Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] need new cd burner

If you get a DVD drive make sure you get a dual layer capable drive.
That can come in handy for "backing-up" your DVD collection.

There's plenty of free software out there that makes it easy.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Affordable Audio review of SB3

2007-09-14 Thread fred7

TiredLegs;226819 Wrote:

I just wanted to re-confirm what I had written so I ran another test
tonight.

I just did the following test using dbPowerAmp:

Ripped a track to FLAC named ORIG_FLAC.flac (Compression level 5)
Ripped the same track to WAV named ORIG_WAV.wav

Converted ORIG_FLAC.flac to ORIG_FLAC.wav

The end result is:
ORIG_FLAC.flac 23,492,868 bytes long
ORIG_FLAC.wav 44,262,464 bytes long (flac file converted to wav)
ORIG_WAV.wav 44,262,464 bytes long

When I do a FC /B on Windows the wav files are exactly the same - No
Differences Encountered.

I had done this a long time ago evaluating FLAC and comparing EAC to
dbPowerAmp. My CD's arre pretty much pristine so when I ripped a bunch
of discs and compared EAC to dbPoweramp the results were the same but I
found dbPoweramp much faster and user friendly so I went with it. Since
I had over 2,000 CD's to rip I didn't mind paying a few bucks for the
program.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] HDCD vs 20/16 bit downsampling

Suppose I have an HDCD track (20 bit encoded in 16 bit), but my current
offboard DAC is 16 bit.

In which order would you rank the potential audio quality?

  a
- Play HDCD track unchanged on offboard 16 bit DAC
- Decode and downsample track to 16 bits and play on offboard 16 bit
  DAC
- Decode to 20 bit and play using SB3 onboard 24 bit DAC
- Decode to 20 bit and play using new offboard 20/24 bit DAC

You know, I just don't know; I have always been on the other side of the
issue obtaining the patents, not enforcing them so this is a weak area
for me. I am presently looking into it and will post what I find,
though keep in mind that whatever I may come up will be my own personal
opinion and not a rendered "legal opinion". As it happens, I know the
attorneys that prosecuted the divisional applications after MS bought
Pacific Microsonics. Though truthfully, it would be a lot easier for
everyone if Slim Devices just ponied up for a license, once there is a
fully functional plug-in module ready. Whats a 10K expense in the
bigger picture for the use of the logo?

Hi Michael,
I looked at your site/products, pretty interesting. You are the only
one or few of the audiophile companies which describe the architecture
how digital/wireless players fit in the picture.
Interesting, instead of the UCD amps a pure digital amplifier would
be theoretically perfect. In fact, I am sticking with a Panny XR55 as
even in real world terms, it seems to give me a very good quality of
playback. I am planning on getting the SA-XR700 so that I have a
complete digital path even for SACD and DVD-A with my modded Oppo
players (and ofcourse the Bolder digital modded SB3).
I am hoping somebody would be willing to mod my Panny digital amplifier
receivers. I really dont know why audiophiles dont like these..

Regardless of how the system is set up, a phono preamp is of course
required. From then on, we have two choices:

1. phono preamp -> analogue preamp -> power amp
2. phono preamp -> A/D converter -> Transporter -> power amp

I think you are saying that you feel setup #1 will give superior sound
quality. Intuitively one would expect this to be the case, as it avoids
the A/D and D/A conversions. But I personally feel that setup #2 will
sound better because in my experience, at a given price point, A/D
converters are more transparent than preamps.

Actually because of the limitations of the processor and firmware - the

Huh? I'm not sure what your sources are, but the quality of *any* PC
streaming depends on the audio device used. And that goes for Vista, or

What standards do you want to use? Remember, both the SB and the
Transporter are firmware-upgradeable and may be enhanced in the future
to support new standards (subject to CPU limitations of the hardware).

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] itunes v SB3

2007-09-14 Thread Eric 2

Thanks for everyone's help. To answer a few of your questions:

As yet I don’t own a Squeezebox.

The Stello doesn’t have a volume control so this would be handled by
the amp.
Not that I’m quite understanding the disadvantage of this!

Muski - I do already own an Airport Express which is used for a laptop
but as the G5 computer would be sitting very close to the DAC/Amp.
Wouldn’t a USB cable or Optical cable from the computer be the best
option? The fewer paths the better? The G5 has a full sized optical
out, whereas the Airport Express uses the mini version.

The Transporter is something I have considered. I wish I could hear the
difference between this and the Stello but I think this is going to be
very difficult here in the UK. I’ve also searched the web to see if
anyone else has compared the 2 but without any luck. I figured the
Stello would be more flexible without compromising the sound. I’ve not
heard the Stello either but reports are very good.
