Right now, I'm waiting for my Harbeth Super HL5 to be shipped to me, so
I'm pretty much sated. (Still, I want to audition the 40.1 monitors.)
But I've begun dreaming about that one day when I can bring in KEF
207/2s.

I never got to audition the Martin Logan speakers, but the Summit looks
beautiful!

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Speaker Trouble--Spica TC-50s

2008-01-21 Thread gordon

I also have a pair of TC50s, and I had to replace a tweeter about 1 year
ago. I ordered my replacement from madisound (just use their search
feature to search for TC50). The tweeter and their service were both
great.

A few things to keep in mind:

1. The original tweeter will be glued or caulked in place, so once you
remove the screws, you'll have to pry it out.

2. As stated on the above-mentioned web site, the terminals are
positioned differently on the replacement tweater, so I had to open up
a gap in the cabinet using a rasp so that the tweeter would slide in.
Don't make the gap any bigger than necessary as the box will need to be
air-tight when you are done.

3. Make sure you observe the polarity when you solder in the new
tweeter- the terminals should be color coded, although you'll have to
look closely.

4. You should caulk the tweeter in addition to screwing it in place. I
used 100% silicone sealant (the permanently flexible type in case I
ever need to replace it again - available at home depot).

My speakers now sound as good as new!

(BTW, I also am using an NAD amp and an SB3.)

Hey, I think the Spendor 3/5 se's might do it for your room, especially
if you're in for very musical & accurate speakers for your money.
There's one on Audiogon for sale right on yr budget:

http://buy.audiogon.com/cgia/cls.pl?spkrmoni&1206129421

I second other people's nominations of used Vandersteens. To me,
they're one of the best big-sounding speakers which also sound great
played in lower volumes. You can also find used Quad 22L2s on Audiogon
for a bit more than $1k.

There are MANY options for you.

The drivers turn up occationally, you just missed a set of early
tweeters on ebay. Madisound does sell a 4 ohm Polydor/Audax replacement
tweeter but it is unlcear if it a betrer match for early TC-50 or late

Another good resource, other than the kind link to my site above :-) is

I always try and post to the SLUG forum when I find drivers on ebay.

what kind of music and what attributes are you drawn to in systems
you've heard? - imaging, midrange, rhythm, etc? I've had my 2 channel
stuff in a smaller room (about the dimensions you stated) on various
occasions. Unless you're willing to do some serious room treatment,
anything that realistically plays below 35-40 Hz may overpower your
room and be very fussy, placement-wise, to avoid boominess. I'd look
for some small footprint floorstanders or small monitors (although the
cost of stands as mentioned may be 1/4+ of your budget).

2008-01-21 Thread alekz

The good thing about Thiel CS 3.6 (apart from their sound, of course) is
that they can be placed at 1 foot from the real wall.

The bad thing is their low sensitivity (86 db/m) and low impedance 2-4
Ohm.

OTOH, your room is quite small (that can help your amplifier), your NAD
can withstand 2 Ohm load and can provide the recommended 100W. Also see:
http://www.thielaudio.com/THIEL_Site05/Pages/FAQs/faqpower.html.

The recommendations are good to create a "top5-10" list. Then it's upto
your music, system, personal preferences, etc. If you could borrow
speakers before buying them, that would be the ideal situation.

That's a relatively small room - you might consider smaller speakers
over full range floorstanders.

ATC SCM-7's are an option (might be slightly over $1000 new). I
haven't heard that specific model, but I've heard several others, and
they're probably the premier studio monitor manufacturer in the world,
so I don't think you could go wrong. There are lots of other good
choices in the small monitor category as well - Genelec and B&W to name
two.

In a totally different category, a lot of people swear by Gallo
Reference 3.1. I don't care for them personally, but I've seen used
pairs recently on agon for only slightly over $1,000. Here's a pair
that just sold:

You don't really need to compromise unless you want a bookshelf speaker
that is trying to make bass it physically can't. Go listen to a pair of
Thiels or Vandersteens and see what a budget full range speaker can do
and sounds like. A pair of used Vandersteen Model 2CE (or newer
Signature Is) with true biwiring would sound great for $1000. Check
Audiogon or Ebay or your nearest Vandersteen dealer for used Model 2s.
Do not worry about the number of them that you find, Vandersteen Model
2 is the best selling American made speaker ever, period. It has been
in production for 30 years and constantly improved. Lastest is the
Model 2Ce Signature II.

When flac test shows an error on a file, you should manually replace
that file with an error-free file from another backup. The theory is
that separate backup copies will not develop "bit rot" on same files.
If, for some reason, the error has propagated to all copies, then that
file must be re-ripped from the source.

Yes, the RedBook has several clever error detection and correction schemes.

But the spec defaults to a "fake it" mode when errors exceed what it can
handle. The player is required to continue making music with the most
recent frequency spectrum -- sort of the equivalent to a piano player
saying "I don't know that tune, but if you hum a few bars, I'll fake it"

> My understanding is that the the Red book standard allows an
> error rate of about one error bit per second.

The other big problem is that data file extraction (used in ripping)
uses different read technologies than music playing. It took several
years from the release of the CD spec to when computers had CD readers
(I got my first CD player ~86 and my first computer CD (1X) in ~91.)

A computer does not read the disk the same way a vintage 85 CD player
would play it.

Back when I was really into this, I even knew the differences. There
were a few small changes to the CD spec that if Sony/Philips had
included, would have made computer extracting much easier, faster, and
more reliable.

Of course, the CD was designed to be (1) a replacement for cassettes
that lead to rampant bootlegging and (2) read only.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What is the best method & codec to get the 1's and 0's off the CD to the hard drive?

2008-01-21 Thread Phil Leigh

DennyL - there are several threads on this kicking around.
However, one of the things to bear in mind is that you can assume your
CD (or DVD) Rom drive is doing a good job on Red Book but really you
need to KNOW if it is or not. Red Book read errors requiring correction
or interpolation may be non-existant on some discs and widespread on
others. Some errors give rise to audible problems (usually some type of
repetitive "clicking" or "ticking" noise). Yellow Book is intolerant of
non-recoverable errors because in computing "every Bit counts" whereas
in music you could make a case that this is not so important. I agree
that nobody is going to notice the odd bit in a million...

Using EAC or whatever you get some reassurance that Data Access is OK
or not - it's not subjective.

I would argue that using EAC to rip a CD is not following strict Red
Book protocol. AFAIK only proper CD Players do that.

Red Book error correction is more problematic for normal CD players
because (usually) they only get one bite of each cherry (sector) and
therefore on average they have to make more use of their correction
mechanisms in order to keep the music coming.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] More specifications and photos of your audiofool setup please!

2008-01-21 Thread Patrick Dixon

Here's my version which we showed at the Heathrow Hi-Fi show in 2006 -
total cost less than £3K excluding the rack (Isoblue) and the Power
Conditioner (James).

It's our SB+ and SB Amp with Neat Motive 1s. Cables are Mogami 2972
for speakers, and Mogami 2549/Eichmann bullet plugs for the I/C.

I also have a pair of Oak Motive 1s and a Silver Transporter for sale
should you be interested ...

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] More specifications and photos of your audiofool setup please!

2008-01-21 Thread markwoodroof

I am about to upgrade my 2-channel setup (just finished upgrading my AV
systems)

I have looked around the threads in the audiophile forum and there are
not enough postings showing specifications and photos of what people
are running...

It would be great to have full specs and photos from a 'starter
audiophile setup' (which I am aiming for / can afford) through to the
full monty / madness that we can we can but just drool over (but never
afford)!

I currently have the SB3 and am about to upgrade my stereo with a
Transporter, new amplifier and new speakers.

I have about £3000 for 'Phase I' and I am thinking of buying:

- Transporter
- Cyrus 8vs2 Amp
- Neat Motive 2 Speakers
- Speaker cables (QED/Chord?)

Does this sound like a sensible 'audiophile starter system' that can be
upgraded (eg add extra Cyrus power supply etc later)?

Your specs and photos much appreciated with your thoughts on how
audiofool / how happy with the results of your setup you think you
are!

Cheers

Mark

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What is the best method & codec to get the 1's and 0's off the CD to the hard drive?

2008-01-21 Thread DennyL

I don't understand how this dicussion can continue without reference to
error correction. My understanding is that the clever people at Sony
and Philips who developed the Red Book CD standard anticipated that
there would be problems getting the data off the CD, and incorporated
error correction, meaning that there is a lot more data on the CD than
we actually want to end up with, because there is redundancy required
by the error correction. The allowed error rate is very low for Red
book and even lower for Yellow Book (computer CD ROMs) because software
can't stand any errors whereas music can stand a few. I assume that if
my CD player is working properly then the error correction is working
properly. My understanding is that the the Red book standard allows an
error rate of about one error bit per second. I don't know, but I can
only imagine that this would not have an audible impact on sound
quality. When one puts a music CD into a computer CD ROM drive I guess
that one ends up with Red Book error correction, although I don't know.
Is trying to recover a whole CD, or even a track, with zero errors a
reasonable goal?

Once the music exists as a computer file I assume there is no further
problem because it will be manipulated using the same mature computer
technology that banks and insurance companies seem pretty relaxed
about.
