All true but... I'm surprised that only some albums overload. Are you
comparing albums of similar dynamics? In the digital world, there's a
peak signal level that nothing can exceed. Some albums may have their
average levels turned down, to prevent peak clipping, while heavily
compressed albums can turn it up.

> Would it be best to adjust attenuation within the Transporter
instead?

I would, I'd set the Transporter's internal attenuation so that when
the TP is wide open, it does not overdrive the preamp.

Careful here, the Transporters internal attenuation does NOT affect the
balanced outputs

If your pre-amp allows gain/sensitivity control, you could then adjust
it so that turning the volume knob to the max is just a little louder
than you ever want to listen. This will keep visitors, kids, etc. from
blowing out your speakers.

Agreed!
Cheers, Dave

Why should a devices which is capable of pass-through dts and/or ac3 be
-perfect-?

Does it say something about the amount of jitter from that signal?

"Professional turntables" are designed for the needs of professional
DJs. In the olden days, they were also designed for radio stations, but
I don't think any real radio stations have used vinyl for decades.

In either use, the professional use is not about audio quality it is
about rugged use that will stand up to what DJs do. Which includes all
sorts of evil things like back cue'ing, dropping needles, etc. If you
subjected an "audiophile" moving coil cartridge to this abuse, it would
die in a minute or two.

If there is sonic quality you are trying to extract, I would strongly
suggest you get something audiophile oriented, not aimed at DJs.

There are a fair number of decent ~~$500 turntables, Project, etc.

A pro-audio shop is a good place to get phono preamps that are decent
quality and inexpensive. The audiophile shops seem to think that $3000
is a good price for a preamp that really is only good enough to feed
into your real, line-level pre-amp.

I borrowed a friends Transporter to compare.
I ran it for a couple of weeks with AudioQuest Python RCA interconnects
but today replaced these with AudioQuest King Cobra XLR connectors.

The difference using balanced connections is night and day and has
brought the Transporter to life.

This is the best I've ever heard digital sound :)

System:

InnerSound Eros MK3 active speakers
InnerSound pre-amp with balanced inputs
InnerSound ESL amplifier for panels

Transporter running over GigE wired connection using FLAC encoded
files server from a home built NAS running SlimServer.

Pro audio shops sell different RCA/XRL adapters and/or cables. At
least here in Europe www.thomann.de has all kinds of suitable stuff for

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] DAC & studio monitors: please indulge me and read this...

2007-07-28 Thread brjoon1021

Due to a pretty cool windfall, I can get a nice DAC to connect to my
SB3. The only catch is that it has to come from a "Pro Audio" store
rather than a Hi-FI store - due to insurance reasons.

So, I have enough money to get a Lavry or Benchmark or whatever.

I have read good things here and elsewhere about both of them. Have any
of you done some serious A/B on a system where the DAC was the only
variable ? Basically, I am looking for a recommendation as I have no
opportunity to try either in a meaninful way, but I do get to pick one
as if I found a magic lamp. Also, I am open to other DACs as well, just
has to be from a Music gear store, not a Hi-Fi store.

Secondly, I am considering monitors from a pro audio gear store as home
speakers. I liked a small pair of Dynaudio speakers, the BMA5's. I can
get them too. Are any of you familiar with those or other $1000 -
$1500(US) monitors that would make a nice home stereo speaker. I have
an audible illusions tube preamp to go in front of them if the speakers
are powered. I have a Counterpoint SA 100 amp if the speakers are not
active. For it to be worthwhile, the monitors/amp combo (whether
powered or not) should be a decent step up from my old Paradigm Export
Monitor 8 inch two-way speakers being driven by the Counterpoint.

Sorry for the long post. I could really use any two cents that you
would care to contribute about DAC's and active and passive monitors
for home audio. Also, these powered monitors have XLR inputs, my preamp
does not have that output. Have you seen a decent cable or adapter that
would allow me to run my pre-amp into the powered monitors ?

Thanks a lot!

B.

Simple, some albums are mastered louder than others.
Using digital volume control can have negative impact on some signals.
It reduces the signal to noise ratio, and whenever you cut bits out, you
really should re-dither.

I would, I'd set the Transporter's internal attenuation so that when the
TP is wide open, it does not overdrive the preamp.

Then I'd use the pre-amps gain control to control loudness to the speakers.

If your pre-amp allows gain/sensitivity control, you could then adjust
it so that turning the volume knob to the max is just a little louder
than you ever want to listen. This will keep visitors, kids, etc. from
blowing out your speakers.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Why am I overloading when connected XLR balanced to a pre amp?

2007-07-28 Thread yooper

I currently have my Transporter connected to my pre via XLR balanced,
and some (not all) albums (flac) overload my system. I do keep the
Transporter volume at 100%.

I do have an option within my pre to adjust analog input levels, and
need to decrease the volume for two channel to -11 db to kep some
albums from distorting.

Should this be happening? Why do only some albums overload? Is it ok
that I keep this adjustment at -11 all the time, any effect on overall
sound quality?

Would it be best to adjust attenuation within the Transporter instead?

Thanks,

Mark

>Anyone using one of these with a SB?<

Yep! :-)

Not using the Onkyo speakers though as they aren't too clever, replaced
by some Wharfedale Diamonds.

Comparing the DAC? Well, in a completely subjective test, the direct
digital in was 'heavier' on tonal balance and there was less subtlety
overall, like using a smaller palette of tonal colours. But to be
honest, at these prices, the speaker dominates the sound.
