Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Advice please hi-fi geeks

2007-10-06 Thread tomjtx

You will find a lot of info at head-fi.

One thing you should look into is a headphone amp. The headphone outs
in most amp/ preamps and the SB3 are not going to compare well with a
dedicated headphone amp.
The good news is that there are some great amps that won't break the
bank.

I got a portable Corda Move from Jan Meier in Germany. I use it in the
bedroom setup with the SB3 and my Ipod 160gig Classic when I travel. It
is small and has a usb DAC included.
It is a killer amp at 240.00 delivered from Germany.

I also bought a Meier Corda Cantate, 540.00,
for the Transporter rig.

I have listened to both amps with my AKG701's and they are a great
match for this phone.
People at head fi say the Mier amps do well with Grados as well.

The SB3> Corda Move>AKG701 in my bedroom is keping me up
nights...that is my only compaint :-)

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Advice please hi-fi geeks

2007-10-06 Thread mikeruss

Hi all

I would love a pair of headphones - probably Grado - but my stereo
probably like most of you is in front of the sofa.

The issue is getting the headphones to the amp/source. I have looked at
wireless but I'm not keen, mixed reports etc. So... any ideas how I can
get a feed close to my sofa? Do I need to look at extension cables for
the headphones? If so I've not seen any decent extension cables.

Yes it is a switching PS but you can change the input voltage with a
jumper. It is not automatic. Is this important or is the same that be
an automatic one?

Yep. If they can find buyers for the Keel alloy plate for the LP12 at
£1500 then £10K for an actual functioning unit seems a bargain! ;-)

IMHO, the least Linn should do is provide a 320Gb USB disk will all
Linn Records music already ripped to lossless.

Surprisingly, the Linn rep talked about EAC for a ripping approach.
Somehow I don't picture the typical Linn customer as someone with the
knowledge and patience to use EAC...let alone the Twonky software.
While I agree that it probably doesn't make sense for Linn to build a
completely proprietary server approach, I do think they need to offer
more value on top of these open approaches they are suggesting. The
Linn GUI was very basic and seemed like a very limited effort given the
cost of the unit. Also, they should build a network of acceptable
ripping houses for their customers who might not want to do it
themselves. My overall take was that the launch will ill-conceived and
they are assuming the name will sell the device.

Don't get me wrong, I own some Artikulats, so I'm aware of the sticker
shock that comes with Linn products, but I can't justify the leap to
the Klimax from the Transporter given the lack of usability and the
fact that the pricing seems much more what their market will bear than
COGS oriented.

Interestingly, I decided to buy a high-end system because of the
Transporter. I knew I could have my whole collection available
through one device. This justified the cost for me. I actually chose
the Aritkulats because they were fully activ and kept that minimalist
feel.

If you mean normalization to be just a transient volume control, its no
different.

Most uses of 'normalization' mean adjust the values in the PCM to make
the loudest signal be full range, 0x8fff, and then save the result.
This crude arithmetic function makes all of the signal louder, including
the noise, and doesn't redither the values. Dithering is very important,
it makes easily audible differences.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Million dollars to prove cables areworth money

2007-10-06 Thread arge

The fact is the Audiophiles gain as much enjoyment from tinkering with
the gear, compare it, thinking about it, touch it and re-arrange it as
a listening to room optimized sound. There is nothing wrong with that!
What has happened in the last few years is that “good enough” audio
gear is available at reasonable prices; you just have to mine it out
from the ton of garbage mixed with it. The “mining process” is actually
one of the main Audiophiles sources of delight: the result of that
romantic tension towards the unrealized Audio Nirvana dream. Once you
buy “it” the post-purchase guilt is likely to sneak in and spoil the
fun (definitely true for expensive audio cables).
Same is happening with most mainstream cars (finally!). The
value-segment is now comfortable enough, powerful enough and with
enough quality. BMW has to put a V10 -500hp in their M5 to rise above a
Saturn V6 Aura. BTW modern 4 cylinders are arguably an even better
value.
Most cars/hifi gear selection choices can be directly linked to those
compulsions that we acquire as child and never leave us: peer
pressure, seeking the alpha male status or compensating for some
perceived deficiencies… Which is why my 5w stereo… Just kidding.
We (first world – employed guys and girls), for the first time in
history, live in the world of plenty. Spend your $ responsibly. On the
other hand buy the $7000 cable and put your wealth back in the economy
life cycle. But when you click the “check-out” button keep you hart
rate low, you know, to reduce CO2 emissions.

I notice it's a switching power supply.

I think the most obvious reason for changing the stock PS is that it's
a switching supply. Leaving aside the question of whether that is
really a valid reason (!) if you ARE of a mind to bother changing
supplies then you may as well avoid angst by going for a linear
regulated supply...IMHO.

The RA one appears to be a switching PS.

I use a linear regulated supply from CPC:
http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/Batteries+&+Power+Supplies/AC+to+DC/UNBRANDED/AD-05150R/displayProduct.jsp?sku=PW00187

As discussed many times, the benefits of a new supply are unproved. For
me, it makes sense as a comfort factor as long as the cost is very low
(as it is for the CPC supply).

YMMV :-)

For me it's working better especially in the bass.
