Hi, I think the 1050 is hard to beat for that money. Your room should not be too small, as the speakers do some serious bottom end if you compare it with your Diamonds. The MS is a bit lighter on the lower end (no surprise with one woofer only) and a bit brighter. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Controller
I just got mine yesterday and although I had handled one at CES and expected it to be good for my use, I'm floored with how great it actually is. Further proof that Sean, Dean, and the rest of the company "get it". Lots of revolutionary technology that will keep the big boys playing catch up. Couldn't be happier with it. I had been holding out for the Controller to be available separately, but gave up and agreed to split up a Duet last week with another forum member (mere hours before it was available standalone :-) ). As cool as you expect it to be based on specs and screen shots; it sells itself on first use. I'm taking mine to a buddy's house tomorrow morning (I turned him onto Slim Devices a couple of years ago) and expect him to place his order by lunch. I agree it would be a nice upgrade to get with the Transporter as something of a price break over purchasing separately. -- twylie Thecus N5200 -> transporter -> Krell KRC2 -> 4 x nuforce 8b -> Von Schweikert VR-4 Gen III Thecus N5200 -> SB3 -> Monarchy DIP -> Monarchy Super DIP -> Monarchy 18b -> AES 845 monos -> Sonus Faber Concertos / Audio Physic Sparks twylie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=956 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47713 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] M-audio Audiophile 2496 sound card problem
Alls well that ends well. After some further PCI card juggling I finally got the 2496 to work. In case it is any use to anyone else, the trick was to reboot at least once after every change. I used Device Manager to "uninstall" all the PCI cards one at a time. Reboot. Reboot again. Go onto next card and repeat process. Once all the cards were out, shut down and add the 2496 back in first. Reboot. Check it is working. Shut down. Put back next card. Reboot. Check 2496 is working. Repeat with each card. In the end I worked out that it always seemed to stop working when I put in my USB 2.0 add-in card. So I left that card out. It is now sharing IRQ 18 with my PCI modem, but it does not seem to mind that. I now have no spare USB ports, but I have a hub if an extra one is needed. That will teach me to put in a sound card on the 13th! Ripped my first LP to WAV files using Spin-it-again this evening. Converted the files to FLAC using MediaMonkey. Edited the Tags using Tag-and-Rename. Excluding the recording time it took 40 minutes to process. I am sure I can get that down to around 20 with practice. The input levels seemed a bit low (max about 75%), but the end result FLAC files sound tremendous. I have a good system, it can reproduce small scale music events with very realistic sound. It can make nice sounding symphonic music, but it never makes me think that I'm sitting in the Kennedy Center listening to Richardo Muti. Probably because I know that the orchestra will not fit in my listening room. Would have liked to have been there for that. Actually the very best connection for audio IMHO is high compression mechanical only. The only problem is that the connection degrades a little more every day as far as audio is concerned because of the materials involved in high-end audio (namely copper and silver). Just cant squeeze out all the air or get all the metal to blend no matter how much pressure is used (within reason and without destroying the spade). So in the end, bi-metal corrosion and oxidation start taking their toll on the connection audio wise. The best compromise has been to finish the high compression mechanical connection by soldering it with high-grade silver solder. And when it comes to soldering, Metcal is my preferred tool of choice. But in the end isnt all about compromise. We are compromising the fact that we dont have time to go see a live performance. We then try to recreate a three dimensional living event with a compromised copy of the event played on equipment that can never recreate the live event. Not as bad a starting place with a studio recording, but still trying to recreate the impossible. So for me the idea is to get as close as I can with the money I am willing to throw at it with an end result of a sound that is very real and pleasing to me (and still have money left over for 6 symphony and 2 popular concerts a month). -- iPhone iPhone Last.FM http://www.lastfm.com/user/mePhone Media Room: Transporter, Vandersteen Quatro Signature, Ayre MX-R Mono Blocks, VTL TL-6.5 Signature Pre-Amp, VCC-5 Reference Center Channel, four VSM-1 Signatures, Runco 710, RAM Oppo DV970HD, VeraStarr 6.4SE Living Room: SqueezeBox Duet, Vandersteen Model 3A Signature, Two 2Wq subs, VCC-2, Two VSM-1, ADCOM GTP-870HD, Cinepro 3K6SE III Gold Bedroom: Squeezebox 3, Thiel 2.3, NAD C370 iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47613 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Simpler (less demanding) EQ than Inguz?
I've never installed the Inguz plugin, so can't comment on how lightweight it is, but from the web page it would appear to be what you require, with the ADDED option of room correction. In other words, if you don't want room correction, it still seems to offer a nice, 2, 3, 5 or 9 band equalizer. I would imagine that any plugin that tries to accomplish this will have a similar processing load on the server, and I suspect that the load is quite considerable given the calculations that have to be done. But like I said, I haven't installed this plugin, so am only guessing. Others with more experience of the plugin could advise better. Ah right, I was struggling to find a way to adjust levels in the 2496 when it locked up the first time. You are right, the levels did seem a little low and there didn't seem to be any way to adjust them. I would need to use the output from the hi-cap then. Ordinary DIN->Phono i/o cables wouldn't work, so I would need a modified 4 pin "Snaic" cable with the main outputs terminated in a pair of phonos rather than another DIN. If you can't get the 2496 working (and if it isn't because the card itself is faulty), then it's a driver incompatibility issue. In that case, my gut feeling would be that buying another M-Audio product might end you up in the same boat. (It's surely a possibility that all the Delta drivers could share some common core code). So I'd be looking at a different brand. By the way, I have nothing against M-Audio: I use a 2496 myself (driven from a Linn LP12/Ittok/Karma/Naim 42.5, as it happens), and it has never given me any trouble. As for the issue about having the analogue circuitry in an external box, consider this: 1. Noise interference simply isn't a problem with modern PCI bus cards. I strongly suspect the reason for some of these devices having external boxes is more to do with the convenience factor when switching connections around. 2. The cost of the external case is probably greater than the components inside it.
