You want to "brighten" your sound and move the soundstage "in front" of your speakersthis goes against every "audiophile" stands for IMO. If you want to simply brighen your sound try a set of Nordost Blue Heaven interconnects...right around $120 a pair...these will brighten your sound. If you want bright sound in general, change to a pair of b&w speakers...these are bright...as for DAC's, I have never found one that was "Bright" but I have owned nearly a dozen at this point, and none of them was less than $600, so maybe there are some but I have never owned one. Depends on the specifics of the sub. On my REL stadium, the speaker level inputs are actually high impedance, so while the operate in parallel, they really don't load down the amp. Other subs take the speaker level input and filter it, and send a high pass signal to the speakers. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] How about digital active then?
So do we really want the ultimate quality? I reckon (shoot me down!) that Slim Devices would not find it impossible to develop a 'paired Squeezebox' solution that had more than one (different) digital output for each channel - a high frequency and a low frequency one. You then feed each side through a stereo amp, and then to a two-way speaker. True digital active, a la Meridian. With an Inguz-like system of EQ, it should not be beyond the realms of possibility to match the levels and have a good digital crossover, designed specifically for your own room. The only difficulty at the moment is the simple issue of syncing two SBs - it would have to be perfect. However, if it's a one-box solution, it must be pretty easy. Only one display and wifi card, so surely it can all be done for under $500 - I'd buy one for twice that! What's not to love? Thoughts and comments? Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Adding some bass?
If one were looking for extended low accurate bass that seamlessly mates to main speakers for music listening (not Home Theater), a possible suggestion would be any active sub that operates by becoming active before the output to the mains. These subs have a huge advantage over LFE, passive, or add-on subs. The first and main advantage is they completely remove the low base load from your main amplifier letting it concentrate on the highs, midrange, and upper base. They blend seamlessly into the system and sound like they are part of the mains. Volume is no longer an issue because they behave as the mains do because they are receiving the same signal sample as the mains just only the low end. It is basically like somebody added a lower base driver inside your main speakers. Thiel and Vandersteen 2Wq (the V2W is for HT LFE) active Sub-woofers are both good examples. The ability to change the Q should be a function of the subwoofer itself, not an item that affects the whole system. Why mess with the source signal when the device that needs to be adjusted can be tailored to the room? Now for the downside, although these active subs work wonderfully with full range speakers, they were not designed to add base to satellites and most monitors. The reason is because satellites and most monitors do not have enough bass extension to reach the area most subs operate in. This issue causes a hole or at a minimum a deep valley in the bass performance between where the monitors run out of gas and the sub takes over. Which is why a sub will not fix the lack of bass authority in satellites or most monitors. Speakers used with active subs need to have reasonable response an octave below the crossover point to have realistic blending (filter theory 101). Having a sub with a high upper bass reach adds to the problem because the sub is now not operating in its bandpass and will be to weak (probably 6dB) and muddy. The primary problem being that the more bass extension the mains lack the wider (hence higher up in bass frequency) the required octave overlap becomes (one octave at 50Hz {25Hz down and 100Hz up} is a much smaller range then one octave at 200Hz {100Hz dn and 400Hz up}). As an example if one targets the crossover frequency at 50Hz, ones mains need to realistically go below 25Hz. 80Hz is my preferred cross-over point with active subwoofers. I have a choice of many full range speakers that start running out of bass gas below 40Hz and the sub never has any work load above 150Hz staying well away from the 200Hz mud zone and yields actual bass response down below 20Hz. -- iPhone iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40177 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

In my experience, that relationship can buy you far more than you will ever save buying from the cheapest source. My last purchase was just over a year ago and it wasn't a big spend in audio terms - £1000 for an integrated amp and speakers. My dealer let me take three amps and (eventually) four pairs of speakers to audition at home over several weekends. When I decided on what I wanted, he threw in decent (not cheap) speaker cables and interconnects and when the amp failed (twice), on both occasions he lent me a replacement whilst mine was returned to the manufacturer. Both times, the dealer successfully pressed for the amp being replaced with a brand new model (even managing to get me a change of colour as my black Transporter had arrived in the interim). You should be able to connect any sub with a high level (speaker level) input to your amp. Effectively the output of your main amp is the input to the amp in the sub. Ive been using a http://www.bkelec.com/HiFi/Sub_Woofers/XLS200.htm in a similar set up for 9 months now and am very pleased. On slimserver we are lucky to be able to use the Inguz EQ plugin to correct for room effects. Will you be able to run this? Being able to use some form of EQ to correct for room effects is essential to get the best out of any sub. ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: speaker recomendations for approx 400
I must second what everyone else is saying here. Every speaker has a distinct personality, and people react differently to the various strengths and weaknesses of design. There is no way I can tell you which speaker you will like or dislike, based on my personal preferences. Take, for example, the Audionotes mentioned earlier in the thread. This is a design that could in no way be described as 'sorted' in a hifi sense, yet when I have listened to them, I have always found myself forgiving their shortcomings, as they are fairly musical at the price. Many other people would not give them house room, however. On the other side of the coin Redheko make speakers whose strengths I can admire and are well regarded by many, but I couldn't personally live with at all. And that's without taking the rest of your system into account! Another point I would like to add to is the one about using a hifi dealer for auditions with no intention to buy. This is something that happens to every hifi dealer, especially for items that can be bought over the net, or from some "pile 'em high, sell 'em cheap" merchant. Most of these guys are struggling to make a decent living, as people spend their cash on a wider and wider range of entertainment products, and less on music systems. Anyway if you feel you might get into hifi for the long term, then forging a relationship with a decent dealer can be very beneficial. A final point, but one well made by dealers everywhere. Very often people listen in a shop, and clearly like one or two of the products, but will not buy them because they didn't come out number one in the latest What HiFi comparitive review (for What HiFi, you can substitute almost any other magazine title). Frequently the number one is less preferred, yet will be bought by said customer because the reviewer knows best. Well, you don't have the reviewers' ears or preferences, so go with what you like! Even though you're not looking to spend huge amounts now, I would make my usual recommendation to people setting out on the path, as it were: get yourself to the next Heathrow hifi show (February or March maybe?) and have a listen. There is a surprising range of 'character' to different hifi systems, and dealers usually only stock their own favourite type. It's not really fair to go to each London dealer and spend four hours at each when you're only going to buy something that gives them £100 profit, so use the show to give yourself some guidance. You should be able to decide whether you like something that is edgy and exciting, spacious and atmospheric, detailed and precise or whatever adjectives you fancy. Even though you'll be listening to systems costing many times what yours will, this will help to guide you on the path. The worst case scenario you see is where people have spent loads on a sound that they don't really like, but keep improving their system marginally, rather than rethinking the system from the ground up (literally?). It's easy to make this an expensive hobby rather than a satisfying one.
