I just find this very interesting! I personally don't think it is the ADC / DAC either - not that I've made any comparisons, but I can only assume because analogue recordings (that have had no ADC / DAC) also sound completely different to the real thing. My bet (guess) would be that if you played a "live" band through an ADC then DAC and piped them directly into the speakers it would still sound "live". Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] s/pdf SB better than s/pdf soundcard pc?
I presume that your mainboard and the SB alike have optical digital outputs. So there should not be any electrical influence ones the signal has passed the optoelectrical converter... Anyway, I THINK it is all voodoo. A word which I come to like since I got myself into the very expensive hobby of being a so called audiophile. ;) Don't worry about digital signal quality worry about the noise (audible) hard disks and coolers in a PC produce! Well, and jitter? Just try the search button and after a long very long time make your mind up about it. It really depends on the receiver. But I can't see why the squeezebox (a very tightly packed package) should induce less electrical noise than a fully grown pc. -- jaysung jaysung's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12375 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36784 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] s/pdf SB better than s/pdf soundcard pc?
No, its not always the same. Although the sequence of 1s and 0s ought to be the same, this has to be represented by an analog electrical or optical signal which can have timing or other imperfections. These imperfections may or may not trouble the device that is receiving the signal: a signal with a lot of noise in it will obviously present more of a challenge to the receiver. Typically this shows up as "jitter" (search the forums for many, many threads on this topic) which can have some subtle distorting effect on the receiver. But a really top class receiving device (presumeably a DAC in this case) might be able to overcome any noise and make all sources sound alike. The first thing to do is to move the speakers away from the walls, get them off the floor, etc. (unless you have Quads or Maggies). Carpet, sofas, and other stuff that the wife wants anyway help a lot with the first reflections. And while skyscape diffusers work great, they have lousey WAF for most. An alternative that works well and has a better WAF is a bookcase/bookshelf with books of varying sizes, not lined up. It can act as a decent approximation of a QRD with much better WAF. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] DRC/Inguz and Microphone Calibration
Muski, "what I would expect" means that I am comparing (by ear) the original uncorrected sound of my system (flac files), that I know by experience to have a lumpy bass due to my particular room, but that is also pretty flat on midrange and highs, to the Inguz-corrected sound (flac/InguzDSP files). I use both test tones and music I know well. You have to compare: 1) the uncorrected sound (as above) to the standard ecm8000.txt-corrected sound; 2) the uncorrected sound (as above) to the calibrated sound. If sounds in 1) are similar on midrange and highs and the brightness only appears in 2), then the problem has to be the calibration, because unless your room is extremely dead or there is a problem with the tweeters, the Watts are pretty flat above the upper bass. I am using the normal.drc from the Inguz site. -- vdorta vdorta's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1446 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36716 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Sadly it's not a direct swap, it comes in a different physical package and requires a different supply voltage on the digital side. It might be possible to make it fit using a little adapter PCB of some kind, but the danger is that doing so would negate the effect of the careful layout on Transporter's main board. I know for a fact that even just a few mm of extra PCB trace in the wrong place can have a severe impact on sound quality, so I'd be surprised to see a genuinely worthwhile improvement by going down this route. The sounds is a little brighter, but that may simply be that I was so accustomed to the old ones. I should do some more side-by-side listening to the calibrated and uncalibrated filters.
