Hopefully those cosmetic items do not account for a big chunk of the
difference in pricing. My expectation is that the main point of the
Transporter is to improve on the sound of the SB3, and the difference
in cost should be attributed to sound quality.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3 -> Transporter Minireview

2008-06-18 Thread StigErik

I have two SB3 and one TP... I use a SB3 for my main stereo setup in my
music room, because I have a very nice DAC and currently very few
hi-rez files. The few I have, I can play on the computer instead.

For the secondary stereo in the living room I use the TP. Why? The
answer is simple - why use a SB3 with an external DAC, when the TP's
DAC (in my ears) is better than any DAC in its price range!

I would love the idea of a Transporter without knobs and display as
well. I always use the remote, and a Controller is arriving soon.

I had a similar problem a while back going from 7.0.1 to 7.2. A full
reset (hold Add while connecting power) fixed it, a Xilinx reset (which
I tried first) did not. Don't know what the underlying issue was.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3 -> Transporter Minireview

2008-06-18 Thread mswlogo

Guys you don't read very well. I said I never expected TP to sound
better as a digital transport. It was worth a check though !! I doubt a
SB+ sounds any different on digital outputs as well on a good
dejittering DAC.

But it does have more capabilities that are worth it to me. Mainly
88.2/96K.

And if my library only has 5% 24/96 it's worth it to me. As I also said
I think we will see more 24/96 as physical media phases out.

I see more people spend boatloads of $$$ on snake oil products. At
least I get something for it.

I love the Vu meters. I love the 19" width. I love being able to
shuffle cables around the back without the SB3 dancing around and
falling off the shelf. I love the ability to now buy 24/96 music and be
able to hear it.

I just bought a new sofa that was more expensive than I could get at
some discount furniture store. It's not any more comfortable and has no
more seating capacity. But it looks really really nice. Was I wrong to
buy the sofa that appealed to me more?

I have to agree with what MC said. The main differences in an SB3 and
TP (aside from the front panel controls, knob, meters, case) on the
digital output side is a better power supply, better processor, and the
fact that the TP can handle 88.2 and 96 KHz formats (since this post is
not about using the Slim DACs).

If one has a very nice DAC, has no need to play 88.2 or 96 recording,
then I really think an SB3/Duet is all one needs. In less of course it
is beneath one to have audio equipment that is not 19 inches wide! ;) A
Bel Canto DAC 3 and SB3 fit nicely together on a 19-inch shelf and
sounds good on the analog side also.

So if the speakers one uses have their own DAC, why buy a TP unless one
has a huge amount of 88.2 or 96 KHz files? Of course this is assuming
the Audiophile inside oneself will allow the SB3/Duet even though it’s
not rack mountable. :}

It's probably not surprising that there was little (indeed no)
discernable difference. In principle, if a DAC is doing its job
properly then it should be pretty well immune to jitter, and since
they're the same bits, there's no scope for improvement.

Since you have a £5k Meridian device that's receiving your digital
data, I'd be very surprised if it didn't deal with jitter very well
indeed. In fact, I'd be rather worried about it if there were a big
improvement moving to the TP!

I also thought that the Transporter was an excellent digital transport,
and was disappointed that a 'digital only' version didn't exist.

I found it to be better than the unmodified SB3 as a digital transport
but it is too long ago to say how it compares against my modified SB3.
I wasn't too impressed with the analogue output of the Transporter.

For me, the real strength of the Transporter is its power supply
sections, the other features not being so important.

We should also remember the at-tunes SB+ as an excellent alternative to
both the SB3 and Transporter!

Contemplating the purchase of a Mac Mini for use with my SB3. I went
away from Mac when I bought the SB3 3 years ago because of the weak

compatible( I've read Parallels has problems with peripherals) Oh, and
does the C2Duo have enough horsepower to use the Inguz plugin for said

I gather from your review that you were uisng the TP and SB3 only as
digital transports - digital output from either and not analog? This

The R&D on the analog was probably pretty significant. The added cost

Well it's the exact same screen on SB3 and Transporter, you just have
two of them. I can perfectly see folks not justifying it if only using
SPDIF. To me it's worth it for the price I got it. I want 88.2 and
96Khz capability. I think you may have just had some bad luck because I
have not seen many reports of failures on SB or TP.

I'll have to play with shutting off displays and see how it sounds.
I've heard of that issue before but not specific to Meridian or Slim
Devices.

after the top 1/2 of the right hand screen went , then I got a new one
out the box and the top 1/2 of the left hand screen hs failed 4 days

At any rate - I bought the TP for its dac and the balanced outputs to

I might not even open the new TP but just flog it and get myself

In terms of my Digital output , changing the way files are decoded and

I should have mentioned that I had always hoped Slim Devices would have
released a Tranport only (no DAC) Transporter which was another reason

Probably 1/3 the cost of the transporter is it's analog/DAC section
which is a shame it's wasted.

I should also mention that the Meridian has a 3 Stage FIFO so the
jitter difference between decent digital sources (e.g. SB and TP) tends
to make them all equal sounding. I was thinking of comparing them with
the FIFO's turned off. But there are FIFO's in the speakers too that
can't be defeated.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Behringer DEQ2496 in Transporter digital loop for room correction?

2008-06-18 Thread cliveb

A quick question. When using the effects loop, I presume that the TP's
digital inputs can't be used for a different source?

For example, consider this setup:
DVD player -> TP Toslink input
plus:
TP AES/EBU output -> DEQ2496 -> TP AES/EBU input

I presume you can't play from the DVD player into the TP, then out via
the Behringer and back into the TP DAC?

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SB3 -> Transporter Minireview

2008-06-18 Thread Rodney_Gold

His speakers take a Digital Signal , have inbuilt DACS so analog output
is not really an option unless to a headphone amp or something else
that requires an analog signal.
