Packet loss in data transmission is common, and is merely an issue when the application is not loss tolerant. In a business network, you'll probably want to prioritize critical business flows over streaming audio and youtube :-) TCP/IP typically corrects packet loss, or you'll know. UDP doesn't, it leaves that to protocols above. All in all, packet retransmisson and error recovery are a matter of the right design in the protocol stack. It surprises most people to hear that data networks regard voice connections as quite loss tolerant. You hear some clipping, big deal, the other person will repeat the sentence if the listener thinks it's worth it. :-) Luckily audio doesn't use that path in our SB setups. But would I say the connection between the SS and the SB never loses packets? I think some reports herte attest it's not qwuite the case and that it naturally depends on the quality of the connection. However, I think data corruption is extremely rare - very improbable, but possible, and not critical for the aplication all in all. -- pablolie pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39113 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What to upgrade next to improve sound quality ?
You will get a lot more from upgrading your source. If you invest in wonderful speakers they will reveal in fine detail the limitations of your source. Try the Lavry Black DA-10 DAC, which is magnificent. I demoed the Benchmark DAC-1 - it is very nice, smooth, detailed, quiet, but a bit too "polite" for my taste. I then tried and bought the Lavry and found it more involving and dynamic. Also very worthwhile is a linear power supply for the SB3. I am using the Bolder unit, and found it to be a significant upgrade. Just my $.02 Charlie Bolder modded SB3 + power supply, Naim NAC282+Hicap, Naim NAP200, CP-Audio speakers, Naim cables. -- crp crp's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10063 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39226 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Linn Klimax DS - Network Music Player
I've got a transporter connected to a bunch of Linn gear (Exotik, 320A) but before I purchased it I wrote to Linn to see if they had anything in the pipeline. I also suggested that they just write some drivers to allow their products to talk directly to a slimserver. A few of their preamps now have both ethernet ports and a DAC so I can't see it being that difficult. Heck, I'd have a go at it myself if I could get the internal Linn development guides (fat chance). Unless I win the lottery I'll be sticking with my transporter (sound is excellent). I suppose if I was really into it I could write a remote control program for a PDA that will display all the relevant details like the Linn does but that sounds like a lot of work for little gain. -- wdaher wdaher's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13681 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=38815 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3 digital output quality
Hi Pat, I'm about to remove the output inductors L8/L9 on the SB3 board and install a 75R BNC digital output. Please forgive me the stupid question but where do I wire BNC+...would it have to be soldered to the resistor divider upstream? I'm a little bit confused now where BNC- goes? To one of the resistors? Thanks for clarifying this. By the way, is it a good idea to remove the 12,28MHz clock while I'm doing the mod? I heard this powers internet radio and could add some jitter. Thanks for your help. That is, there is no theoretical limit to how small of a time can be expressed in the waveform. I think a quantization limit is centainly a major critereon I use to ditiguish digital from analog. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] My experience implementing John Swenson's Synchronous Reclocking Circuit
Sean: Yes, most of the jitter problem comes in the RX end. There are 2 places in the TX that can mess things up. The first is having to deal with the fact that the SPDIF signal is generated in a chip that has too much stuff going on inside. Even in the case of a typical CD player, which usually uses one chip for the clock, SPDIF generation, and worst of all - the upsampling, there is almost no way to lower the jitter floor unless you break things up. In this specific case, using separate chips for the clock(s) and the SPDIF out would help some. Especially if driven from a supply other than the one that feeds the big Xilinx chip. If you feed both of them together, that may not help much. Of course, the Xilinx may have such a high level of internally generated jitter that those measures may not make an appreciable difference. That is a definite possibility. (I get a good laugh out of the guys who buy fancy clocks, and then shove them directly into the filter chip on their CD players. Yes, it helps a bit, but not all that much. All of those functions need to be separate. Expecting low jitter when one chip does all the work) The other problem is the output return loss. We did a lot of research around 10-15 years ago, trying to find out why something so insignificant as a cable can sound different. We came to the conclusion that when the return loss for each of the 3 components (RX, TX, cable) was around 30 dB, then the differences between them tended to vanish. What happens when you have too many reflections - and reflections arriving at the wrong time - is when things sounded worse. The increase in reflections messes with the decision point of the RX circuit, and allows for more of that nasty correlated crud to creep in. As for the ferrite bead doo-hickey: I was going to characterise it, but, alas..I misplaced it. Since the BW of my TDR is rather high (1 GHz or so), the contribution of the resistive portion of the bead has most likely fallen off, and all that shows on the TDR is the inductive kick. Having said that...I would imagine that it has several ohms of resistance, probably in the 20-100 MHz range, for it to be of any help in EM compliance. While that would only show up on a frequency domain measurement, I can assure you that while energy in that range is harmful in the world of EMI, a "high-performance" TX/RX circuit would have substantial amounts of energy in that range. So, the return loss measured in the frequency domain is probably worse! And very frequency dependent. Not at all practical for you guys. Unless you are only selling a handful of units a month. The guys who are modding these things need to understand that. And cut you some slack. So...for those who weren't paying attention over at AC: The only change I would advise is taking out the ferrite doo-hickey. Adding a transformer output is not the same as changing out op-amps or caps. While it is possible to make one work really well, that is something the average DIYer is not going to come up with on their own. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What to upgrade next to improve sound quality ?
Hello Auronthas, Room size does play a part in the type and size of speaker. One would not put Watt Puppy 7s, Thiel 7.2s, or Vandersteen Model 5As in your room. But 10 X 14 does not rule out Thiel .5 or any 1 series maybe 2 series. The Vandersteen Model 1C would work well with that size room. After a friend of mine got divorced and had to sell his $50,000 audio system, he moved into a motel that had been turned into long stay efficiency rooms then bought a Conrad Johnson PV5, Amber 70 amp, Meridian CD player, and a pair of Vandersteen Model 1Bs. Imagine a small motel room only big enough to hold a double bed, dresser, floor lamp, and corner chair, then make room to shove a kitchenette in there also. In his small room the system sounded great. All I am suggesting is to give some other types of speakers a listen to see if they will work for you. I could be wrong, especially since this is e-mail, but I get the sense that you have narrowed it down to Monitors possibly thinking that is all that will work. If you can use a Monitor Speaker on stands, the Vandersteen Model 1C will work beautifully. Where my thoughts are going with all this is if you are considering an $1100 Monitor Speaker plus $300 stands, why not at least listen to a pair of Thiels or Vandersteens that would have about the same over all footprint (equal to Monitors with stands), probably sound better overall, give better bass response, and cost $400 to $600 less! You would be saving enough to be closer to buying that DAC you are looking at and then have speakers to take advantage of that DAC. But again, my opinion is upgrade the speakers first to get more bang out of your system for the setup you already have, then if you think you can get more performance with a DAC, go for it, because you have the equipment in place to take advantage of that improvement. The DAC in the squeezebox is a very good DAC (not the best, but very good for a $300 price point unit). It is better then the DAC in all but the expense Surround Processor and CD Players (granted the SB could use some better parts between the DAC and the RCAs but that does not mean the DAC itself is not one of the better ones available). -- iPhone iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39226 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New Transporter vs Old Transporter
I bought my first TP in Feb 2007. I was very impressed. It was good enough for me to retire my Modified Pioneer PD-91 to the bottom shelf and let the kids play Barney music on it. The background was deathly quiet and the player dynamic and engaging...it had some life to it. Unfortunately the TP went blank after a few months and would not power up. I sent it back to Slimdevices and they quickly sent me a new TP with a new power supply that they said was more reliable. This new TP worked very nicely but it lacked dynamics and was not engaging. The music was just dead. It had clarity but no life no punch. I was disappointed. Even my wife commented that the PD-91 sounded better then the new TP. The fact that my wife could tell any difference was astonishing. This TP also died a few months later but for other unrelated reasons. In fact it turned out to be the fault of my ISP, the TP was unable to establish its web address and would shut down. I interpreted the TP shut down as another failure and sent it back to Slimdevices. They were kind enough to send me another TP, though this one was a factory refurb, on account of the fact that there was nothing wrong with the one I just sent back. This refurbed TP has the newer powersupply and I was told that that is the only change from the early TP that I had back in Feb. Unfortunately this TP sounds dead also. I feel like I am playing elevator music in my house all the time. While it sounds decent there is nothing dynamic going on and it is not engaging. I still love the concept of networked music and I got extra points from my wife for getting 600 cd's out of our living room, I just want it to sound engaging enough to keep me listening. Also I noticed that some of the early TP reviews were better then the newer reviews. I would like to see Stereophile revisit the TP that they are selling now to see if they can hear it too. Has anyone else experienced the difference between the old TP and the new TP? -- sjparsons sjparsons's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13663 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39577 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
