unlikely to slip through. Another possibility is that it's a hardware problem that surfaced at about the same time, but is completely unrelated to the update. What file format are you playing? Do you get the same behavior with MP3 as with FLAC/WAV? What happens with Squeezenetwork / internet radio? If you get the same behavior regardless of the format or the source, then the issue is definitely in the Squeezebox itself. I think you may be mixing a few posts together. I think the original post in the thread related to if cables have a burn-in period, then do they have a life span? (1,000 hours was probably chosen randomly to illustrate the point). At no point did any person or company -- including DH Labs -- say you should replace cables every 1,000 hours. So in answer to your question, DH labs' input is totally valid for this discussion. What's wrong with asking the experts? I did not ask them about THEIR cables nor did I ask if their cables need to be replaced after x hours of use. It was just a general question about the effects of copper oxidation in audio cable. I could have asked the same question to any audio cable manufacturer. So using the car analogy, it was more like calling and asking about catalytic converters not the strengths and weaknesses of specific make/models. And FWIW, DH Labs is one of the few manufacturers out there that don't try to rip people off with insanely priced cable (some of their cables retail for as low as $1.00 per ft.). They have a pretty big following in the DIYer community for this reason and you can order most of their products in bulk and terminate them yourself. -- Videodrome Two-channel System: SB3, into Musiland MD-10 DAC; Outlaw 970 Pre/Pro; McCormack DNA-125 amplifier; Quad 11L speakers; Sota Sapphire ttbl. w/ Grado Ref.
