Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] power supply upgrade for duet receiver
I found a difference in sonics when I changed the place the flac gets decoded from my TP/SB to the puter? Its a cheap tweak for sure - it's free Quoted from the thread You can try disabling the native FLAC streaming and let the server decode the file and stream WAV. If this changes things you'll fall into the "I hear a difference where one shouldn't exist" camp. There are a bunch of folks that belong to this :). 1. SqueezeCenter Settings -> Advanced -> File Types -> FLAC/FLAC = disabled, FLAC/WAV = flac 2. Flip to another song and start playing. If you're using Windows, you should see a process labeled flac.exe in the Task Manager indicating the server decode is operating. - Ken (hearing differences where they shouldn't exist) -- Rodney_Gold Sb3/Z-sys RDP1/meridian DSP5500's TP/X-cans v3/Senns 650's TP/TACT 2.0/SCM 50a's TP/Meridian DSP5000's "The nicest thing about smacking your head against the wall is...the feeling you get when you stop" Rodney_Gold's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14618 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49041 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Setting Transporter to Slave for World Clock Input
It's been one of the things that has really impressed me about the SB3 is how well the wireless has worked and sounded. Granted it's only about 25 feet away from my access point but it has been fantastic. I run both Flac and Lame mp3 220 vbr and never have dropouts or any loss of quality. Yes I don't have the 20k system that would maybe show me the errors of my way but I do have a decent system for the average guy. So in the right conditions, wireless can handle about anything but the possibility exists and why do it if you invest a ton in your equipment. That about right? I guess I do have one Audiophile characteristic in that not keeping things neat is no problem here. :] Thanks for the info my friend. -- Nonreality -IF THE RULE YOU FOLLOWED BROUGHT YOU TO THIS, OF WHAT USE IS THE RULE.- HTTP://www.last.fm/user/nonreality Nonreality's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15723 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39770 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] power supply upgrade for duet receiver
iPhone, Thanks for the detailed response. Where did you find the current spec for the Creation Audio supply? I couldn't find that anywhere online. I am aware that the SBR expects a minimum supply rating of 550 mA. As to my interest in upgrading the power supply: Just got the Duet about a week ago. I have added it to my main rig, and while I love the convenience of the system, the sound leaves something to be desired. The main rig is: Music Reference RM5 Mk III tube preamp -> McCormack DNA-1 Rev A power amp -> B&W Nautilus 805 speakers. Cabling is Cardas and Synergistic Research. AC Power is via a dedicated line, distributed through a Furutech eTP-80 (except the power amp plugs straight into the dedicated AC line). My digital source has been a Marantz DV-8400 Universal Disc player. Power to that is through a JPS Digital Power Cable. The Marantz sits on Aurios bearings. My discs have all been ripped with dbpoweramp CD ripper to FLAC. Played back via the SBR through the main rig, compared with the same discs through the Marantz, the sound is thinner harmonically, and the imaging is less distinct. It is NOT bad, just not as good as what I'm used to. Which leads me back to the notion of upgrading the power supply. I would expect that putting a nice DAC in the chain would be much more effective, but I don't have the funds for that at present. I have gotten lots of mileage from various cheap tweaks in the past, and am just looking for one more! A regulated supply is always a nice bonus. The link you published should NOT be used with an SBR. That $10 PS is totally inadequate. Its maximum available output current is 250mA, which is well less then half of the required minimum! Not putting to fine a point on it, if one doesn’t know the minimum power supply requirements before attempting to replace/upgrade the OEM PS the previous post advice about quitting while one is ahead is excellent advice. IE, you are better off with the proper OEM Power Supply. Besides before spending money to upgrade the OEM supply, does your system not need upgraded first to take advantage of bothering to try to improve the output of the Duet with a PS upgrade? Not knowing your equipment, how about a DAC, new speakers, better pre-amp, amplifier with more current? Unless all of this is already top shelf, not much need or use in a PS upgrade for the SBR. -- iPhone *iPhone* 'Last.FM' (http://www.last.fm/user/mephone) Media Room: Transporter, VTL TL-6.5 Signature Pre-Amp, Ayre MX-R Mono Blocks, Vandersteen Quatro, VeraStarr 6.4SE 6-channel Amp, VCC-5 Reference Center, four VSM-1 Signatures, Runco RS 900 CineWide AutoScope 2.35:1 Living Room: Duet, ADCOM GTP-870HD, Cinepro 3K6SE III Gold, Vandersteen Model 3A Signature, Two 2Wq subs, VCC-2, Two VSM-1 Bedroom: SB3, NAD C370, Thiel 2.3 Home Office: SB3, Parasound Vamp v.3, VSM-1 Sigs Mobile: SB3, Audioengine A5 iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49041 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I think it was more carefully that WiFi may have problems. RedBook audio is 172 Kbytes/second. Flac is about half that. http://www.pfarrell.com/prc/bits.html 172 Kbytes/second is over 1.3 megabit/second. So Flac really needs 700k bits/second. This is a significant portion of 11b networking, which is all that a SB1 could do. So with an ancient SB1, its marginal. With any more recent stuff, SB2, SB3, SB Classic, Duet, you can run 11g. It claims to be five times faster than 11b. This provides a fair amount of headroom. But WiFi is a shared media, it is shared with bluetooth, Zigbee, microwaves, some wireless phones, and your neighbor's WiFi. So the fewer WiFi hops the signal has to make, the better. Most folks run their SqueezeCenter hard wired with Ethernet to the Wireless router/access point. I ran CAT5 cable to my Transporter. But I ran over 1500 feet of CAT5 in my house, so it was no big deal. My serious stereo is in my living room, far away from the air conditioner, and far away from the server with SqueezeCenter. The room (and speaker placement in the room) can easily be the most important thing for sound quality, once you get above a minimum level. Rectangular rooms are death. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Setting Transporter to Slave for World Clock Input
With the experts gathered here I'm hoping to get a couple of answers that have me a bit perplexed. Earlier on this thread it was implied that the bandwidth of a wireless router was not enough for high quality sound. What rates are the real high quality music? I've checked my SB3's wireless test and it runs 100% up to 4-5000kbps. I know a regular wave file is in the 1400 range and works perfect, why isn't this enough for almost any file type? There must be something I'm not taking into account. The second question is that a lot of the gains that you are getting takes place in the quiet ranges of the music and in the difference of the low and high. What kind of rooms do you have to enable you to hear this well enough to make use of the gains? Mine is only reasonably quiet when I'm the only one here but still there is air movement, heating AC etc, other electronic noises that make the nuances hard in some cases but at the levels you are talking must be very hard. Do you have rooms that are isolated from all that? This is interesting stuff for me. Not all of the audiophile stuff is as it seems sometimes to be a pissing match over who can out knowledge the other. This thread has been interesting more on the scientific side. Anyway no hurry on the answers, they just have been bugging me. I'd definitely recommend having a CD player on hand for the times when your SqueezeCenter server, or your network isn't available for whatever reason. Or even just for when someone comes by with a CD that you want to play on your stereo without having to rip it first. If you're going to be playing through an outboard DAC, and if it's only occasionally used, then I wouldn't worry too much about the merits of the CDP as a transport. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49169 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

The more recent transports from dCS upsample red book to DSD, so the Purcell is unnecessary unless you want a choice of upsampling modes. I see from 'this thread' (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39770) (to which I've just contributed) that seanadams (Founder, Slim Devices) strongly disapproves of the use of an external word clock in this situation (and gives cogent reasons for doing so!), but what can I say? Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Setting Transporter to Slave for World Clock Input
A related issue arose in a thread I started here yesterday. I did a Google search on "External Word Clock" and, lo and behold! found myself back at this forum on this thread. I have dCS Elgar Plus DAC, Verdi la Scala Transport and Verona Word Clock. I am interested in downloading high resolution audio files and playing them through the Elgar. The Transporter seems to be about the only device capable of doing this over a wireless network (which would be convenient), and it is an attraction for me that it has an external clock connection, so I could use the Verona as master clock for both (even if Sean thinks this is perverse and wrong!!). John Atkinson 'reviewed the Verona' (http://www.stereophile.com/digitalprocessors/305dcs/) very positively in -Stereophile- in 2005 (you may think -Stereophile- reviews are rubbish, but they were very positive about the Squeezebox and the Transporter, and brought them to my attention and that of many other audiophiles (and John Atkinson is a lot more level-headed than Michael Fremer, though I do blame him for persuading me to buy a Benchmark DAC-1)). Now the Verona only outputs 44.1kHz and 48kHz (other dCS devices can multiply these up as required (probably adding to the wrongheadedness of the external master clock from Sean's point of view)): but what will the Transporter do with, say, a 96kHz file when it's being fed a 48kHz word clock signal? To get to the point: if I buy a transporter, will I be able to use it to feed 88.2/24 and 96/24 digital signals to my Elgar while clocking it at 44.1 or 48 with my Verona? -- Ciaran Ciaran's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18300 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39770 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Does using the Verona as master clock really make sense? I would have thought that you would want the master clock in the DAC for best jitter elimination, in which case the Verona would be redundant in a 'direct' system. It makes sense to me if you are syncing many digital processors (and potentially DACs) in some professional environment, maybe, where you need a lot of synchronicity, as it were. Interesting. Probably there's nothing wrong with your power, but the software failing to read the ADC properly, which measures the voltage at the transformer's secondary. If there's an error, or the system thinks it has detected an over-voltage, it goes into a failsafe mode where it immediately configures the primary winding for 220V, and then halts. It might be a good idea to go into the firmware setup menu -> current settings -> AC line voltage and confirm that it has a sane reading. It should be +/- 20% of what you'd get with an voltmeter. I dont know what the TP expects on the world clock input for the higher resolutions and in fairness I only tested this mode with 44/16 source material. -- anselld anselld's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11703 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49133 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

They're just hangin' for when they need to be used. Of course TP > max resolution is 96/24 max as far as I know. Thanks for the info, anselld! I'd been wondering about the clocking: the Verona outputs 44.1kHz and 48kHz only: all the high resolution audio files use a multiple of one or other of these (the most extreme being DSD with 64 × 44.1kHz = 2.8224MHz) and the Elgar Plus is happy with that. I wonder can the TP cope or does it need the exact sampling rate? To input 192/24 to the Elgar you need to use a dual AES/EBU connection: as the TP only has one of these, no amount of firmware upgrades will make this possible. But it's a bit theoretical anyway: files of higher resolution than 96/24 seem to be pretty rare! -- Ciaran Ciaran's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18300 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49133 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
