Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Mechanical rattle from SB3
Sean, so you were half right, the internal torx are t10, but, at least on my unit, the outer screws are t8. But that doesn't really matter (so why do I point it out you ask!!) Anyway, I took the screen off played a particularly bad song and most of the buzz went away. So I took the SB3 completely apart and saw there were two leaded electrolytic capacitors in the back. One of them was the 3000uF you mentioned and another was a smaller near the daughter board which routes power/spdif/audio/etc. That one was touching the daughter card. So I moved it away and sorta mucked with the wifi cables. Anyway, something made a difference internally cause without the faceplate, the unit is dead quite. I put the faceplate back on and it buzzed again. So I took it off and looked widthwise across the top and there's a slight co-planarity issue. So I stacked up some thick tape around the top left corner of the screen where it fits inside the plastic housing. Now it's quiet and the tape can't be seen! Thanks again for the help! In between my ex rega saturn and the transporter, I had in demo a Stello DA220 Mk II connected to my mac mini via USB. The transporter was simply superior than the Stello and the saturn. Compared to the coaxial input in the Stello, the USB sound had noticeably less resolution and an annoying "digital" rendering. Thats why im with the Transporter. The argument that Sean gives is why I think there are very few or none devices that generate and clock the signal locally, and this means almost no jitter but most importantly superior sound. -- GuyDebord Reference3A RoyalMaster monitors biwired with van den Hul Inspiration, REL Strata5. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Help with choosing Transporter v/s USB DAC
Transporter is very convenient and that is its biggest attribute. No need for computer interface in your listening room which means no need to deal with typical PC problems such as fan or hard drive noise. I've discovered however that the ethernet sourced data may not necessarily sound the best on this device. I have several spdif sources including a pc and some of them sound better TO ME with the Transporter used a dac only. There is more life and immediacy to the sound, more palpable presentation. Call it a "good jitter", I don't know, it just seems more musical to me than data from Slimserver which makes me hit the "Next" button quite often. I know that in theory that should not be the case but it is in my experience. I get similar results when I feed the Transporter and all the other sources to my Benchmark DAC1usb (through glass toslink). If you don't mind having computer around the anync USB dacs from Wavelenght are the "latest greatest" as a far as usb interface goes and from what I hear they have licensesd their technology to Ayre. -- Kiep Kiep's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8844 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43129 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

The purpose of this part is to tie together the CPU with the DAC, to provide selection from multiple clock sources, and to generate the s/pdif output signal. In Transporter it additionally routes the audio signals coming in from the s/pdif receiver and provides the special functions such as word clock I/O and effects loop. This chip contains flash memory which is factory programmed, but also can be reprogrammed in the field. Changing the programming of this part is the modern equivalent of physically rewiring a bunch of 74xxx logic chips. Prior to TP FW40 we have never revised the logic programming, so this is the first time we are having to reprogram it in the field. Clearly, something is wrong with the automated reprogramming of this part which is supposed to take place at power-on, starting with FW40. Why it would sometimes work when pressing '1' but not automatically I don't yet know, but some including myself and the QA team here have not had to force it. I will look into it. I'll enter a bug for this one but please keep an eye out for anything else. -- seanadams seanadams's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42960 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I haven't tested the SBR analogue out, but I expect it doesn't have that problem since it doesn't have a display. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Help with choosing Transporter v/s USB DAC
There are several advantages. 1) re: jitter it's best to have the data transmitted asynchronously, stored in memory, and then clocked out to a local DAC with a local oscillator. That minimizes jitter at the DAC in the simplest and best way possible. A USB implementation may or may not be able to achieve equivalent performance, but it cannot be better. 2) SB and TP can connect easily to internet radio and music streaming services (such as slacker, which is great) with or without a server present on the network. 3) multiple devices in different rooms can be easily synched to play in unison. 4) the server can be in a closet, or the basement, or wherever. 5) SB and TP can connect to more than one server if there are several on the same network. That even works over the internet, although you may have to use lossy compression if the connection isn't fast enough. -- opaqueice opaqueice's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4234 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43129 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] New transporter firmware (v.40) in nightlies
Eric, as you can see above, I also had problems and went back to Slimserver and an earlier firmware. However after reading this thread http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42970 about problems similar to yours I tried again, first updating firmware, the rewriting Xilink and the resetting factory settings, and now FW40 works for me as well. So last night I enjoyed listening to 88.2 recordings from Linn. Great work, Sean, but perhaps something in FW40 is wrong as to "finishing up" the installation proces? Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] What a difference a DAC makes...
If you can, try removing the DEQ from your system. I did use a DEQ for a while as my old lounge benefitted from the room correction. However, in my new room, it caused more problems than it solved. So it's clearly room dependant regarding benefits, but be aware that it's certainly NOT non intrusive. -- Mr_Sukebe SB+, Bel Canto Evo2i, Impulse Ta'us, Coherent system cables, Stillpoints Mr_Sukebe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10609 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43046 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Anyone identify this cable?
It's speaker cable and it belonged to a friend who sadly died and his wife is asking me to dispose of everything for her. I reckon it's probably about 5 years old as I can remeber him getting it when he bought new speakers and I know he didn't make it up himself - possible that the dealer made it up to a custom length? It's terminated with zplugs and certainly looks like Nordost but I'm a bit wary of listing it on ebay and saying it's Nordost if it's not. I also don't want to just toss it out if it's worth a bit. Anyone know what rev 1 blue heaven was like as I was wondering if it might be that. -- killie99 Primare D30.2 CD player, MF 24/96 DAC, MF A1000 Amp, Impulse H2 speakers oh, and an SB3 killie99's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8337 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43116 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
