I think the basic test has to be to simply disconnect the offending computer from the router and if that does not cure it, then it is clearly interference through the mains loop, despite the consumer unit being in there. I will try this tomorrow. However, I've had this computer quite a long time now, and haven't really noticed it affecting the system when playing vinyl or the CD player that is now languishing in a cupboard. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Receiver with 96kHz output
Does anyone know if Logitech will be releasing a receiver with up to 96khz on the digital output. I have some Linn files that are 24/96 and the SB3 is downsampling them to 24/48 which going through the dCS Purcell (upsampling to 192) and Delius sound extreamly good. Very detailed, warm and very listenable. I would, however, eventually like to play the files without downsampling. I know the transporter outputs at 96 but it would be a waste of money when I have the dCS kit any I haven't got any where near that kind of money. -- tobyjug tobyjug's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=201 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49210 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

David - going with your flow for a moment...all ring mains are connected eventually at the main junction box in your house (UK wiring). So an emitter of crap onto the mains WILL be able to interfere with other equipment. PC's use heavy duty switching supplies that are NOT designed for audio niceness. They are designed to be cheap and powerful. It is possible that your mains filtering is having trouble dealing with this (or it could be airborne EMI that your filters wont touch anyway). Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Sometimes I really don't get it!
If I were writing the above in a magazine, then I would have done extensive repeatability tests, but in this forum I think it is useful to post first impressions and see if there is other similar experience out there, and possibly (perhaps more importantly) someone who might be able to suggest why this might occur. So if I can ask you to take a huge leap of faith, and assume for the moment that I am neither deaf nor stupid. What about those people who find the TP generally dull and lifeless, or those that find its performance varies greatly? Just suppose for a moment that it is possible for a computer wired into the network to affect the performance of the TP - to make it a bit dull and lifeless. What if that computer is your main server? Then you will think the TP is dull and lifeless. Or in my case, if the server does not affect the TP but an ancilliary computer does, then you will perceive the performance of the TP changing from day to day. My experience is that the TP is 95% of the time an amazing performer, doubly so given the price. As I rarely leave my computer on when I sit down for a serious listening session, then that would add up. Again, this is first impressions, out there for debate. I will try it again, and in a more controlled way. I'll also try simply pulling the patch cable out. However, if I'm right, then I would repeat my question. The point is : now that you have ripped all your Cd's and gone the SB/TP route are you actually going to load one up and "spin" it. If bigfool says it sounds better, even if it is some psychological trick you think he's playing on himself , why should he semi blind test it? It's not like he's spending any money on this tweak and if he thinks it sounds better , it is a truism for him. Much like I think decoding flac on my server sounds better than decoding it at my transporter. I promise you that if you have a preconcieved notion that there are no differences , even if there are , you probably wont hear them too. I say good luck to him , if he has achieved a better sound , whichever way it may be , he reaps the rewards , why rain on his parade? Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] About to sell my CD player--will SB3 be enough??
The idea of browsing my CD shelves is exactly why I don't want to give up a CD player altogether! I love doing that. I still miss the old-time record store where you could go in and flip through LPs in various genres for hours on end, sneezing from the dust. Later I browsed for CDs in the same manner in record stores. It's getting harder and harder to find places to do this anymore, I order most of my CDs from Amazon and vinyl from Music Direct or Acoustic Sounds and the only browsing I do is online. Not the same. Like some of you, if my network goes down I have my 2000 LPs to listen to on my Linn LP12, and I still have FM tuners as well--plus my trusty old Nakamichi CR-7A tape deck and all those mix tapes I made in the 70s and 80s! I guess I just like to have a lot of options, but I don't want to see a $3000 CD player not getting that much use so I thought I'd downgrade and save some $$$. Still it'll be very hard to part with the Ayre, it is a wonderful player even at twice the price. -- sc53 sc53's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8690 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49169 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Acknowledging one small disadvantage in running a Squeezebox based system doesn't mean I don't appreciate the multitude of advantages it brings. As it happens, I sold my (very expensive) CD player back in 2005 after embracing the Slim Devices approach. Over the intervening years I've learned to live without being able to browse my music that way. A power supply with too high a voltage will likely damage the device being powered, whereas a power supply with too low a current rating will simply mean that the device will not function with that PSU. At worst, the PSU may be damaged, but the powered device will be not be harmed. Having a wall full of CD spines allows for a browsing mode that simply isn't available via the SB remote, Controller or web interface. It happens when you feel like listening to some music, but haven't a clue what. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Sometimes I really don't get it!
Whoopee, back in the UK for a whole week, that means real hifi, vinyl, transporter instead of duet, and whopping great speakers instead of headphones. I use a QNAP for a server, and I'm wired to and from the router (don't really want a wifi transceiver hovering above my pre-amp). The QNAP is in another room, with a large Dell desktop, which is also wired to the router. This room is on a different ring main to the hifi. So I'm sat listening to my TP wondering why sometimes it sounds good, but uninvolving, and at other times it sounds simply great. My mind is wandering because exactly then was one of the uninvolving times. Anyway I wander into the study to see how my spyware scan is doing, nothing found, and so the desktop is not required. I switch it off and go back to listening. Thing is, when I walk back into the room I'm staggered by the change in sound. Now the TP sounds great again. Clearly switching on and off the desktop affects the sound, and it's not subtle. Why on earth? I mean CAT5 is decoupled AFAIK. It's a different ring main, different room. BTW, I wasn't even looking for a change, or experimenting, I simply turned off the computer because I didn't need it running. I have no sensible explanation. For me, storage and browsing is the main problem with CDs, they take up wall space that we don't have and wouldn't want to cover in CDs anyway. Personally, I find them a pain to browse through - squinting at the tiny writing on the spine. Getting them in and out of the case is a fiddle and getting the booklet in and out threatens to destroy the booklet and/or case which would eventually disintegrate of its own accord anyway. I am still in the process of ripping my CD collection (only 50 to go...) and so am constantly reminded how much I -hate- CDs! The CD was such a backward step from vinyl LPs which are a joy to handle by comparison and actually take up less wall space than CDs if you have a large collection. I find it *much* easier than either CDs or LPs to browse through my server based music collection using the Duet controller. And we can save the wall space for art, photographs or books. I always browse using the "music folder" option and am very careful to save my CDs as \genre\band(or composer)\album\track.flac. That makes it a doddle to find whatever I want. If I want to randomly browse I just do that using the "albums" option on the controller which obviously mixes up classical, jazz, rock and pop in alphabetical order by album name - which is totally random! -- TheLastMan Matt SB Duet, Synology Diskstation 107+ with FW 2.0-0600 SqueezeCenter 7.0.1 and SSODS 3 beta 13.
