[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SqueezeCenter-7.0.1-17957

2008-03-22 Thread cheetah

I have installed the trunk build of SC7. The version is
SqueezeCenter-7.0.1-17957.exe.

However, there is no prompt to upgrade to the FW40 for tranporter.
Checking the Firmwire folder in SC7 folder, the firmwire for
transporter is still only 36.

Can anyone advise how to upgrade to FW40? Thanks

In fact there are 65536 discrete steps, because real-world waveforms
are not perfectly symmetrical. However, in real-world recordings,
generally the bottom few bits are filled with noise.

v40 has been "pulled" from recent releases. I believe it's still
distributed, but transporter.version is set to only use up to v36.

If v40 is distributed with your build you can enable it by changing
transporter.version:

# Transporter firmware
#
# fromto
# from1..from2 to

1..36 40

# future versions may be downgraded to this one
* 40

Thanks a bunch for all of your answers. I realize I got the whole think
backwards, or at least very wrong. I'll have a good look at your
answers now.

Yes Teus you are correct. If I can't get 44.1/24 as a download from
Linn, I use Audacity to downsample whatever is available.

This is odd. I've installed 7.0.1 but my Transporter has stayed at
firmware 36, even despite attempts to update manually (using brightness
button).

I have been using v40 since it was first released, also for the digital
loop capability (which I presume is what you mean by "foldback").

It has always worked fine for me - no stability problems at all.

There is an issue that the volume control doesn't work properly -
there's a bug raised for that.

One final point - you'll need to re-flash the xilink in order to go back
to r36 or earlier. (see the wiki for how to do this)

Josh, you might consider adding 176.4KHz also. Reference Recordings
will soon be offering files at that sample rate. Currently they send
the files as WAVs on a DVD-R disc, but they plan to offer FLAC
downloads in the future:

Thank you for your excellent work on the FLAC format, BTW.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Help in understanding the loudness issue.

2008-03-22 Thread Rodney_Gold

Compression when recording is not always a bad thing , if one has
massive peaks and doesnt compress the music somewhat, everything else
but the peaks will be way too soft.
Digital clipping is another story , its very nasty sounding as the
waveform is just "sheared" off , I would rather have compression than
digital clipping anyday.
These days , music to be played on boomboxes and radio is heavily
compressed so the normal level is "loud" , the louder the music on
radio , the more attention it gets. Boomboxes have limitations on
amplification etc , so if normal levels would be soft, users would
whack the volume up and the peaks would be heavily distorted and most
likely blow drivers.
