Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Idea for high-end Squeezebox/Transporter accessory
Also, given that CDs are rapidly becoming obsolete, I think it won't be long before we start seeing them as strictly collector's items, just like those classic 1950s Jazz LPs. In this case, you can recreate the whole CD (or LP) experience by simply taking the unit from the shelf and scanning it. The scanning device would, of course, be wireless. Being even more adventurous, I envisage a device that combines a LCD screen (a la Nokia Internet Tablet) with a built in scanning device. This way, the artwork stored on the server can be brought up on the screen after scanning, with other relevant information. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Idea for high-end Squeezebox/Transporter accessory
Yeah, but the accessory would complement the remote and/or laptop/tablet. I agree it can be pointless from the convenience point of view. The approach would particularly be useful for those with vast collections and that still have the CDs organized in shelves. I have actually stored away most of my CDs, but my prized LP collection is still at hand, and for those it would be just great to scan a cover and have the needledrop play instantly. One thing I have noticed with my current setup is that it takes some memorizing of my collection to decide what to play. Unless I have the laptop on to browse artwork, I no longer have a visual aid to decide what to listen. With a large collection, it starts to get a little complicated. Eventually, the folks at Logitech will come up with something much better than the remote, but less distracting than a Internet Tablet or Laptop. I think for most people, grabbing the CD packaging, or any printed material for that matter, would largely defeat the convenience of the Squeezebox. You could just as easily drop the CD into a player as scan the bar code packaging to play it. While I agree that the remote interface leaves a lot to be desired, that's not what I'd consider much of an improvement. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37079 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] how to incorporate a sub in a SB system?
For simplicity it's hard to beat a sub with speaker-level inputs. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Idea for high-end Squeezebox/Transporter accessory
Having used the listening stations in Border's and other music stores, it just occurred to me: wouldn't it be great to have bar code scanner system for instant access to your music collection? Once you have ripped your entire collection to your music server, you would assign each album or compilation a dedicated bar code. You can use the original code on the CD or print out new ones for compilations or older recordings. Instead of pressing a lot of buttons on the remote, or accessing a tiny LCD screen on a Nokia Internet Tablet, one would simply grab the CD in question and scan the barcode. This would be great for recreating the old fashioned liner notes reading when listening to music, and particularly useful when friends are over. Just imagine what it would do for needledrops (digital files of LP records). Grab the original LP cover and scan the barcode and the music would start playing! I envision this as an extension to the present Slim Server software. If Slim Devices/Logitech would come up with something like this, it would literally trounce Sonos, Olive and the rest of the competition, IMO. -- crooner Customized dual chassis "Super Squeezebox" EAD DSP-7000 Series III DAC with HDCD and mods. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] how to incorporate a sub in a SB system?
The simplest way would be to get a sub with stereo RCA pass-through. If the sub only has stereo RCAs for input, you could split the SB output with a pair of RCA Y-adaptors. If the sub has only a mono RCA input, then you probably should get a preamp to generate the proper 2.1 output. If you want to be able to crank the volume way up, you will need a preamp that can apply a high-pass crossover for your main speakers. If you're really trying to go the minimalist approach then these fixed passive filters should work well: http://www.audioc.com/accessories1/misc/hipass.htm -- seanadams seanadams's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37077 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Videodrome;216862 Wrote: > Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't part of the attraction to 96K > upsampling to reduce the brick wall effect of filtering at or near 44.1 > kHz? The attraction of 96K Sampling (not up sampling) over 44.1K sampling, is that it moves the brick wall filter from 22.05 kHz to 48 kHz. This can have audible benefits, because the 22kHz filter usually has measurable affects in the audible pass band. Move the filter to 48k and the effects are outside of the audible portion of the pass band. Oversampling on playback allows similar movement of the re-construction filter, and has been used by all playback systems for 20 years now (recall 4x or 8x oversampling, or 176K or 352K to keep the same scale). Usually, its used to allow a low order re-construction filter (ie, the reconstruction filter does NOT have to be a brick wall design, 3-4th order is usually enough). Upsampling is a term used by some to describe what they feel is a better oversampling algorithm, but the cold fact of the matter is that there's really no difference to the two. They are both changing the data rate, but neither is really capable of recreating what has been lost by the original anti-aliasing filter. Even if you knew exactly how to compensate for the audible affects of the anti-aliasing filter in one studio's A/D, it wouldn't necessarily work for another. Hope this doesn't just confuse things more! By all means fix the manual so this problem doesn't get raised by future purchasers, but that doesn't eliminate Slim Devices' need to provide me with a product whose performance matches the way it was advertised to me before my purchase! With the ubiquity of this feature, it would be ethical of the manual to explicitily state that this feature does not work. still, even no mention of FF/REW in the manual (although sneaky) would be within requirements. BUT the manual explicitly states this feature does work - and I quote from page nine: "Press and hold REW to scan backward through the current song" and "Press and hold FWD to scan forward through the current song". So I guess some form of ring buffer to decouple the input word stream from the DAC wouldn't work as even a fractional difference in mean clock frequency between transport and DAC would lead to near instant buffer over/under runs. So if a PLL is needed to lock the DAC clock to the input stream recovered clock, then that PLL circuit needs a super-stable reference clock itself and some form of damping to minimise tracking jitter. -- amcluesent amcluesent's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10286 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37044 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Personally I think the one with the most promise is the digitally controlled VCXO, its still a phase lock loop in principle but with a very low jitter VCXO. The "pull range" of these is small so you still have to get things right. IF you use very low noise DAC from the digital controller to the VCXO (low noise power supply etc) the results can be very good. The beauty of this scheme is that you can easily optimize the loop time constants on the fly. Short time constant to aquire lock then long time constant during run, with the possibility to change as conditions warrent. This has been done in purely analog domain, bit its very tricky and expensive to do. Its actually fairly easy to do this with a digital controler. I knew a couple people doing it with small processors, I'm trying it out with an FPGA. On the USB issue the adaptive mode (the common one) has NO connection from the receiver to the transmitter, its purely a one way street. The the clock in the receiver has to have some way to synchronize with the frequency of the transmitted data rate or else you will either over or under run the data. If you are clocking it out slightly faster than its coming in eventually you get to the point where there is no data. If its clocking out slower than whats coming in, eventually you overflow the internal buffer. This is what the adaptive mode does, it adjusts the local clock on the fly so it stays synced to the average data rate of the incoming data. On the original subject of this thread, I've actually done some experiments with some digital cables, from basic cheap coax to some expensive "audiophile" cables. Interestingly enough the audiophile cables were actually very lousy digital interconnects, they actually added significant amounts of jitter, which with some DACs could help mask the strong spikes from the reciver making it sound better! I'm not saying ALL audiophile digital cables work this way, just the ones I tested, and no, I'm not saying who they are. True 75 ohm BNC connectors with normal good quality communications grade coax is about as good as you are going to get. Of course that means having BNC connectors on both ends, not RCA jacks. When using BNCs it important to use real 75 ohm connectors not the more common 50 ohms ones. I see a mismatch being done all over the place, just going BNC won't help if its not 75ohm BNC. Interestingly enough the other option which works extremely well is good old type F cable TV connectors. They work extremely well, only come in one flavor so you can't mess it up and are available everywhere. The S/PDIF standard SHOULD have used these. If you are going to mod equiptment to replace n RCA, consider going with type F. You might be able to get a type F in the same hole as the RCA, and you can go to Radio shack and get the cable for $4. > > For example the Benchmark DAC1 seems to be absolutely immune to input > jitter (its output measures the same no matter how jittery the input). > This is an interesting case. They use a high frequency clock (I think its something like 110MHz) to reclock the data going to the DAC. This DOES make the system almost immune to jitter on the input, but DOES effectively create jitter on the output. The clock might be low jitter, but its reclocking the 44.1 (or whatever). What hits the DAC chip is pulled in or pushed out to the nearest clock pulse of the high frequency clock. This produces distortions in the waveform exactly the same as jitter on the 44.1 clock. This is a perfect example of being immune to jitter does not necessarily mean its LOW jitter. Also, "analytical" is a term often used in a perjorative sense with this gear. The point they seem to miss is that these things are first and foremost tools of the trade. They need to do things that domestic speakers don't (like not blow up when given a 1,000w sine wave by mistake... or play all day at full volume). They also need to be very consistent from day to day, unaffected by humidity etc. There is a school of thought that these speakers need accoustically well behaved rooms (like control rooms...) to sound at their best - but I would argue that is true of ANY speaker. I would naively > think that DAC's would do something better to be immune to bit-by-bit > jitter? Well, it's not quite as easy as that. The most obvious thing is simply to have a good local clock in the DAC, and use that to clock out the bits. The problem is that the rate at which that clock runs will be slightly different than the rate at which the bits arrive. If it's faster the DAC buffer will empty; if it's slower the buffer will fill. Either way, bad. That's why DACs reconstruct a clock from the data itself. Still, it really doesn't sound like a very hard problem - all you need is a clock with the right average rate - and in fact PLLs do a pretty good job of generating a clean clock (they essentially smooth out the jitter by averaging over many cycles). However some claim that even the small amount of jitter than remains is audible, but it's apparently possible to do even better. For example the Benchmark DAC1 seems to be absolutely immune to input jitter (its output measures the same no matter how jittery the input). -- opaqueice opaqueice's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4234 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37044 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Really controversial idea...
Thanks for all of that information, John. It's extremely useful to have everything condensed into a single post! Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB setup great but I lost my CD player MoJo.
Not many suggestions for a cheap dac to rival the shek ... So why not try the behringer src2496 approx £90 ... you will need to do a few simple mods to squeeze the best from it ...swap the rectifier diodes for schottky's and bump up the smoothing caps to 105 deg types ie the pannasonic fc's also damping the case and crystal is very effective. I'm running an sb3 into a modded src2496 which then feeds a quad99cdp [in dac mode]..for some reason this sounds much more lively than straight to the quad. I have no explanation for this. Without a good psu this set up is close to the sound of the quad playing the cd its not quite got the sparkle of the cdp but its damn close. -- zanash zanash's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12157 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37014 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
